Robert ‘Shorty’ Benson
CODY, Wyo. – Robert H. “Shorty” Benson, 86, died Monday, June 5, 2000, at his home.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. at the Cody United Methodist Church on Friday, June 9. Interment of cremains will be at 4:30 p.m. in the Hillside cemetery in Greybull.

Ilean Big Hair
ST. XAVIER – Ilean Big Hair, 62, of St. Xavier, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2000, in the Billings Deaconess Medical Center.
She was born July 3, 1937, in Crow Agency, a daughter of Thomas and Edna Stops Hill. She grew up in the Crow Agency area, attended schools in St. Xavier and Hardin, and graduated from Hardin High School in 1957. She later attended the Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kan. Following her education, she worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Dixon.
She then worked in Chicago, at an area hospital until 1962 when she returned to Montana. In Montana, Ilean worked for the BIA, Crow Hospital and Pretty Eagle School before beginning a career with the Hardin School District. She retired in 1998.
Ilean was married and later divorced. She was a member of the St. Xavier Catholic Mission Church, Greasy Mouth Clan, a child of the Greasy Mouth Clan and the Big Horn District of the Crow Tribe. During her younger years, she was an avid horsewoman, becoming an accomplished barrel racer, jockey and rodeo queen. She enjoyed being with her family and rarely missed events that involved her children or grandchildren. Ilean was an avid Hardin Bulldog fan.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three sons, Joseph, Larry and Lamont.
Survivors include two sons, Lawrence (Janice) Big Hair Jr. of Hardin and Aloysius (Nora) Big Hair of Billings; three daughters, Lauren (Cameron) McCormick Sr., Lorna (Frank) Two Bulls Sr. and Leah (Phillip) Tsosie of Hardin; two adopted daughters, Verlie (Carson) Walks Over Ice of Hardin and Stella (Greely) Not Afraid of Crow Agency; three adopted sons, Jim Riggio of Pennsylvania, Thomas (Cheryl) Dawes and Norman Dawes of Crow Agency; nine sisters, Roseline (Ronnie) Yellowmule of Reno Creek, Catherine Old Crow and Jane (Wayne) Moccasin of Lodge Grass, Julia Wolf of Hardin, Nora (Harold) White Clay of St. Xavier, Violet (Harold) Enick, Mary Kate Crooked Arm, Christina Stewart and Mary Lucy (Robert) Little Light of Crow Agency; four brothers, Francis (Bertha) Bear Claw and Melvin (Arellia) Stops of Lodge Grass, Oliver (Ellen) Hill of Garryowen and Gerald Reed of Crow Agency; an adopted brother, Crawford Reed of Fort Smith; an adopted sister, Emaline Rock of Pryor; two aunts, Annie Walks of Fort Smith and Pauline Small of Lodge Grass; two uncles, Oliver and Ben Pease of Billings; two sisters-in-law, Aneda Hill of Pryor and Judy (Emery) Gray of Harlem; 31 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; special friends, Marlene Thomas and Davine Big Lake; a special niece, Ilean Hill; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Rosary will be recited 4 p.m. Thursday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday in the St. Xavier Catholic Mission. Interment will follow in the St. Xavier Mission cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Ossie ‘Rocky’ Blythe
FORSYTH – Ossie “Rocky” Blythe, 67, of Colstrip, died Monday, June 5, 2000, at his home in Forsyth.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Forsyth cemetery.

Mary Ann ‘Gert’ Bohnen
On June 5, 2000, our beloved mother and wife went to be with her Lord. She was born Jan. 31, 1943 to Mildred and Alfred Rost in Madison, Wis. and was raised in Lewiston, Minn.
In 1966, she married Larry Bohnen and together they raised three wonderful children. She was a devoted mother and wife, always supportive of all the family ventures. Her genuine caring and concern for her family and friends will be greatly missed. Throughout her courageous battle with cancer, (starting in 1988) her positive attitude and selflessness shone through. She touched the lives of all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Dickie, her father, Alfred, and her sister, Karen. Survivors include her loving husband, Larry V. Bohnen Sr.; mother, Mildred Rost of Lewistown, Minn.; oldest son, Larry V. Bohnen Jr. (Beano) and his wife Sara; middle son, Randall Alfred Bohnen; and youngest child, daughter, Natalie Ann Bohnen. Nephew, Jay Vorhess and his wife Amy; grandson, Shaun Michael Skow; mother-in-law, Elna Bohnen-Rockwell and her husband Rocky Rockwell, her beautiful, playful puppy, Gretchen and numerous other family members.
Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, June 9, at Atonement Lutheran Church, 407 Wicks Lane. Memorials may be sent to Atonement Lutheran Church or the Northern Rockies Cancer Center, 1049 N. 29th St. in Billings.

Rodney Clemens
SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Rodney Clemens, 50, did on Sunday, June 4, 2000.
Viewing will be from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7, at Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday from Immanuel Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery.

Timothy M. Daem
HELENA – Timothy Maxwell Daem, 20, died at St. Peter’s Hospital Sunday, June 4, 2000, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Vigil Service was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, in the Hagler-Anderson Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Helena Cathedral. Cremation to follow services. Interment of cremains will be in Calvary cemetery in Billings on Thursday, June 8, at 3 p.m. Memorials may be made to Legacy of Life at St. Peter’s Hospital Cancer Center, 2475 Broadway St., Helena, MT 59601.

Marcella C. Horyna
ROY – Marcella C. Horyna, 85, passed away Sunday afternoon, June 4, 2000, at the Central Montana Medical Center of natural causes.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 9, at Cloyd Funeral Chapel. Cremation has taken place. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

George R. Jenkins
ROUNDUP – George R. Jenkins, 70, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at his home south of Roundup, after a long illness of congestive heart failure.
He was born Nov. 13, 1929, in Corona, Calif., a son of George W. and Libby Kubala Jenkins. He graduated from High School in Beaumont, Calif., and later received an associate degree in communications. He had worked for Wy-Mo Communications and later for Communications Service until he retired in 1989.
George married Anne Jarvis on Nov. 12, 1973, in Las Vegas, Nev., and they have lived south of Roundup since.
He was a life member of the Billings Flying Mustangs and loved flying his models and visiting with his fellow modelers.
Survivors include his wife, Anne; four daughters, Linda Katzmann, Joyce Stapels, Valerie Sharbono and Spring Jenkins. One brother, Frank Jenkins, numerous grand and great grandchildren.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at his daughter’s home in Silesia. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements were by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Edith Manley
ROSEBUD CREEK – Edith Manley, 87, of Rosebud Creek near Busby, died Sunday, June 4, 2000, in the St. Vincent Medical Center.
She was born Dec. 16, 1912, along the banks of Rosebud Creek, a daughter of Edith Black Medicine and Henry Littlewhiteman. She received her education at the Busby Boarding School.
Edith lived a simple life, always thinking of her family. Her home was always open to any and all. She was a traditional Cheyenne Woman, who practiced her culture and respected her values deeply. She loved to pick berries, enjoyed preparing dried meat, cooking and sewing. She always offered food to her guests and always showed kindness. Her favorite pastime was playing cards with her friends and grandchildren. She supported her friends and family. She and several other Cheyenne elders were recipients of Honorary Associate of Arts Degrees from Dull Knife Memorial College in Lame Deer.
She married Elmer Brady and was later divorced., She married Pius Bear Comes Out-Manley in 1947 and the couple lived in the Busby area. He died in 1974.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Henry Brady and Ronnie Bear Come Out, an adopted son, James Manley, and three sisters, Rosie Long Jaw, Alice Littlewhiteman and Clara Holmes,
Survivors include her daughter, Hilda (Pat) Moss of Rosebud Creek; two sons, Dale (Patricia) Brady Sr. and Glen Manley of Denver, Colo.; one sister, Agnes Limpy of Rosebud Creek; an adopted brother, David Littlewhiteman of Billings; her adopted children, Nelson (Rose) Wallace of Washington, Gregory Wallace of Rosebud Creek, Carol LaForge of Billings, Charlie of Oregon, Tim and Joe Long Jaw of Rosebud Creek and Ellen Brady of Muddy Creek; her grandchildren, Ronnie and Theresa Moss, Vickie (Johnny) Rowland, Malissa (Roland) Little Bird, Dale Brady Jr., Garland (Justine) Manley, Henrietta Stewart, Jennifer Brady, Eldon, Lloyd, Henley and Henry Brady Jr., Shacazie Red Woman, Jeremiah Manley and Delray Walker; and 31 great-grandchildren.
Wake services will be held 5-9 p.m. in the Lame Deer Catholic Church and after 10 p.m. at the Manley residence on Rosebud Creek. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at the Hilda Moss residence with interment following in the Busby cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Delmer Mathis
BUFFALO, Wyo. – Delmer Mathis, 78, passed away suddenly Sunday evening, June 4, 2000, at his home north of Buffalo.
Visitation will be held from 1-10 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, June 8, at the Adams Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 8, at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Keith McDonald officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery.

Lester B. ‘Pete’ Mitchell
LIVINGSTON – Lester B. “Pete” Mitchell, 92, of Pine Creek, died at his home late Sunday evening, June 4, 2000. Cremation has taken place at Franzen-Davis Crematory in Livingston and memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 9, at Holbrook United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Greep officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Franzen-Davis Funeral Home, 118 N. Third St. in Livingston.
Pete was born Aug. 9, 1907, in Park City, the son of Burton Luther and Sara Callie Dana (Gill) Mitchell. He grew up and received his education there. After graduating from Park City High School with the class of 1927, he enrolled for a time in the Central Airplane Works aeronautical school in Chicago. While a young man, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) near Park City. He later also worked in construction in California.
On Nov. 18, 1930 he married Eula Belle Hedges in Columbus. Pete was engaged in farming and ranching most of his life, except for three years when he logged in Greenough, Mont. In 1944, the couple purchased a ranch at Pine Creek, south of Livingston. In 1971, they sold the ranching operation to their son, Melvin, but Pete continued to remain an integral part of its operation. In his later years, he was particularly proud of being the head hay baler and baled his last hay when he was 90 years old. His wife died in 1998.
As a young man Pete played baseball and boxed. During his entire life he enjoyed watching spectator sports. An avid fisherman, he fished nearly every summer afternoon (at about milking time) and while changing irrigation water. He is remembered fondly as the only irrigator known to change ditch water with a fishing pole instead of a shovel. He also gave to others his own personal trout fishing reports about the Yellowstone River. As a story teller, he enjoyed reminiscing about the “early days” near Park City and later wrote many of his recollections called “Tale Waggins” which he shared with his family and others. For the past 20 years, Pete also made folk art wishing wells, planters and airplane weather vanes in his basement workshop. He was instrumental in building Brisbin Community Hall and served on the Pine Creek School Board and the Park Branch ditch board.
Survivors include a son, Melvin Mitchell and his wife, Glenda and a granddaughter, Laura Mitchell all of the family ranch; a daughter, Audrey Bowman and her husband, Howard of Townsend and grandchildren, Debbie Webb and Lester Bowman; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Myra Randall of Mesa, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Lyle Mitchell in 1977 and by four brothers, Frank, Bill, Victor and Ralph.
Memorials in Pete’s memory may be made in support of Brisbin Community Hall, Brisbin Women’s Club, c/o Cheryl Murray, P. O. Box 71, Livingston, MT 59047, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Russell L. ‘Bummer’ Nellermoe
FALLON – Russell L. ‘Bummer’ Nellermoe, 63, passed away Monday, June 5, 2000, at his home in Fallon.
Visitation will be held at 1-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Terry. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 8, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Terry, with Father Gil Hemauer-Capuchin officiating. Interment will follow in the Veteran section of the Prairie County cemetery with full military rites.

BUSBY – Our beloved mother and grandmother, Gladys Bigback OldMouse, 79, went to be with Jesus (Maheo) June 4, 2000, at Hardin. She was born in Lame Deer on July 1, 1920, on the Northern Cheyenne Indian reservation, the daughter of James and Jenny Rising Sun Bigback.
She was a member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe from both bands of the Suhtai and Tsistsistas. She was a descendent of Alights-on-the-cloud and Iron Shirt. Gladys received her education through the eighth grade at the old Lame Deer School. She received an honorary degree from Dull Knife Memorial College in Lame Deer and she received blue ribbon awards for her fry bread and cooking abilities.
Gladys married Tee Old Mouse in Sheridan, Wyo. He preceded her in death in 1976. Gladys was a faithful church member at the Busby White River Cheyenne Mennonite Church. She worked for the Busby School as a cook’s helper for 24 years, retiring in 1979. She spent most of her life on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation. Her volunteer work for the church includes many local prayer meetings, attending church conferences in Canada and the U.S. She was a devout Christian spending the rest of her life serving God (Maheo). Her loving giving heart was felt by all her family, relatives, and the people she touched.
Survivors include her son, Ronald Sr. (Cynthia) Bigback, grandchildren, Ronald Bigback Jr., LaRonna Sue (Terry) Bad Warrior, Ann Rochelle (Everdean) Good Luck, and Lee Joseph Bigback; great-grandchildren, Ronni Jean Bigback, Sue Ann and Sophie Lynn Bad Warrior, Noah and Demery Bigback, D’Ann Irene and Everdean Good Luck Jr.; sister, Marie (Gilbert) Littlewolf; stepson, Roger (Verna) Old Mouse. She is also survived by numerous relatives, nieces, nephews, and her Church Family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Jenny Rising Sun Bigback; two brothers, Robert Bigback Sr. and Gordon Bigback.
Gladys helped raise as her daughters, Marie Brady, Maria Big Fire, Nancy Bigback, Jeanie Strange Owl, and Laretha Grinsell.
Her door was always open for those in need with loving kindness. Thank You Mom, for being there for us.
Funeral services will be held at the White River Cheyenne Mennonite Church in Busby on Thursday, June 8, at 2 p.m. Wake services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, at the church. Burial will be at the Busby cemetery.

‘Pat’ Adler Peer
SPARKS, Nev. – “Pat” Adler Peer, 68, of Sparks, died May 30, 2000, at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center.
A native of Madison, Wis., she was born Dec. 31, 1931, to Raymond and Barbara (Stumpf) Adler and had lived in Sparks for the past 36 years, coming from Las Vegas, Great Falls and Billings.
She conducted health fairs around the area and was named Nurse of the Year by the March of Dimes and Saint Mary’s Nurse of the Year in 1993 and received a Women of Achievement Award in 1993. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a past president of the Nevada State Board of Nursing.
She attended Edgewood School in Madison, Billings Central Catholic High School, and Carroll College in Helena, Mont.
Surviving are husband, Lee; daughter, Barbara Lee Larson and son, Donald Ray, all of Sparks; daughter, Marta Diane Long and son, Michael K., both of Sun Valley; son, Woodward T. of Winnetka, Calif.; five brothers, Lou of Billings, Jim of Richland Center, Wis., Dick of Missoula, Mont., Tom of Golden, Colo., Ken of Whitefish, Mont.
A parish nurse memorial scholarship fund is being established, c/o Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, 235 W. Sixth St., Reno 89520-0108.
