Emma J. Dykstra

CARMICHAEL, Calif. – Emma J. Lockamy Dykstra, 81, formerly of Columbus, Mont., died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, in Carmichael.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at East Lawn Memorial Park in Sacramento. Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home of Roseville is in charge.

David Edward ‘Red’ Deckert

GLENDIVE – David Edward “Red” Deckert, age 60, of Glendive, passed away on Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at Deaconess Billings Clinic.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Word of Life Fellowship and Outreach Center in Glendive, with Pastor Larry Phalen officiating. Interment was in the Dawson Memorial cemetery. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.

Dave was born on Sept. 8, 1941, in Glendive, the son of Edward and Opal (Meade) Deckert. He was raised and educated in Richey, and graduated from Richey High School in 1959. He attended college in Omaha, Neb., and then returned to Glendive, where he worked at various jobs, including the Glendive Coke Plant, Haliburton, the Montana Highway Department and Cenex Transportation. He also farmed with his father. Dave was the owner and operator of Deckert Trucking at the time of his death. Dave married Kathleen “Kathie” Sturgis on April 22, 1968, in Glendive.

Dave loved spending his vacations with his family, fishing and camping at Fort Peck each summer and going on motorcycle rides. He enjoyed farming his dad’s farm located near Richey.

Dave was preceded in death by his father and an infant sister.

Survivors include his wife, Kathie Deckert of Glendive; four sons, David Deckert of Green Bay, Wis., Clinton Deckert of Gillette, Wyo., Kevin Deckert of Billings and Kyle Deckert of the family home in Glendive; his mother, Opal Deckert of Glendive; two brothers, Steve Deckert and Sam Deckert, both of Glendive; four grandchildren, Dexter and Wilmer of Texas and Zachery and Corina of Wyoming; numerous nieces and nephews.

Kenneth L. Kochel

MILES CITY – Kenneth L. Kochel, 78, of Miles City, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, of emphysema and cancer.

Visitation will begin Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Stevenson & Sons. Interment will follow in the Eastern Montana Veteran cemetery.

Anita A. Briese

WILSALL – Anita A. Briese, 62, of Wilsall, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, of cancer.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Holbrook United Methodist Church in Livingston. Graveside committal and interment of cremated remains will take place at a later date in Fort Benton. Franzen-Davis Funeral Home of Livingston is in charge.

Robert Royce Svee

SALT LAKE CITY – Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, Robert Royce Svee, 67, passed away Nov. 9, 2001 in Salt Lake City, Utah, from respiratory failure.

He was born June 14, 1934, in Laurel, Mont., to Sigvart and Beatrice (Lund) Svee. Bob grew up and was graduated from high school in Columbus, Mont. He excelled in sports and won a football scholarship to Montana State College in Bozeman. He served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Walker where he trained as a radar technician.

Bob married Gayna Garton in 1957 (later divorced) and married Barbara Cushing in 1980. He was a dedicated and well-respected employee with the FAA for nearly 40 years as an electronics technician and in management. He retired in 1990, and later returned with an FAA contractor until 1995. He will be remembered by his many friends and coworkers. During this time, he earned a BS degree in computer science at Westminster College.

Bob enjoyed the outdoors with a special love for boating, especially at Lake Powell. He led a full life with no regrets. He had a talent for making people feel at east with his quiet aura and non-judgmental attitude towards all with whom he came in contact.

Bob is survived by his wife, Barbara; son, Rob (Lynn); daughters, Nicole (Larry) Welch, Suzanne (David) Strong, Michele (Shawn) Doxey, Cynthie Cushing (David Spotts); 10 grandchildren, Paige, Jessen, Charlsey, Thomas, Colton, Alex, Caitlin, Kierstin, Quinn, Brianna; sister, Shirley (Oscar) Carlson; brothers, Gary (Diane) and Rod (Pat); sister-in-law, Judy and 12 nephews and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jerry.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 E. 1300 S., where friends may call one hour prior to services. Innichement will follow in Sandy, Utah, Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 E. 10600 S.

Lois Berg

Lois Berg, 86, beloved mother, died peacefully at Deaconess Hospital on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, with her children Joy, Patty and Ken at her bedside.

She was born Aug. 5, 1915, in Glendive, to Myrl and Blanch Gaynor.

Lois attended what is now MSU in Billings, graduated with a teaching degree and taught in a one-room schoolhouse at Intake, Mont., for two years. On May 21, 1936, she married E.H. “Bud” Berg, who preceded her in death in October 1993. They experienced 57 years of very happy and fulfilling times.

She is survived by her three children, Joy (Dale) Murphy, Ken (Jeanette) Berg and Patty Beeman. She has six grandchildren, Kim, Brett, Mark, Julie, Lisa and Eric, who all adored her immensely. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.

Mom, you were loved by so many and you touched so many lives. You were truly a unique person.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Grace United Methodist Church. Memorial may be made to Grace United Methodist Church.

Michelotti-Sawyers has charge of arrangements.

IdaBelle “Bea” Whiting

IdaBelle "Bea" Whiting died Nov. 7, 2001, at St. John's Lutheran Home after a long illness. She was born in Buffalo, Wyo., on July 7, 1919, to Thurman and Ruby Gossett.

She worked for a time as a nursing assistant but most of her life she was a homemaker. She had a happy, optimistic frame of mind and a ready laugh that drew people to her. On Dec. 20, 1966, she married Marshall Whiting in Denver, Colo.

She is survived by her husband, Marshall Whiting of Billings; a daughter, Priscilla Schraudner of Billings; a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Karan Sherman of Sheridan, Wyo.; two sisters, Claire Crews of Billings; and Lucille Riggle of Eagle, Colo.; and a niece who was more like another daughter, Laura Rist of Billings.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Nursing Home.

Jake Neufeld

Larslan, Mont. – Jake Neufeld, 90, of Larslan, died Nov. 8, 2001, at his home of natural causes.

Jake was born Sept. 28, 1911, in Omsk, Siberia, Russia. He immigrated to Canada in 1914 and came to the Larslan area in 1916, where his parents homesteaded. They lived their entire life there. They farmed and ranched and raised their family on their place. He married Ida Richert at Larslan on June 4, 1932. She died Feb. 20, 1997.

Jake dedicated his life to the Lord. He loved woodwork and construction of buildings. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping. He loved people and young people. Jake was a big sports fan for Lustre boys and girls. He was a lifelong member of the Mennonite Brethren Church.

Jake was active in fundraising efforts for the Glasgow area hospital. He was a member of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, was President of Lukes 100 and of the Church Council of the M.B. Church of Larslan, a position he held for 30 years. He served four terms on the board of the Lustre Bible Academy and is a past board member of the Valley County ASCS.

Jake is survived by two sons: Delford G. (Norma) Neufeld of Billings, Roy D. (Carol) Neufeld of Larslan; two daughters: Lois (Harold) Dyck of Wolf Point, Karen (Les) Watterud of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter-in-law Leona Neufeld of Billings; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers: John Neufeld of Yuma, Ariz., Art Neufeld of Kalispell and a sister Emily Peters of Scottsdale, Ariz.

Jake was preceded in death by his wife Ida; one grandchild Jason; brothers: Frank and Gus and sisters Katie Edwards and Anna Peters.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the Lustre Mennonite Brethren Church in Lustre with Pasor J. Epp officiating. Interment at the Lustre Mennonite Brethren cemetery. Bell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Carl M. Johnson

Carl M. Johnson, 81 of Billings, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at Western Manor Nursing Home.

The son of Ake and Jennie Johnson, Carl was born Aug. 30, 1920, in Chicago, Ill. He was the youngest of seven children.

A Navy veteran, Carl served aboard ship during WWII. Following the service he worked 29 years as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service. He married Doris M. Dickover on March 17, 1962, in Whittier, Calif. Carl enjoyed fishing, working crossword puzzles and time spent with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Doris in 1967 and step-daughter Winifred Worcester in 1995 as well as his parents and brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his step-daughter Diane Senger and husband Richard of Billings; step-son Michael Dickover and wife Andrienne Morton of Anderson Island, Wash.; son-in-law Ray Worcester of Everett, Wash.; eight grandchildren: Lisa Hilderbrand and her husband Doug, Michael Dickover, Michele Dickover, Douglas Dickover, Nicholas Senger and his wife Brenda, Steven Senger and his wife Cari, Peter Senger and his wife Heather, and Doris Sonntag and her husband David, and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, in the Abbey View Memorial Park Chapel, Seattle, Wash.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society.

Evelyn Olsen

Evelyn Lena Epple Gilbert Olsen passed away Oct. 5, 2001, as a result of complications from surgery for a broken hip. She had enjoyed a long and healthy life until shortly before her death. Evie had been a resident of The Springs of East Mesa Retirement Apartment Complex for four years. Services were held in Mesa, Ariz., on Oct. 9. She will be buried in the Cassel cemetery in Delano, Minn., next to her husband, James Gilbert, and near many other members of the Epple family who have preceded her in death.

Evelyn was born in Montrose, Minn., on Feb. 11, 1909, the fourth of seven children born to William and Minnie Epple. At the age of 28, she enrolled in nursing training at the Billings Deaconess Hospital and became a registered nurse. Immediately following graduation, Dr. Roy Morledge hired her, and she worked for him for many years. Her nursing career continued as a private duty nurse in the Billings hospitals and at private homes. On Jan. 6, 1940, Evelyn married James A. Gilbert, who taught school in Billings for 40 years. Evelyn and Jim raised two daughters, Nancy and Kathy. Soon after retirement, in 1971, the couple moved to Mesa, Ariz., where they lived happily for nine years prior to Jim’s death in 1980. Evelyn subsequently married Marlin Olsen and they enjoyed four years prior to his death in 1986.

In Billings, Evelyn and Jim were members of the First Methodist Church, Eastern Star, and the Masons. They were also active in teachers’ groups, bridge clubs, sewing club, and their children’s activities. In Arizona, Evelyn (and Jim) enjoyed square dancing, swimming, hiking, bridge, traveling, and they were members of the Velda Rose Methodist Church.

Survivors of Evelyn include: Nancy and Robert Miller, daughter and husband, Denver, Colo.;Jeff Vasilion, grandson, Denver, Colo.; Kathleen and Billy Bond, daughter and husband, Alamosa, Colo.; Lindsey and Erin Powis, granddaughter and husband, Chandler, Ariz.; Whitney Bond, granddaughter, Alamosa, Colo.; Donald and Delores Epple, brother and wife, Montrose, Minn.;

In addition to her two husbands, Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Ellen and Mildred; and brothers, Clarence, Ray, and Herb.

Memorial contributions, in Evelyn’s memory, may be made to the Velda Rose Methodist Church, 5540 East Main Street, Mesa, AZ 85205, or the Montrose Methodist Church, Montrose, MN 55363.

Charles Leroy “Roy” Lane

LAVINA – Charles LeRoy “Roy” Lane, 73, of Lavina, Mont., died of respiratory problems on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at Deaconess Billings Clinic.

Roy was born at Ryegate, Mont., May 22, 1928, to Charles L. and Adah (Bakken) Lane. He attended grade school in Cushman and graduated from Lavina High School in 1946. He served in the Navy and worked several jobs in the Cushman, Lavina area.

He united in marriage to Myrtle Overgard on Jan. 9, 1954. They ranched at Cushman until January of 1971. They then purchased the Conoco Service Station and Bulk Plant in Lavina, which they operated that until selling and retiring in July of 1995.

LeRoy was very active in the community. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church, the Lavina EMT’s and the Lavina volunteer fire department. He spent many hours working on fire equipment and at the fire hall. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, and remodeling their home

LeRoy is survived by his wife Myrtle of 47 years; daughter Joyce (Karl) Shammel of Billings; daughter-in-law, Laura (Ron) Beyl of White Sulphur Springs, Mont.; three special grandchildren, Kayla and Kelsey Shammel and Myles Beyl; two sisters, Marjorie Blankenbaker and Lois (Bob) Hoagland, both of Billings and sister-in-law, Ethel (Andy) Sampson of Columbia Falls and Betty (Bill) Heilig of Belt. Many nieces, nephews and cousins. Roy was preceded in death by his parents and his son Roger in 1991.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the Lavina Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Lavina cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Lavina Volunteer Fire Department, Box 65 Lavina, MT 59046 or charity of choice.
