Lucille E. Restad
The world lost one of it’s brightest stars on Aug. 13, 2000. Lucille E. Restad, 87, of Billings, passed away at Deaconess Hospital of an extended illness. She was born on Feb. 9, 1913, in St. Cloud, Minn., the daughter of Edith and John Richter.
Lucille was our mother, our grandma and our friend. The happiness and joy she brought to our hearts will be cherished forever. Throughout the 87 years of her lifetime there are many memories to be treasured. For 34 years, Lucille enjoyed being an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, where she was past president. Needle point, painting and ceramics were also favorite pastimes, but nothing compared to the special times she spent with her family and friends.
On August 9, 1941, Lucille married Felix Restad and just recently celebrated their 59th anniversary. Lucille lead a life filled with love and comfort as she watched her sons and granddaughters grow up over the years. Her memory will always live on in our hearts.
Lucille is survived by her husband, Felix Restad; sisters, Helen Bender of Billings, Millie Degree of Circle Pines, Minn., Jean Kappel of St. Cloud, Minn.; and her brother, Ray Richter of Bethel, Minn.; son, Jim Restad and son, Bruce and wife, Pat Restad; daughters-in-law, Judy Restad and Noreen Restad; grandchildren, Desiree Harris and her husband, Billy Harris, Melissa Restad, Felicia Restad, Lyndee Restad and Misti Restad; great-grandson, Dylan Harris and many friends.
Lucille is preceded in death by her mother and father, her sister, Venette Caldwell; and her first son, Edward Restad.
Funeral service will be Thursday at Dahl Funeral Chapel at 3 p.m. Inurnment in Holy Cross Columbium.

Walter H. Rogers
Walter H. Rogers, 67, of Billings, went to our Lord Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital after a long illness. He was born Sept. 10, 1932, in Bascom, Fla., a son of John Wesley and Maude Ellen Oswald Rogers. Hiram had served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1955. He attended schools in Bascom and moved to Great Falls in 1957 and attended the College of Great Falls, majoring in music. He married Lorri Aipperspach in 1962 in Billings and they were traveling entertainers-musicians for 31 years. The last few years they were musically involved in the Emmanuel Baptist Church. Hiram sang and played the fiddle, drums and mandolin.
Survivors include his wife, Lorri; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Penny and Floyd Randall; three daughters, Debbie (Charles) Greenwalt of Overgaard, Ariz., Melody (Darnell) Jungels of Miles City, and Lorri Lee Rogers of Billings; one son, Karl (Debra) Rogers of Billings; five grandsons; four brothers; and one sister. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter and two grandchildren.
Memorial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 328 S. Shiloh Road, Billings, MT 59106. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Music Ministry of the Church. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Robert Earl Sanford
CODY, Wyo. – Robert Earl Sanford, 76, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000.
Cremation has taken place and memorial graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Crown Hill cemetery in Powell, Wyo.

Ralph ‘Whitey’ Steffan
SIDNEY – Mass of Christian Burial for Ralph “Whitey” Steffan, 65, of Sidney, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Sidney, with Father Ned Shinnick presiding. Interment will be in the Sidney cemetery under the direction of the Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Ralph A. “Whitey” Steffan was born April 13, 1935, to parents Fred and Pauline (Reiber) Steffan in Bayard, Neb. After his father died, his mother remarried Phillip Schmitt and the family moved to Sidney. They farmed north of Sidney. Whitey attended the Hardy School and later graduated from Sidney High School with the class of 1954. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth (Betty) Anne Steinbeisser on June 2, 1954. Together they had eight children with seven surviving. They farmed with his father-in--law, Joseph A. Steinbeisser, east of Sidney; sugar beets, beef and feeder lambs were mainstays at the operation.
Whitey loved to visit with people. Fishing, barbeques and gatherings of family and friends were cherished limes. After becoming semi-retired from farming, he bought a boat and thoroughly enjoyed fishing “out on the water”.
Whitey died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000.
Whitey is survived by his wife, Betty of Sidney; sons, Mark (Cheryl) Steffan of Sidney and Michael (Nancy) Steffan of Sidney; daughters, Linette Fritz, Natalie (Torben) Eristrup, and Teresa (Randy) Larson, all of Sidney, Marcia Steffan of Snowman Resort, Colo., Peggy (Ron) Finnicum, of Post Falls, Idaho; brothers, Albert Steffan of Post Falls, and Leonard Steffan of Perrysburg, Ohio; sisters, Elnora Zadow and Florene Carpenter, both of Sidney; grandchildren, Karen, Catherine, and James Arnold, Alisha Steffan, Stacy (Mike) Mangold, Jenni and Jeff Steffan, Jermiah, Jamie, Gussie and Knute Larson and Arthur Finnicum.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Deborah, brother, Leroy Steffan; sister, Fredericka (Ricky) Schaaf.

Mary Pitet Tennell
SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Mary Pitet Tennell, 57, died at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County on Aug. 12, 2000, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
A Vigil service will be held on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Kane Funeral Home. The Funeral Liturgy will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery.

Casper Wick
SIDNEY – Casper Wick, 87, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at the Sidney Health Center.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at the Zion Lutheran Church of Fairview, Mont. Interment will be in the St. Peter’s Lutheran cemetery. Fulkerson Funeral Home is in charge.

Donald Edward Williams
BUFFALO, Wyo. – Don Don Williams, 21, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, in an auto accident.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday from the LDS Church. Visitation will be held from the Adams Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m. Interment will be in Willow Grove cemetery.

Anna (Rettinger) Wuertz
RICHEY – Anna (Rettinger) Wuertz, 91, of Richey, passed away Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at the Sidney Health Center Extended Care Facility in Sidney, Mont.
Graveside services will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000 at the Richey cemetery in Richey, with Pastors Carter and Myrna Havner and Pastor Susan Twidwell officiating. Interment will be in the Richey cemetery. Silvenale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.
Anna was born on May 15, 1909 in Glendive, Mont., the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Baumkirsch) Rettinger. On Oct. 23, 1918, both of Anna’s parents died during the flu epidemic. In July of 1920, Anna and her sister Barbara went to live with August and Barbara Ritz. On Dec. 10, 1928, Anna married Herman “Casey” Wuertz in Glendive. Two daughters were born to this union, A. Joyce Wuertz of Billings and Betty Walker of Richey.
Survivors include her two daughters, three grandchildren, Bob C. Walker and his wife Sandy of Richey, Linda Stundald and her husband Don of Marion, Ariz. and Peggy Burman and her husband Clint of Buffalo, Wyo.; seven great grandchildren, Marty Campbell and her husband Jim, Kylee Walker and Wyn Walker; Tatum(Glen) Parnel, Tiffany Stundahl, Tessa Burman and Terra Burman; one great great granddaughter, Kaycee Ann Campbell; one sister, Margaret Chrest of Glendive and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and one sister, Barbara Babb; her son-in-law, Robert Walker and a great great grandson, Casey James.

Arthur G. Ackerman
GLENDIVE – Arthur G. Ackerman, 78, passed away on Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, in Glendive.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, in the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home. Pastor James Hageman will be officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in the Dawson County cemetery in Glendive. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.

Patricia “Pat” Child
HELENA –Mass of the Christian Burial for Patricia “Pat” Child, of Helena formerly of Sidney, Mont., will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Sidney with Father Ned Shinnick as presider. Wake services will be held at 6 p.m., Monday, Aug. 14, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Sidney. Interment will be on Friday afternoon, August 18, in Forrestvale cemetery in Helena, Mont. under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Patricia Clare Casey Child was born in Havre, Mont. on Aug. 31, 1935, the 1st of 12 children to parents Francis and Loretta Casey. The family moved to East Helena where Pat was raised and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1953 and Carroll College in 1957.
Patricia taught English for seven years in Custer, Kremlin, and Townsend, Mont. In 1963, she married Harry W. Child II, and they made their home in Sidney, where they were blessed with three beautiful children. In 1998 they moved to Great Falls and just completed a move to Helena, to start a much anticipated retirement together.
Pat’s first love was her family and her faith. Her interests included sewing, crafts, gardening, gourmet cooking, and entertaining people. Nothing made her happier than a house full of family and friends and a table full of her fantastic food. She loved beautiful things and her creativity was expressed in colorful flowers and her gardens. No one enjoyed shopping more than Pat and no one could find a better bargain.
Pat was a member of Chapter BA P.E.O.., Beta Sigma Phi, had served as a board member on the State Mental Health Board, and had spent countless hours volunteering for numerous organizations. She will be remembered for her loving heart, her ability to help others, and her constant desire to improve everyone’s life.
Pat is survived by her husband, Harry; daughters, Lynette (Larry) Herman of Sidney; Libby (Marty) Shaide of Fairview; son, Lance (Noelle) Child of Big Sky; grandchildren, Josh and Meghan Herman, Jonathan and Mitchell Shaide, and Harry W. Child, III; sisters, Sister Lynn Casey, Sister Jean Casey, Jerry Maddio, Colleen Stroup, Mary Brown, Kathy Zoanni, and brothers, Dennis, Michael, Jim, and Tom Casey. Pat was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Loretta Casey, and a sister, baby Mary.
Pat began her journey home on August 11, 2000, following complications from a stroke. We have lost one of God’s most beautiful children who gave her entire life to the needs of others and now can rest amongst her cherished angels.

Bertha Mae Denniston
Bertha Mae Denniston, 80 of Billings, passed away Saturday afternoon, Aug. 12, 2000. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist.

E. Mae Morgan
ABSAROKEE – On Aug. 10, 2000, Mae left us to embrace our loving God, while surrounded by her family.
Mae and her twin sister were born Jan. 15, 1935, in Fishtail, Mont. to Warren and Marguerite Rathbun. She was raised and educated in Fishtail and graduated from Absarokee High School. She went on to the then Billings Polytechnic College. After her retirement in 1997 from Stuart’s House of Vacuums, she moved back to Absarokee to be able to watch her granddaughters play sports. Watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren grow was the greatest joy in her life.
Mae was preceded in death by her parents, twin sister, Fae Pratt and sister Ellen Marsh.
Mae is survived by her brother, Ernie (Merle) Rathbun of Absarokee; sons, Robert Morgan of Absarokee, Rodney Morgan of Wasilla, Ala., and his children, Danielle (Sis), Zachary (Bocephus) and Dominique (Scooter) and Debbie and Kenny Nash and Tanni of Eldon, Miss.; daughter, Jackie and Allan Speck of Absarokee and their children, Corrina (Reenie), Savannah (Nana), Theresa (Teasers) Speck and her children Isaiah (Bubba) and Elizebeth (Lizard).
God’s great gift to you is this moment now. Use it to create and to live the grandest version of the greatest vision ever you had about yourself. And rather then feel ongoing sorrow Maes’s departure look to see, and choose to experience always the gift which she brought to you, and the wonder of its continuing presence in your life forever. For her gift will be present in you, every time you give love unconditionally to another. You will do so in her name and in yours. For you are one.
As with Mae’s wishes cremation has taken place and a Celebration of her life will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the Grave Fellowship Church in Absarokee. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Big Sky Hospice, Stillwater Team; Absarokee Swimming Pool; Beartooth Manor in Columbus; or Absarokee Ambulance Service. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Kathleen ‘Kathy’ Schell
Kathy Schell, 61, of Billings, died on Aug. 10, 2000. She was born Aug. 16, 1938, the daughter of Forest and Ruth (Hedges) Roby. As a youth, Kathy lived in various Western states. She graduated from Ekalaka High School in 1956. Kathy was united in marriage to Cliff Schell in the late summer of 1958, in Fort Worth, Texas.
She is survived by her husband, Cliff; daughters, Tenley Strong, Tammy (Jeff) Muri, Tara (Kevin) Mahoney; son, Roche (Kathy) Schell; and seven grandchildren, Lauren, Lexi, Cameron, Callie, Jase, Danielle, and Hannah, all of Billings.
She is preceded in death by both of her parents; and two brothers, Paul and Judd Roby.
Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday Aug. 15, at Faith Chapel on Broadwater and Shiloh. Reception to follow.
With her eyes on Jesus she finished the race marked out for her with perseverance and courage.
My Love and Very Best Friend, I will miss you.”

Joan Logan Turnquist
Joan Logan Turnquist, 70, passed away on Aug. 10, 2000, at St. Vincent Hospital after many years of courageously battling rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and ultimately a short battle with lung cancer.
A Billings native, Joan was born on Oct. 18, 1929, to loving parents Marjorie Powell Logan and Dick Logan. She graduated from Billings Senior High School at the age of 16. Then, she attended one year at Montana State College before marrying her best friend, Harold W. Turnquist on Aug. 12, 1947. Joan lived her life with spunk, spirit, a sense of humor, and a devotion to her family that was equaled by few. A loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, spent her entire life nurturing her family and extended family members.
After her marriage, Joan worked at various jobs including the NILE, and the American Murray Grey Association where she retired 10 years ago. Joan most enjoyed being actively involved in her children’s and grandchildren’s activities from scouts to music to school to sports and beyond. She was extremely proud of her Billings roots. Her generous spirit and caring attitude made her a surrogate mother and grandmother to many.
Joan is survived by three sons and their families, Bill and Valerie (Heather and Jon Frampton) of Spokane, Wash., Bob and Linda ( Scott and Emily), and Ken and Sally (Jennifer, Ashley, and Michela) of Belgrade; and one daughter, Pam Turnquist Birkeland (Kade, Brant, and Kiele) of Helena; and son-in-law Mike Birkeland of Fort Benton. Also surviving are three sisters, Marj Rolle (Ken), Harriet Schindele, and Joyce Curtis; and one sister-and-law, Maxine Evangelisti (Amy and Frank).
Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Harold W. Turnquist; her parents, Marjorie and Dick; her parents-in-law, William and Amy; a brother, Dickie and a great-grandson, William Lee Turnquist-Lynn.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 14, at the First Congregational Church. Interment will follow at Mountview cemetery. Visitation may be made at Smith Downtown Chapel from 12-8 p.m. Sunday, August 13. The casket will be closed at the church. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the American Arthritis Foundation, or to the charity of one’s choice.

Patricia ‘Pat’ Child
HELENA – Patricia “Pat” Child, formerly of Sidney, died Friday, August 11, 2000, at Med Center One in Bismarck, N.D., from complications of a stroke.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Sidney. Wake services will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church. Interment will be held in the afternoon on Friday, Aug. 18, in Forrestvale cemetery in Helena. Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney is in charge.

Darrel Emmett
GLENDIVE – Darrel Emmett, 66, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at his home surrounded by his family.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August, 14, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Dawson County cemetery. Silvernale-Silha Fun-eral Home is in charge.
