Josephine Fredlund

RED LODGE – Josephine Fredlund passed from this earth in the early morning hours of June 22, 2001, at the Beartooth Hospital Long Term Nursing Care Center in Red Lodge.

Her daughter Mitzi was by her side, asleep in a chair, after holding her hand all night.

Josephine was born Josephine Dorothy Chesarek on Valentine’s Day in 1909.

She was one of nine children (fourth child, first girl) born to John and Frances Chesarek, both Slovenian immigrants, in the town of Bearcreek.

Her father was a saloon owner who died in 1920, the year following Prohibition.

Her mother raised the nine children, partially with the financial help from the sale of homemade wine.

Josephine loved and respected her mother, but was against the bootlegging (as a matter of principle).

Josephine attended school in Bearcreek, played center on the girls basketball team, was confirmed in the Catholic Church in Red Lodge (“it looked like New York City!”) and graduated as the Bearcreek High School valedictorian.

She earned a teaching certificate from the college at Dillon and briefly attended college in San Francisco.

As a schoolteacher in Montana during the 1930s, she taught at one-room schools near Broadus and near Harlem.

Later she taught in the Chinook school district.

She was well-loved and a favorite of the kids.

In Chinook, she met Vern Fredlund, a handsome, sociable man with a twinkle in his eye, a Model-A and a good job at the Blaine County Abstract Company.

They were married on New Year’s Eve, 1940.

They had three kids and a solid, loyal marriage.

Following World War II, the family moved to Lewistown.

Then her husband took a job as a landman with an oil company, and they moved to Williston, N.D., in 1951.

Her Williston days, she said later, may have been the happiest days of her life, as all of her friends were happy, with lots of kids, and everyone was celebrating boom days and life at full tilt.

In 1964, she and her family moved to Tyler, Texas, driving and crying the whole way in a ’56 Ford.

But four years in Tyler showed them all that life only gets richer and more interesting as it goes on.

In 1968, following the North Slope oil discovery, they moved to Anchorage, Alaska.

In 1970, they moved to Billings, where they settled into an old home on Clark Avenue.

During her life, Josephine was a Camp Fire Girls leader, taught Sunday school and worked for the Anchorage Art Museum.

She was an excellent bridge player (earning many Master points).

She grew roses and large vegetable gardens and walked a mile and a half nearly every day, almost to the end.

In Billings, she was a faithful member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

She loved polka music, including the Louisiana version. And to dance.

Josephine outlived her husband, Vern, who died in 1990.

And she cried often at the loss of her daughter, Edwina, who died in 1992.

She is survived by her daughter, Mitzi Vorachek (husband Jim) of Red Lodge; her son John Fredlund (wife Bess), of Billings; and her four grandchildren, Laura Jo Vorachek of Madison, Wis., Joanna Vorachek of New York, N.Y., and Beau and Paige Fredlund of Billings.

She is also survived by two sisters, Mildred Harbolt of Chinook and Mary Austin of California; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

Memorials can be made to the Beartooth Hospital Foundation (Box 590, Red Lodge, MT 59068) or the Alberta Bair Theater Education Programs (Box 1556, Billings, MT 59103).

A memorial service will be held at the Calvary Episcopal Church at 9 N. Villard, Red Lodge, on Thursday, June 28, at 3 p.m.

Her ashes will be buried later this year, in sight of her “mama’s mountain,” in the Bearcreek cemetery.

John A. Olson

TWO DOT – Mr. John A. Olson, 69, of Two Dot, passed away Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, after a lengthy illness.

John was born March 3, 1932, in Harlowton, to the late William Richard and Ruth Virginia Hopkins Olson.

John was a retired farmer and rancher and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Memorial services for Mr. John A. Olson will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church, with Rev. Doug Thompson officiating.

John is survived by his wife, Daloris of Two Dot; three sons, Richard Olson of Harlowton, John Clay Olson of Two Dot and Cy Olson of Dayton, Wyo.; and one brother, Donald Olson of Helena; and sister, Helen Roma of San Martin, Calif.; and four grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Perkins Funeral Home of Harlowton is in charge of arrangements.

Agnes Jordis Arestad Quanbeck

Agnes Jordis Arestad Quanbeck died suddenly on Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at Deaconess Billings Clinic; she had lived at Mission Ridge for the last 3-1/2 years and in April, she had turned 88.

Born in Voss, Norway, she lived in Livingston and Norway during her first 10 years.

Then the family settled in Billings, where she graduated from Billings High School and matriculated to Eastern Montana Normal School for a two-year teaching certificate.

She returned to EMC to complete the bachelor’s degree later on.

Her first teaching position was in Westby, where she met her husband Irving.

They proceeded to live in Troy, Sweet Grass and Brady before moving to Monroe, Wash. In 1943, they returned to Billings for good.

While her children were young, Agnes took on roles as Sunday school superintendent and PTA president, sang in church choirs and participated in numerous church organizations.

When she returned to teach, it was at Broadwater School, where she remained until retirement.

Her favorite recollection there was teaching her third-grade students how to do plays with hand puppets; every year they performed on one of the local TV programs.

During those years, she happily joined the charter Billings Symphony, where she played violin for a number of years, performed and led programs for the Scandinavian night at the Festival of Nations, was active in the Sons of Norway and Delta Kappa Gamma.

Later, she was active in the Retired Teachers Group.

Teaching afforded Agnes and Irving the opportunity of travel.

They covered most of the continental U.S., traveled to Canada numerous times, visited in Norway and took additional trips to Alaska, Central and South America.

Agnes is survived by her brother, O.B. Arestad of Tucson, Ariz.; her daughter, Judy (Jaq) Quanbeck of Billings; her son, Duane Quanbeck and his wife Marie of Newton, Iowa; her granddaughter Kari of Los Angeles; and her grandson Arne, a computer student at Waldorf College in Iowa.

Her husband Irving preceded her in death, as did her mother and father, Oline and John Arestad, as well as her brother, Erling Arestad.

Visitation will be held at Cremation or Funeral Gallery on Sunday, July 1, from 6 to 7 p.m.

The funeral will be at First English Lutheran Church on Monday at 10 a.m., with internment to follow at Sunset Gardens.

Memorials may be made to First English Lutheran Church, St. John’s Lutheran Ministries or the Billings Symphony.
