Erling Brekke
PLENTYWOOD – Funeral services for Erling Brekke will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000. Pastor David C. Curtright will officiate at the service at Plentywood Lutheran Church; interment will be in Antelope Creek cemetery. Erling, 88, died Wednesday morning at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood.
Erling was born Aug. 26, 1911, in the farm home of his parents, John and Anna (Thorson) Brekke, southeast of Antelope. As a youth and young man, he had great physical strength and participated in a variety of sports. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Idaho for a time, but soon returned home to farm with his family and participate in community affairs. He and his brother, Ivar, along with Clem and Arnold Lilja, sang in a quartet, accompanied by his sister, Inga, on the pump organ. He often remembered participating in a community play to raise funds for the Reserve Hall.
He married Esther Waller at the Homestead Lutheran Church Nov. 10, 1940. They made their home on the farm in the Antelope community. Erling was a member of the board of directors of the Reserve Elevator, and the Federal Land Bank; and was one of the founders and a longtime board member of the Bethel Free Lutheran Church in Culbertson.
Erling treasured good food: Esther’s home-baked bread, steak, and lemon-meringue or coconut cream pie was the perfect meal, although good salmon was almost as good as the steak! On Christmas eve afternoon, he and Esther would often deliver a meal of baked chicken, bread, and dessert to area bachelors. Erling loved to just get in his pickup or a lifetime of Oldsmobiles and drive ... he totaled up over a million odometer miles through the years. He was born and lived all his life on the family farm: a “man of the land, ” with great love and pride in his Norwegian heritage and the accomplishments of his family. He maintained a progressive attitude, constantly trying new ideas even as he treasured the best of the old ways. He read the Wall Street Journal, kept up with current events and followed sports on television and in the local and regional papers.
After Esther died March 21, 1996, Erling lived on the farm as long as he could before entering the nursing home in December 1999. A lifelong practical joker, his teasing and sense of humor kept his mind sharp and entertained the nursing home staff. He never complained and always appreciated the faithful visits of his family.
Erling is survived by one son, Bayard and his wife, Donna; by two daughters, Shirley and her husband, Walter Nelson, and Charlotte and her husband, James Nielsen; and by one sister, Inga Hart, all of Plentywood. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Michael and Matthew Brekke; Steve (Kathy) Nelson, Stacie (Jim) Eastlick, Julie (Bennett) Kleinberg, Greg (Deanna) Nielsen, and Brenda and Jeffrey Nielsen, and by six great-grandchildren: Jilliam and Trent Robinson, Erik Nelson, James and Jordyn Eastlick, and Braedon Nielsen.
