THOMAS BURNS

Thomas Francis Burns, 83, a former U.S. Marine pilot and retired Hereford breeder and rancher, died on Friday, April 11, 2003, at his home in Chinook of natural causes.

A memorial service will be May 24 at 2 p.m. at the Kuper Memorial cemetery.

Thomas was born at the family ranch near Lohman on Jan. 28, 1920, and graduated from Chinook High School in 1938. He attended Montana State College in Bozeman in 1942 and earned a bachelor of science degree in botany and bacteriology.

Thomas married Ethel Graybill of Great Falls in May of 1943. He was commissioned in the U.S. Marine Corp in 1943, where he served as a flight instructor and spent time in the Philippines and China as a fighter pilot. He was honorably discharged as a captain in 1945.

After returning from the service, Thomas spent his life on the Clear Creek Hereford Ranch, successfully raising purebred Herefords and grass and alfalfa seed production. He was active in the Montana Stockgrowers Association, National Cattleman's Association, director of the Montana Seed Growers Association, supervisor of Blaine County Soil and Water Conservation District, director of General Agriculture Corp., Blaine County Farm Bureau, Northcentral Montana Land and Mineral Owners Association, executive board of Northern Montana College, Masonic Lodge, past Master, Shrine, American Legion, past commander, Chinook Chamber of Commerce and Chinook School Board.

Thomas retired in 1990 and moved to Kalispell, where he was involved with the Shrine Club and Soaring Society. He returned to Chinook in 2001.

Memorials are suggested to the Chinook Lodge #50 or the Shrine Hospital.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Harry L. and Hulda Burns; wife, Ethel Burns in 1989; and brother, Richard.

Survivors include his son, Thomas F. (Joan) Burns Jr. of Denver; daughter, Linda (Robert) Sharples of Chinook; sister, Harriet (William) Kuhr of Great Falls; six grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters.

Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home.

JOSEPH CECH

Joseph John Cech, 93, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at a his home in Havre of natural causes.

Cremation has taken place. A prayer vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. today and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Jude Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert D. Grosch officiating. Burial will follow at Highland cemetery. A fellowship will be held at the St. Jude Parish Center immediately following the graveside services.

Joe was born on April 12, 1910, in Browerville, Minn., to August and Annie (Stanafka) Cech. He came to Havre to work for the Great Northern Railway.

He married Leona L. Mapes on Dec. 22, 1930, at Havre and they made their home in Havre.

Joe was called for active duty the day World War II ended. He worked as a car foreman for the railroad.

Joe enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid walker. His greatest loves were his wife and family.

He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church, Railroad Retirees and the Knights of Columbus.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Leona on Sept. 30, 1990; brothers, John, Ed and Albert Cech; sister, Lucy Gerstenberger; granddaughters, Cheryl Reich and Caryle Nielsen Sligar.

Survivors include his daughters, Marcia (Tony) Malsam of Havre; Barbara (George) Nielsen of Spokane, Wash., Karen (Dick) Reich of Carson City, Nev., and Kathy (Mike) Belcourt of Big Sandy; sister, Adeline Shank of St. Cloud, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the St. Jude School Trust Fund, 634 Fourth St., Havre, MT 59501.

Services and arrangements are under the direction of Holland and Bonine Funeral Home.

CARROLL RUDOLPH

CHINOOK - Carroll Ray Rudolph, 79, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at a Chinook nursing home due to natural causes.

A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the American Lutheran Church with burial in the Kuper Memorial cemetery.

Carroll was born in Chester on Oct. 10, 1923, to Ray and Hazel (Ray) Rudolph. He was raised in Joplin and graduated from Joplin High School in 1943. He attended college at Northern Montana College in Havre for two years.

Carroll was a farmer and rancher all of his life. He and his brother Donald had Rudolph Brothers Registered Angus until 1987.

Carroll was retired for a year until he married Kathern Hall Lowry in 1988. They had rentals and attended many auctions in the area.

Carroll was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Survivors include his wife, Kathern Rudolph of Chinook; stepson, Dale Lowry of Montana; stepdaughters, Joan Mord of Havre and Kathy (Mike) Radavich of Great Falls; brothers, Donald (Shirley) Rudolph and Harley (Mary) Rudolph, all of Chester; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook.

Dr. Clayton M. Pederson

Dr. Clayton M. Pederson, longtime Optometrist at Cut Bank died of cancer Saturday, April 19, 2003 at the Pillars Hospice Home in Oakdale, Minn. He was 81 years old.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 25, at the Community United Methodist Church in Columbia Heights, Minn.

Interment will be at Fort Snelling National cemetery.

Dr. Pederson was born at Colgan, N.D., Feb. 9, 1922, of Christian and Olephine Pederson.

Dr. Pederson graduated from Jamestown School of Business in Jamestown, North Dakota, and took his pre-optometry studies at Jamestown College. He graduated from Los Angeles College of Optometry at UCLA in 1949.

During his 49 years of solo practice, he served on the Montana Board of Examiners in Optometry for six years, and as a member of both the Montana Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association.

Outside of Optometry, he served on the board of Directors for the Cut Bank Gas Company, and served two terms as a School Board trustee.

He also was an elder in the Presbyterian Church, and had life memberships in the Elks Lodge, and the VFW.

Dr Pederson was a World War II veteran who served with the 20th Air Force in the Pacific.

He retired from practice in 1998, and moved to White Bear Lake, Minn.

He enjoyed flying and soaring. He homebuilt and flew his own ultralite aircraft.

Music played an important part in his life, as he was a frequent concert attendee.

He liked jazz, and played the bass in sessions with other local jazz musicians.

He also loved Glacier Park, where he enjoyed camping with his family, and fly-fishing with his friends at Two Medicine.

He is survived by his wife Lois, his brother Ivan, his daughter Karen Seavey, Her husband Warren, granddaughters Helen and Carol, and his daughter Catherine Sando, her husband Glen, granddaughters Lynn and Sharon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lillian, and his brother Gordon.

The family would like memorials to be sent to the Pillars Hospice Home/HealthEast Foundation, 6025 Upper 35th Street, Oakdale, MN, 55102.

ALLAN LARSON

PEQUOT LAKES, Minn. - Allan "Whitey" Larson, 73, of Pequot Lakes, Minn., formerly of Havre, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at a retirement village in Brainerd, Minn.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Kline Funeral Home in Pine River, Minn. Friends may call an hour before the service. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Union cemetery in Bixby, Minn.

Larson was born on April 15, 1930, in Bixby, Minn., to Lauritz and Agnes (Petersen) Larsen.

Larson was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and lived in Havre from 1980 to 1996.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; an infant son; and brother, Warren.

Survivors include his daughter, Robin Van Kleeck of Pequot Lakes, Minn.; son, Karl Larson of Pequot Lakes; and three grandchildren.

Arrangements are by Kline Funeral Home of Pine River, Minn.

Charley Blackwolf Bremner

Charley Rose Blackwolf Bremner, infant, of Browning died May 19, 2003 at the Browning Hospital of premature birth.

Funeral has taken place with burial at Carlson cemetery.

Survivors include parents Jamie Blackwolf and George Bremner III of Browning, sister Lesley Jay Blackwolf of Browning, brothers John George Bremner of Ariz., and Harlan Blackwolf of Browning, grandparents Jim and Theresa Blackwolf, and Agnes Carlson.

He was preceded in death by a brother Michael John Blackwolf, grandparents George Sonny Bremner and Ellen Owen Bremner and Great-grandfather Joe Carlson.

Clyde 'Woody' Monroe

Former Cut Bank resident and World War II veteran Clyde "Woody" Monroe, 87, of 1615 9th St. So., died of natural causes Saturday, May 30, 2003 at Peace Hospice.

Graveside services with military honors are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Crown Hill cemetery in Cut Bank.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Schnider Funeral Home of Great Falls is handling arrangements.

Clyde was born March 3, 1916, in Greeley, Colo., to Lillie (Gordon) and Clyde P. Monroe, Sr.

He received his education in Colorado before moving to Valier.

After working for a farmer for a short time he went to work for Union Oil in Cut Bank.

Clyde started farming east of Cut Bank and planted his last crop at the age of 85.

He served in the Army during World War II in the South Pacific on Pelelieu Island.

He was on a PT boat when it was bombed and spent 24 hours in the water before being rescued by another boat.

He was one of two survivors from the bombing.

He spent time rehabilitating in hospitals in California and Utah before being discharged in 1946.

He was united in marriage to Lyda C. Thompson in Conrad, in 1952.

He was a member of the Cut Bank VFW, American Legion and the Montana Grain Growers Association.

His love was farming, gardening and fabricating metal to make life easier for his family and friends.

Clyde and Lyda didn't have any children but devoted time to their nieces and nephews.

Clyde was a great uncle and "grandpa" and will be missed by all.

Memorials are suggest to Peace Hospice or the Veterans Memorial in Great Falls.

He is survived by his wife Lyda C. Monroe of Great Falls; a brother; Raymond A. Monroe of Roseville, Calif.; sisters; Lillie D. Haynes of Eatonville, Wash., and JoAnn Blik of Aliso Viego, Calif.; and sisters-in-law; Pearl Chavez of Great Falls, and Edna Monroe of Greeley, Colo.

He is also survived by nieces Raye Jean Saar of Olympia, Wash., Willa Toft of Fort Worth, Texas, Carol Haverlandt of Ulm; 11 other nieces and nephews; 22 great-nieces and great-nephews and 11 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Clyde was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Florence M. Carlson, C. Eunice Monroe, Jessie B. Wood, and Elizabeth "Betty" Monroe; and brothers Chester F. Monroe and John O. Monroe.
