Francis J. ‘Frank’ Smith
April 18, 1924-Sept. 21, 2000
Francis J. “Frank’ Smith, 76, of Billings, passed away peacefully after a short, courageous fight with cancer at his home surrounded by his loved ones Thursday morning, Sept. 21, 2000.
Frank was born on his parents’ homestead in Molt and they moved to Billings in 1927. The main motivation for him remaining in Billings was his strong family ties and good friends. He enjoyed sharing with others how he weighed 12 pounds when he came into the world and was named after a Catholic priest, Father Francis Joseph Schlevlin, the priest in Molt.
Frank was proud of his Irish Catholic heritage. He attended Fratt Catholic School before graduating from Billings Senior High in 1942. Following his graduation, he pursued his two loves: a career in aircraft mechanics and his high school sweetheart, Maeona Weldon. He joined the war effort in 1943 as a proud Marine and saw active duty in the South Pacific. He married Maeona on June 3, 1944. Frank was honorably discharged from the Marines in 1946 as a staff sergeant.
Not wanting to further his accomplished aircraft training for love of family, Frank returned to Billings and went into the grocery business, managing Southside Safeway, Clarks First Avenue, Evergreen IGA, Ben’s IGA and others. His love and loyalty to his family found him, at times, working three jobs to support his wife and six children.
In his later years, Frank worked for Northern Tank Lines as a truck driver before retiring in 1988. Following his retirement, he enjoyed camping in his motor home. He was always proud of his large family. He and his family were most proud of his four years of sobriety that he celebrated on Aug. 13, 2000. His love of chocolate made him popular with his many grandchildren. Frank will also be remembered for his tall, slim, handsome frame, as well as his quick wit and charm.
He was a member of the American Legion, the Teamsters union and the Marine Corps League.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, William and Helen Smith; four brothers, Bill, Gene, James and Leonard Smith; a sister, Louise Kraske, and a grandson, Kevin Mudd.
He is survived by his best friend and wife, Maeona; sister, Mary Oliver of Harlowton; his sons, Greg Smith (Susanne) of Colstrip, Frank Smith, Jr. (Marcia) of Van Nuys, Calif., and Scott Smith (Lynette) of Idaho Falls, Idaho; his three daughters, Beverly Lindley (Paul) of Nye, Lana Thompson (Boomer) of Billings and Dee Dee Madera of Billings; his 24 grandchildren, Lisa, Becky, Libby, Danielle, Matt, Jon, Andrea, Janna, Jenny, Tammy, Shauna, Chanda, P.J., Heather, Brittany, Travis, Joshua, Jason, Andrew, Brandi, Tara, Chelsie, Shelby and Sydney; 14 great-grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
Thank you, Dad and Frank, for always bringing us together to love and laugh with so many family and friends. Until we meet again ... We will miss you dearly.
A Vigil Service will be held 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Rite of Committal with military honors will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be sent to Big Sky Hospice or the charity of one’s choice.
