Clarence Edward King

Clarence Edward King, 88, of Hamilton passed away Thursday, May 13, 2004, at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital of natural causes.

He was born Dec. 23, 1915, in Garfield County, son of Arthur and Mammie King.

Clarence married Lois Kettleson on Dec. 31, 1941, and together they had three sons, David, Donald and Ronald. Ronald died in 1947 and is buried in Glasgow. David died on Sept. 13, 1989, and is buried in Darby. David was married to Janie Jones and they had three children, Brian, Stephanie and Shannon. Lois passed away on May 20, 2003. Donald is married to Kathryn Sargent and has two children from a previous marriage, Dawna Lee and Eric King. Clarence has 10 great-grandchildren.

Clarence farmed in Glasgow until 1964. They moved to the Bitterroot and bought a place in Charlos Heights and he was a ditch walker for four years. He was also a mechanic for many years. Clarence loved the outdoors and liked to ride horses, hunt and fish. He enjoyed laughing and making others laugh.

No services will be held. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton.

Merle J. McMannis

Committal services for Merle J. McMannis, of Hamilton, who passed away on January 26, 2004, will be held on Friday, May 21, 2004, at 3 p.m. at Riverview cemetery with a gathering following in the community room at Daly-Leach Chapel.

Jalia Marie Henderson

Jalia Marie Henderson, 78, of Missoula passed away in the evening, Sunday, May 16, 2004, at her residence in Missoula. Service arrangements are pending.

Genevieve Hudson

Genevieve Hudson, 96, of Victor passed away early in the morning, Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at the Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital in Hamilton.

Ronald Brothers of Dowling Funeral Home and Crematory, 415 S. Second St. in Hamilton, is caring for the family.

Florence G. Wildey

Florence G. Wildey, 90, of Hamilton passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital. She was born June 16, 1913, in the Robbins Home in Conner where she grew up living with a family of six brothers and sisters.

Florence remembered that most days were filled with working in the garden in the summer, helping her folks put aside vegetables and fruit for the summer and winter and also trucking them to the Big Hole Valley to be sold. She also helped feed and milk, take care of the other animals and hiring out. Florence said that school time was hard and short.

She attended elementary school at Rye Creek in Conner and later attended high school in Darby. Florence remembered spending summers at Medicine Hot Springs in the late 1920s, helping her folks run the restaurant and taking care of the cabins for Ed Smith. In 1930, she married Miles Ray in Darby and together they had five children, Curt, Norma, Ben, Marilyn and Alvin. They lived on the Bud Ray Ranch at the mouth of the North Fork of Rye Creek.

Florence recalled many friends and family who would come and stay for a get away, hunting trip, to brand or to put up hay. After many moves and working for the ACM in Anaconda, ranching, farming and lumber mills, Miles was forced to retire because of his health. Miles later died at their home in Darby in 1962.

Florence married Morris Wildey in 1964 and they lived in the log house Morris built on Medicine Tree Creek. Her life at Medicine Tree, with a family that had doubled in size, was filled doubley with what she loved most, her and Morris' children and grandchildren. Florence loved her family and friends and she was never far from her gardens, flowers and farm animals. Morris died in 1982 and Florence moved to Hamilton where she has lived the past 22 years.

Florence is survived by children, Marilyn and Larry Matteson of Helena, and Alvin and Thelma Ray of Lincoln; step-children, Eldon and Ruth Wildey of Hamilton, Bonnie and Phil Richards of Hamilton, Janette and Jerry Shook of Darby and Janice Applebury of Hamilton; daughters-in-law Darleen Ray of Hamilton and Betty Ray of Burchette, Wash.; two sisters, Helen Peterson of Anaconda and Marie Mayberry of Colorado; 32 grandchildren, 87 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents and two husbands, Florence was preceded in death by three children, Curt and Ben Ray and Norma Ray Evers; granddaughter, Debbie Evers Buhler; sisters, Nettie and Sue, and brothers, Arthur (Buzz) and Don; sons-in-law, Jay and Rex Applebury and Lawrence Evers.

Graveside services will be held Friday, June 4, at 2 p.m. at the Lone Pine cemetery in Darby. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton.

Esther E. (Schmitt) Rennaker

Esther E. (Schmitt) Rennaker passed away May 27, 2004, at The Big Sky Horizon Hospice Home in Billings after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Esther was born in Wells County, N.D., on June 28, 1928, the seventh of 10 children born to John and Pauline Schmitt. She moved with her family in the fall of 1941 to the Charlos Heights area where she worked on the family farm and attended school. She and Floyd L. Rennaker were united in marriage in 1950, and lived for many years in the Charlos Heights area. Her parents, husband, and three siblings (John Schmitt, Rosela Weipert and Alvin Schmitt) preceded her in death. Surviving siblings are Leona Baumbach of Hurdsfield, N. D., Gertrude Berg of Minot, N. D., Elmer Schmitt of Libby, Alice McCrossin and Jerry Schmitt of Hamilton, Glen Schmitt of Magazine, Ark.; her children, Suzan Thomas, Rose Loomis, Floyd Rennaker Jr., all of Billings, and Pauline Springer of Tucson, Ariz. Also, very dear to her heart were her seven grandchildren, Michelle, Shane, Cindy, Tyna, Trisha, Raymond, and Heather and five great-grandchildren Ashley, Cadence, Makayla, Kie, and Joey.

Esther moved to Billings in 1988 to be closer to her children. For the past four years she was a resident at Sage Tower, a retirement home in Billings where she had many friends and enjoyed numerous social activities.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, June 12, 2004, at the Charlos Heights Community Church with Pastor Martin Lien officiating. Interment will be at River View cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Big Sky Horizon Hospice Home in Billings, Mon.

GAY KRAVIK

DALLAS - Gay Duane Kravik, 64, died Friday, June 27, 2003, from cancer.

A celebration of his life was scheduled for this morning at the Wildwood Chapel at Restland Funeral Home, with a graveside service following.

Gay was born on March 27, 1939, at Havre to Gay Laverne and Breta (Anderson) Kravik. He grew up on a dairy farm in Havre and graduated from Havre High School. After attending Montana Tech University, he graduated with a master's degree in petroleum engineering from Penn State University.

He worked in the oil and gas industry for 39 years and retired in 2002 from DeGolyer and MacNaughton.

Gay's passions in life included traveling, baseball, scuba diving, Penn State football, photography, the Dallas Cowboys, reading, theater, his grandchildren and two-stepping with his wife, Cindy.

Gay lived an active life until diagnosed with cancer on Valentine's Day, but he fought the battle with courage and faith.

Gay was preceded in death by his parents, Gay Laverne and Breta Kravik; brother, Gary; and first wife, Marie.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Lea; son, Michael (Susan) Kravik; daughter, Elyse (Andy) Fulton; five grandchildren; brother, Jim (Sandy) Kravik of Hayden Lake, Idaho; Cindy's daughter, Amy (Chris) Harris and their daughter; a niece; and numerous other loved and appreciated family members, friends, and fantasy football compadres.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Gilda's Club of North Texas, the Marie Sullivan Kravik Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Montana Tech University Foundation, or a charity of their choice.

Harold Lewis Baier

Harold Lewis Baier, Ph.D., USNR, 84, died April 22 at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital following an extended period of illness.

Dr. Baier was born March 16, 1920, in New Brunswick, N.J., to Blanche Wood Baier and George Baier. He was the youngest of seven children. Harold attended grade school and high school in New Brunswick, and he continued his education for seven more years at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. He earned his Ph.D. in zoology and microbiology.

His college education was interrupted to serve in the Navy during WWII. He was a communications officer and landed on Omaha Beach on D-day. He spent three weeks there with the 7th Beach Battalion. Following a three month tour in the European Theatre, Harold was sent back to Norfolk, Va., and later shipped out to the Pacific Theatre, serving in both Iwo Jima and Japan.

Harold was awarded various medals including the Army Distinguished Unit Citation (American Theatre), the European-African-Middle East Service Medal with one star, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal, and the WWII Victory Ribbon. After Harold's active duty service he remained in the Naval Reserves. He retired with 24 years of service.

Harold went to work after finishing his Ph.D. for the Department of the Army's biological and chemical warfare program at Ft. Detrick in Frederick, Md.

While there he met his wife, Betty Chris, and they were married in 1956. He worked at Ft. Detrick for 18 years. In 1970, when the U.S. government began abolishing many of these programs, Harold was transferred to the Army Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah.

Now in the west, Harold chose to retire early and move to his wife's native state of Montana. Harold had fallen in love with Montana, after spending 20 years of summer vacations in Betty's hometown of Hamilton, and annual visits to West Yellowstone.

In 1972 Harold and Betty moved to West Yellowstone, where they purchased rental property. They also have a home in Bozeman.

Harold enjoyed the past 34r years of his life living full time in Montana. He kept busy maintaining rentals, raising his family, and traveling. He visited Denmark several times with his Danish wife, attended reunions of the 7th Beach Battalion throughout the U.S., and took trips to New Zealand several times. Two of the most memorable trips were going back to Normandy for the 50th anniversary of the D-day invasion and spending Christmas and New Years in Antarctica in 1993.

Harold is survived by his wife, Betty Christensen Baier, of Bozeman; son, Hans "Chris" Baier, of West Yellowstone, daughter, Olivane "Libby" of Ronan; his two special grandsons, Wendall and Savas; his sister, Marge, of New Brunswick, N.J.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews on the east coast.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Harold was cremated and his ashes will be interred in the National cemetery at Arlington, Va., near one of his brothers.

Memorial services will be held 1:30 p.m., Saturday, June 5, 2004, at St. James Episcopal Church in Bozeman. The services were delayed due to Betty's recent broken hip.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice, or to the Harold Baier Scholarship Fund, c/o Yellowstone Basin Bank, P.O. Box 1810, West Yellowstone, Mont., 59758.

Charles R. Ashford

Charles R. Ashford, 75, of Hamilton passed away Wednesday, June 2, at the Valley View Estates. A service will be held Friday, June 4, at 11 a.m. at the Hamilton First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Wayne Wardwell officiating. Memorials may be sent to Ravalli Services Corporation. Arrangements are under the care of the Daly-Leach Chapel.

Dorothy S. Akey

Dorothy S. Akey, 79, of Lakeview, Ohio, died at the home of her daughter Thursday, May 20, 2004.

She was born on May 28, 1924, at Urbana, Ohio, the daughter of Dewey and Glenna (Hupp) Stemble.

She is survived by her daughter, Kay (Randy) Creech of Stevensville; two granddaughters, Brandi (David) Oligee of Lewisburg, Ohio, and Amelia Shoe of Stevensville; two grandsons, Ross Shoe and Benjamin Creech, both of Stevensville; three great granddaughters, Haley Oligee, Hannah Oligee and Lily Oligee; a brother, Robert (Betty) Stemble of Lewistown, Ohio, a niece and two nephews.

Visitation will be held at the Van Horn Funeral Home in Lakeview, Ohio, on Monday, May 24, 2004.

Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at the Oak Dale cemetery in Urbana, Ohio.

Memorials are asked to the Legacy Ministries International, 1205 Whitefield Circle, Xenia, OH 45385.

The Whitesitt Funeral Home of Stevensville is in charge of local arrangements.

Claire E. Bitterman

Claire E. Bitterman, 74, of Alberton passed away in the afternoon, May 20, 2004, at his residence. A memorial service is will be held Sunday, June 6, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Rivers Edge Resort in Alberton. The obituary will follow.

William 'Bill' Hahn

William "Bill" Hahn, 77, of Seeley Lake died at his home on Saturday, May 22, 2004.

Arrangements are pending and will be announced by the Whitesitt Funeral Home and Cremation of Stevensville.

JOSHUA RUTHERFORD

HARLEM - Joshua Thomas Raven Chief (Kuxi Hunpa) Rutherford, 28, a Blaine County deputy sheriff, died on Thursday, May 29, 2003, after responding to a domestic disturbance.

A wake and rosary was Sunday at the Fort Belknap Agency in the Red Whip Recreation Center. A funeral Mass was this morning at the Harlem High School gymnasium with the Rev. Joseph Retzel, S.J., officiating.

Joshua was born on Aug. 16, 1974, in Denver, Colo. He was educated at Edgewater Elementary School, Wheat Ridge Junior High School and Harlem High School. He graduated in 1993, lettering in football and wrestling. He was a member of the National Honor Society and Aises. He attended the University of Montana.

Joshua married Roberta King on June 19, 1993. Two sons, Thomas Michael and Joshua Teague, both of Dodson, were born to this marriage. Josh and Roberta later divorced, but remained partners.

Joshua married Jennifer Johnson on Feb. 14, 1999. Two sons, Matthew Clark and Michael Walter, both of Las Vegas, N.M., were born to this marriage.

Joshua had two loves - his children and being a law enforcement officer. Following in his father's footsteps, he became a law enforcement officer at the Hill County Detention Center. He then was employed by the Harlem Police Department where after three months he became the chief of police. In February 2000 he became a deputy with the Blaine County Sheriff's Office. He was a state-certified instructor, teaching defensive tactics at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy in Helena.

He was an expert marksman. He was eager and willing to learn new things. He was a certified First Responder, a breath test specialist, a certified school resource officer and a Hitman master instructor. He was a loving son and a best father, husband, brother, cousin, nephew, brother-in-law, son-in-law, wrestler, co-worker, grandson, friend and "Inktomini."

Joshua was preceded in death by his grandparents, Maxine Bigby Brown, Walter Magpie, Pete Matthews; and his much loved uncle, PeeWee Magpie.

Survivors include his sons, Thomas, Teague, Matthew and Michael; wife, Jennifer; friend, Roberta King; mother, Maxine Magpie Clifford; father, Mike Matthews; sisters, Tammy Rider, Jody Rutherford and Angela Matthews; brothers, Lewis Rutherford and Sean Cherichigno; grandmothers, Esther Dumont and Ruby Rasor; great-grandmother, Theresa Walker; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces.
