Robert E. ‘Bob’ Johnston, Jr.

Robert E. “Bob” Johnston, Jr. was born on Oct. 4, 1924, in Stillwater, Colo., the fifth child of seven born to Robert E. Johnston, Sr. and Helen (Hallock) Johnston. He lived in Grand Lake, Colo., until his junior year of high school, when he moved to Crane, Mont., to live and work with Eldridge and Irene Petersen. On June 16, 1945, Robert was married to Agnes Norby in Fairview, Mont. In the early 1960s, Robert worked in construction and other various jobs. He retired from Texaco in the early ’90s after 15 years of service.

Robert died early Monday morning, Oct. 29, 2001, at the Deaconess Medical Center, Billings.

Robert is survived by his son, Dennis and wife Cheri Johnston of Billings; daughters, Joyce and husband Troy Guffey of Savage, Patsy Johnston of Sidney and Tammy and husband Matt Mays of Aurora, Colo.; brother, Jim Johnston of Fallbrook, Calif.; Thomas Johnston, of Fort Collins, Colo.; sisters, Irene Petersen of Sidney and Gertrude Olsen of Portland, Ore.; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Agnes; and a son, Richard.

Oliver LeRoy Kirsch

GLENDIVE – Oliver “Ollie” LeRoy Kirsch, age 83, of Glendive, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at the Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Eastern Montana State Veterans cemetery in Miles City. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements

Lester Knapp

MALTA – Lester Knapp, 88, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at the Country Home of natural causes.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Malta Lutheran Church with burial in the Malta cemetery. Adams Funeral Home is in charge.

Betty Ann Lindell

LAUREL – Betty Ann Lindell, 68, of Laurel, formerly of Red Lodge, died Saturday evening, Nov. 3, 2001, at Hospice Horizon House in Billings.

Betty was born on Sept. 24, 1933, in Red Lodge, a daughter of Samuel and Mary May. She was raised and educated in Red Lodge, graduating from Carbon County High School.

In June of 1951 she married Charles Leonard Walker, and they resided in Belfry for many years where they raised their four children, Lenny, Vicki, Rocky and Sam. Mr. Walker preceded her in death.

Betty later married Wallace Lindell, and they settled in Laurel. Betty cooked at the Owl Cafe and the Laurel Country Club. In later years she worked in home health care for West Mont. Betty enjoyed working with the public, cooking and eating biscuits and gravy and apple pie. She loved her family and friends and will be greatly missed by both.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Skupa and Samuel May; her husbands, Charles Walker and Wallace Lindell; one son, Lenny Walker, and one daughter, Vicki Hoffman.

Survivors include her two sons, Sam Walker and Rocky Walker; three stepchildren, Jeff Lindell, Rod Lindell and Etta Lindell; five grandchildren, Neisha, Terrin, Alyssa, Amanda and Shannon; one sister, Marguerite Bottroff; and five nephews and their families.

Memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, in St. Agnes Catholic Church in Red Lodge. Cremation has taken place, and interment will be in the Belfry cemetery. Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice Horizon House, 1019 Neptune, Billings, MT 59105.

Dolores Wight Rudolph

Evelyn Dolores Rudolph, age 86, of 1019 Neptune Blvd., Billings, passed away Nov. 4, 2001 after a long illness. She was a strong willed fighter and taught us the meaning of living life with dignity and grace. We will miss her so much!

Dolores was born June 8, 1915, in Billings, the daughter of Frank Amherst Wight and Dolores Parker Wight. The family moved to Miles City in April of 1929. She graduated from Custer County High School in the class of 1933. Dolores and Kenneth Rudolph were married in Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Miles City on Jan. 1, 1935. They owned and operated the Graves Funeral Home for 40 years. She had been active in the funeral home business and had a Funeral Director’s license.

Dolores was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, a 50-year member of Chapter K, PEO, a 50-year member of Custer Chapter No. 25 of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Custer County Art and Heritage Center, the Range Riders Reps and Range Rider’s Museum, a charter member and past president of the Junior Women’s Club of Miles City, a member and past president of the Holy Rosary Hospital Guild and a member of the Montana State Funeral Director’s Association.

Mrs. Rudolph is survived by two children, Judy Clark of Billings and a son, Gary and his wife Billie of Boulder, Mont.; five grandchildren, Melissa Leiseth and her husband Jody, Jennifer Kraust and her husband John, Matthew Clark, Jonathan and Jeffrey Rudolph; three great-grandchildren, Samantha and Jonah Leiseth and Justin Ahleen. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth, her parents and a sister, Betty Jane Sorenson.

A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Friday, Nov. 23. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Miles City, or Big Sky Hospice, Billings.

Lynda L. Sigler

LIVINGSTON – Lynda L. Sigler, 59, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at Frontier Personal Care Center.

Cremation has taken place at Franzen-Davis Crematory in Livingston. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Jordan.

Paula J. Smith

LIVINGSTON – Paula J. Smith, 50, died at her home Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, of natural causes.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home in Livingston. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Mammoth Chapel in Mammoth, Yellowstone National Park, Wyo. Cremation will follow the services.

Terry Stubblefield

MILES CITY – Terry Stubblefield, age 45, of Miles City, passed away Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, as a result of a plane wreck.

Terry was born on Feb. 11, 1956, the son of William and Nona (Richards) Stubblefield. He attended grade school at Johnson Country School at Ridgeway, Mont., and junior and high school in Miles City and went to Miles Community College where he received his two year certificate in mechanics. He went to work for Custer Motor, Provost Motor, L.P. Anderson and Mac’s Frontier until he opened Terry’s Repair in 1983 which he operated until the time of his death.

Terry was a member of the Eagles Lodge and the International Automotive Technician Network (IATN). Out of 35,000 techs, Terry was chosen by IATN as Tech of the Year in October of 2001. He loved to snowmobile, fly his airplane and work with computers.

Terry is survived by his father, William “Stub” Stubblefield of Miles City; a brother, Randy Stubblefleld of Miles City; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins whom he thought the world of; and his two cats, Peanut and Lucky. He was preceded in death by his mother, Nona Stubblefield.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery in Miles City. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of the arrangements.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Rural Cancer Care Foundation, P.O. Box 1324, Miles City, MT 59301, or to the charity of ones choice.

Helder Tonn

MILES CITY – Helder Tonn, age 91, of Miles City passed away Monday, Nov. 5, 2001 at the Holy Rosary Extended Care.

Helder was born on May 10, 1910, in Detroit, Mich., the son of Wilhelm and Wilhelmine (Krause) Tonn. Helder moved with his family to Montana in 1918 where they settled on the Mizpah Creek. Helder graduated from high school in Miles City and attended the University of Montana. Upon his return to the ranch, Helder entered a partnership with his brothers, Armand and Marcus and his father. The family moved to Pumpkin Creek and owned and operated the SY Ranch for the duration of his lifetime. Helder was married to Virginia Gattis on Jan. 1, 1949, in Miles City. He was a member of the Miles City Club, Sage Riders and a long time secretary of the MizpahPumpkin Creek Grazing Association. Helder enjoyed the cattle business and the beauty of the land.

Helder is survived by his sons, Lance and his wife Deb and their children Drew Tonn, Terell Patterson and Chelsea Patterson of Miles City, and Bruce and his wife Julie of south Miles City; and a brother, Marcus J. Tonn and his wife Catherine. Helder was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; his brother, Armand; and his sister, Henrietta Paulin.

Helder was known to his friends as a gentleman, a good cow hand and a great visitor.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, in the chapel in Miles City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Miles City. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery in Miles City. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of the arrangements.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Custer County Educational Foundation.

Darrell Floyd Barnby

Darrell Floyd Barnby passed away on April 2, 2001, at Deaconess Hospital after an extended illness.

Darrell was born Feb. 15, 1954, in Glasgow, to his parents, Marvin LeRoy Barnby and Clara Lorreta Stein. He grew up in Opheim and graduated in Glasgow in 1972.

Prior to graduation, Darrell worked for Buttreys in Glasgow as a boxboy and eventually became a journeyman meat cutter.

Most of Darrell’s employment was as a meat cutter, which eventually brought him to Billings, where he worked at several store locations. He knew his business and finally retired from Buttreys after 26 years, due to illness. After overcoming his illness, he was employed by County Market up until the time of his recent illness that took his life.

On Sept. 7, 1991, Darrell married “the love of his life,” Mary Beth “Betsy” Stambek. Together, they built a wonderful marriage and acquired their only “baby,” Raider, their 180 lb. Alaskan Malamute Lab dog, which they loved dearly.

Darrell’s hobbies were hunting and fishing. There wasn’t a weekend or day off that he wasn’t ready to go fishing somewhere. He also loved to put in a garden, always overextending himself in tomatoes.

Darrell is survived by his wife, Betsy; their dog Raider; parents Marvin Barnby of Opheim and Clara (Doug) Arneson of Glasgow; his brother Randy (Chris) Barnby and niece Miranda; sister Karla (Robert) Newell of Kent, Wash., and their children, Chad, Lindsey and Landon Newell. He is also survived by his father and mother-in-law Sonny and Evelyn Stambek; brothers-in-law Kenneth (Annie) Stambek, Daniel Stambek and Joseph Stambek; nieces Rebecca, Rachel and Alexis and nephews Gregory and Christopher, who are all of Decatur, Mich.

Cremation has taken place at Smith’s Crematory. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 5, at Smith West Chapel; 304 34th Street West. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Bessie Victoria Riter

BROADUS — Bessie Victoria Riter, 73, of Broadus, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at the Powder River Manor.

Visitation will begin at 12 noon, Wednesday, April 4, at the Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Broadus. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 5, in the Stevenson & Sons Chapel.

Edna L. Williams Bellach

THREE FORKS — Edna L. Williams Bellach, 89, of Three Forks, died in the Livingston Memorial Hospital Saturday evening, March 31, 2001. She had enjoyed a beautiful day visiting in Three Forks and Willow Creek, calling on her sister Lanora Peterson, remembering the days at the Jefferson School, visiting her former home on First Avenue in Three Forks and fondly remembering the days at the plumbing shop where she and Ed, her husband of 61 years, had owned and supported their five children.

Mrs. Bellach was born Dec. 16, 1911, to Walter and Vesta “Bessie” Williams in a log cabin that still stands near Highway 10, just a few miles from Sappington. She had two younger sisters, Lanora and Esther Bacon. Edna, as a young woman, worked at the Sacajawea Hotel and the Gateway Cafe before her marriage to Ed Bellach in Helena on April 26, 1930.

Mrs. Bellach was well-known on Main Street in Three Forks, where she and Ed owned a plumbing, electrical, appliance, hardware and sporting goods store. Edna’s favorite part of it was her complete line of lovely giftware. She was a past matron of the Order of Eastern Star and a past mother advisor of the Rainbow for Girls in Three Forks.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ed Bellach; daughter Arietta Morse; and son Edwin Bellach.

She is survived by her daughters Violet Neiss of Portland, Ore., Edna Saltenberger of Anaconda and Helen Peterson of Livingston; and sister Lanora Peterson of Willow Creek. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren, Carol, Alan, Dale, Karen Morse, all of Great Falls; four Bellach children, Jim of Texas, Jody of Colorado, Larry of Washington and Alice of Nevada; three Neiss grandchildren in Portland, Ore., Rick, Mark and Todd. There are five Saltenberger grandchildren, Terri Lynn of Billings, Jack Jr., Dan and Andy of Anaconda and Jana Kay of Wyoming; and Shawn Peterson of Helena, and Mistidawn Peterson of Livingston; also 34 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 6, at 2 p.m. in the Three Forks United Methodist Church, with Reverend Lyle Hamilton officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview cemetery, Three Forks. V & L Mortuaries Chapel in Three Forks is handling arrangements.
