John, 86, died Monday afternoon, June 11, 2001, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Plentywood.

John was born at Plentywood Aug. 19, 1914, the son of George and Sigrid Overby. A lifelong farmer and rancher, he was raised on the family farm south of Plentywood, and lived there until retirement in 1979. He graduated from the Reitan elementary school near the farm, going to school early to start the fire – for the princely sum of 10 cents per month!

After he graduated from the eighth grade there, he worked on the family farm and attended a diesel mechanic’s program at Montana State College in Bozeman for a time. John was a gifted mechanic and welder who designed and built much of his own farm machinery. Back in the “old days” he played accordion for many barn and school dances throughout the area.

John married Ella Juul at the Plentywood Lutheran Church Parsonage Nov. 25, 1936, beginning a life together that spanned more than 64 years until Ella’s death this January. In recent years, John devoted his life to caring for his beloved Ella, first at home, and for the last five years at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home.

Baptized and confirmed in the Antelope Creek Lutheran Church, he was a member of Plentywood Lutheran Church. When the original church was demolished, John salvaged and preserved the bell and arranged for it to be reinstalled in front of the current church building several years ago. John served on the Board of the Federal Land Bank for over 20 years, was active in the Old Tractor Club and had served as its president. He was a 50-year member of the Plentywood Masonic Lodge and a member of the Shrine.

In the early 1950s, John became the first snowmobile dealer in the United States. He first imported the large Bombardier snow coaches made in Canada and later brought in the early machines that have evolved into today’s snowmobiles.

John is survived by three sons and their families: Gordon and his wife Marilyn; and Curt and his wife, Myrta, all of Plentywood; and Rick and his wife Kay, of Inchelium, Wash. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Erik, Kirk, Matt, Mitch and Steven Overby, Jonna Lynn Underwood, and Marie Wangerin and their families, including seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Magna Sondeno. John is also survived by two sisters, Gertrude Christiansen of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Dorothy Conger and her husband Ray, of Detroit Lakes, Minn.
