Lucile ‘Trudnowski’ Murchison
SPOKANE, Wash. – Lucile “Lou” Murchison died Saturday, July 8, 2000, in Spokane, Wash., her home for the past three years. Prior to that she lived in Portland, Ore., for over 53 years.
She was born Nov. 27, 1908, in Sheridan, Wyo. Her family moved to Harlowton, Mont., in 1912. After graduating from Harlowton High School, she worked as a telephone operator in Harlo before moving to Portland in 1944.
Lucile married Kenneth Murchison in Portland in 1947. He preceded her in death in 1966. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Helen, Cassie, Hattie and brothers, Ted and Marion.
She liked to travel and visit family and also took a few cruises. She had a good sense of humor and loved a good joke. She loved the outdoors. She kept detailed records of happenings in her large family. Lucile loved poetry and was very proud of her Polish American heritage.
Nephews Paul and Bruce Painter, Jerry, James and John Trudnowski, Charles Tadewaldt and nieces Lorraine Samuel and Dr. Katherine Trudnowski survive her.
Liturgy of the Word will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church followed by interment at St. Joseph’s cemetery, Fr. Michael Poole officiating.

Antonia Lin ‘Toni’ Scheiber
CODY, Wyo. – Antonia Lin “Toni” Scheiber, 20, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at West Park Hospital.
Cremation has taken place. A private family memorial service will be held. Ballard Funeral Home was in charge.

Alys Jane Schmitt
LEWISTOWN – Alsy Jane Schmitt, age 79, died from natural causes at a Lewistown hospital Wednesday July 12, 2000. She had been hospitalized the previous month.
Memorial services will be conducted Monday, July 17, at 4:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Stanford. Creel Funeral Home of Lewistown is in charge of arrangements.
Alys was born May 9, 1921, in Bozeman to Anna and Lawrence Watson. She attended Bozeman schools and graduated from Montana State College in 1943. On June 8, 1943, she married her college sweetheart, Lloyd B. Schmitt, in Bozeman.
They moved to Stanford where he worked for the Federal Land Bank for many years and she became a homemaker and business partner while raising six sons.
The Schmitts, who owned and operated Schmitt Ranch and Meats, became nationally known for innovations in the cattle industry and created the Production Indexing Center, the first privately owned sire testing station in Montana. They were charter members of the Beef Improvement Foundation, American Simmental Association, and Performance Registry International.
Alys was an active member of the Stanford Women’s Club, MSU Alumni Association, Presbyterian Women’s Club, Stanford Booster Club and was an avid bridge player.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two sisters, a son, J.B. in 1979 and her husband in 1995.
Survivors include five sons: Don and wife, Sharman of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Lee and his fiancČe, Linda of Stanford, Ben and his wife, Sue of Helena, Bob and his wife, Maureen of Chinook, Tom and his wife, Liz of Glasgow; daughter-in-law, Sally Schmitt and her fiancČ, Dale, of Bozeman; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials in her honor may be made to: Stanford Booster Club, Stanford, MT 59479.

Rose Marie Scott
LOS MOLINOS, Calif. – Rose Marie Scott, 76, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at a local hospital. Private family services and inurnment are planned. Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home was in charge.

Margaret E. Spicer
RED LODGE – Margaret E. Spicer followed her life-long guardian Angel to be with our Lord on July 12, 2000, following a brave battle over several years with cancer. A fighter all the way.
Known as “Midge” to her family, she is survived by a brother, Walter and wife, Harriet Spicer of Placerville, Calif.; a sister, Jacqueline Amend of Charlo; and a sister-in-law, Judy Spicer of Marion, N.C.; a niece, Pamela Amend of Charlo; two nephews, Terry Spicer and family of Placerville, and Richard Spicer and family of Herndon, Va. Midge was preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth and Walter Spicer Sr. and a brother, Francis Spicer.
Midge was raised in Elizabethton, Tenn., and graduated from East Tennessee State Co1lege, becoming a school librarian for several years. She then became a much respected and loved school teacher of elementary age children. She loved children and thoroughly enjoyed a long teaching career making a real difference in so many young lives.
Upon retirement she selected to make her home on 20 acres west of Red Lodge in 1989. Her second love after teaching was animals, especially cats and dogs in need of love, patience and medical care.
Cremation has taken place and at her request there will not be a formal service. The Olcott Funeral Chapel is assisting with arrangements. The family requests all memorials be given to the Beartooth Nature Center in Red Lodge, of which Margaret was a great supporter.
“Midge, ” we will miss you and your teasing ways. We know “Margaret” will be missed by all her adopted Red Lodge family and friends. Say hello to Charlie the cat who passed away only a few days before you followed your Guardian Angel.

Deborah Lee Stanaway
LAKE STEVENS, Wash. – Deborah Lee Stanaway, age 49, passed away peacefully on June 15, to start her eternal life with our Lord Jesus in heaven. Debbie will be missed very much by her husband Bob; best friend and daughter Monica; mother, Betty; sister, Ginney (Joe); brother, John; sister-in-law, Joann (Bob); brother-in-law, Tim (Divina); nieces, Tanya, Sarah, Kera, Carrie, Kim, Blakeley and Katelynn; nephews, Jay and Jeff; dogs, Maggie and Rufuss; other family in Washington and Montana, and many friends in Lake Stevens.
Debbie was born in Billings to Betty and Mario Gaudina on April 28, 1951. As a teenager, her family moved to Seattle where she went to Shorecrest High School, class of 1970. She later met and married her husband of 26 years, Robert Stanaway.
In 1978, Robert and Debbie had a baby girl they named Monica. Debbie was a successful house mom and wife for 26 years, her daughter thanks her for being her mom and friend and for always being there.
To the sweetest mommy and wife. We will love you always and forever.
At her request there will be no services.

Virginia ‘Ginny’ Ruth Zimmerman
Virginia “Ginny” Ruth Zimmerman of Billings passed away at home on July 13, 2000, alter a courageous battle against cancer.
Ginny was born in Butte, on March 18, 1948, the daughter of Charles and Lois Zimmerman. She graduated from Girls’ Central High School in Butte in 1966. Ginny attended the University of Alaska at Anchorage and graduated in 1971 from Montana State University in Bozeman.
Ginny had fallen in love with Alaska and lived there off and on until December 1981, working with the Small Business Administration and the Department of the Treasury. Homer, Alaska, was her favorite spot in the world. The mountains were a love Ginny acquired as a child from biking in the mountains with her father while picnicking with her family.
While in Alaska in 1979, Jesus became her Lord and Savior. She attended the Abbott Loop Christian Center in Anchorag. In 1981, Ginny traveled to Milwaukee, Wis., with a group of beloved friends to help establish a church. While in Milwaukee, Ginny worked for several years with Wisconsin Gas.
In December of 1986, Ginny traveled to Honduras to adopt her first child, Samantha Ruth Zimmerman. Sam was named after Ginny’s maternal grandparents, Sam and Ruth Rice from Townsend, Mont. In November of 1990, Ginny again traveled to Honduras and adopted another child, Shelley Renee Zimmerman. Shelley was named after Ginny’s sister, Shelley, and niece, Libby Renee Zimmerman. Ginny viewed the children as blessings from God and was always thankful to her Savior for giving her the opportunity to adopt them.
in 1995, Ginny and the children moved to Billings to be closer to her sister Shelley. She worked for the Child Support Enforcement Division of the State of Montana. Ginny became a very active and devoted member of the New Life Church, and much of her life centered around her religion and her fellow worshippers.
Survivors include her children of the family home, her brother, Mike and his wife, Jan of San Jose, Calif.; her sister, Shelley of Billings; her brother, Bob of Thompson Falls; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Lois Zimmerman.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held July 17, at 10 a.m. at the New Life Church, 3950 Temple Place, Billings. Interment will take place at 5 p.m. the same day in Holy Cross cemetery in Townsend, where she will be buried between her mother and father.
Memorials may be made to the New Life Church, 3950 Temple Place, Billings, MT or Big Sky Hospice and Bereavement Center, 123 S. 27th St., Billings, MT. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Patrick H. Cain
MILES CITY – Patrick Horace “Pat” Cain, 47, died Monday, July 10, 2000, as the result of a motorcycle/truck accident.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 14, in the chapel in Miles City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Custer County cemetery with full military honors.

Avis V. Carlin
Avis V. Carlin, of Billings, passed away at her home Monday evening, July 10, 2000, in the loving company of her family. Her death ended a courageous battle with a number of health problems.
Avis was born Jan. 7, 1916, in Colgate, Mont., the daughter of Oscar E. and Anna (Bjerken) Gram. While growing up, she moved with her parents and family to Fallon, Glendive and Forsyth where she graduated from high school in 1933. She attended Northwestern Business College in Spokane, Wash. She was employed with Midland Production Credit Association in Billings and later with the Department of Interior’s Fish & Wildlife Service from 1949 to 1976, when she retired.
Avis was united in marriage Feb. 7, 1937, to Parl H. Carlin in Red Lodge.
Avis enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, crafts, crossword puzzles, and traveling. Avis and Parl were active for many years with the Muscular Dystrophy Assn., the American Legion, and bowled on a Federal Team. Avis was currently a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
Avis is survived by her daughter-in-law, Roberta K. Malcolm Carlin, her granddaughter, Wendy both of Boulder City, Nev.; her sisters, Evelyn (Homer) Wallace of Grand Junction, Colo., Doris Dahlman, Betty Bourne, Jean (Jim) Dickson, and a brother, Oscar (Marian) Gram, all of Billings, and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, Dennis R., her granddaughter, Angela C. Carlin, sisters, Adelaide Gram, Augusta Griggs and brother, Lloyd Gram.
Graveside services will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens on Friday, July 14, at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 2939 Colton Blvd., Billings. A reception will follow the service at the church. Dahl Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Crittenden
COLUMBUS – Virginia June Crittenden, 85, formerly of Billings, passed away Tuesday evening, July 11, 2000, at the Beartooth Manor in Columbus.
Virginia is survived by her daughter, Ellen Shea of Arvada, Colo.; two sons, Norman (Marlene) Hart of Clewiston, Fla., and Jack Hibbert of Arizona; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Cremation is planned and in keeping with her wishes no public services will be held. Smith Downtown Chapel of Billings is in charge of arrangements.

Donald E. Culver
GLENDIVE – Donald Edward Culver, 87, died on Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at the Glendive Medical Center.
Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 13, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 14, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glendive. Rite of Committal with military honors will be in the Dawson County cemetery.

Ervin William Kaatz
Ervin William Kaatz, born Aug. 21, 1928, passed away on July 11, 2000, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. He was born to Helmuth and Martha Kaatz in Sisseton, S.D. He graduated high school in Sisseton and attended college in Heron, S.D. During the Korean Conflict, he served in the Army.
In 1956, he married Lois Knudson, they had five children.
Erv worked in the oil fields before moving in 1964 to Wolf Point where he was hired by the U.S. Postal Service. He lived in Wolf Point for 12 years before moving to Billings. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1994.
Erv enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting, yard work, gardening and pinochle.
He is survived by two sons, Jim and Jason Kaatz of Billings; three daughters, Pam (Mitch) Chapin and Karla Kaatz of Billings, and Cheryl (Bob) Stracener of Wolf Point; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Vera Bassett and Yvonne Torvick; and two brothers, Robert and Lester Kaatz. Also surviving is Lois Kaatz of Billings.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Ada Kaatz and Adella O’Toole, and a great grandson, Logan Stracener.
Erv will be missed dearly by all his family and friends.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Private interment with military honors is planned at Yellowstone Valley Memorial Park.

Gregory L. Locken Jr.
Gregory L. Locken Jr., 26, of Billings, passed away July 12, 2000.
He was born Sept. 16, 1973, in Billings, the son of Gregory L. Locken Sr. and Louise (Lu-Ann) Barman.
Gregory was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. Spending time with his friends and family was also a great source of enjoyment.
He is survived by his parents; grandparents, Mary and LeRoy Locken and Norman Paulson and Trudy Paulson; brothers, Jerred Berns and Taylor Barman; sisters, Susan Hodges, April Berns and Leinanai Hance, all of Billings; cousins, Jennifer and Jessica Locken; his fiancee, Robin Cruse and her son, Jordan; aunt, Dawn Morgan; and two uncles, Butch Paulson and Darrel Locken; and nieces, Tammy and Kennedy; and two nephews, Trevor and Zane.
A private gathering of family and friends will be held, with cremation to follow. Cremation or Funeral Gallery is in charge of arrangements.

Loren Lodwig
MILES CITY – Loren Lodwig, 65, died on Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at the St. Vincent Hospital in Billings due to complications during heart surgery.
Visitation will be Friday at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Prayer services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 14, in the chapel of the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 15, in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Miles City. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery.
