Aubrey Merle Darnielle
“Wow!..” What a life. Aubrey Merle Darnielle, “Aub, ” was born April 21, 1926, in Inglewood, Calif. He passed away at home on Aug. 24, 2000, after an eight year struggle with cancer. He grew up in Idaho on the Payette River, in the family’s general store located at Gardena, and attended schools in Jerusalem and Emmett, Idaho.
He proudly served in WWII with the 157th Liaison Squadron in the South Pacific. He was on a B-17 bomber crew, as his love of airplanes and flying were very strong. He met his bride of 53 years, Lois Marie Brown, on a blind date and they were married three months later. They spent the first ten years of their marriage “in retirement” (i.e. without kids) fishing, hunting and hiking the mountains of Idaho. They relocated to Billings in 1955. They have four children: Teresa Lynn, Deanna Marie, David Edward (wife, Barbara) and Carol Lee.
Aubrey’s professional career in the insurance industry spanned almost 50 years. Darnielle Insurance Agency was founded in 1986. His civic and professional involvement and accomplishments are many: past president of Foothill Toastmasters Club, Downtown Exchange Club of Billings, Billings Board of Insurers, Independent Insurance Agents of Montana. He was the first national recipient of Safeco Insurance Company’s Commercial Council Award In 1973; Chairman of the Year Award presented by the American Association of Managing General Agents; Lobbyist, Montana State Legislature. He approached his personal life with the same zeal, organizing the Billings Flying Mustangs, the Rainmakers Motorcycle Club (lifetime member), and the Montana Vintage Motorcycle Club. He was on the board for the Big Sky International Air Show for many years, and the list could go on and on.
Aub was always looking for that rusted out skeleton of a motor scooter sitting in some old barn. With an artistic flair, and a big wrench, he could turn that “basket case” into a show piece. He participated avidly in many motorcycle and car exhibitions, riding in parades, and found his greatest passion being surrounded by friends and family, motorcycles and memorabilia. He loved to work in his yard, took incredible pride in his home, enjoyed bowling for many years, Saturday coffee with the guys, and could play the (wood) saw.
Aubrey is survived by his wife, Lois; his four children; and his five grandchildren, Jesse Larson, Devin Darnielle, Robby and Eddie Carson, and Kenneth Kniefel; his sister, Ava Lee Lutteman (Otto) of Middleton, Idaho, and several aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edna and Arley Darnielle.
If you are attending the funeral, two wheels or four vintage wheels are encouraged.
Memorials way be made to the Rocky Mountain Cancer Center, the American Cancer Society, or Big Sky Hospice.
