Lillian Cunningham
Lillian was born in Great Falls in 1912. Her father was George Heller and her mother was Anna Groomsman. (Ann had migrated from Germany while a young girl). Lillian had a sister, Annie, and two brothers, Mick and Dick. All are now deceased.
When she was six years old, the family moved to a ranch in the Harden-St. Xavier area where Lillian learned to ride. She became an excellent rider. She also learned to handle guns and became a good marksman. Lillian attended school on the reservation through the eighth grade. Although she dreamed of becoming a teacher, her father did not believe in wasting higher education on girls so she was unable to attend high school.
Lillian loved to dance and she and her brothers would ride horseback for miles to attend dances.
Lillian married Tom Blankenship in 1930, and worked with him in running a small truck line. During the winter one of her jobs was to get up every few hours to start the trucks so they would not freeze up. Like most women of that era she worked with the men in the fields shoveling beets and pitching hay. Her only child, Thomas Jr., was born in 1931. He spent a lot of time playing and sleeping on the truck seats while she loaded and drove truck.
Lillian and Tom separated about 1934. She supported herself and her son by cleaning houses, working in a cannery and cooking in restaurants. She loved cooking. She cooked in Cooke City while the Red Lodge-Cooke City highway was being built. She later worked many years in the cafeteria of the Lincoln Junior High School. She particularly liked working there where she could work with the junior high students. She never got over her love of working with children. Years after she left the school, “her kids” would come to visit and to offer assistance. She was in contact with some of them all her life.
She later cooked at Western Manor Nursing Home. She finally had to quit work when she broke her shoulder and arm in an accident at Western Manor.
In 1943, Lillian married Fred Cunningham, and got the entire Cunningham family. Fred was one of 18 children and Lillian was close to all of them. She has been particularly close to Fred’s nieces Alice Walker and Edna Bray who reside in Billings. Fred died in 1972, which was a bad year for Lillian as she lost her mother, husband and brother in a four-month period.
Through the years, Lillian maintained her love of dancing, regularly attending dances in various organizations – in later years primarily the South Side Senior Center. It was there where she met Reuben Siegfried who became her constant companion until his death in 1994.
In her last years she could barely move around with a walker and could stand for only a few minutes and because “it is no fun cooking for one”, cooking remained a large part of her life. She spent almost all of her time in her rocking chair, even sleeping in it at night. She spent most other hours reading her ever growing collection of cook books and watching the cooking shows on TV.
She also watched a lot of baseball which she loved. For years she attended every Mustang home game. It was a big thrill for her to meet one of her son’s friends who had played professional baseball in Billings.
Lillian also loved to play cards, particularly pinochle and she was an excellent player. She and her son played cribbage when he visited. The last time was August and she beat him three out of five games and never missed a count.
Lillian loved going in the car for a ride in the country. She bad been a good, if a bit fast, driver. When she could no longer drive herself, she was absolutely thrilled when someone would take her for a ride. A favorite routine was the back road from Columbus to Red Lodge.
Lillian loved everything about the outdoors particularly animals and flowers. Confined to her house she would look out the windows and would “make her day” to see a rabbit or a new blossom.
She adamantly refused any suggestion of leaving her home. “I don’t want to be around all those old people.” She indeed remained young at heart until her death.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at Smith’s West Chapel, 304 34th St. West. Memorials may be made to Special K Ranch, P.O. Box 479, Columbus, MT 59019-0479.
