Dorothy Elliott
MILES CITY – Prayer services for Dorothy Elliott, 68, will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31, in the chapel of Stevenson & sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery.

Donna P. Hoiness
LAUREL – Donna P. Hoiness, 97, went into the arms of Jesus on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at Laurel Evergreen Health & Rehabilitation Center where she had been a patient for the past five weeks.
Donna was born on July 12, 1903, in Gilboa, Ohio, a daughter of George and Maud (McCafferty) McCartney. She came to Montana with her family in 1913, settling on a farm north of Red Lodge.
On Feb. 12, 1929, she married Sidney R. Hoiness in Red Lodge. They rented a farm on Volney Creek and farmed there until the spring of 1947 when they purchased their place north of Roberts. They farmed at Roberts until retiring to Fromberg in 1976. Donna and Sid enjoyed their retirement years and always looked forward to attending the activities of the Montana and Wyoming Fiddlers Association. Donna also enjoyed flowers and having friends over to visit. She moved to Laurel in 1994.
Mrs. Hoiness was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Sidney, in 1992; her great-grandson, Jason; her parents, two brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include her son, Lewis Hoiness and his wife, Virginia, of Park City; four grandsons; one granddaughter; and 12 great-grandchildren. Also one sister, Micky Hoines, and one brother, Edward McCartney, both of Red Lodge; one sister-in-law, Thelma McCartney of Hubert, Okla.; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, in the Olcott Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in the Rockvale cemetery. Memorials may be given to the charity of choice.

Dan R. Hunt
Dan R. Hunt, 87, of Billings, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2000. The son of Roy and Hazel Hunt, he was born Aug. 17, 1913, in Swan, Iowa, where he lived until 1927. He then relocated to California and graduated from Compton High in 1931 where he was very active in sports and received a football scholarship to Drake University.
He married Maxine Vender Ploeg May 20, 1939. They lived in Iowa until 1948 and moved to Red Lodge where he was in the hardware business. In 1950, he relocated to Billings where he worked in real estate, insurance and auto sales. In 1975, he purchased a mobile home park in Laurel. He returned to Billings in 1990.
Dan enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, and all sports. He loved to travel. He was a Laurel golf club member for 20 years.
He is survived by his spouse, Maxine Hunt; two sons, Gary and Kenneth Hunt; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial will be 10 a.m. Friday at Cremation or Funeral Gallery, 8 St. W. and St. John’s. Inurnment will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to: Optimist Club of Billings, 1434 Granite Ave., Billings, MT 59102.
Arrangements ware made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

John Killworth
TACOMA, Wash. – Graveside services for John Killworth, 83, formerly of Miles City, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, in the Custer County cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge.

Kevin R. Kuzara
SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Kevin Richard Kuzara, 36, formerly of Bellevue, Neb., died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, in Sarabaya, Indonesia.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1, at Holy Name Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is in charge.

E.L. ‘Gene’ Landers
LEWISTOWN – E. L. “Gene” Landers, who opened a hardware store in Lewistown in 1941, died on Aug. 27 at Central Montana Hospital. He was 89.
Gene was sent from Billings by Strain Brothers Co. to open the store in downtown Lewistown. In 1949, Sears, Roebuck and Co bought out Strain Brothers.
Landers was held in high esteem by officials in the giant corporation. Although Sears was disposing of its small hardware stores across the country by the late 1960s, the company waited until Gene retired in 1975 to close the Lewistown store.
Born in Washoe, Wash., to a mining family, Landers lived in Bearcreek and Red Lodge and completed high school in Stanford, Mont.
Landers had two children with Pat, his first wife, who died in 1971. Gene is survived by his second wife, Phyllis, and his children: Pat Zinnecker (Dean) of Helena and Rich Landers (Meredith) of Spokane, Wash. His four grandchildren are Tina Zinnecker Molvig (Chris) of Billings, Darin Zinnecker (Jo) of Spokane and Brook and Hillary Landers of Spokane. He has one great-grandson, Braden Molvig of Billings. His stepchildren are Sandra Gill and son, Tim of Topeka, Kan., and Jim Earle and daughter, Lexi of Dallas, Texas.
Memorial services for E.L. (Gene) Landers will be Monday, Sept. 4, 11 a.m., at St. Leo’s Catholic Church. Cremation has taken place, the Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elsie R. Peterson
Elsie R. Peterson residing at The Vista at Mission Ridge in Billings passed away on Aug. 29, 2000, at the age of 90 of myelodysplasia.
Elsie was born in Hillsdale, Kan., on July 12, 1910, the only child of David and Addie Morris. She graduated From Paola High School in 1929 and married Paul Peterson on Sept. 8, 1934. She worked for the Gas Service Company until she took time out to stay at home with her only child, Dale, born on Aug. 16, 1941.
When Dale was in high school, she returned to work with the gas company and continued to work as cashier and bookkeeper for 27 years until her retirement at the age of 65. She and Paul were longtime members of the United Methodist Church in Paola, Kan., where she was an active member. Upon moving to Billings in 1995, she and Paul attended Grace United Methodist Church.
Elsie had a lifelong interest in music and started taking piano lessons by practicing on a keyboard diagram at home and only actually playing the piano at her lesson. She loved music of all types from the piano to bands, orchestras and especially brass music. She enjoyed attending performances at the Starlight Theater in Kansas City and passed along her great love for music to her son, Dale.
Elsie loved people and socializing – especially at the bridge table. Her family and friends knew her as an excellent cook. She valued education and made the decision to keep television out of the home until her son was addicted to reading.
She is survived by her son, Dale and his wife, Judy, two granddaughters, Piper Peterson Lee and husband, Mark and Kimberly Peterson Parkash and husband, Rajiv and great-grandchildren, Hanna and Kemper Lee and Malini and Sam Parkash.
A memorial service will be held in Billings at Lillis Chapel, Mission Ridge, 3800 Rimrock Road, Billings, on Friday, Sept. 1, at 11 a.m. Another service will be held at the United Methodist Church in Paola at a later time.
Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church, 209 South Silver, Paola, KS 66071, or the Billings Symphony.

Kathryn Sethne
GLASGOW – Kathryn Sethne, 77, died Aug. 26, 2000, in Sheridan, Wyo.
Services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2, at First Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Highland cemetery. Bell Mortuary is in charge.

Clark D. ‘Corky’ Skretteberg
WORLAND, Wyo. – Clark D. “Corky” Skretteberg, 55, died on Aug. 27, 2000, at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at Mount Calvary Fellowship Church. Interment will follow at Riverview Memorial Gardens cemetery. Veile Mortuary is in charge.

Russell Glen Smith
PARADISE VALLEY – Russell Glen Smith, 72, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at his home after a long struggle with cancer.
Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home in Livingston. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31 at Holbrook United Methodist Church. Graveside committal services and interment with military honors will follow in Shorthill cemetery.

Pauline Elizabeth Stech-Potter
Pauline Elizabeth Stech-Potter, age 85 of Billings, died Aug. 22, 2000, at Big Sky Care Center in Helena.
Pauline was born on Jan. 25, 1915, in Ballantine to Austrian parents Vincent and Josephine (Stepznik) Stech. She graduated from Ballantine High School and went on to attend Beauty College in Billings. She started her own beauty shop in Laurel and then went to work for Rothrock’s Beauty Shop of Billings from 1940-1950.
In 1941, Pauline married Robert R. Potter in Bozeman. They had one son, Barry M. Potter currently of Helena. In 1950, Pauline went to work for Wilbur at the Palace Barber Shop in Billings. One of her favorite customer’s was Will Rogers. Pauline also worked from her house for many years as a beautician and full-time housewife and mother.
Pauline enjoyed square dancing with the 59ers Square Dancing Club; she also enjoyed ballroom dancing with the 49ers, bowling and she was a charter member of the Billings Motorcycle Club. She generously donated her time by volunteering for the Billings Receiving Home, March of Dimes. She served as a long-time election judge at Broadwater School in Billings. Pauline also served many years in the Ground Observer Corps tracking aircraft during the Korean Conflict.
She is survived by her husband, Robert R. Potter; son, Barry M. and wife, Diane Potter and granddaughter, LoreLei Potter, all of Helena. She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Mary. Cremation has taken place and services were held at Retz Funeral Home on Aug. 24, 2000.
Memorials are suggested to: Wakina Sky Learning Circle, c/o Helena Indian Alliance, 436 North Jackson, Helena, MT 59601.
Retz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Loyce L. Van Petten
POWELL, Wyo. – Loyce L. Van Petten, 78, died Friday at the Powell Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Monument Hill cemetery, Thermopolis. Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home is in charge.

Everett L. Watts
RIVERTON, Wyo. – Everett L. Watts, 88, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, in Riverton Memorial Hospital.
Viewing will be 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug, 30, from Ferries Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in Sheridan Municipal cemetery.

Armon R. ‘Benny’ Bender
AUGUSTA – Benny Bender, 77, of Augusta, passed away following surgery Thursday, Aug. 24, at Ft. Harrison Veterans Hospital.
He was born Aug. 14, 1923, in Laurel to Emanuel and Elizabeth Bender. As a young boy, he lived and worked with his family on several farms in the south central part of the state. He enjoyed outdoor activities and athletics, leaving school during the 10th grade to help support his family.
On Nov. 12, 1944, he fell in love for the rest of his life and married Toots Anderson of Musselshell. The couple lived in Billings where he was employed at the Northern Pacific Railroad yard in Laurel until he left to serve in the army. After WWII, Benny returned to his family and began a long and very successful career as a master carpenter.
In 1952, the couple moved to Augusta for the first time, then to Escondido, Calif., in 1966, returning to Augusta in 1979 to build their retirement home.
He was very active in community affairs and a member of the American Legion serving as Post 51 and District 8 Commander.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and, most of all, playing polka music on his accordion for anyone who would listen.
Survivors include his wife: Toots of Augusta; two sons: Jerry of Oakland, Ore., and Jim of Sumter, S.C.; a daughter; Holly Subish of Missioula; five sisters: Martha Childers of Billings, Helen Meyer of Billings, Elma Rand of Spokane, Wash., , Elsie Huth of Grandview, Wash., and Alberta Kirsch of Mott, N.D.; two brothers: Clarence of Billings and Edwin of Yakima, Wash.; five grandchildren: Sean Bender of Running Springs, Calif., Julia Webb and Joy Wiltzius of Greely, Colo., Pvt. Brandon Bender of Ft. Knox, Ky., and Elizabeth Subish of Missoula; one great-grandson, Logan Michael Bender of Running Springs.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, at the Augusta Community Church, with Pastor David Knight officiating. Burial will be in the Veterans Plot of the Augusta cemetery.
The family request that memorials be made to the Augusta Community Church or the Augusta Senior Citizens Center. Arrangements are under the direction of Hagler-Anderson Mortuary.

Emet L. Dicks
POWELL, Wyo. – Emet Lester Dicks, 74, died at his home east of Powell, Wyo., August 26, 2000, of an apparent heart attack. He was born June 10, 1926, at Sand Springs, Okl., to Jesse Franklin Dicks and Avis Wilson Murphy Dicks. He spent the years of his youth in small towns near Tulsa, graduating from high school in Kellyville, Okla., in 1944. Immediately upon graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific until the end of World War II.
In 1946, upon being released from the Navy, he came to Powell, Wyo., to join his family who had relocated there, and began his career in the nearby oil fields working for Stanolin Oil Co. On his 23rd birthday, June 10, 1949, he married Pearl Clarene Webb in Powell. In 1948, he joined with his father, Jesse, to form Dicks Well Service, an oilfield service company which flourished and expanded to include his brother-in-law, Bill Lynn. He remained active in the family business until retirement in 1994, selling his interest to son, Dee.
Never one to sit idle, Emet always maintained an active life outside his work, snowmobiling; fattening beef cattle; planting his garden; and raising, training, showing and riding Fox Trotter horses. He loved to hunt and fish in the mountains near his beloved Wyoming home and shared his time and passion for the outdoors with his children and grandchildren. He was one of the founders of the Big Horn Basin Fox Trotter Association and helped organize the first Fox Trotter Show and Sale, eventually serving in every office capacity of that organization. He was one of the original founders of the American National Bank of Powell in 1963, serving on the board of directors until the bank was merged with Key Bank in the 1990s
He is survived by the mother of his children, Pearl Dicks of Powell; daughter, Cindy Wheelwright and husband, Val of North Ogden, Utah; sons, Dee and wife, Vicki (Faxon), Hal and wife, Barbara (Guthrie), all of Powell, and Ken of Basin, Wyo.; sisters, Joyce Lynn and husband, Bill, Joann Bentz and husband, Norman, all of Powell; sister-in-law, Peggy (Knapp) Dicks of Glen Allen, Alaska; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and friends near and far, including his faithful golden Labrador, Jim. He was preceded in death by his mother, his father and brother, Alan.
Visitation for family and friends will be Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 31, at the LDS church in Powell, Wyo., Bishop Gib Condie presiding, with burial to follow at Crown Hill cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Derek Dicks, Shad Tanner, Damian Dicks, Joel Tanner, Dustin Dicks, and grandson-in-law, Alan Clark. Honorary pallbearers will be brothers-in-law, Bill Lynn, and Norman Bentz; and best friend, Denis Brothers. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorials to the charity of choice.

Clifford Warren Elliott
MISSOULA – Clifford Warren Elliott, 85, of Missoula, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 31, at Riverside Nursing home from complications of a traffic accident on Aug. 9.
He was born Feb. 18, 1915, in Rover, Mo., to Ethell and Walter Elliott. In 1937, he came to Montana where he worked on various ranches in the Big Timber area. He fell in love with Bertha Plaggemeyer, the ranch cook. They were married in Big Timber and would have celebrated their 60th anniversary on Sept. 26, 2000.
In 1950, they moved to Harlowton where he worked at a service station and later owned and operated his own service station. They moved to Big Timber in 1960 where they owned and operated a motel and service station.
In 1977, they retired to Missoula. They attended Christian Life Center and were active in the Golden Heirs group. He cared for Bertha after she suffered a stroke in 1995 and was confined to a wheelchair. In 1982, Clifford began his second career as a Missoulian carrier He loved getting up early and made so many friends over the years. He was delivering papers when he was injured in a traffic accident.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Margaret Morris, Nina Moore, Mami Douglas; a brother, Gerald Elliott.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha, Missoula; four daughters, Wanda Hathaway and husband, David, Big Timber, Eva Palmer and husband, Merle, Missoula, Yvonne Hritsco and husband, Dan, Missoula, Kathy Fenwick and husband, Scott, Avondale, Colo.; five sons, Gary Elliott and wife, Kim, Clinton, Randy Elliott and wife, Angie, Turah, Mike Elliott and wife, Myoung, Renton, Wash., Steve Elliott, Deer Lodge, David Elliott, Plains; 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. We will all miss your radiant smile, your quick wit and your great sense of humor.
Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Thursday at Christian Life Center.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Christian Life Center with Rev. Harry Ayers and Rev. David Tonn officiating. Burial and graveside services will be at Big Timber cemetery at 2 p.m. on Friday with Tim Hathaway officiating.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Philip Hathaway, Kraig Hathaway, Marc Hathaway, Jason Palmer, Brandon Palmer, Kevin Hritsco, Charles Hathaway, Brian Hritsco, Christopher Elliott, Isaac Elliott, Cole Elliott.
The family suggest memorials be sent to the Golden Heirs Group, Christian Life Center, 3801 So. Russell, Missoula, MT 59801. Arrangements are under the care of Garden City Funeral Home.
