Dee O. Marshall
HELENA – Dee O. Marshall was born in Judith Gap on Nov. 26, 1915, to Albert H. and Maude C. Marshall and attended schools in Harlowton.
Dee was a WWII U.S. Army veteran of the Pacific Theater during the Philippine liberation and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered during the battle of Luzon.
He married Ruth Duncan of Harlowton in 1939 and moved to Helena in 1951 where they raised four children. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years before his retirement in 1980. He was a member of the VFW, DAV and the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Rosalie of Escondido, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law, Gayle and Chuck Schmidt of Billings and Sharon and Roger Wheeldon of Helena; a sister, Maxine Anderson of Missoula; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Ruth; son, Marvin and daughter, Myrna.
Cremation has taken place at Cremation or Funeral Gallery, Cremation Society of Montana. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Retz Funeral Home in Helena. Inurnment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Helena.

Alan Dale Sannon
Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Alan Dale Sannon, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2000, after suffering a heart attack.
Alan was born Jan. 21, 1945, in Billings, son of John and Leona Sannon. Alan attended public schools in Billings and was then drafted into the Army in 1965. Alan served as a military police officer until he was honorably discharged in 1967. He also served in the Army Reserve.
He married Teresa Ann O’Dea on Sept. 9, 1967, in Billings. Alan retired from Ryan’s Super Value after 23 years and had recently worked at Pittsburgh Paints Center.
Alan loved spending time with his family and friends. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, and gardening. You could also find Dad playing cards with his poker buddies and playing keno machines.
Alan is survived by his loving wife, Teresa; two brothers, three sisters; his children, Steve (Chris) Sannon of Granite Falls, Wash., Annette (Jon) Bergendahl of Billings, Danielle (Kevin) Thomas of Missoula, Georgette Sannon of Billings; three granddaughters, Lindsey and Taylor Sannon of Granite Falls, Wash., and Samantha Bergendahl of Billings, and two new expectant grandchildren in August 2000 and February 2001.
Dad, you will be truly missed by all. You have always lent a helping hand to others, especially to your family by babysitting and home building projects.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Bernard’s Parish, Friday, July 21, at 10 a.m. followed by a luncheon at the church.
Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be made to St. Vincent NICU.
Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Thomas L. Stapleton
FROMBERG – Our loving husband, father, grandfather and friend will be greatly missed by a large and loving family.
Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 21, at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 332 Griffing Drive, Billings Heights. Memorials may be sent to Special Olympics or March of Dimes.
Cremation has taken place at Cremation or Funeral Gallery of Billings.

Alan J. Thomas
Alan J. Thomas, age 36, of Billings went to be with his Lord July 15, 2000. Alan was a man with a life full of many ups and downs; despite his struggles he still loved us. He worked hard to be happy, and he tried to follow God. We dearly love you always, Alan! God Bless You!
Survivors include his parents, Mike and Bonnie Thomas and his son, David of Billings; sisters, Maria (Glenn) Kuhel of Phoenix, Sally (Scoff) Wahl of Three Forks, Barbara (Dene) Halle of Phoenix, Ann (Steve) Krump of Portland, Carrie (Mac) Lavier of Portland, Bonnie Rose (Chris) Welles of San Francisco; brothers, Michael and David of Billings; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by paternal and maternal grandparents and several cousins.
Vigil services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 21, at St. Pius X. Mass of Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 22, at St. Pius X. Interment will follow at Holy Cross cemetery.
Memorials may be made to: Montana Rescue Mission, 2822 Minnesota Ave., Billings, MT 59101. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Gordon E. Waller
FROMBERG – Gordon E. Waller died on July 18, 2000, at the St. Vincent Hospital after a courageous battle with leukemia. He went quietly in the company of his loving family.
Gordon was born on Oct. 18, 1947, in North Platte, Neb., son of Ernest Gordon and Betty Waller. His younger years were spent on the family farm near North Platte. These years instilled in Gordon a love of the land and animals.
Gordon attended a country school south of North Platte, graduated from North Plane High School and North Platte Community College in 1967 and South East Nebraska Community College in 1969.
Gordon’s career for his lifetime was as a locomotive engineer. He worked for Union Pacific and than later for Montana Rail Link. He was always proud of being the one to “blow the whistle and ring the bell!”
Gordon was a very special man who had a wonderful sense of humor and a deep and abiding love for his family and friends. Gordon was a member of Locomotive Engineer 812. Gordon was also a partner in the Clark’s Fork Pioneer Newspaper up until it closed on Dec. 31, 1999. He took pride in his community activities.
Preceding Gordon in death were his father, Ernest Walter; sister, Debbie Waller; grandparents, Lloyd and Irene Bowling and Iva and Marie Waller.
Surviving Gordon is his wife, Carol of Fromberg; mother and father, Bob and Betty Lien of Billings; sons, Jeremy of Fromberg and James of Cheyenne, Wyo.; daughters, Laurie I. Fritts of Boulder, and Jacqueline Griffin of Scottsdale, Ariz.; sister and brother-in-law, Denise and John Fraser of Soquel, Calif.; and two nephews, Chase and Max Fraser, also of Soquel.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel, Mont., at 10 a.m. Friday, July 21.

William L. Biggs
William L. Biggs, 72, of Billings passed away Tuesday morning, July 18, 2000, at St. Vincent Hospital.
William was born on Nov. 1, 1927, in Bismarck, N.D., a son of Shirkey and Edna Biggs. He was raised in Washington and in 1944 entered the Navy, serving his country until 1947. On Aug. 27, 1948, he married Irene Mettler in Bismarck.
In 1955, William and his family moved to Billings where he worked for Keil driving truck. In 1960, he began work with Yellow Cab, combining his love for people and driving until 1984 when a stroke forced his retirement.
Survivors include his son, Greg; a daughter, Yvonne Pena Biggs; his mother, Edna Gustafson; and sister, Janice Ridl, all of Billings, as well as numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many dear friends, including Myrtle Cartwright and Laura Mutchler. William was preceded in death by his father; wife; a brother, Don; and two daughters, Sandra Shrum Metzger and Brenda Bargas.
Visitations may be made from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19, at Smith Downtown Chapel. Cremation will follow with private interment of cremains on Friday at Terrace Gardens cemetery. A public memorial gathering will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, in the main dining area of Prairie Towers, 725 North 25th Street. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys Vining Smart Davidson
BOZEMAN – Gladys Vining Smart Davidson, 70, of Bozeman, passed away July 15, 2000, in Billings. She was born March 14, 1930, on the family ranch near Two Dot, to Forrest V. and Zelma B. (Robertson) Smart. She graduated from Harlowton High School in 1948. She attended St. Patrick’s School of Nursing in Missoula.
On June 24, 1950, Gladys married Dean Davidson in Billings. They lived in Joliet, Hardin, Sidney, Billings, and for the past 34 years, in Bozeman. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary together with a trip to Bannock and dinner at Lydia’s restaurant in Butte.
A beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, aunt, foster mother, caregiver, friend, and neighbor, Gladys sought always to serve her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her greatest joy was in sharing her home and blessings with her family and many, many others. She poured herself into creating lovely knitted, crocheted, tatted and handcrafted items. Most of her handiwork was given to others as tokens of her love. There are hundreds of children across the United States who have been blessed by baby blankets Gladys lovingly made for them.
Gladys loved to sing and had a beautiful second soprano voice, which she freely shared in church choir, solo performances, and community pageants. She loved company, making everyone who visited her home feel welcome. Her generous hospitality will be long recalled. She was deeply committed to her family and enjoyed making many dishes for the annual Smart family reunions. Her famous prize-winning angel food cakes will be especially remembered with fondness.
For the past seven years, Gladys suffered immeasurably from rheumatoid arthritis. Her unwavering faith, courage, dignity and grace was an inspiration to all who have been privileged to know her. She never ceased giving her relationship with the Lord credit for her ability to cope.
Survivors include her husband, Dean, of Bozeman; sons and spouses: Dale and Kay Davidson of Phoeniz; Dan and Georgia Davidson of Simi Valley, Calif.; daughters and spouses: Donna and Rick Lewis of Junction City, Ore.; Carla and Ross Kelly of Fredricksburg, Va.; sisters and spouses: Harriet Osborne of Denver, Cora and Robert Crossley of Murray, Utah, and Zelma and Jess Etchemendy of Twin Falls, Idaho; sister-in-law, Shirley Smart of Fromberg; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; numerous foster children; cousins, and nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were six brothers, Oscar, Forrest Elmer, Donald, Richard, Jack, and Phillip Smart; and three sisters: Alice Meinke, Dorothy Hayman, and Ruth Fellows.
A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, July 19 at 10 a.m. at Christian Center Assembly of God, 921 W. Mendenhall, Bozeman, with Pastor David Delgatty officiating. Refreshments will follow at the church. A graveside service will also be held Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the community cemetery west of Harlowton, with son-in-law, the Reverend Rick Lewis, giving a farewell. A reception will follow at 7 p.m. at the Moose Lodge in Harlowton. Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service, Bozeman, is in charge of arrangements. Kathryn E. Dvarishkis
MEETEETSE, Wyo. – Kathryn E. Dvarishkis, 85, died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at the Madison Valley Hospital at Ennis, Mont.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 22, from St. Andrews Episcopal Church at Meeteetse.

Glenn Grist
TERRY – Glenn Raymond Grist, 80, passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Visitation will begin Friday, July 21, at 11 a.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Terry. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 21, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Terry. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 22, in the Evangelical Church of North America in Fallon. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Prairie County cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Terry is in charge of the arrangements.

Clarence Robert ‘Bob’ Groscop
Clarence Robert (Bob) Groscop, age 73, of Billings died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at his home.
He was born in Ballantine, \ on June 13, 1927, the son of Carl and Katherine Groscop. He graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1945. He enlisted in the U.S. Army the same year and served in Korea and Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1947.
On Dec. 28, 1947, Bob married Esther Hoffman. Bob and Esther lived in Billings and started a family. He drove a delivery truck for Ryan Grocery. In 1958, they purchased the Rosebud Mercantile, which they owned and operated until 1967. Returning to Billings, Bob hauled grain for G.D. Eastlick for a short time before driving for Wilbur Sheely for 10 years. Bob then purchased the truck and became owner/operator leasing through G.D. Eastlick.
During his trucking years, he was known on the CB radio as “Big Head, ” the German translation of Groscop. Bob retired from trucking after 30 years and over three million accident-free miles.
From your wife, sister, children, grandchildren, great-grandchild and extended family, “You will be greatly missed and you will always be in our hearts.”
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Esther; sons, Don (Becky) Groscop and Dennis Groscop; daughters, Sharon (Tom) Tripp and Charolette (Joe) Nedens, all of Billings; a sister, Shirley Vashler of Billings; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Elsie Kober and Arlene Schuck; a son, James and two grandsons.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 20, at Smith’s West Chapel, 304 34th St. W. Interment will follow at Mountview cemetery. Visitation will start 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association.

James Malcom Jones
LIVINGSTON – James Jones, 79, formerly of Laurel, passed away Sunday morning, July 16, 2000, at the Livingston Memorial Hospital. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, at the Franzen-Davis Funeral Home, 118 N 3rd Street. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 20, at Heritage Baptist Church, 626 N 13th Street. Graveside committal and burial will follow in Mountain View cemetery. Reverend Glen R. Heilig will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Franzen-Davis Funeral Home.
James was born April 20, 1921, in Brantley, Ala., the son of James Alex and Verby Lee (Everage) Jones. As a young child, James moved with his family to the Kirbyville, Texas, area. He grew up and received his education there. As a young man during the tough years of the depression, Jim went to work in shipyards in various places along the Gulf Coast of Texas.
In 1942, he moved north to Montana, where he began a long career in the railroad industry. He met and married Monica Wanner in 1944 and began a family. Later they were divorced. He worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad as a heavy equipment operator. His work took him to various places in both Montana and North Dakota.
He married Anna Belle Watts-Swanson in Bozeman in 1968. It was about this time that his work allowed him to stay in Laurel and he finished his career there. Jim retired in the early 1980s, he and Anna Belle moved to Livingston where they have resided since.
James favorite hobbies were fishing and camping; he would never tire of either. There were always places to go and fish to catch. He enjoyed visiting family and friends. Jim was a member of the Park County Senior Citizens and was involved in many of their activities. His was a very active member of Heritage Baptist Church, as that was very important to him. Jim will be greatly missed by all.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Anna Belle of Livingston; two sons, Roger “Butch” Jones and his wife Molly of Livingston, Jerry Jones of Kalispell; three daughters, Ladean “Sissy” Miscampbell of Kalispell, Nelda Adams of Billings, Cheri Volk and her husband Jim of Pinehurst, Idaho; three step-children, Leona Kirkpatrick and her husband Duane of Glendive, Ray Swanson and his wife Connie of Manhattan, Irvin Swanson and his wife Sue of Belgrade; three brothers, Charles Jones and his wife Jo Lynn, Napoleon Jones, John Jones and his wife Martha Fae, all of Kirbyville, Texas; four sisters, Laura Ethel Jackson, of Kirbyville, Verla Mae Smith of Newton, Texas, Eva Rae Yeates and Kathryn Ruth Davis and her husband Cloyoe, of Gilmer, Texas; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Memorials in Jim’s memory may be directed to Heritage Baptist Church, 626 N 13th Street, Livingston, MT 59047.

Bobby D. Lackey
THERMOPOLIS, Wyo. – Bobby D. Lackey, 68, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at his home in Thermopolis.
Memorial services will be held by the family. Cremation has taken place. Mortimore Funeral Home was in charge.

Kenneth E. Larson
SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Kenneth Elmer Larson, 80, died on Monday, July 17, 2000, at the Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.
Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, at Champion Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 22 in Woonsocket, S.D., at the Lutheran Church. Interment will follow in the Woonsocket cemetery.

Wilma Leonard
Wilma Leonard, 76, died on Monday, July 17, 2000.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Dahl Funeral Chapel with interment at Terrace Gardens. Luncheon to follow at St. John’s Hobby Room at 12:30-2:30 p.m.

Altha Mae Mcknire
THERMOPOLIS, Wyo. – Altha Mae Carrell Mcknire, 80, died July 17, 2000, at Scripts Memorial Hospital in LaJolla, Calif., after a short illness.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 22, at Mortimore Funeral Home in Thermopolis. Interment will follow at Monument Hill cemetery.
