Ruby Peterson
GREAT FALLS – Ruby Carrie (Johansen) Peterson, 68, passed away at her home Aug. 5, 2000, of congestive heart failure.
Ruby was born Jan. 8, 1932 on a farm in Antelope, Mont. She attended grade school at Lew Wallace country school and also attended High School in Plentywood, Mont.
On Oct. 28, 1948, Ruby married Wallace B. Peterson in Plentywood. She was a waitress at Deck’s CafÈ and Elgin CafÈ, also worked at the Ben Franklin Store, and was a cashier for Montana Dakota Utilities Company for 17 years.
Ruby helped organize the Lupus Chapter in Montana and was President from Feb. 1980 to Sept. 1991. Her hobbies included crocheting, embroidery, cross-stitch, and crafting. She was active in league bowling in Plentywood and taught herself to play the organ.
Survivors include her husband, Wallace (Wally), of Great Falls; daughters, Colleen Johnson of Portland, Ore., and Carrie Landerdahl of Bozeman; son, Wayne Peterson of Billings; sisters, Elaine Johansen of Sovan, Calf., Florence Epana of Lompoc, Calf., Elvira McCarty and Shirley Hoffarth both of Great Falls, Zelda Fink of Glasgow, Arliss Heisler of Billings and Gladys Robertson of Plentywood; brother, Alfred Johansen of Antelope; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home, with burial in Highland cemetery. Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Duane W. Schieffer
WORDEN – Duane W. Schieffer, 74, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at the St. Vincent Hospital. The son of Peter and Agatha Schieffer, he was born Sept. 21, 1925 in Menominee, Neb.
Duane had farmed before working for Greyhound Bus Lines as a driver, transferring to Montana in 1955. A soil and water conservation contractor, he operated Schieffer Construction and Worden Ready Mix for many years.
He was a past president of the Land Improvement Contractors of America. He was also a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church, the Lions, Elks, and had been a founding member of the South Central Montana Antique Farm Machinery Association. An outdoors man, Duane enjoyed hunting and fishing, his passion however was restoring antique farm machinery.
He married Grace Gednalske in 1976.
Survivors include his wife, Grace of Worden; four children, Marcy Evans of Kearney, Neb., Shirley O’Neill of Billings, John Schieffer of Kalispell, and Mary Yost of Santa Barbara, Calif.; five brothers and sisters, Sally Fisher of Boone, Iowa, Msgr. Stanley Schieffer of Red Cloud, Neb., Peter J. Schieffer, Jr., of Ponca, Neb., DelRay Schieffer of Denver, Colo. and Carmen Bohlsen of Omaha, Neb., 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Rosary will be recited, at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Cremation will follow the mass.
Memorials may be made to St. Vincent Hospital, ICU or the charity of one’s choice.

Guy L. Troup
Guy L. Troup, 91, an Army Veteran died of natural causes on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000.
He was born June 9, 1909 in Goshen, Ind. He served in the U. S. Army for four years, the National Guard for 13 years, and served in World War II. He was a member of the Legion Post No. 4 for 54 years and where he was a part of the Drum and Bugle Corps.
He married Helen Rademacher, on June 24, 1949 in Billings, Mont.
He attended the University of Montana in Missoula and graduated from Poly Technic in Billings. He worked for the Billings Gazette for 25 years and retired in 1972 and going on to be a television repairman until his death.
He enjoyed telling his war stories, playing cribbage with family and friends and tending to his rose bushes and caring for his dog “Tawny”
He was preceded in death by his parents Ellen and Omer Troup.
Survivors include his wife, Helen of 51 years; two daughters, Karen (Gilen) McKinnon of Helena and, Cheryl and Gary Fearing of Minnesota; seven grandchildren, Kim Gililland, Kelley Gililland, Nicole (McAtee) Mayo, Ty McAtee, and Lance McKinnon, Jennifer (McKinnon) Fehr, Lisa (Fearing) Kettel; six great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at the Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. West. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Charity of one’s choice.

Joseph Uecker
Joseph Daniel Uecker, 84, passed away peacefully at his home Friday morning, Aug. 4, 2000, from natural causes.
Joe was born on Dec. 30, 1915 in Peru, Indiana, the son of Herman and Emma Uecker. Joe was preceded in death by his loving wife, Carmen and son, Dean Francis. Joe is survived by his sister, Sylvia Esani, daughter, Sandra and sons, Jerry and Dwight.
Joe’s life was blessed with seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. We will all miss him very much and he will be remembered with love in our hearts and smiles on our faces.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Billings Family Worship Center at 3225 Rosebud Drive. Cremation or Funeral Gallery was in charge of the cremation services.

George William Hibscher
RICHLAND, Wash. – George William Hibscher, age 85, of Richland, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at Kadlec Medical Center. He was born on July 27, 1915, in Billings to John and Lillian Hibscher.
George has lived in the Tri-Cities since 1962 and was recognized as an electrician in the Hanford area. He was a member of IBEW Local 112 in Kennewick and a member of the IBEW for 55 years. In 1980, George retired and dedicated his time to his home and family.
George is survived by his wife, Mary of 52 years; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Amy of Federal Way; a sister, Alta Orr of Hot Springs, Mont.; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Polly; two nieces, Debbie Hibscherand and Cathy Helmbrecht; and a great-nephew, Tyler Helmbrecht, all from Billings.
George was preceded in death by his only daughter, Marjorie.
A viewing for family and friends will be held on from 8 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, in the chapel located at Einan's Funeral Home. A reception will follow at the West Side Church located at 615 Wright Avenue in Richland.

Kenneth Kamppinen
COLUMBUS – Kenneth Kamppinen’s soul left his earthly shell to soar with the angels on Friday evening, Aug. 4, 2000. He was at home with his family.
Kenneth was born on Jan. 13, 1925, southwest of Columbus, a son of Jack and Vienna Kamppinen. His family settled on their ranch 16 miles southwest of Columbus when Kenneth was five years old, and he remained on the home place his entire life.
He loved his cows, gardening, fishing and observing nature and her cycles.
He attended Joe Hill School through eighth grade and graduated from Columbus High School. He served in the U.S. Navy for a brief time near the end of World War II. Kenneth also piloted a crop duster for many years.
On July 4, 1952, he married Doris Hill, and they were together for 48 wonderful years. He leaves behind his wife; and four sons, Kermith, Kevin, Keith and Kim, all of the family ranch. Also surviving are one granddaughter; and two grandsons.
“You will be greatly missed as a loving husband and father. We thank you for sharing your life with us, and the incredible journey of transition.”
Cremation has taken place, and in accordance with his wishes no service is planned. Memorials may be given to the Stillwater Team of Big Sky Hospice, Columbus, MT 59019, or to the charity of choice. The Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge is in charge of arrangements.

G. Robert Knapp
HELENA – G. Robert “Bob” Knapp, 79, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, from a massive heart attack.
Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, August 7, at Hagler-Anderson Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 8, at the Cathedral of St. Helena. Military grave side services will follow at Resurrection cemetery. Memorials to the organization of donor’s choice. Hagler-Anderson Mortuary of Helena is in charge of arrangements.

Sadie F. Nickelson
THERMOPOLIS, Wyo. – Sadie F. Nickelson, 105, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at Canyon Hills Manor.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Mortimore Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Riverside cemetery.

Viola Swanson
COLUMBUS – Viola Swanson, 81, of Columbus, passed away Saturday, August 8, 2000, at Stillwater Community Hospital.
She was born Aug. 22, 1918, at Watkins, Mont., a daughter of Jacob and Katherine Rath.
She married Iver C. Swanson and the couple resided in Columbus since 1949. Mr. Swanson preceded her in death in 1984.
Viola was known by many in the Columbus community as having done housekeeping, painting and janitorial work.
Survivors include one son, Leroy “Gene” Lee and Dee Burdett; a daughter, Sandra (Rick) Jacobs; three grandchildren, Micheil, Jake & Kim all of Columbus; one sister, Caroline (Otto) Spidel of Missoula; and several nieces; and nephews.
Viola was preceded in death by her husband; a granddaughter, Kirstin Lee; two brothers, Robert and Irvin Rath.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Columbus Evangelical Church. Memorials are suggested to Stillwater Community Hospital.
Smith Funeral Chapel-Columbus was in charge of cremation.

Helen Rose Funk Vold
Helen Rose Funk Vold passed away at Deaconess Hospital in Billings at 7:38 a.m. Aug. 4, 2000.
Helen was born Aug. 8, 1931, near Chinook at Norheim. She was the third of six children born to David Jacob Funk and Elizabeth Alice Peters Funk.
Helen graduated from Chinook High School. Then searched for greener pastures for a few years.
Helen earned her bachelor’s degree in education at Northern Montana College in Havre. She taught school for three years at Rocky Boy and another year at Inverness. She then moved to Billings and earned her master’s degree in special education at Eastern Montana College.
Helen worked many jobs in her life: bookkeeping, teacher, cook, mother, and grandmother. For fun she enjoyed many crafts like painting, pottery, quilting, just to name a few.
At the age of 57, Helen joined the Peace Corps for three years. She spent most of her time in Casablanca, Morroco, teaching special education.
Helen has two children, James W. Vold of Renton, Wash., and Eric K. Vold of Billings. She has three grandchildren, Travis, Justin, and Mathew, all of Billings.
Helen has three brothers, Stanley (Doris) Funk, Nampa, Idaho, Harvey (Maria) Funk, Omaha, Neb., and Gerry (Diane) Funk, Whitehall; two sisters, Elna Merritt, Clarksville, Ind., and Laura Adams, Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at the residence of Eric Vold in Billings.

Leonora Commers Wirth
With her family at her side, Leonora Commers Wirth, 101, of Billings, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at St. John’s Lutheran Home. Leonora was born in Minneapolis on Jan. 4, 1899, to John Commers and Mary Ahles Commers.
Leonora and brother Edward moved to Helena with their parents in 1905. She graduated from St. Vincent’s Academy in 1917, and attended one year at Helena Business College. Her first employment was as secretary to the first purchasing agent for the state of Montana. Leonora continued working in 1941, with Montana Children’s Home and Shodair Hospital in Helena. She retired in 1966 from Montana Teachers Retirement System.
Leonora was united in marriage to Carl A. Wirth in St. Helena Cathedral, Oct. 14, 1924. A daughter, Mary Carol was born to them. The five grandchildren were the joy of both “Grandma Nor” and “Poppa Carl.”
After Carl’s death in 1966, Leonora continued the volunteerism she had done all her adult life in Helena. Leonora volunteered with the Red Cross and Retired Senior Volunteer Program. She was coordinator of volunteers for Catholic Daughters at Fort Harrison Veteran’s Hospital and had been a charter member of St. John’s Hospital Guild in Helena. Leonora received the City of Helena “Volunteer of the Year” award in the 1970s. She was the Daughters of Isabella “Daughter of the Year” in 1975. She received the awards for 1, 500 hours service with the Red Cross for her volunteer work at the blood drawings.
In 1976, she moved to Billings to be near her family. She joined Holy Rosary Parish, St. Frances Cabrini Circle, and the Legion of Mary. She also belonged to the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Billings Senior Citizens Center, and the National Council of Catholic Women.
Leonora is survived by her daughter, Mary Carol (Jack) Hall of Billings; five grandchildren, Robert C. Hall, Jeanne H. Hallock, Richard C. Hall, Susan H. Vetsch, and Rory C. Hall; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two nieces and one nephew.
Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary. The Catholic Daughters of the Americas will lead the Rosary preceding the Vigil at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 7, at Holy Rosary Parish. Rite of Committal will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Resurrection cemetery, Helena.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Home for the benefit of the D.C.U. and employees.

Elsie Mae Barnard
MALTA – Elsie Mae Caroline Barnard, 80, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at the Phillips County Hospital of natural causes.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at the Adams Memorial Chapel with burial in the Malta cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Crippled Children’s Hospital, c/o Malta Shrine Club, P.O. 1061, Malta, MT 59538 or the Shodair Children’s Hospital. Adams Funeral Home of Malta is in charge of arrangements.
