Nick Georgeoff

Nick Georgeoff, 51, died Nov. 6, 2004, in San Felipe, Baja, Mexico, his longtime companion and love of his life, Bonnie, at his side.

Nick was born July 8, 1953, in Huntington Park, Calif., the only son of Nick and Anna Georgeoff.

He grew up and attended high school in Bell, Calif., where he swam and played water polo competitively. He attended UCLA on a swimming scholarship and studied architecture there.

In the mid-1970s, Nick left Los Angeles for Montana, settling in the Bitterroot Valley. In his three decades here he made many dear and lifelong friends, all of whom will forever feel his loss.

He was a skier, a fly-fisherman, a log-home builder and a talented woodworker. He was a true lover of animals; they felt that love and returned it to him in spades. Most of all, he loved women. All of them.

He was generous with his time and with his self. He was tall and handsome and funny, especially in his creative use and misuse of the English language. Who, among his many friends, can forget his description of the positive impact skiing had on his "clerical-vascular system, " or the occasional pain he felt in his "lower lombardo?"

After nearly three decades building log homes, the physical demands became too much for him, so he quit, sold everything he had, bought a motorhome and retired to his beloved Baja with Bonnie. Though his dream life of fishing and living on the beach lasted a scant two months, he died doing what he loved and wanted to do and what most people only dream of doing.

Georgeoff didn't take life seriously, and very likely isn't taking death that seriously either.

He was preceded in death by his father, Nick, in February 1996. He is survived by his companion, Bonnie, in San Felipe, Baja; his mother, Anna, of Bell, Calif., sisters Shirley O'Connor of Bonsall, Calif., and Dorothy Wilson of Temecula, Calif.; cousins George and Jim Mohoff of Los Angeles and many, many dear friends in the Bitterroot.

His ashes will be scattered over the Sea of Cortez, as he wished.

A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m. at the Eagles Lodge in Hamilton. Bring a potluck dish, any pictures you may have of him, and, of course, a Georgeoff story.

Margaret Elizabeth 'Beth' Manis Gannon

Margaret Elizabeth "Beth" Manis Gannon passed away peacefully on Nov. 28, 2004, in Oak Harbor, Wash. Born Oct. 4, 1909, in Stevensville to a family of early Montana settlers, Beth spent her childhood in Hamilton. Her grandfather, William Allen Strange, had journeyed to the Bitterroot Valley from Kansas by way of the Oregon Trail in 1864.

In 1932, Beth earned a degree in home economics from the University of Montana, where she was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority and president of the Home Economics Club. She recently became a "75-year member" of the Alpha Phi sorority. After her graduation, Beth moved to Washington State where she interned as a dietitian at Seattle General and then accepted a staff position at Swedish Hospital.

During most of the 1940s Beth lived in Spokane, where she was the director of dietetics at St. Luke's Hospital and nutritionist for the Spokane County Health Department. She returned to Seattle in 1948 when she married Bill Gannon, a lawyer working for Penn Mutual at the time. Beth served as chief dietician at Swedish Hospital from 1950 until her retirement in 1973.

In the mid-1950s, Beth bought property in Freeland, Wash., on Whidbey Island, where she enjoyed entertaining family and friends and made her permanent residence after her retirement. For over 20 years, Beth volunteered at Whidbey General and St. Augustine's In-The-Woods Episcopal Church. She was an avid baker and gardener.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Rosemary Manis, of Gainesville, Fla.; three nephews, Will (Jean) Manis of Sammamish, Wash., Steve (Lane) Manis, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Andy Manis, of Madison, Wis.; five grandnephews, one grand-niece and a number of relatives in the Bitterroot Valley. Her husband, Bill Gannon, and her brother, Gene Manis, preceded her in death.

A memorial service and interment will be held Saturday, Dec. 4, at 10 a.m. at the St. Augustine's In-The-Woods Episcopal Church in Freeland. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Augustine's Memorial Fund, P. O. Box 11, Freeland, WA, 98249.

HARVEY WELCH

Harvey Welch, 73, of Bozeman, formerly of Havre, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

A funeral service was scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel in Bozeman. Visitation was from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel. Cremation will take place following the service.

Harvey was born in Harlowton on April 24, 1930, to Clifton and Mae Welch. He was a graduate of the University of Montana and served in the Navy during the Korean War from 1948 to 1952.

Upon Harvey's return to Montana, he married Gloria Hawkins. After stops in Salmon, Idaho, and Sidney, the family moved to Havre. Harvey went to work for State Farm Insurance Company as an agent. Welch Insurance Agency flourished in Havre.

Harvey maintained a strong presence in Havre for several years by coaching championship swim teams and softball teams and broadcasting high school sports across the Hi-Line.

Harvey later met Sandy Bright of Kalispell and married her on June 7, 1986. The couple moved to Twin Falls, Idaho.

Harvey's ability to mentor and coach, people led him into management with State Farm. Management eventually took him from Twin Falls to Anchorage, Alaska. The move to Anchorage was a dream come true for Harvey. He and Sandy enjoyed eight years there. After 35 years with State Farm, Harvey retired.

Retirement brought Harvey and Sandy back to Montana to be close to family and friends. It was in Bozeman that Harvey was able to pursue his true passions, horses, hunting and fishing. Without saying a word, Harvey would spend endless hours hunting with his bird dog on a frozen lake or fishing on a quiet stream. Harvey created a special bond with his fishing partner, Lynn, a friendship formed by hard, cold winter winds and long, hot summer days. We believe their trips were successful whether their lines got wet or not. The Ruby, Sixteen Mile and the Shields will never be fished the same.

Harvey was preceded in death by his father, Clifton, and his mother, Mae; brothers, Tim, Mike, and Jerry; and sisters, Ruth Bacon and Edith Bartlett.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy; sisters, Isla Welch, Jean DeVault, Amy Ballentine and Marilyn Robinson; children, Vicki (Nelson) Rumore, Judy (Tom) Stichman, Mike (Dawn) Welch, Dave Bright, Kevin Bright, Keith (Kay) Bright, Scott (Erin) Bright and Tom Bright; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Bozeman Deaconess Hospice or to the Cancer Treatment Center, 931 Highland Boulevard, Suite 3200, Bozeman, MT 59715
