Ila Mae Tolliver

Ila Mae Tolliver, 93, who spent most of her life in Billings, died Jan. 1, 2008, at Valley Healthcare Center.

She was born March 13, 1914, in Broadhead, Wis.

She grew up on a farm 60 miles from Bismarck, N.D., and taught school in North Dakota.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L. Tolliver.

Survivors include sons, Charles L. Tolliver Jr. and Kenneth D. Tolliver; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 4 at St. Patrick’s Co-Cathedral. Committal was in Mountview cemetery.

Arrangements were in the care of Dahl Funeral Chapel.

Kathleen H. Schweitzer
(September 24, 1927 - August 21, 2011)

Kathleen (Kay) Helen Schweitzer of Helena, Montana died from an accident on August 21, 2011 at the age of 83.

Ms. Schweitzer was born on September 24, 1927 on a farm near Box Elder, Montana the fourth of five children to Michael and Hannah McKernan.

Michael and Hannah moved to America from Ireland in the early 1900’s.

In addition to Kay, their children were Michael McKernan, deceased; Mary Brady, deceased; Nora Nelson and Patricia Warhank.

In 1946, Kay married Adam Schweitzer in a double wedding with her sister Patricia, who married Adam’s good friend Raymond Warhank.

Patty and Kay met the young men at post-World War II dance on the Hi-Line.

After their marriage, Kay and Adam managed the Schweitzer family farm near Gildford, Montana before moving to Geyser, Montana in 1954.

Kay played an active part in managing the family farm, especially since the 1970’s when the family built the internationally renowned Schweitzer Simmentals.

Schweitzer Simmentals produced the first Simmental calf in the United States in 1968, and held the first production Simmental Sale.

Schweitzer Simmentals produced award winning Polled Fullboods.

The Schweitzer Simmental cattle won numerous awards, including: Grand Champion with a bull named Montana in Argentina, and Grand Champions in Europe, Australia, and Mexico.

Her final show was in Fort Worth, TX where she won the title of World Championship Bull.

Kay was the driving force behind Schweitzer Simmentals; everyone knew that Kay was the one who marketed, groomed, and trained the cattle.

Kay also became passionate over world and political events.

She organized a group of women to protest the low price of wheat in Great Falls, Montana.

Later, many of these same women became the founding members of Women Involved in Farm Economics (WIFE).

She organized a protest to the boycotting of eating meat movement, also held in Great Falls.

During the early 70’s, she wrote countless letters to Montana’s legislators regarding her political beliefs.

She even tried acting when she played Eleanor Roosevelt for a play about First Ladies produced by the Flathead Women’s Democratic organization.

She became active with the Hibernian Women’s organization in Helena, Montana.

Kay was a devout Catholic.

She was the coordinator for mass at Waterford Retirement facility for the past several years.

In her later years, she enjoyed world travel to countries such as Canada, Ireland, Scotland, Australia, Mexico, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, and Saudi Arabia.

Kay was proud that all six of her children attended college and pursued successful careers as doctors, real-estate agents, farmer, rancher, consultants, and governor.

Kay is survived by her sisters Nora Nelson from Havre and Pat Warhank from Rudyard; her children Darwin (Sharon), OR; Warren (Ingela), CA; Mike (Jolyn), Billings, Montana; Brian (Nancy) Helena, Montana; Walter (Cindy), Helena, Montana; and Mary, OH; 12 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Adam, 2 siblings and one grandchild.

A rosary is planned for 6 p.m. on August 31, 2011 at the Retz Funeral Home in Helena.

A funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. on September 1st at the Cathedral of St. Helena in Helena, MT.

She will be buried next to her husband at 4 p.m. on September 1 in Highland cemetery, Havre.

Donations may be made to her grandson’s Beau’s Catholic order, the Society of our Lady of Most Holy Trinity (SOLT) at PO Box 149 Robstown, TX 78380.

Clarence Joseph Hirst, Sr.

Clarence "Boze" Hirst, of Heart Butte, 82, a World War II Army Veteran, died April 16 at the Browning Hospital from complications of diabetes.

Rosary was Friday, April 18 at 7 p.m. at the Heart Butte Community Center.

Funeral services were 11 a.m. Saturday, April 19 at St. Ann's Parish in Heart Butte, with burial with military honors at Lakeview cemetery in Valier.

Whitted Funeral Chapel of Shelby is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Clarence was born at the family home in Blackfoot, Mont. October 2, 1920.

He attended elementary schools in Blackfoot and Browning and high school at Pierre Indian School in South Dakota.

Clarence served in the Army from 1941 to 1945, participating in the North African Campaign, where he was wounded in action, and in Europe.

As a young man, Clarence worked on a construction crew building the Logan Pass road.

He also worked on the Civilian Conservation Corp. Prior to joining the Army in 1941.

After the war, Clarence returned home and began ranching.

In March 1946, he married Minnie Rutherford. They had eight children.

Clarence worked at many jobs and occupations during his lifetime; he worked at the Heart Butte School, the Community Action Program in Browning and Sanitation Department of Indian Health Service.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Minnie, of Heart Butte; four daughters, Margie Fisher of Meriweather, Linda Hirst of Browning, Karen Woldstad of Birch Creek and Cathy Bird of Bemidji, Minn.; four sons; Clarence "Bimbo" Hirst, Jr. of Badger Creek, Mike Hirst of Dickinson, N.D., Ron Hirst of Ashland, and William "Charlie" Hirst of Valier; twenty-one grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Al and Maggie Hirst, his sister, Frances Thompson, and brother, Jack Hirst.

NICK ASHBY

GILLETTE, Wyo. - Nick Ray Ashby, 35, of Gillette, Wyo., died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at a Campbell County hospital.

A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church of Gillette with the Rev. Chad Brucklacher officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.

Nick Ashby was born on Aug. 31, 1967, in Havre to Rita Doney, and later adopted by George Ashby Sr. He was raised and educated in Gillette, Wyo.

Nick's love for competitive motocross led him to founding Powder Basin Motocross, where he also started and developed the track. He also developed the initial Powder River Basin Methane drives, which were used as a template for all others.

Nick was a devoted husband and father. He and his wife, Deana, loved watching and supporting their girls in basketball. Watching Looney Toons and playing with their dog, Duke, was a special time for Nick and his girls.

Nick enjoyed fishing, hunting, and many outdoor activities. He was a great cook and liked to tinker with electronics. He was spiritual, had a great sense of humor, and was always there for his friends.

Nick was preceded in death by his mother, Rita, and his grandparents.

Survivors include his wife, Deana Ashby of Gillette, Wyo.; daughters, Paige and Kaycee Ashby of Gillette, Wyo.; brothers, George Ashby Jr. of Rawlins, Wyo., and Roy Cochran of Montana; sister, Gina Waters of Fort Worth, Texas; father, George Ashby Sr. of Rawlins, Wyo.; biological father, Lyle Cochran of Montana; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Donations to benefit Nick's daughters may be sent to the family in care of Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home at 210 W. 5th St., Gillette, WY 82716.

Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.

Curtis Wayne Smith

Curtis Wayne Smith, 58, of Browning, a radiology administrator, died of a heart attack Friday, April 18, 2003 at his home.

His funeral was 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, at the Methodist Church in Browning, with cremation to follow.

Day Family Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Beth A. Smith; daughters Ashley Samora of Pocatello, Idaho, Lindsey Smith of Cleveland, Minn., and Christine Ramirez of Dallas; a son Micah Smith of Pocatello; sisters Diana Fields of Kevin, Alma Faye Chippewa of Great Falls, Pauline Sure Chief, Carol Douglas, Rosemary Huston and Bonnie Sue Wagner, all of Browning, and Freda Stone of Cut Bank; brothers Kenneth Still Smoking and Lyle MacDonald, of Browning, Ivan MacDonald of Parker, Ariz., James McDonald of Missoula and Jeffrey McDonald of Great Falls; and six grandchildren.
