Drage Damjanovich
Drage Damjanovich, 88, of Billings, passed away Monday morning, Aug. 21, 2000, at Valley Health Care Center. She was born March 3, 1912, in Monarch, Wyo., the daughter of Marko and Kristina (Tur-cinovich) Vu-jovich.
Drage was raised and educated in Bearcreek, and married Blazo Damjanovich on Nov. 17, 1929, in Gebo, Wyo. They moved to Billings in 1939, where their 12 children were raised.
Drage loved life, her children, and the color green. Among her many hobbies, she enjoyed baking, crocheting, and visiting with her family. As a young girl, she was a member of the Circle of Serbian Sisters. Her presence will be missed dearly, but her amazing spirit will always be with us. She was preceded in death by her husband and two children, Helen Klundt and Drago Damjanovich.
Those left to honor her memory include her 10 surviving children, Pete (Alice) Damjanovich of Ballantine; Vidak Damjanovich of Laurel; Vide (Nick) Mirich of Cheyenne, Wyo.; Christina Damjanovich of Billings; Mileva (Cloyd) Hudson of Musselshell; Daisy (Ben) Carlson, Anje Openshaw and Milt (Carole) Damjanovich, all of Billings; Stella (Deryl) Openshaw of Shepherd; and Rich (Bonnie) Damjanovich of Belgrade; 38 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.
A Prayer Service will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist with interment to follow in Mountview cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the charity of one’s choice.

Ilene B. Dover
CODY, Wyo. – Ilene B. Dover, 84, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at the West Park Long Term Care Center.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Wyoming Avenue Chapel. Interment will follow in Riverside cemetery.

Clifford M. Larson
SIDNEY – Funeral services for Clifford M. Larson, 90, of Sidney, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at the Pella Lutheran Church, with Pastors Mark and Maryann Morgenstern officiating. Interment will be in the Sidney cemetery under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Clifford M. “Cliff” Larson was born on Feb. 25, 1910, to parents Oscar and Annie (Johnson) Larson in Kerkovan, Minn. In 1915, the family moved to Stanley, N.D. Clifford attended Wahpeton State School of Science and was offered an instructor’s position but chose to move to Sidney, in 1936, where he was employed by Yoder-Kincaid Motor Co.
Clifford was united in marriage to Eva Gregory from Fairview, Mont., Nov. 17, 1938, in Sidney. Eva died Aug. 20, 1963, in Sidney. Clifford continued working the family farm until 1960, when he purchased Yoder Motor Company in Sidney. He took pride in serving his customers and providing an excellent workplace. He sold to his partners in 1977.
Clifford was united in marriage to Maxine Trotter Nutter Feb. 4, 1965, in Sidney. They enjoyed entertaining friends and family in their villa in Mesa, Ariz. Maxine died Sept. 4, 1998, in Sidney.
Clifford was a member of the Lions Club for 50-plus years and a member of the Masonic Lodge and was instrumental in the remodeling of the Masonic Lodge. Clifford was an active supporter of Boy Scout Troop No. 141. He helped build and manage the Boy Scout concession stand at the swimming pool and the fairgrounds. He enjoyed selling Boy Scout Christmas trees and Kiwanis apples. He proudly displayed the Golden Apple Award he received for his sales.
Cliff died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at the Sidney Health Center Extended Care Facility.
Cliff is survived by a son, Wayne (Terry) Larson, of Arvada, Colo.; stepson, John (Rene) Nutter of Boise, Idaho; daughter, Peggy (Randy) Reichert of Billings; granddaughter, Tiffany Hill; great-granddaughter, Kara Simmons of Wheat Ridge, Colo.; grandson, Bryant (Deborah) Roberts and great-grandson, Seth Roberts of South St. Paul, Minn.; and a sister, Marion Furlong of Sun City, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his wives, Eva and Maxine; parents; brothers, Wilton Larson of Sidney, Willard Larson of Mesa, Ariz., and a sister, Agnes Jellesed.
Memorials may be made to the Sidney Health Center Extended Care.

Vernon Uno Koski
ROBERTS – Vernon Uno Koski, 93, of Roberts passed away Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at St. John’s Lutheran Home in Billings where he has resided for three years.
He was born March 14, 1907, at Roberts, a son of Matt and Alma Koski. He attended a country school near Roberts. Uno married Fannie Rintala Oct. 27, 1928, in Red Lodge, and they ranched in the Roberts area. They went to New York in 1937 and returned to the Red Lodge area in 1942. He was a miner until the Smith Mine disaster and went back to ranching in the Fox area.
Uno liked wood working, golf, crossword puzzles, reading and baseball. He was a member of Knights of Kaleva and Elks. He was Elk of the Year in 1985.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Fannie and a brother, Tenho Koski.
Survivors include a son, Carl (Mary Ann) Koski of Laurel; two daughters, Helen (Bud) Brickman of Billings, Harriet (Martin) Mikkola of Laurel; one brother, W.J. Koski of Billings; one sister, Martha Sippola of Red Lodge; 10 grandchildren; 18 great- grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Olcott Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge. Memorials: St. John’s Lutheran Home or Knights of Kaleva, P.O. Box 857, Red Lodge, MT 59068

Heinie Mockel
BOZEMAN – Heinie Mockel, well-known resident of Bozeman, passed away on Aug. 22, 2000, in Bozeman at age 96. Heinie was noted for his great love of family, friends, children, and golf.
Heinie was born Jan. 23, 1904, on the Mockel ranch in Crow Creek Valley, near Townsend, to Elisa and Phillip Mockel. He attended Crow Creek School and graduated from Whitehall High School.
In 1927, he married Donna Dunbar who preceded him in death in 1930. Heinie worked with his family on the Mockel ranch until 1935 when he moved to Bozeman. During the years from 1930 until 1949, he played in dance bands, forming his own band in 1938. He loved all kinds of music, especially Big Band-era music.
Heinie married Barbara B. Soule in Lewistown on June 16, 1940. Barbara and Heinie celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year with their family.
Heinie and Ray Hartman formed Hartman-Mockel Men’s Clothing Store in Bozeman in 1960. He retired in 1972. After his retirement he continued to pursue his love of golf, playing regularly until age 95.
He is survived by daughters Marcia Cox, of Dallas, and Linda (Larry) Hughes of Inverness, Ill. Heinie and Barbara’s grandchildren include Scott, Christopher and Kim Cox of Dallas, and Jeff (Jen) Hughes of Algonquin, Ill., and Nancy Hughes-Sneddon (Scott) of Billings. They also have one great-grandaughter, Lindsey, daughter of Christopher Cox.
Heinie’s sole surviving brother, Cliff (Jessie) Mockel lives in McMinnville, Ore. Two other brothers, Walter and Albert, preceded him in death. Bozeman area relatives include Marilyn Mockel, his niece, and grandniece Peggy (Bill) Ryan and their children, Wade, Kyla and Caitlin.
He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Al Bedoo Shrine Temple, Masonic Lodge No. 18 AF&AM and Omega Beta fraternity.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Hope Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Sunset Hills cemetery.

Irene Schierkolk
POWELL, Wyo. – Irene Schierkolk, 77, died on July 24, 2000.
Memorial graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug 26, at Crown Hill cemetery. Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home is in charge.

Scott Schumacher
POST FALLS, Idaho – Scott Aaron “Scotty” Schumacher, 38, formerly of Miles City, Mont., died on Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at the home of his mother.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Aug. 25. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Calvary cemetery.

Alice Naomi Trautmann
Alice Naomi Trautmann, 82, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at St. Vincent Hospital surrounded by her family.
Alice was born Dec. 1, 1917, to Herbert and Ida Barnard. In 1949, she married Emil P. Trautmann who preceded her in death.
Alice enjoyed working crossword puzzles, her plants and being with family. She was hardworking and always eager to help her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Alice will be missed by those whose lives she blessed.
She is survived by two sons: Gary Steinmetz and Ronald (Connie) Trautmann. Three close grandchildren: Stacey Yoder, Christopher Trautmann and Daniel Trautmann. She also has other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Smith Downtown Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Gary Ray Winkler
GREYBULL, Wyo. – Gary Ray Winkler, 65, died on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at the New Horizon Care Center in Lovell.
Visitations will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 24, at the Atwood Family Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 25, in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Basin/Greybull Ward. Interment will follow the church service at the Hillside cemetery in Greybull.

William D. ‘Bill’ Alexander
CULBERTSON – William D. “Bill” Alexander, 90, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at Roosevelt Memorial Nursing Home in Culbertson.
Bill was born in Grand Meadow, Minn., on June 10, 1910, the son of William and Mary Alexander. In 1912, he moved with his family to Culbertson, and a few years later onto a homestead near Mona where he spent his childhood, graduating in 1928 from Lambert High School.
He worked at the Fort Peck Dam Project and operated a farm south of Culbertson. He was a self-taught musician, playing the banjo in several bands south of the river during the ’30s and early ’40s.
Bill married Norma Hawkins on Oct. 18, 1943, in Sidney, and in 1944 moved with her to a farm 10 miles east of Culbertson where they lived until Norma’s death in 1995.
He enjoyed playing the banjo in senior citizen bands, and doing carpentry.
On Feb. 13, 2000, he married Emma Hansen in the nursing home. She preceded him in death.
He also was preceded in death by two daughters, Rosemary and Ginny.
Survivors include a son, Dwight Alexander of Escondido, Calif.; a daughter, Ruth McLaughlin of Great Falls; and two granddaughters.
Visitations will be held on Friday, Aug. 25, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Everson-Clayton Memorial Chapel in Culbertson. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Methodist Church in Culbertson with Rev. Tim Hutslar officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside cemetery in Culbertson. Everson-Clayton Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline Bickel
Pauline Bickel, 77, of Billings, formerly of Miles City, passed away Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, in St. Vincent Hospital.
She was born Jan. 7, 1923, in Ismay, a daughter of Floyd H. and Odette Finch Walden. She grew up on the family home, moving in 1930 to Miles City where she received her education.
Pauline married William Fred Bickel on Feb. 8, 1948, and the couple made their home in Miles City. She worked for the Miles City Saddlery and as a waitress at Woolworth’s for many years.
She loved making crafts all of her life. Pauline was given an award by the U.S. Marines Corps for the crafts she provided to the “Toys for Tots” program. She was very supportive of her husband, who was a retired World War II Marine, who received two purple hearts. She was also very proud of her son, Gerald, who served in Vietnam with the U.S. Army, receiving three purple hearts. After 20 years in Miles City, the couple moved to Billings where they worked until their retirement. Mr. Bickel died in 1995.
Pauline was a wonderful mother, sister, and friend. She will be missed by all.
She was preceded in death by a son, Gerald; and four brothers, Homer, Lynn, J. Lee and George L. Walden.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Marguerite Bickel; one grandson, William Bickel II; three step-grandchildren, Michael (Lori) and Andrew Loomis, all of Miles City, and Claire (John) Voth of Stevensville; two brothers, Calvin L. (Mabel) Walden of Miles City and Floyd “Duke” L. (Joan) Walden; and one special sister, Irene W. Messer of Washington.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, in the Bullis-Graves Memorial Chapel with Rev. James Mavis officiating. Interment will follow at the Custer County cemetery. Bullis-Graves Memorial Chapel of Miles City has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Marguerite Spencer Brown
Marguerite Spencer Brown died on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, in Billings, following a long illness. She was born in Shelley, Idaho, on July 19, 1923, to Rev. Richard Ayres Spencer and Susan Mildred Young Spencer. In 1925, the family moved to Nampa, where Marguerite graduated from high school. In 1946, she graduated from Northwest Nazarene College, cum laude, with majors in philosophy and English.
From 1944-51 she was a reporter and city editor of the Idaho Free Press in Nampa; during that time she received the national Pall Mall award for Distinguished Service in Journalism. Her story, the solution to a murder which had puzzled local authorities, was featured in national radio and television broadcasts in 1952.
In 1946, she married Harold W. Brown, and in 1952 she moved with him to Seattle where he completed medical school. While living there, Marguerite served as administrative secretary to the dean of the Graduate School at the University of Washington. From 1956-57, she was administrative secretary to the associate dean at New York University College of Medicine, while her husband completed his residency, and upon their return to Washington was the administrative secretary to the Department of Medicine at the University of Washington Medical School.
She returned to Nampa in 1961 and served on the Nampa Public Library Board from 1961-73, including two terms as chair; she was a member of the Idaho State Library Advisory Board from 1972-74, and chair of the Nampa Citizens for Public Schools from 1968-69. She was a member of the committee to organize the College of Idaho (now Albertson College) annual Women’s Symposium, which later was renamed the College of Idaho Spring Symposium. She was a member of the Idaho Commission on Women’s Programs 1971-74.
In 1975, Marguerite was the first woman elected to the Nampa City Council and served until 1983, including two terms as president of the council. She was a member of the Idaho State Bar Professional Conduct Board from 1976-87 and was selected as the Idaho Statesman’s Distinguished Citizen on April 2, 1978.
The College of Idaho appointed Marguerite to its Board of Trustees in 1981, and she served as a member of the executive committee of the Board from 1982-89. She wrote a weekly column for the Idaho Press-Tribune from 1983-89. In 1989, she was invited to join the Nampa Rotary Club and was among its first women members.
Marguerite was a member of Chapter N, PEO in Nampa, and a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Nampa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Susan Mildred Spencer; by her husband, Harold Wendell Brown; by a brother, Paul Spencer; and by three sisters, Katherine West, Virginia Smith, and Mildred Kadie. She is survived by two sisters, Betty Jean Ehlers of Pendleton, Ore., and Lillie Moore of Portland, Ore.; by her daughter and son-in-law, Victoria and John Cech of Billings, and her grandson, Isaiah Shelburne-Polillo Cech.
She was a lady and a scholar.
Funeral services for Marguerite will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, in Nampa on Friday, Aug. 25, at 1 p.m. Alsip’s Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements and a viewing. Those wishing to send a memorial are asked to contribute to the Harold and Marguerite Brown Memorial Scholarship at Exeter College, Oxford University. Memorials may be sent to Americans for Oxford, 198 Madison Avenue, 13th Floor, New York, NY 10016, with a note specifying that the memorial go to Exeter College for the Harold and Marguerite Brown Scholarship fund.
