Jack M. Smith
(March 8, 1926 - July 8, 2011)

Life time Helena resident, Jack Maurice Smith, passed away on July 8 at St. Peter’s Hospital following a recent illness.

Jack was born on March 8, 1926 to Edith Grace German and Robley Smith and grew up in Helena’s 6th ward, attending Bryant School and graduating from Helena High School in 1943.

Jack served our country in the United States Army during World War II.

He fought in the Philippines and was a member of the Occupational Forces in Japan.

On September 11, 1948, Jack married Wanda Lucille Robertson in Malta, Montana.

From this union, 4 children were born, Sharon, Debra, Cindy and Brett.

Wanda passed away in April of 1979. Jack remarried on November 20, 1982 to Joyce Bailey Glineski, also of Helena.

As Jack always said, he was truly blessed in his life to have been loved by two amazing and wonderful women.

After his service in the military, Jack attended Carroll College and the University of Montana Missoula.

He then returned to Helena and opened the Tower Texaco service station on the corner of 11th and Roberts in 1950.

In 1965, he started Montana General Credit, a home based business.

Jack sold Tower Texaco in 1968 and then worked a short time at United Building Center before finishing his career with the State of Montana and retiring in 1978.

Jack and family had various rentals and did property remodels, including the conversion of the family’s restaurant, The Park Café, on Railroad Avenue into a 4-plex.

Jack’s family enjoyed ‘The Cabin’ they built on Canyon Ferry Lake, where together they spent years with both family and friends.

Using Jack’s extensive building expertise and carpentry skills, Jack and Joyce constructed their dream home on Canyon Ferry Road.

Jack always had a project to work on around the house; his “to-do” list was ever growing.

He also spent quality time with the 1943 Helena High reunion group, meeting each month at Perkins Restaurant.

Jack had many names in his life, including Son, Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Brother, Nephew, Uncle, Cousin, and Great Grandpa.

He was a strong, talented, gentle giant who always had a kind word and believed each day should be lived to its fullest.

He loved a good joke and was a great jokester himself, who was fondly nicknamed “Big Daddy.”

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Wanda, and his daughter, Sharon.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce; daughter, Debra Smith of Charlotte NC; daughter Cindy Eccleston (Gary) of Charlotte, NC and formerly of Dillon, MT; son Brett Smith (Sharon) of Lugoff, SC; brother Guy Stoner (Mary Jo) of Elliston, MT; grandchildren Amy Eccleston, Sarah Eccleston Anderson (Russ), Beth Evans (Rob), Lynn Manuel (Anthony), 4 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 12 at 11:00 am at Retz Funeral Home Chapel, 315 6th Avenue.

Burial with Military Honors will follow at Forestvale cemetery in Helena.

A reception-luncheon will follow the burial service.

Memorials may be sent to: The Disabled America Veterans, Ft. Harrison, MT 59636; The Lewis and Clark Humane Society, 2112 E Custer Ave., Helena, MT 59601; or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

LANE HAUGE

Lane M. Hauge, 53, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at a Havre hospital due to complications from Shy-Drager syndrome.

A viewing will be held Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Holland and Bonine Funeral Home. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Zoe Coutts officiating. Burial will follow at the Highland cemetery. A fellowship luncheon will be held at the church immediately after the services at the graveside.

Lane was born July 2, 1950, in Havre to Lester and Dorthea (Miltz) Hauge. He was raised and educated in Havre. He attended Montana State University where he received a bachelor of science degree in fish and wildlife management in June of 1973. He served in the U.S. Peace Corps for three years in Costa Rica. He then attended Gonzaga University School of Law and graduated magna cum laude in 1979.

He married Janine Leeds in April of 1977 in Havre. The couple then moved to New York where Lane earned a master of law degree in taxation in June of 1981 from New York University School of Law and also graduated as magna cum laude. He then joined the law firm of Emmanuel, Sheppard and Condon in Pensacola, Fla., where he was a partner. He returned to Havre in 1990 to practice law. He was the third generation of Hauges to practice law in north-central Montana. This year Lane formed a partnership with Tom Sheehy, Mark Harshman and Steve Gannon.

Lane was a member of the American Judicature Society, American Bar Association, the Florida Bar and the State Bar of Montana. He was also a member of the Havre Youth Baseball Association.

Lane enjoyed hunting and fishing, reloading and all sports, especially baseball.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his father, Lester N. Hauge in 1988.

Survivors include his children, Torger Jon Hauge serving in the U.S. Army in Germany, Joan Elizabeth of Havre and Anders Leeds of Havre; mother, Dorthea Hauge of Big Sandy; brother, Lester "Bud" Hauge Jr. of Florida; sister, Mary Lou Haney of Spokane, Wash.; aunts, uncles, nephews and cousins.

Memorials in Lane's honor may be made to the Havre Youth Baseball Association, c/o Gordon Thompson, P.O. Box 2200, Havre, MT 59501.

Services and arrangements are under the direction of Holland and Bonine Funeral Home.

Harold Earl Kelsh
(April 1, 1938 - July 8, 2011)

Harold “Puder” Earl Kelsh, age 73 of Helena passed away at his home on July 8, 2011.

He was born April 1, 1938 to Leo P. and Cecelia E. (Dupuis) Kelsh in Helena, Montana.

After graduation Harold entered the National Guard and obtained his Associate’s Degree.

He was then employed as a Civil Engineer Technician and retired from the Federal Highway Administration.

Harold was a loving father and his greatest moments were spending time with his children.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his children; sons, Jeff Kelsh and Stacey Kelsh both of Prince George, B.C., Canada and daughter, Jennifer Kelsh of Bozeman, MT.; grandchildren, Maeli Ann Kelsh of Prince George; brother, Edgar Kelsh; sisters, Celie Anderson and Diane Humphrey and his uncle and aunt, Frank and Mary Ellen Cooney.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at Retz Funeral Home Chapel.

A social gathering will follow the service at the Lewis and Clark Fairground’s first pavilion.

Fredrick Arthur Synness
(May 9, 1941 - June 30, 2011)

Fredrick Arthur Synness, 70, whose forebearers were a Montana pioneering family, passed away of natural causes Saturday at his home in the Helena Valley.
Freddy was born May 9, 1941, to Otis and Margaret Synness.

His great grandparents, Andreas and Gurina Synness, immigrated to Montana from Norway in 1879, and homesteaded on the Horse Basin Ranch, on the other side of North Hill.

While growing up in the East Helena Valley, Freddy worked hard on the family ranch on Lake Helena Road.

He attended Helena High, and married Gerry Mae Cloud.

Together they had eight children, they later divorced.

He remarried Geraldine Belgarde, they later divorced.

Freddy worked for the City of Helena for over 20 years, retiring due to health reasons in 1989.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing and lifting weights.

He enjoyed spending countless hours at his cabin in the shadow of the Sleeping Giant, where his grandparents Ole and Maggie Synness homesteaded in 1893.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Margie Wilmer Smalley and Mary Henry; his 2nd wife Geraldine; a son, Kelly Lee; and a daughter, Debra Ann Knutson.

Freddy is survived by his brothers Otis, Jr. (Bud), Wes and John; and his children Thomas Michael (Barb); Timothy John, Keith Wesley, Denise Marie (Dean) Webster; Kathey/Toots, Candace Rae (Jeff) Seliskar; 17 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 11a.m. Friday, July 8th at Little Red School House, located in the Helena Valley on Sierra Road, with a reception immediately following the service.

RICHARD ROGGE

JORDAN - Richard Clarence Rogge, 52, died of natural causes at his home in Jordan on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003.

Visitation was scheduled from 1 to 7 p.m. today at the Chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Jordan. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the VFW Hall in Jordan. Interment will follow in the Wolff cemetery in Sand Springs.

He was born on Jan. 9, 1951, in Jordan to Clarence W. and Stella (Barker) Rogge. He grew up on the family ranch near Sand Springs where he also attended school. He graduated from high school in Jordan in 1968 and attended Northern Montana College in Havre, where he received an associate's degree in electronic technology in 1972. He began his interest in love of music at a young age. In 1956, he and his sister Lois sang on television in Great Falls.

While attending college, Richard swamped at the original Elks Club in downtown Havre then played music at the Elks Country Club in a band called the Electric Cowboys. He worked for Brown's Hardware and Northern Electronics, until becoming an apprentice electrician with Williams Bros. Construction. After working for other electrical contractors, he began his own shop, R & S Electric, in 1980.

In June of 1977, he married Susan Howard. They were very active in church worship and organized numerous gospel bands as well as singing specials at church and other events over the years. Richard took his family on a mission trip to Belize and Mexico City in 1986. He continued his electrical business in Garfield County, where he moved the family in March of 1995 to help his dad on the family ranch where he resided until his death. He and Susan had five children together before divorcing in 2003.

Richard loved family, music, cookouts, camping, and took his walks religiously. He continued to enjoy music with his family and The Jordanaiers. One of his favorite places to play was at the rest home. He appreciated God and nature and always decorating the kitchen with wild flowers.

Survivors include his parents of Sand Springs; daughter, Elisa (Gerard) Murnion of Laurel; sons, Kevin Rogge of Schweinfort, Germany, and Brian Rogge of Laurel; daughters Rachel Rogge and Coryn Rogge, both of Laurel; sister, Lois (Darrell) Johnson of Dillon; niece, Sheryl (Brad) Wutzke of Billings; and granddaughter, Elizabeth (Libby) Murnion of Laurel.

Shanon Patricia Bright
(February 19, 1940 - July 2, 2011)

Sharon Patricia Bright age 71, passed away on July 2, 2011 at St. Peters Hospital after a ten month battle with Lung Cancer.

Sharon was born on February 19, 1940 in Helena, Montana to Buzzwell and Mary (Bresnan) Skinner.

She married Robert Sr. (Sonny) Bright on March 18, 1960 in Choteu Montana.

Her enjoyment in life was being a homemaker and the mother to four children.

She was a very loving person with a big heart.

She enjoyed taking care of her family, horses and her two dogs Bum and Mick were a love of hers.

Sharon worked at the Cooney Home and Mt. View Girls School and enjoyed it very much.

Sharon is survived by her loving husband Robert Sr. (Sonny); her four children, Denise (Paul) Cartisser, Shannon (Dennis) Meyer, Bobbie (Dave) Clark, Robert (Tammy) Bright; her brothers and sister, Josh Skinner, Tim Skinner and Mary Ann Nelson; grandchildren, Bryan (Mandie) Spece Jr., Buddy Mergenthaler, Sunni (Mike Taylor) Mergenthaler and Travis Cartisser; great – grandchildren, Corbin and Collin Spece, Jessica Mergenthaler, Belle Taylor, Dayton and Daimen Cartisser.

Sharon is also survived by her dogs Bum and Mick, her quarterhorse Mare Lola and best Phone friends Penny Bright and Raven Smith.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents Buzzwell and Mary Skinner; son in law, Buddy Mergenthaler Jr.; father in law, Cecil Ray Bright; mother in law, Elly May Cole Bright; Numerous brother and sister-in-laws.

A Vigil service will be 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 6th at Retz Funeral Home Chapel.

A Funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 7th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with interment to follow at Forestvale cemetery.
