Emma Hekkel
FROID – Funeral services for Emma Hekkel, 71, of rural Froid, Mont., will be Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at 2 p.m. MDT, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Culbertson, Mont. Pastor Al Beyer will officiate, and burial will be in Friedens Gemeinde cemetery northwest of Culbertson.
Emma was born Jan. 6, 1929, on the family homestead northwest of Culbertson, the daughter of George and Molly (Kauffman) Damm Jr. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended school at the Damm #2 Country School. Her father died at an early age, so Emma helped out on the family farm.
After corresponding with a neighbor boy, David Hekkel, who was overseas in Europe during World War II, they courted when he returned home and were married on Oct. 2, 1948 at Froid, Mont. They farmed and raised their family southwest of Froid where they have lived since.
Emma passed away Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center in Williston after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Her family was first and foremost and she was a care-giver to both family and friends. She had a special relationship with her three granddaughters. She loved to cook, quilt, garden, and enjoyed her pets.. Emma was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Culbertson.
She is survived by her husband, David of rural Froid; one son, Duane Hekkel and his wife, Barbee of rural Froid; one daughter, Elaine Jasper and her husband, Mike of Culbertson; three granddaughters, Tammy Hekkel of rural Froid, Melissa Jasper of Anchorage, Alaska, and Jeanne Jasper of Culbertson; one brother, Alex Damm of Culbertson; one sister, Lilly Brese of Culbertson; and a special sister-in-law, Rosemarie Damm of Culbertson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Jake, George, Ted, Carl and infant Carl; and three sisters, Lea Helland, Gladys Ostwald, and Elsie Helland.
Friends may call at Trinity Lutheran Church in Culbertson on Tuesday from 1 p.m. MDT until 7 p.m. MDT, and on Wednesday from 10 a.m. MDT until service time.

Marilee LaRue Johnson
WOLF POINT – Marilee LaRue Johnson, beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, went to be with our Creator on Sunday, May 7, 2000, at the Northeast Montana Health Services Facility in Wolf Point, after a courageous battle with cancer. She fought this battle with dignity and grace, never complaining, but thankful for the time she had with her family and friends.
Marilee was born on April 14, 1937, in Havre, Mont., to Melvin and Lona Chapman. She graduated from Chinook High School and attended college in Havre.
On Dec. 19, 1954, Marilee married her best friend and true love of her life Ronald Johnson at the Presbyterian Church in Chinook. Ron joined the Montana Highway Patrol in 1963 and they settled in Wolf Point in 1965. Marilee worked for 27 years in the Headstart and Wolf Point School System and truly loved all the children that came under her tutelage and care.
Marilee was a talented artist creating many beautiful works for others to enjoy. She also took delight in reading, playing bridge, her flower gardens, and being with friends and family. She touched many lives with her gentle and understanding ways.
Marilee is survived by her parents, Melvin and Lona Chapman of Chinook; husband, Ronald, son, Dean, and daughter, Dawn Garfield, all of Wolf Point; son, Lance of Billings, and their spouses Lisa, Douglas, and Debbie; grandson, Douglas Garfield, granddaughter, Vanessa Berry and spouse, Derek, granddaughter, Shaylene Garfield and great-grandson, Stone. Her sisters Margaret, Marlene, Debbie, and a brother Derryl also survive her.
At her request, no funeral services will be held, but her friends are invited to join our family for a buffet dinner at the Elks on Sunday, June 4, at 6 p.m. Please call the Elks in Wolf Point to confirm your attendance, 653-1920. Prior to the dinner, there will be graveside services at 5 p.m. at the Greenwood cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Roosevelt County Home Health Care Agency, in care of Ron Johnson, 520 Edgar Street, Wolf Point, MT, 59201.
Clayton Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Violet French
REDSTONE – A memorial service for Violet French will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at Redstone Hall. Interment will take place in Redstone cemetery. Cremation has taken place. Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood is in charge.

Stanley W. Thornton
CULBERTSON – Stanley W. Thornton, 79, died at his home on Sunday, May 7, 2000, from lung cancer.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 12, at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Cremation has taken place. Everson-Clayton Memorial Chapel is in charge.

Rachel N. Schaffer
HILGER – Rachel N. Schaffer, 16, passed away Wednesday evening, May 3, 2000, at the Central Montana Medical Center of injuries sustained in a one vehicle accident near Hilger earlier in the evening. She was born Jan. 10, 1984, in Jesup, Ga., the daughter of Richard and Karen (Schmid) Schaffer. She lived in St. Marys, Ga. and began her schooling there. She was a captain of the cheerleaders and was active in 4H, she moved to Hilger with her mother in Nov. of 1999, and was a sophomore at Fergus High School in Lewistown, where she was active in tennis and was manager of the track team.
Rachel enjoyed swimming, being in the sun and on the beach, and was enjoying learning to ride horses.
She is survived by her mother and step-father, Karen and Doug Landru of Hilger; her father Richard Schaffer of Auburn, Wash., brother, Jarred Schaffer and step brothers, Casey and Kyle Landru all of Hilger; grandparents, Ron and Betty Schmid of Jesup, Ga., Jackie and Dennis Hall of Savannah, Ga. and Anita Schaffer of Brunswick, Ga. Several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 11, in the Fergus Center for the Performing Arts with private interment to follow. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Neil A. McJunkin
At the age of 73 Neil A. McJunkin passed away at his home May 5, 2000. Neil was born in Miles City on May 14, 1926 the son of Donovan and Gladys McJunkin. He was the fourth of eleven children. In Dec. of 1944 he was called to active duty where he served in the navy on the U.S.S. Nevada. On June 10, 1950, Neil was united in marriage to Mary (Sunny) Henderson. They have two daughters and one son: Jeri (Pete) Peterson of Vancouver, Wash.; Doug (Rhonda) McJunkin of Concrete, Wash. and Jackie (Rick) Jacobson of Billings. Also surviving are four grandsons: Chad (Kirsti) Peterson, Kris Peterson, Eric McJunkin and Chase Stroud. Four granddaughters: Dani (Shila) Magee, Mandy (Eric) Warner, Jami McJunkin and Coley Jo Stroud and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers: Keith (Shirley) McJunkin and Dennis McJunkin and four sisters: Audrey Sweeny, Colleen (Bob) Harmann, Donna (Jim) VanVeckhoven, Karen (Jim) Fulford. Neil was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Arlyn and Kaye McJunkin and sisters, Nada Watts and Velda Brummitt.
Neil farmed and later retired from the Great Western Sugar Factory. He enjoyed family dinners and loved playing horseshoes with family and friends. He loved working with his hands repairing anything that was broken and building things out of wood for his family.
Grandpa’s happiest moments were with family and friends. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. No words can express how much he will be missed.
A funeral mass will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, 2000 at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Terrace Gardens cemetery. Viewing will be held from 5 - 9 p.m. on Monday at Smith West Chapel; 304 34th street West. The casket will be closed at the church.

Lewis “Sonny” William Zeier
RYEGATE – Lewis “Sonny” William Zeier, 70 of Ryegate, passed away Friday, May 5, 2000, at Wheatland Memorial Hospital in Harlowton, after losing a lengthy and valiant battle with cancer. Sonny was born in Barber, Mont., on Sept. 14, 1929, the son of Fred and Alice (Gugler) Zeier. He attended schools in Barber, Shawmut, and Ryegate.
On June 5, 1953, he married Billie Fleck of Ryegate and built a loving family. He and his father moved houses for a living and farmed in the Big Coulee for several years. In 1967, Sonny and his wife purchased a ranch west of Ryegate where he remained ranching until the onset of his illness.
Sonny enjoyed working on his house, ranching and farming, reading western books, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and served as mayor of Ryegate.
Survivors include his wife, Billie Zeier; his mother-in-law, Millie Fleck; four children, Jackie (Dee) Howard, Kenneth Zeier, Darlene Dutch (Vern) Weenum, and Penny (Tim) Stradtman, all of Ryegate; 12 grandchildren, Shawn (Erin) Howard, Chris (Wynette) Howard, Tina, Kenny and Travis Zeier, Jarrod and Heather Weenum, Tim Jr., William, Mark, and Misty Stradtman; four great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Sarah and Kenedi Howard, and Mickenzie Howard; one brother, Robert Zeier; three sisters, Berneice (Chuck) Simcox, Lois Fairbanks (Sharon Gardner), and Freida Davidson; numerous nieces and nephews; and his special friend, Harry Makin. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Zeke and Michael, and one grandson, B.J. Zeier.
Cremation has taken place according to his wishes, and the family will hold its own private ceremony. Daddy was greatly loved and will be deeply missed. He is cherished in our hearts, present in our thoughts, and will always be remembered. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Elsie K. Kahler Kindsfater
RED LODGE – Elsie went to be with the Lord Sunday, May 7, 2000. Elsie was born on Sept. 9, 1928 to Henry and Katie Lenhardt in Billings. She attended Elder Grove and Senior High School.
Elsie was united in marriage with Harold L. Kahler on Feb. 9, 1947. Harold passed away on June 17, 1984. On Dec. 22, 1989 she was married to Richard Kindsfater.
Elsie worked for Sears Roebuck & Co. most of her adult life. She then retired to Red Lodge where she built the home she had always dreamed of. There was a lot of fishing, camping, and family get togethers during the years of raising three children. Elsie loved to dance her native German music; especially “The Polka”. After Elsie and Richard were married , she convinced him to take dancing lessons. She and Richard did a lot of traveling; joining the “Snow Bird” population during the winter. Elsie was an active member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Eagles, and Elks Lodges. “Dance in Heaven” Mom, we will love and miss you always.
Elsie is survived by her husband, Richard; daughter, Melvina (John) Sheard, son, Jerry (Patsy) Kahler, daughter-in-law, Raylene Kahler, stepson, Pat (Penny) Kindsfater. Grandchildren, Nadine (Tim) Scoville, Todd (Heidi) Peterson, Amy, Christy, Brad, Derek, David, and Leslie Kahler. Step-grandchildren, Megan Kindsfater, Mike (Traci) Sheard, and Susan Sheard. Elsie is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Nicole, Megan, Skyler, and Samantha. She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Larry Kahler, brother, Adolph and his wife Lucille Lenhardt, and brother Leo Lenhardt.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 2336 St. John Avenue, Billings. Memorials may be made to Mount Olive Church, American Diabetes Association, or charity of ones choice. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Louis Forsell
AJIJIC, Mexico – Louis Forsell, 84, formerly of Clancy and Butte.
Memorial Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2000, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 505 Logan St., Helena, Mont.

Mildred Deloris Lagerquist
HELENA – Mildred Deloris Lagerquist, 83, formerly of Westby, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Big Sky Care Center in Helena.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Westby. Interment will be in Scandia cemetery. Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood is in charge.

Louis Forsell
AJIJIC, Mexico – Louis Forsell, 84, formerly of Clancy and Butte.
Memorial Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2000, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 505 Logan St., Helena, Mont.

Constance S. Cummings
A memorial service will be held for family and friends of Constance S. Cummings from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2000, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 1241 Crawford Drive.

Jerry Doroshenko
CHANDLER, Ariz. – Jerry Doroshenko, of Chandler, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, in Chandler following a lengthy illness.
He was born Aug. 19, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He received his master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati and worked throughout his life as a geologist. The WWII Navy veteran lived many years in Billings and moved to Arizona in December of 1999.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jean Doroshenko; one daughter, Tina Schreiber and one son, John Doroshenko; also survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
At his request, no services will be held. Contributions to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014 have been suggested by his family.

Louis Forsell
MEXICO – Louis Forsell, 84, formerly of Clancy and Butte.
Memorial Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2000, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 505 Logan St., Helena, Mont.

Carl J. Barz
Carl J. Barz, 89, passed away on May 1, 2000, at St. Johns Lutheran Home. Carl was born on Sept. 17, 1910, in Snyder, Neb., to William and Mary Barz. He graduated from Fremont, Neb., High School and graduated from Midland College in Fremont. On July 1, 1934, he married Marjorie Petersen in Fremont. They lived in Fairbury, Neb., where Carl managed a wholesale grocery warehouse for H.P. Law Co. until 1953 when they moved to Billings. Carl worked for Northland Steel Co. for 31 years and retired as president and chairman of the board in 1984.
He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, cooking, woodcarving, gem cuffing, bird watching, gardening, archeology, geology, potting, and numerous craft projects. Carl loved his hobbies, but always found time to spend on special projects for his many good friends and family. He and Marj were enthusiastic sports fans, and attended thousands of local sports events throughout the years. They seldom missed a grandson’s or granddaughter’s sports competition. Carl, an Eagle Scout, spent many years as a scout leader, developing many fine young citizens of whom he was very proud.
Carl served as an elder of the First Presbyterian Church and enjoyed the Woodcarvers and Ducks Unlimited. He was also a 47-year member of Billings Rotary, a Paul Harris Fellow, and served as its president from 1964 to 1965.
His family includes his wife, Marjorie; a daughter, Mary Lou (David) Camp, Carson City, Nev.; and two grandchildren, Gibb (Kathy) Camp and Susan (David) Landers; and two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Dulcinea Landers, Boise, Idaho; and great-grandsons, Paul and Kevin Landers, Longmont, Colo.; son, Art (Sandy) of Billings, and granddaughters, Darcy Barz, Chicago, Karla (Rick) Stauffer, Grapevine, Texas, and Tonya (Tyler) Bush, Fredericksburg, Va; and son, Dan (Diane) and grandson, Rocky Barz of Billings. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends are invited to a wake in celebration of Carl’s life on Saturday, May 13 at 7 p.m. at the home of Art and Sandy Barz, 1928 Lyndale Lane. Please bring your favorite hunting, fishing, or other “Carl Story”!
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be on May 14, at 2 p.m., at Michelotti-Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary, 1001 Alderson Avenue in Billings. Memorials may be made to Family Services, Inc. or the charity of your choice.
