Janice Price Hughes
AURORA, Colo. – Janice Price Hughes, 74, of Aurora, died June 21, 2000, of cancer. Janice was born Nov. 12, 1925, to George and Mary Price in Bridger, Mont. She graduated from Bridger High School and worked for Western Union in Reno, Nev., Continental Airlines in Denver and retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Denver in 1996.
She is survived by her children, Bradley Hughes of Casper, Wyo., Russell Hughes of Aurora, Karen Downing of Fort Collins, Vivian Horton of Alabama, and Ardis Hughes of Denver; her sisters, Judy Steffan and Donna Redman of Bridger, Joan Wogoman of Cody, Wyo., and Virginia Groves of Spokane, Wash.; six grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Mary Ann Weisgerber and George Winston Price.
Graveside services will be held Monday, June 26, at the Bridger cemetery.

Peter Vetch
MILES CITY – Peter Vetch, 88, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, in the Friendship Care Center.
Rite of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Sacred Heart Catholic Parish. Rite of Committal will follow in the Calvary cemetery. Bullis-Graves Memorial Chapel of Miles Cite is in charge.

Nyla Jean Grele
CULBERTSON – Nyla Jean Grele died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at the Roosevelt Memorial Nursing Home after a six-year battle with cancer.
Visitations will be held at the Everson-Clayton Memorial Chapel from 2-8 p.m. on Friday, May 19. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Dane Valley. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Bertha L. Heron
LOVELL, Wyo. – Bertha Louise Heron, 80, died Saturday, May 13, 2000, at New Horizons Care Center.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at Haskell Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 19, in the Lovell LDS Stake Center. Interment will be in the Lovell cemetery.

Eugene W. ‘Pete’ Baker
MELROSE, Minn. – Eugene W. "Pete" Baker, 88, of Melrose, died on Monday, May 15, 2000, at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 3rd at Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose, with Reverend Reed Stockman officiating.
Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church.
Pete Baker was born in Tenstrike, Minn. to Eugene and Etta (Eddy) Baker. He married Lucille Streeter on March 31, 1934. He ranched cattle in Montana until his retirement in 1965. He spent his retirement between Montana and Arizona until February, when he moved into the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose. He was involved with the Yellowstone Boys Ranch, and was a past member of the Masons and Elks.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Streeter of Apache Junction, Ariz.; sons and daughter, Eddy Baker and his wife, Clara, of Billings, Wilbur "Bud" Baker of Fairview, Mont., Richard Baker and his friend, Pauline, of Bismarck, N.D., Maxine Manthei and her husband, Don, of Melrose; Ben Baker, DVM, of Lexington, Ky. and Jerry Baker of Lafayette, La., sister Nora Baker-Walker of Mesa, Ariz.; 17 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Chester and Winston Baker, Evelyn Gile, and Ruth Tinker; special friend, Luella Wold.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Saint Michael’s Hospice, in Sauk Centre, Minn.

Yvonne Byrne
LAUREL – Yvonne Byrne, 65, of Laurel, passed away June 28, 2000, at her home.
Yvonne was born at Denver, on Nov. 5, 1934, to Clarence and Helen Blackwelder. When Yvonne was five years old her family moved to a farm at Winifred, Mont. Yvonne spent her summers on the farm and the school year at the family home in Lewistown, where she graduated with the Fergus High School, class of 1950.
After high school, Yvonne attended Cotty College in Nevada, Mo., for a year and transferred to the University of Montana. It was there that she met her husband, Robert (Lefty) Byrne. Soon after college, Yvonne and Lefty moved to Laurel raising four children on their ranch south of town.
In August of 1979, her husband, Lefty, sustained a severe head injury, leaving him physically disabled. The following nineteen years Yvonne faithfully attended her husband’s every need as nurse, wife and saint. Lefty preceded her in death on Oct. 28, 1998. Yvonne gave her life to her children and grandchildren traveling around the state attending their numerous school and church related activities. Yvonne’s life was a brilliant testimony of God’s love, grace and faithfulness. All those who knew her, loved her, and to us she will always be considered a saint.
Yvonne is survived by one son, Tim Byrne and his wife, Marcy and children: Aubrey and Erica of Laurel; three daughters, Apryl Anderson and husband, Tom and children: Nycole, Natalie and Bobby of Laurel, Christyl Healy and husband, Mike and children: Shawn Healy and Adam Healy of Laurel, Robyn Ruff and husband, Todd of Sheridan, Wyo., special children: Bernie Bray and his wife, Marcia and Ronnie Bray and his wife, Jackie both of Laurel.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 1, at The Laurel Baptist Church, located at the East Laurel exit adjacent to Seitz Ronan Rd.
The family suggests memorials be sent to: Montana P.E.0., c/o Leslie Mathews, P.O. Box 80612, Billings, MT 59108-0612.
Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel was in charge of cremation.

Wilbur ‘Heavy’ Davis
MILES CITY – Wilbur M. “Heavy” Davis, 84, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at the Holy Rosary Health Center.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday in the chapel in Miles City. Prayer services will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 2, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 3, in the chapel of the funeral home. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery.

Beverly A. Dunlap
LOLO – Beverly A. Dunlap, age 53 of Lolo, passed away on Thursday, June 29, 2000, at Missoula Community Medical Center of natural causes. She was born Aug. 30, 1946, in Billings, a daughter of Benjamin and Reona Hartung. She was raised and educated in Billings and for the last 20 years has resided in Lolo.
Bev loved little children and had worked in day care for a number of years. She also enjoyed gambling as a hobby. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Charles Hartung and her husband, Jerry. She is now survived by one son, Scott Dunlap of Lolo, a brother, James Hartung of Richland, Wash., her special friend and companion, Carl Donaldson of Missoula, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, July 3, at 2 p.m. at Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Dan Dixson officiating with a reception following in the funeral home’s community room. Memorials have been suggested to the Shriners Hospital, 911 W. 5th Ave., Spokane, WA 99204. Arrangements and cremation are under the direction and care of Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory.

Irene Holbrook
SIDNEY – Irene Holbrook, 82, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at the Sidney Health Center-Extended Care Facility.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 30, at the Fulkerson Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Crane cemetery.

Betty Kapornyai
MILES CITY – Betty Marie Kapornyai, 83, died in her sleep at the Friendship Villa Nursing Home after a short illness.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, July 3, in the chapel in Miles City. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 5, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery.

Alice McCarty
SCOBEY – Alice McCarty died Wednesday, June 28, at the Daniels Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 3, at the Scobey Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Scobey cemetery. Waller Funeral Home is in charge.

John P. McDonough
MESA, Ariz. – John P. McDonough, 101, of Mesa, passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2000. He was born In Orleans, Neb., Oct. 23, 1895, and moved to Gebo, Mont., when he was six months old. A Montana rancher until he retired, John started coming to the valley area in the 1960s and took up residency in the l970s.
He served in the Army in France during WWI and received the French Legion of Honor Medal in 1999. He also. received the 75 year American Legion Honor Award. He was a Centenarian and an avid card player. He will be remembered by his quick wit and keen sense of humor. He lived a very active and full life, stating, “The Good Lord has been awfully good to me.”
Preceding him in his passing were four wives; his son, Jack McDonough of Conrad, Mont.; daughter, Patricia Eckes of Tucson, and four brothers. He leaves behind his beloved companion, Marie Olson of Mesa; daughters, Betty Clifford of Helena, Mont., Jean Doroshenko of Chandler, Millie Woolley of Big Timber, Mont., Karla Norfleet of Rolling Hills, N.J., Shirley Hyde of Mesa; one son, Joe McDonough of Ridgecrest, Calif.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service and Rosary was held Friday, June 23, at Mesa Heritage Mortuary, 5650 E. Main St., Mesa. In celebration of his life, a Mass was held at All Saints Catholic Church on June 24 at 1534 N. Recker Road in Mesa. Burial immediately followed at Queen of Heaven cemetery.

James K. Parker Jr.
AURORA, Colo. – James K. Parker Jr., 45, formerly of Billings, died on June 21, 2000, at Aurora Medical Center.
He was born in Chicago, on Dec. 23, 1954, the first son and third of six children of James K. and Veronica Parker Sr. Growing up, Jim lived in many states because of his father’s work. He graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1972 and from Rocky Mountain College in 1976 with a B.S. in business administration. A born salesman, Jim had a great sense of humor and was a true and caring friend to all who knew him. He will be missed by all. His giving spirit continues through organ donation.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara and son, Shannon Westerman of Aurora; his mother, Veronica Parker of Billings; two sisters, Christine Carlson of Mesa, Ariz., and Colleen Hunt (Donald) of Littleton; four brothers, Bruce Parker (Lisa) of Bozeman, Mont., Brian Parker (Rosemary) of Orlando, Fla., Major Daniel Parker (Christina), U.S. Army, of Billings and Korea; 19 nieces and nephews, his uncle, aunts, and many cousins. His father, James K. Parker Sr., and a brother, John Parker preceded him in death.
Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on July 1, at St. Pius X Church, 18th Street West and Broadwater. Interment to follow in Calvary cemetery at St. Pius X Church. In lieu of flowers, donations my be given to the Jim Parker Scholarship Fund (for a Billings Senior High School student to attend Rocky Mountain College), c/o Billings Senior High School, 425 Grand Ave., Billings, MT 59101, Attn: Lana Lynch. Masses are appreciated.

Kenneth Irving Shattuck
A long and full life ended early June 28, 2000, when Kenneth I. Shattuck passed away. He was born Jan. 25, 1903, in Aberdeen, S.D., the son of Clifford and Jessie (Briggs) Shattuck.
At an early age, Ken moved with his family to a homestead in southern Saskatchewan. Life on the homestead was not to his liking, so at age 15 he went to work for the Canadian Pacific Railway as a telegrapher. That was to be a job that lasted 50 years without missing a day.
Ken married Audrey Perkins in Moose Jaw, Sask., Dec. 21, 1929. They lived in many different towns in Saskachewan and retired in Victoria, B.C. After Audrey’s death, Ken moved to Billings to be close to family.
A Mason for 73 years, Ken was a member of Vancouver and Quadra Masonic Lodge No. 2 and the Scottish Rite. He was a past president of C.P.R. Pensioners. While in Victoria, Ken and Audrey were members of Gordon Head United Church of Canada.
In addition to his wife Audrey, Ken was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Dr. Clark Shattuck of Minneapolis, and two brothers, Arlington and Allen Shattuck.
He is survived by his daughter, Joy and much appreciated son-in-law, Marlin Waylander of Billings and daughter-in-law, Lois Shattuck of Minneapolis. Ken leaves seven grandchildren, Laurie (Tom) Hornung of Billings, Gary (Connie) Waylander of Birmingham, Ala., Gregg (Gayle) Waylander of Montevideo, Minn., David (Rhonda) Waylander of Livingston, Lynn Shattuck of Sioux Falls, S.D., Kathy (Greg) Brown of Minneapolis, and Mark (Tim) Shattuck of Orting, Wash. He was very proud of his family that also included 21 great-grandchildren.
The last three years at West Park Village were some of Ken’s happiest. His family greatly appreciates the love and caring of the staff and residents. A special friend, Art Eichlin, enlivened many an afternoon as he and Ken discussed railroading, Civil War and politics. The many good friends from Victoria who stayed in touch were also a blessing.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held July 10, at 2 p.m. at McCall Brothers, Funeral Directors, Victoria B.C. A reception will follow at Mc Call’s.
Michelotti, Sawyers and Nordquist had charge of local arrangements.

Ellen C. Shields
Ellen Christine Shields, daughter of John and Josephine Stromberg Shields, was born at Esmond, N.D., on Nov. 23, 1912. She passed away at St. John’s Lutheran Home on June 29, 2000.
Her family moved to Montana in 1916 where they were engaged in farming in the Chateau-Dutton area. In 1947, they moved to the east side of Flathead Lake near Bigfork.
Ellen graduated from the University of Montana with a master’s degree in mathematics and taught at Billings Senior High until her retirement. She loved to travel and was very active in many community organizations. For many years, she delivered meals on wheels to the shut-ins. Her interest in education was evident in the fact that she granted many scholarships to students of the University System.
Ellen is survived by several cousins in Wisconsin, Nevada, Illinois and Sweden.
To honor Ellen’s request, cremation has taken place. Private interment will be held at Conrad Memorial cemetery in Kalispell at a later date.
Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Home in Billings or to the charity of one’s choice.
