Tim Hutslar will officiate at the service at the Medicine Lake High School Auditorium; interment will be in Medicine Lake cemetery. Bob, 73, died early Saturday morning, August 12, at Billings Deaconess Medical Center, following a brief illness.
Bob and his twin brother, Dick, were born June 18, 1927, at the Medicine Lake, Mont., home of their parents, Frank and Susan (Fry) French. They grew up in Medicine Lake, graduated from Medicine Lake High School, farmed together, and were inseparable until Dick’s death in 1982. Bob attended Montana State College in Bozeman for a short time, then returned to Medicine Lake to operate the family farm. He married Patricia Ryerson at Froid, Mont., on Sept. 11, 1949. They have made their home in Medicine Lake since.
Bob liked to be seen as a curmudgeon, and cultivated the role of a “grumpy old man, ” but everyone, especially his grandchildren, saw through that surface to a loving, caring man who was dedicated to his family and his community. He loved to give everyone (especially his family!) orders, and usually took full credit for their accomplishments! He served on the boards of many organizations, was a charter member of the Medicine Lake Fire Department, and belonged to the Plentywood Masonic Lodge and related masonic orders, the Moose and Elks lodges, and for many years was a stockholder and director of Culbertson State Bank, and until his death, of Montana State Bank in Plentywood. He took great pride in having served as Mayor of Medicine Lake (he often said, the biggest and best “little” town in Montana!) for 32 years, and was very instrumental in initiating the city swimming pool and street paving projects. Widely respected as a superb cook, he was never happier than when presiding over a banquet or barbecue for several hundred people.
Bob is survived by Pat, his wife of 51 years; two sons, Neal and his wife, Gayla, and Dean, all of Medicine Lake; and a daughter, Julie and her husband, Ralph Annicchiarico of Rapid City, S.D.; and by five grandchildren, Shawneal, Brandon, Carly, Shane, and Shawn French.
