Patricia G. Manning
The end of a wonderful and much-enjoyed life came Friday, July 28, 2000, for Patricia G. Manning, 81, of Cody. The daughter of Arthur and Ada Hill, Pat was born Sept. 21, 1918, in Cody. After the death of Arthur Hill from influenza, Pat’s mother remarried and Pat was adopted by Paul R. Greever of Cody.
She attended Cody schools, completing her high school education in 1936 at the National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C., while her father was serving as Wyoming’s sole congressman. Pat attended Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and then the University of Wyoming. She married Jack Irwin in 1939, and they were later divorced.
In 1942, she married Jack E. Manning and their loving and fun marriage ended with his death in 1998.
Pat and Jack lived many places because of his work in the oil business, but Wyoming and Colorado were always at the top of Pat's list. In 1950, while flying across southern Wyoming, the Manning’s single-engine plane crashed, landing in an isolated, snowy field. The plane's wing caught on some rocks, flipping it over and breaking the backs of Pat and Jack along with causing other serious injuries. They began to walk, Pat without shoes, until they were rescued by a rancher. Jack was in a Denver hospital for nine months and Pat for six months.
After many years in Denver, the couple retired to Cody in the late 1980s. They traveled extensively and owned a home in Alamos, Mexico, for 20 years. Another favorite destination was the Greever cabin on Eagle Creek on the North Fork.
The first Queen of the Cody Stampede, Pat was an elegant, gracious hostess, loyal friend and loving parent. She was an avid collector of antiques and an accomplished gardener. She had friends around the world and loved to laugh. She was always impeccably and elegantly dressed.
Pat was proud of her work as president of Sands House, a cancer hospice in Denver.
She loved to dance with Jack to favorites like “Mack the Knife” and “Tie a Yellow Ribbon.”
Survivors include her brother, Bill Greever; son, Jack Manning Jr.; daughters, Karen Gibbons and Jane Sanders, all of Cody, and Susan McConnell of St. John’s, Newfoundland; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
