Margaret Birtic
BAKER – Margaret Birtic, 80, of Baker, passed away on July 1, 2000, at Fallon Medical Nursing Home from a multitude of health problems.
She was born the daughter of Henry and Inga Tronstad on May 8, 1920. Her father came to America from Norway in 1911 and her mother in 1913. They met in America, got married and settled near Webster. Her father died when she was 4 years old.
Margaret spoke only Norwegian until she attended school where teachers insisted they speak only English in school as well as at home. She soon forgot her first language. She was a good student and attended some high school.
At the age of 18, on July 9, 1938, she married Frank Birtic and they resided at Knobs where they raised their three children. They built a very small starter house and later enlarged it twice through the years as the family grew.
Margaret ran the Knobs Post Office. She was temporarily assigned Oct. 8, 1945, and permanently assigned on March 31, 1946. This was done from a space created out of the corner of her kitchen. She had this position until the postal service closed it on Jan. 31, 1951. She always had coffee and cake waiting for the rural postmaster who delivered mail twice a week. This practice continued long after the post office closed.
One of life’s pleasures for her was her flower garden. She always had flowers and took great pride in them. She guided the entire family through the planting of huge vegetable gardens that left surplus for selling. For many years, she raised over 100 turkeys that would be slaughtered in the fall and shipped out via train from Baker. Chickens were raised in large numbers and the eggs sold in exchange for groceries as well as cows milked for the cream that could be sold. It was also shipped out in big cream cans to the Mandan Creamery from the Baker Depot. She was an excellent seamstress, taking old dresses, carefully taking out the stitching and cutting new dress designs from the old fabric. She encouraged her girls in 4-H, and many hours were spent teaching them to sew, can and freeze. She could always be found in the hay field as well as building haystacks, or in the earlier years shocking oats and corn with her children.
She will be remembered for the hard worker she was, and her persistence that her children would have a college education.
In 1987, she moved to Baker and enjoyed going to school activities that her grandchildren were involved in. After she had her by-pass surgery, that slowed her down tremendously and eventually led to her moving to the nursing home, where she resided till her death.
Survivors include her brothers, Einar Tronstad of Denver and her half-brother, Mads Anderson, also of Denver; two daughters, Joan and her husband, Mike Atteberry of Portland, Ore., and Juliet (Judy) and her husband, Darold Brown of Baker; one son, George of Lame Deer; two grandsons, Keith Atteberry and his wife, Christy of Danville, Calif., and Karl Atteberry and his wife, Stacey of Portland, Ore.; four granddaughters, Amie Rotondo and Tiffany Brown of Dickinson, N.D., Nicole Brown of Baker, and Kellie Brown at MSU in Billings, Mont.; seven great-grandchildren, Corin, Courtney, Devan and Matthew Atteberry, Danielle and Dominik Rotondo, and Treston Erickson; numerous nieces and nephews.
Her parents preceded her in death, as well as her husband, Frank; her sisters, Bertha Chesmore and Olga Madler; her brothers Henry and Art Tronstad.
Family and friends may gather at the funeral home on Thursday, July 6, at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 7, in Stevenson Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Catholic cemetery at Bonnievale cemetery at Baker.
