Mildred ‘Pill’ Scott
Aug. 21, 1906–Sept. 5, 2000
SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Mildred “Pill” Scott of Sheridan passed away Sept. 25, 2000. She was born in York, Neb., on Aug. 21, 1906, to Charles and Marie Sandall and was the oldest of eight children. The family lived in York where both parents had been born and where Mr. Sandall practiced law. His prominence as a lawyer earned him an appointment as a Supreme Court commissioner. Both of Pill’s grandparents were immigrants from Scandinavian countries.
Because her father was active in state politics, her mother was gone frequently accompanying him in his travels. As the oldest daughter, Pill helped raise her youngest sister and brother. She developed her parenting responsibilities while still in high school. This experience stood her in good stead when she started raising her own family.
After graduating from high school, she attended Grinnell College in Iowa for a year and then transferred to the University of Nebraska. She taught school briefly in Swanton, Neb., at the grade school level and helped with the high school glee club. All of the Sandall girls were proficient musicians. Pill was an accomplished pianist and had a beautiful singing voice.
It was during her sophomore year at Nebraska that she met future husband Homer Scott, from Lincoln. They were married on Oct. 17, 1928, in York. Pill’s mother, Marie, was her matron of honor. Pill and Homer were married for 65 years. Homer passed away in 1993 at the age of 89.
Homer graduated with a degree in civil engineering. This was the beginning of the depression years and jobs were difficult to find. The two of them lived in Pennsylvania and Alabama pursuing construction jobs. After several years of leading a semi-nomadic existence, they returned to Nebraska where Homer eventually was hired by Peter Kiewit Sons’ Company as a laborer.
This started a long and fruitful career with PKS that eventually led to Homer moving the family to Wyoming and then to Sheridan in 1937. By this time a son, Dan, had been born, followed by a second son, Homer, Jr. These two were later followed by a daughter, Susan, and then two more boys, Tom and Jim.
Pill Scott idolized her husband and was deeply devoted to her family. Homer was looking after projects in a four-state region and traveled extensively. Pill served a dual role during the week until Homer would get back home for the weekend during these early years.
She did a marvelous job of raising her family under some rather trying conditions. She fully supported her husband in his demanding job while holding the household together. Their mutual sacrifices were rewarded as Homer rose to a senior position in the Kiewit Company. This same attitude of help and support was manifested again as Homer built the Padlock Ranch and First Interstate Bank into successful family enterprises.
Pill was known for her love of life. She and Homer had many friends in the Sheridan area as well as Palm Springs, Calif., where they spent winters after retirement. She enjoyed company and was a wonderful hostess. She loved music and enjoyed listening to opera and the classics. She took up painting in her later years and produced some beautiful oils of floral arrangements.
Pill loved being around people and getting involved in civic activities. She had a marvelous sense of humor and could always be counted on to rise to the occasion with the right words or a story. She was very loyal to her college sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma. She was a charter member of her P.E.O. Club and a long-time member of both the Sheridan and Dayton Women’s Clubs. She enjoyed playing cards and a game of golf with her friends as long as things didn’t get too serious.
A long-time member of the Presbyterian Church, she and her late husband gave generously to the church’s capital campaigns. They also supported other local organizations like the YMCA, Children’s Center and Salvation Army. Their affection for the church and youth activities is still evidenced through the generosity of their family foundation.
She is survived by her five children, Dan and Jeanne Scott of Dayton, Homer and Janet Scott, Jr. of Sheridan, Susan and Jack Heyneman of Fishtail, Mont., Tom and Joan Scott and Jim and Chris Scott, both of Billings, along with 19 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three of her four sisters and numerous nieces and nephews.
She will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends. Her grace and beauty were only matched by her strength of character and uncomplaining resolve under difficult times. Her life will serve as an inspiration to all of those who grew to love and admire her during her time here on earth.
Services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Sheridan. Internment will be in the family plot at the Dayton cemetery. Memorials may benefit the First Presbyterian Church, Sheridan Children’s Center, the Tongue River Child’s Place or a charity of the donor’s choice.
