Arthur T. Fitzpatrick, Sr.
CROW AGENCY – Arthur T. Fitzpatrick Sr., (Baby Art) 57, of Crow Agency passed away Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, in the Crow Agency IHS Hospital.
“Biisheh Ux-baliah” (Medi-cine Buffalo) was born June 8, 1943, in Crow Agency, a son of Elizabeth Fitzpatrick and Theodore Bear Cloud. He received his education at the Flandreau Indian High School in South Dakota, where he excelled in basketball and other sports. He worked at various jobs throughout the area, but was most recently a custodian at Little Big Horn College, where he worked until his medical retirement. He had many friends and enjoyed visiting with them.
Art was a member of the St. Dennis Catholic Church, Night Hawk Drum group, Night Hawk Society, Tobacco Society, Whistling Water Clan and a child of the Greasy Mouth Clan. He was also a member of the Crow/Shoshoni Sundance Society and sponsored a dance in Crow Agency. He traveled with the drum group across the country and to Germany. He was well known for his singing voice, sense of humor and being the life of the party. His hobbies were singing and traveling with the drum group, often riding to pow-wows just to sing. When at home, he like to work with leather.
In 1995, he was elected as the Crow Fair racing commissioner. He successfully ran the Crow Fair racing section for that year. He owned race horses before his retirement and later enjoyed attending horse races at the Billings fairgrounds.
Art married Clevia Jones and was later divorced. He married Lucille Brien and was later divorced. He married Velma Big Hair on Sept. 18, 1993, in Crow Agency and the couple made their home in Crow Agency.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, William; and two brothers, Joe Tobacco and Gerald Bull Tail.
Survivors include his wife, Velma of Crow Agency; seven sons, Arthur (Michelle) Fitzpatrick, Jr., Shawn (Hannah) Fitzpatrick and Dennis (Sherrie) Whiteman of Billings, Joseph (Albertyn) Fitzpatrick of New Mexico, LaGrant (Bertha) Black Eagle of Lodge Grass, Austin Little Light and Jess Holds of Crow Agency; six daughters, Denise (Loydene) Hill of Wyoming, Tiffany (Luke) DeCrane of Pryor, Sarah (Henry) Small of Lodge Grass, Denise (Levi) Yellowmule of Wyola, Fannie (Theodore) Ware and Katherine (Norman) Pretty on Top of Crow Agency; nine sisters, Theresa (Elmer) Gun Shows, Regina (Clem) Goes Ahead, Mary (Hartford) Black Eagle, Delma (Elmer) Yarlott, Patty Jo (Raynard) Caplett, Sonja Stewart, Linda (Manuel) Covers Up, Rosella (Grant) Stewart and Linda (Dwayne) Bird in Ground; 11 brothers, Cedric (Lorena) Walks, Charles (Shirley) Stewart, Larry (Pearl) Tobacco, Dana Tobacco, Victor (Janice) Singer, Greeley (Stella) Not Afraid, Leon (Carolyn) Pretty Weasel, Hartford (Sylvia) Stops, John (Verna) Fitzpatrick, Sidney (Lovonne) Fitzpatrick and Michael (Minnie) Fitzpatrick; two adopted daughters, Debra (Jack) Old Horn and Geneva Stewart; three adopted brothers, John Pretty on Top, Grant (Linda) Bull Tail and Amial (Pamela) Little Light; his adopted parents, Gordon (Phyllis) Plain Bull; 29 grandchildren; one great grandson; two aunts, Christine Stewart and Catherine Little Light; a special niece, Roberta Walks over Ice, who cared for him during his illness; and two special friends, Shane Cook and Thomas (Shirley) Bad Bear.
Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Monday, August 14, in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 15, in the Crow Agency St. Dennis Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Crow Agency cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Zelda Marion Garr
SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Zelda Marion Garr, 84, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at the Sheridan Manor.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Champion Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery.

Philip Guzman Sr.
Memorial services for Philip Guzman Sr. will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Military rites and interment to follow at Holy Cross cemetery.

Mildred ‘Millie’ Hom
MILES CITY – Mildred Hom, age 66, of Miles City, passed away on Aug. 11, 2000, at the St. Vincent Medical Center in Billings due to complications of a stroke and heart failure.
Millie was born on Nov. 19, 1933, in Houston.
She attended schools in Kansas City, Kan., Malta, Glendive, Kinsey, and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Miles City. She worked as a nurse’s aid with the Presentation Sisters and later graduated from the Presentation System for Nursing. She attended college in Miles City while working as a R.N. at Holy Rosary Hospital.
Millie and Kenneth Hom were united in marriage on Dec. 1, 1954, in Miles City. She then attended Montana State University in Bozeman where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing. Millie returned to Miles City where she coordinated, through the state, a nursing program called the Associated R.N. Degree program at Miles Community College.
In the early years of the program, Millie taught all of the courses herself. In 1977, she began working for the Eastern Montana Red Cross. She then moved to Dickinson, N.D., where she administered a four year program for nurses at Dickinson State College from 1982 to 1986. She then also helped to establish the Garfield County Nursing Home in Jordan.
Millie semi-retired and spent a great deal of time volunteering for the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Sacred Heart School, and the Ursuline Convent. She was a lifetime member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Alumni Association, the Montana Nurses Association, the Montana and North Dakota Teachers Associations, the Miles City Women’s Club and the R.S.V.P. Millie was an avid reader, especially of history and mysteries.
She is survived by her husband, Ken Hom of Miles City; a son, Kevin and his wife, Susan of Miles City; a daughter, Kerry Anne and her husband, Joe Wanen of Hysham; a brother, David Banfield of Billings; three sisters; Joyce Herauf of Livingston, Bernetta Christopherson of Miles City, and Bernice Rizzotana of Bonita Springs, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Matthew Aaron Hom, Augustine Irion, April Suzanne Hom, Amanda Hom, Andrew Paul Hom, Dustin, Heidi Anne, Edmond Joe “E.J.”, and James Robert “J.R.”; two great grandchildren, Jaxson and Jillian Riley Hom; numerous nieces; nephews; and special friends, Jim and Noreen Love and Grandma Love. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Sandra; and a brother, William.
Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Gil Hemauer officiating. Rite of Committal will follow in the family lot in the Calvary cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to establish a Nursing Scholarship Fund at Miles Community College and can be sent to the family, 912 S. Stacy, Miles City, MT 59301.

Edna Gertrude Jacobson
BOZEMAN – Edna Gertrude Jacobson, 84, passed away on Aug. 9, 2000, at the Mountain View Care Center in Bozeman. She was born on Nov. 14, 1915, at a homestead on Bridger Creek in Sweet Grass County, the daughter of Ellen and James Peter-sen.
Edna attended school in Springdale and Big Timber, graduating from Sweet Grass County High School. She was married to Sivert (Sam) Jacobson on Dec. 24, 1936, at Big Timber. They lived in many different places until settling in Bozeman in 1952. She was a homemaker and self-employed partner in the family trucking business. She belonged to the Gallatin Valley Snowmobile Association.
Edna’s greatest joy was time spent exploring the back roads, mountain trails, and slopes with her best friend and husband, her “Sam” and son, Don and his family or friends. They found God’s serenity and beauty on foot, horseback, four-wheeler, snowmobiles, motorcycles or camping. Her vantage point, the last couple of years, has been in the car with Sam, touring the many areas they enjoyed. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were bright spots in her life. Sam and Edna were married over 63 happy years, enjoying their work, family and hobbies.
Edna is survived by her husband, Sivert (Sam); son, Donald W. Jacobson Sr. and his wife, Kay of Billings; sisters, Alice Snyder, Independence, Mo., and Shirley Esp, Big Timber; brother, Al Rich, Littleton, Colo.; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Her parents and a grandson, David Wayne Jacobson, preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Bozeman. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Old Highway 10. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 70 E Lake Street, Chicago, IL 60601-9971.

Frederick Allan Miller
Frederick Allan Miller, 47, of Billings, a resident of Parkview Care Center passed away Thursday, Aug. 11, 2000.
Fred was born July 6, 1953, the son of Walter and Mary Miller in Bozeman. He was an active member of St. Patrick’s Co-Cathedral where he played the tamborine in the men’s choir. His interests included playing video games and working on his computer art which he shared with his friends at Parkview. Fred loved music, especially gospel music.
He is survived by three brothers, Don and Dale Miller of Seattle and Bob Miller of Great Falls; one maternal aunt and one maternal uncle, Margaret Hocking Martin and Don Hocking, both of Eugene, Ore.; and another aunt, Ruby Hocking of Bothel, Wash.
Fred met all of the challenges in his life with courage. His zest and enthusiasm for life will always be an inspiration to his family and friends.
A Funeral Mass will take place at 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at Dahl Funeral Chapel, due to construction at St. Patrick’s.
A reception will follow. Family interment will be at Sunset Hills in Bozeman. Memorials sent to St. Patrick’s Co-Cathedral, Trans-portation Fund, 215 N. 31st St., Billings, MT 59101.

Wayne K. Murray
WORLAND, Wyo. – Wayne K. Murray, 79, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at Community Care of Worland.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church. Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, at the Bryant Funeral Home. Interment with military graveside honors will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday in the Holy Cross cemetery in Billings. Bryant Funeral Home is in charge.

Clifford Stephens
LIVINGSTON – Clifford Stephens, 87, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at the Frontier Personal Care Center.
Graveside committal services and interment will be held Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Mountain View cemetery. The public is invited to gather at 10:30 a.m. at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home. The procession to the cemetery will leave at 10:45 a.m. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, and from 9-10:45 a.m. Tuesday.

John C. ‘Jack’ Thom
BUFFALO, Wyo. – John C. “Jack” Thom, 84, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at the Johnson County Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Interment will be in the Willow Grove cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Thom Scholarship Fund or Lymphoma Research. Adams Funeral Home is in charge.

Joan Logan Turnquist
Joan Logan Turnquist, 70, passed away on Aug. 10, 2000, at St. Vincent Hospital after many years of courageously battling rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and ultimately a short battle with lung cancer.
A Billings native, Joan was born on Oct. 18, 1929, to loving parents Marjorie Powell Logan and Dick Logan. She graduated from Billings Senior High School at the age of 18. Then, she attended one year at Montana State College before marrying her best friend, Harold W. Turnquist on Aug. 12, 1947. Joan lived her life with spunk, spirit, a sense of humor, and a devotion to her family that was equaled by few. A loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, spent her entire life nurturing her family and extended family members.
After her marriage, Joan worked at various jobs including the NILE, and the American Murray Grey Association where she retired 10 years ago. Joan most enjoyed being actively involved in her children’s and grandchildren’s activities from scouts to music to school to sports and beyond. She was extremely proud of her Billings roots. Her generous spirit and caring attitude made her a surrogate mother and grandmother to many.
Joan is survived by three sons and their families, Bill and Valerie (Heather and Jon Frampton) of Spokane, Wash., Bob and Linda ( Scott and Emily), and Ken and Sally (Jennifer, Ashley, and Michela) of Belgrade; and one daughter, Pam Turnquist Birkeland (Kade, Brant, and Kiele) of Helena; and son-in-law Mike Birkeland of Fort Benton. Also surviving are three sisters, Marj Rolle (Ken), Harriet Schindele, and Joyce Curtis; and one sister-and-law, Maxine Evangelisti (Amy and Frank).
Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Harold W. Turnquist; her parents, Marjorie and Dick; her parents-in-law, William and Amy; and a brother, Dickie.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 14, at the First Congregational Church. Interment will follow at Mountainview cemetery. Visitation may be made at Smith Downtown Chapel from 12-8 p.m. Sunday, August 13. The casket will be closed at the church. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the American Arthritis Foundation, or to the charity of one’s choice.

Gloria L. Williams
Gloria L. Williams, 62, of Billings, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at her home after a long battle with cancer.
Gloria was born April 17, 1938, in Missoula, a daughter of Herbert and Marie Perry. She was raised and educated in Missoula and married Billie Williams in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, on Dec. 4, 1952. They moved to Billings in 1961. Gloria enjoyed her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Bill; her daughter, Debbie Olson and husband Jim; her son, Steve Williams and wife Lacey; and her stepfather, Don Scollard, all of Billings; four grandchildren, Christine Antonson of Lynden, Wash., Tracy Love, Shane and Ryan Williams, all of Billings; four great-grandchildren, Gloria Olson and Ashley Love of Billings and Mason and Jordan Antonson of Lynden, Wash.; and nephews, Rick and Ron Steigerwald and their families.
Cremation has taken place and a Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 16, at Little Flower Catholic Church. Rite of Committal will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials are suggested to Big Sky Hospice, P.O. Box 35033, Billings, MT 59107. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Melvin G. ‘Mannie’ Baker
POPLAR – Melvin G. “Mannie” Baker of Poplar, 90, passed away on Aug. 10, 2000, at his home.
Mannie was born in 1909 in Montvideo, Minn., the son of George and Martha Baker.
On Nov. 7, 1935, he married Nellie Nesbit in Poplar. She preceded him in death in 1974.
He is survived by two children, Mary Lynne Granbois and husband, Mike of Poplar and Dr. James Baker and wife, Karen of Minneapolis; six grandchildren, Tom, Manny, and Brenda Granbois Perales and Cristina, Susan, and Michael Baker; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Morris Baker of Phoenix; and a sister, Erma Walsh and husband, Joe of Klorntorff, Minn.; brother-in-law, Charles Nesbit and wife, Betty of Billings and John and Doreen Nesbit of Poplar and Billings. He was also preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters.
Mannie was a wheat farmer in the North Poplar area and a resident of Poplar for 75 years. He was member of the Masonic Lodge and the Algeria Shrine Temple of Helena. Mannie was a great supporter of Poplar High School and was honored as their “Fan of the Century” and grand marshal of the Poplar Centennial Celebration in 1995.
His life ended as the harvest was approaching, and he now walks hand-in-hand with Nellie through amber fields of grain. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
Visitations will be held on Sunday, Aug. 13, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Poplar with Rev. John Dyce officiating. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 14, at the First Presbyterian Church in Poplar.

Susie N. (Jones) Barnett
GARRISON, Iowa – Susie N. (Jones) Barnett passed away Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, in Garrison of cancer at the age of 86. She was the daughter of Orion E. and Mary L. Jones, early-day settlers of the Molt, Mont., area. She received her education in a one room country school called the Two Pine School which her father helped build. She moved to Billings and attended Billings Senior High School.
Her love for beautiful clothes became her life work. While in Billings, she was employed by the Gregory shops and the D.J. Cole department store.
She met and married Mathew Barnett, from this union were born three children: son, William Barnett of California, daughter, Barbara Sue Kruse of South Carolina, and son, Robert Barnett of Iowa. Following her husband who was a salesman for McKesson and Sons, a drug firm, they lived in Colorado Springs, Colo., and New York City, with Waterloo, Iowa, becoming a permanent home.
Her husband of over 50 years preceded her in death. She leaves one brother, Maynard M. Jones of Billings; three sisters, Dorothy Arnold of New Bedford, Mass., Isabell Bernier and Myrtle Lang, both of Billings. Interment will be in Cambria, Iowa.

Elmer J. Bromenshenk
Elmer J. Bromenshenk, 82, of Billings, passed away Thursday morning, Aug. 10, 2000, at the Primrose Personal Care Home in Bil-lings. He was born Feb. 27, 1918, in Billings, the son of Joseph and Margaret (Klemm) Bro-menshenk.
Elmer was raised and educated in Custer, Pompeys Pillar and Billings. He graduated from Billings High School in 1936. In his teens, Elmer worked as a foreman at Midland Implement Co., a job he was very proud of. Following graduation, he worked for Midland and began farming on the Zimmerman farm.
On June 22, 1940, he married Mildred Birkholz in Billings. They operated a dairy farm south of Billings for 34 years. During these years, Elmer was an active member of Little Flower Church, where he ushered and helped out. He and Mildred retired to Billings in 1980. In 1993, Mildred preceded him in death after 53 years of marriage.
Elmer was the first resident of the Primrose Personal Care Home, where he enjoyed tending to the garden and yard. He also enjoyed woodworking. Primrose’s excellent care was a great comfort to not only Elmer, but his family as well. Elmer missed his beloved wife Mildred very much and in his last month of life said that she had visited with him every night. He and Mildred are now reunited forever. In addition to Mildred, Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Walter and LeRoy Bromenshenk, his sister Alice Harlan, and his daughter Bonnie.
Survivors include his son, Jerry (Gail) Bromenshenk of Missoula; his daughter, Susan (Jerry) Robertson; his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Bromenshenk; his granddaughter, Carrie (Ryan) Hopson; a great-granddaughter, Taylor Hopson, all of Billings; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday, August 13, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Monday, August 14, at St. Pius X Church with Rite of Committal in Holy Cross cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Primrose Personal Care Home, 1228 Maurine St., Billings, MT 59105 or the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Billings, 2 Poly Drive, Billings, MT 59102.
