James Andrew Kastelitz

MISSOULA – Jim Kastelitz, 56, of Missoula, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at St. Patrick’s Hospital due to heart failure.

Jim was born on April 11, 1945, in Billings to John and Rose “Mamie” (Salono) Kastelitz of Red Lodge. He was raised in Red Lodge where he attended St. Agnes Catholic School through the eighth grade. He graduated from Red Lodge High School in 1963. He then left for Missoula, where he attended the University of Montana, beginning a lifelong passion for the city and the university. Jim played freshman basketball for the 1963-64 Golden Cubs and was active member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

After graduating with a BS in business administration in 1967, he moved to Everett, Wash., to work for GTE. There he met his wife Annette of Pelican Rapids, Minn. The two were married July 26, 1969, in Red Lodge and resided for the next eight years in Washington, where both of their sons were born.

In 1977, the family returned to Jim’s beloved Montana, placing roots in Billings for the next 13 years. While in Billings, Jim was co-owner of Tri-Jack Manufacturing and was deeply involved in the community. He was a member of the Elks Club, Rotary Club and Knights of Columbus. He also spent countless hours coaching his sons in baseball, basketball and football.

In 1990, after a short stay in Helena, Jim and the family settled in Missoula and made the city their home. While in Missoula, Jim worked as a directory advertising consultant for Qwest Dex. Once again, he became heavily involved in the community. He was an avid Grizzly fan and an active member of the Grizzly Athletic Association, where he served several terms on the Missoula GAA Board of Directors; he was a member of the GAA Associates State Board of Directors and the National Board of Advisors for Grizzly Athletics.

He was also a member of Sentinel Kiwanis, the Missoula Country Club and the Worden’s Market morning coffee group. Many an evening he could be found on the golf course, running up the Rattlesnake, visiting with friends at the Stocks or taking long walks with his wife through their neighborhood. After their sons left home, Jim and Annette spent their time together enjoying their many friends and relatives. They also loved traveling to spend time with their sons and daughters-in-law.

Survivors include his wife, Annette of Missoula; son Greg and his wife Wendy Kastelitz of Beaverton, Ore., son Scott and his wife Kelly Kastelitz of Kirkland, Wash.; father John Kastelitz of Red Lodge; brother Tom and his wife Rosina Kastelitz of Red Lodge and their children Brad, Kyle and Rhett; and an amazing cadre of friends and family.

Vigil Service will be held at Garden City Funeral Home Friday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be held at Christ the King Catholic Parish Saturday, Nov. 10, at 10:30 a.m. Internment will be Tuesday. Nov. 13, in Red Lodge at 10:30 a.m. with a reception to follow at St. Agnes Catholic Church.

Jennie Bee Losinski

BEACH, N.D. – Jennie Bee Losinski, 84, formerly of Wibaux, Mont., died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, in Beach.

Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Wibaux. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Wibaux. Rite of Committal will be in the Wibaux cemetery.

John Vernon Riffe

John Vernon Riffe, 50, of Billings, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at his home. The son of Estes Vernon and Joan Riffe, John was born May 18, 1951, in Anderson S.C. John had received his master’s degree from the School of Library Science at the University of South Florida.

He had worked 15 years at the Public Library in Pueblo, Colo., before coming to Billings in 1994 to serve as head of the Technical Processing Department for Billings Parmly Library.

John married Noreen Stringfellow in Pueblo, Colo., March 2, 1985.

He was a member of the Teamsters Union, International Brotherhood of Magicians, Montana Library Association and the Arkansas Valley Audubon. John taught Internet classes for SRDA Seniors and enjoyed acting and drama. He loved Jimmy Buffet, Mel Torme, movie trivia and was an avid University of Florida Gator’s fan.

Survivors include his wife Noreen of Pueblo; mother and stepfather, Joan and Curtis Culver of Tampa, Fla., brother George (Linda) Riffe of Salt Lake City, sister Connie (Rich) Croasdaile of Worland Hills, Ohio; two stepsisters, Susie (Rodger) Gerstung of Orlando, Fla., Rene (Larry) Lynch of Tallahassee, Fla.; a stepbrother, Chuck Culver of Johnson City, Tenn.; sister and brother-in-law, Merry (Rob) Martin; and mother-in-law, Wilma Stringfellow of Pueblo. He was preceded in death by his father Estes Riffe and brother Mark Steven Riffe.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary.

Memorials may be made to the Billings Parmly Library.

Evelyn Simmons

FAIRVIEW – Evelyn Simmons, 86, of Fairview, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at the Roosevelt Memorial Medical Center in Culbertson.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at Fairview Alliance Church. Interment will be in the Fairview cemetery. Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney is in charge.

John Wesley Hargrove

At the age of 63, John “Wesley” Hargrove, of Billings, died peacefully at Western Manor Nursing Home on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001. Wesley was born in Billings, April 21, 1938, the son of John and Annie May (Campbell) Hargrove. He grew up in the Huntley and Billings area.

Wesley was active in Growth Thru Art, the Billings Activity Program, and was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church. He loved music and dancing and was an avid fan of Batman. Wesley will be greatly missed by all his family and many friends who supported in all of his endeavors.

He is survived by his sister, JoAnn and her husband Cal Murray of Belgrade; brother Dick Hargrove and his wife Nancy; aunt Dema Cooper; cousin Thelma Cooper, all of Helena; cousin Robert Cooper of Billings; two nephews, Mitch and Dan Murray; one niece, Bonnie Linseth, as well as numerous cousins.

His parents preceded Wesley in death.

Funeral services for Wesley will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, with interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Dahl Funeral & Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Billings Activities Program or Growth Thru Art or the Mount Olive Lutheran Church.

Edward ‘Ed’ Pilster

ALZADA – Edward “Ed” Pilster, 93, of Alzada, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, in Spearfish.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 17, at the Belle Fourche Congregational Church in Belle Fourche, S.D. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, at the Bell Fourche Congregational Church. Interment will follow in the Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Broadus is in charge.

Dorothy Minette

LIVINGSTON – Dorothy G. “Dottie” Minette, 72, died at Livingston Health & Rehab Center on Friday, Dec. 14, 2001.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home, 118 N. 3rd St. in Livingston. Graveside committal and burial of the cremated remains will follow in Mountain View cemetery.

Don W. McManus

The patriarch of our family, Don W. McManus, went home to the Lord on Dec. 14, 2001, after a lingering illness. He died as he wished–at home with his family around him.

Don was born on a homestead near Molt on Oct. 19. 1917, to Charles J. and Loretta (Ryan) McManus. The family moved to Laurel in 1922 and Don attended schools in Laurel and Billings. He graduated from Laurel High School in 1937. He built and operated the Cabin Supper Club east of Laurel from 1939 to 1942, and then he enlisted in the Army. Don served his country in China, Burma and India. He was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal in 1945.

On May 25, 1947, Don married Rosemary Hart, his favorite nurse, in Laurel. They lived in Laurel and Bridger and then moved to Great Falls where Don sold kitchen cabinets. In 1951 Don and Rosemary moved to Billings and started a home improvement company. He merged with lnsul Fibre Company and was manager and co-owner with his brother, Charles E. McManus, until his retirement in 1985. Don had a gift for design; he planned, built and remodeled many kitchens throughout the area.

Don became the Charter President of Riverside Optimist Club in 1960; he was very proud of his 40 years of perfect attendance. he held various club and district offices. He was instrumental in building the Optimist Park. Don was a long time member of Little Flower Parish and served on its finance committee for many years.

Don’s loves were his family, playing pool, playing cards, watching baseball, fishing, his Church and his Optimist youth work. Don had a quick wit and was always ready with a good joke. He loved to dance and enjoyed life. In recent years, he spent much of his time growing beautiful roses and keeping the neighborhood birds well fed.

He is survived by his wife, Rosemary; their six children and their families: Debra and Dennis Wacker of Hardin, Dania McManus of Los Angeles and Hawaii, Patrick and Julie McManus of Winter Park, Florida, Mary Ward of Silesia, Tim McManus of Billings, and Matt and Monica McManus of Sparks, Nev.; his nine grandchildren and their families: Toby (Kim) Wacker, Melissa (Dave) Pitsch, Hal (Janice) Ward Jr., Josh Ward, Shane Ward, Jason (Natasha) McManus, Christina Ard, and Mason and Megan McManus. He was also blessed with 11 great-grandchildren: Ashley, Abbey and Klay Wacker, Davey and Darbey Pitsch, Hal MF Ward III, Sean, Justin and Alicia Ard, Jason Jr. and Ariana McManus. He is also survived by his brother Harold P. McManus of Laurel and his sister, Thelma Schreifels of Mt. Vernon, Wash.. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Charles E. McManus and sisters, Irene Moffet and Luella Story.

The family would like to thank Dr. Solomon and the staff at the VA Clinic, Dr. Bryon Busch and Big Sky Hospice.

A Vigil Service for Don will be 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, at the Dahl Funeral Chapel. A Funeral Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Little Flower Catholic Parish. Interment is in Holy Cross cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Neil McManus Fund, c/o Riverside Optimist Club, 2012 Forest Park Drive, Billings, MT 59102, or to Little Flower Church, or to the Big Sky Hospice.

Olga C. Allen

Olga C. Allen, 91, of Billings, passed away Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at Western Manor. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Rimrock Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Mountview cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church or to charity of choice.

Olga was born April 8, 1910, in Sterling, Colo., the daughter of Affie Reuben and Eva Jones Ferguson. She came to Billings in 1912 with her parents and attended Senior High School and later received a teachers degree from Eastern Montana College. Olga taught school for one year at Rothimay and returned to Billings where she married Denzil Wayne Allen on June 14, 1930. She had worked as a supervisor for Shaklee for fifteen years.

Olga was a member of the Rimrock Baptist Church, Edna Hedges Chapter of Eastern Star, where she served as Past Worthy Matron in 1971. She was also a member of the Moss Agate Chapter of OES, the White Shrine and the Federation Womens Club.

Survivors include three daughters: Eva Jeanne (Al) Dymersky of Billings, Honey Jo Popp of Billings and Coralee (Jim) Hicks of Columbus; two sons, Donald (Judy) Allen of Billings and Bradford Allen of Helena; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She has been preceded in death by her husband in 1990 and two sisters.

Arrangements are by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Delores Schuppe

Delores Jane Schuppe, 79, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, in the Billings Valley Health Care Center.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at the Little Big Horn National cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin is in charge.

Roland Wilson

PLENTYWOOD – Funeral services for Roland Wilson will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17. Pastor Larry Pierson will officiate at the service at the First Congregational Church in Plentywood. Public Masonic Rites will conclude the service at the church; interment will be in Plentywood cemetery. Roland, 97, died Thursday afternoon at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood, where he had been a resident since June.

Clarence Roland Wilson was born July 12, 1904, at Walbach, Neb., the son of Herman and Ida (Bengston) Wilson. In 1912, the family moved to Noonan, N.D., where Roland completed 8th grade. He graduated from High School in Wadena, Minn., in 1922, and worked in the Farmers State Bank in Noonan until 1924. He married Gertrude O. Cook, Sept. 12, 1925, in Noonan. Roland moved to Medicine Lake, Mont., in the spring of 1925 to work at the Markuson & Epler Ford dealership, beginning a 52 year career with the Ford Motor Company. On Sept. 15, 1931, Roland and Gertrude moved to Plentywood, where he started work for Karlson Motor Company, a new Ford Dealership. In 1935, Roland and a partner took over the business. Roland and several close friends matched tossed coins to determine who would buy coffee ... Roland seldom lost, and their “gang” became a fixture in the coffee shops for many years. He was a member of the Congregational Church, the Plentywood Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, (where he was recognized with the KCCH. honorific) and of Algeria Temple of the Shrine. They moved to the Montana Pioneer Manor in 1991; and as Gertrude’s health failed, Roland devoted his life to caring for her until her death Nov. 2, 2000.

Roland is survived by two daughters, Jean West and Yvonne Wilson, and by a daughter-in-law, Carol Wilson, all of Plentywood; by 10 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Besides his parents and wife, Roland was preceded in death by his son, Dr. Robert Wilson; three grandchildren, John West, Scott Wilson, and Peggy Haskin; and by three sisters, Ruth, Edith, and Tillie; and two brothers, Edgar and Homer.

Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood has charge of arrangements.

Alfred Whistling Elk, Jr.

CROW AGENCY – Alfred Whistling Elk, Jr., 46, of Lame Deer, died Dec. 11, 2001, in the Crow Agency IHS Hospital.

He was born Aug. 17, 1955, in Crow Agency a son of Alfred and June Ant Whistling Elk, Sr. He received his education in the Lame Deer area.

Survivors include five sisters: Crystal Stanfield of Arizona, Newta Manley, Lillian Three Fingers, Mary Ann and Mae Whistling Elk of Lame Deer; two brothers, Cecil Wolf Roads of Oregon and Gilbert White Dirt of Muddy Creek; three nephews who he raised: Jason (Gwen) and children Michelle of Arizona and Cheyenne of Oregon, Walter and children Randall, Rebekah, Newta and Gary of Lame Deer, Timothy (Rachel) and children Tawny of Bozeman, TraJan, TaRae, Travis, T.J., TraJanna, Tandon and Tanyon of Lame Deer; nephews, Miles Brian, LenRay Tall Bull and niece Eva Whistling Elk of Lame Deer.

Wake services will be held 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, in the Lame Deer Catholic Church Social Room. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Church. Interment will follow in the Lame Deer cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.
