Mary Saumill

Mary Saumill, 88, of Missoula passed away Thursday, March 25, 2004, in Hamilton of natural causes.

Arrangements are pending and will be announced by the Daly-Leach Chapel.

Kenneth Stromme Jr.

Kenneth Harold (June) Stromme Jr., 76, a native of the Bitterroot Valley, passed away in the evening, Friday, July 25, 2003, at his home in Darby, surrounded by his family.

Born in Stevensville on Sunday, Sept. 12, 1926, he was the son of Kenneth Harold and Altha Ellen (Eastridge) Stromme.

June attended school in Stevensville and Darby.

After in school in 1944 he started working for the C.L. and R. Lumber Company in Darby.

On the Jan. 20, 1945, June joined the United States Navy and served his country with pride until the July 19, 1946. During his enlistment June was aboard the USS Hollandia (CVE-97) out of PSC USNB Bremerton, Wash.; he was stationed primarily in Hawaii. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign and World War II victory medals.

After his time with the Navy, he returned to the Bitterroot Valley and continued to work for the lumber and sawmill industry for 40 years until his retirement.

On Sept. 7, 1951, June married the love of his life, Dorothy Ann Gierdal, at the Christian Church Parsonage in Hamilton.

June took pleasure in fishing, boating, hunting, nurturing roses and spending time with his family.

June was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, in September 1999; his parents; his brother, Ralph, and his faithful puppy dog, Misty.

He is survived by daughters, Shirley Ann Dowdy of Darby and her children, Kenneth Lance Dowdy, Tami Dowdy Yingling (Olin); Greg Dowdy (Maureen), Amy Dowdy Frost (Glen), Davey Dowdy (Cassie); Melodie House and her spouse, Dave, of Darby and their children, Erica House, Miranda House, Mary Weisgerber and spouse, Tom, ; Denise Decicio and spouse, Rick, of Kent, Wash.; Alta Braach of Salmon, Idaho; Wayne Stromme of Portland, Ore., and Marilynn Arnold of Sacramento, Calif.

The family will be present for the visitation to be held at the Dowling Funeral Home Tuesday, July 29, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the chapel.

A religious graveside service will be held Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Lone Pine cemetery in Darby. Pastor Alvin House will be officiating.

Pallbearers are Tom Weisgerber, Rick Decicio, Kenneth Lance Dowdy, Greg Dowdy, Davey Dowdy, Wayne Stromme and Glen Frost. Honorary pallbearers are Dave House and Olin Yingling.

Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion of Hamilton and the Marine Corps League - Bitterroot Valley Detachment # 937.

After the interment a reception will be held at the Darby Community Center.

Ronald Brothers of Dowling Funeral Home and Crematory, 415 S. Second St. in Hamilton, is caring for the family.

Loren Franklin Miller

Loren Franklin Miller, 79, of Corvallis, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2003, in Hamilton at the Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital Hospice and Palliative Care Center.

Frank was born on July 3, 1924, in Clearmont, Wyo., the son of Charles and Ethel Davis Miller.

Following his education, Frank served in the U.S. Army during World War II and also in the Korean War.

He married Ruth Lois Ohl on Sept. 18, 1947, and she preceded him in death in 1980.

Following his discharge from the U.S. Army, he worked in an Alaska gold mine and then retired from the Ravalli County Road Department after 32 years.

Survivors include, his children, Tim Miller of Corvallis and Terry and his wife, Barbara Miller, of Hamilton; sisters, Helen Wight of Corvallis, Nina Erickson of Salmon, Idaho, Glenn Winkelblack of Silver City, Idaho, and Roberta Brown of Stevensville; brothers, Carl (Bill) of Hamilton and Roland (Fred) of Darby; grandchildren, Jody of Arizona, Jake of Utah and Chris of California. Other survivors include two great-grandchildren, Jenson and Josh, several nieces and nephews and his companion, Doris McKee of Corvallis.

Besides his parents and wife, Ruth, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles and Don and sisters, Alice and Doris.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, July 31, at 11 a.m. at the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton with the Rev. Stephen Millar officiating. Private urn placement will take place later at the Corvallis cemetery.

Military honors will be presented by the Hamilton American Legion and the Marine Corps League Bitterroot Detachment #937.

The family suggests memorials to Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 1200 Westwood Dr. Hamilton, Mont., 59840 or to Special Olympics.

Colvin W. Samsel

Colvin W. (Cal) Samsel, 71, of Corvallis, passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2003, in Missoula at St. Patrick Hospital.

Cal was born on July 9, 1932, in Missoula, the son of William and Hallie Colvin Samsel.

Cal received his education in Western Montana. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps in January 1951 and served during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge he returned to Western Montana.

He began working for the U.S. Forest Service as a packer in 1956. From 1969 to 1978 he managed a ranch near Grangeville, Idaho. He returned to Montana and continued to work for the Forest Service.

Cal married Michele Clark in Darby on Sept. 2, 1967.

Cal was a man of many talents. He ran a string of mules not only for the Forest Service, but also in many parades throughout the state. He help build some of the buildings for the movie set, "Heaven's Gate." He worked in construction with Jim Singleton for several years. There was nothing he could not do or try. He enjoyed music, playing guitar and banjo with friends.

He is survived by his wife, Michele of Corvallis; his children, Cindy Young of Great Falls, Carole Burton of Palm Beach, Fla., Keifford "Bud" and Forrest Samsel both of Lolo, Tima Brown and Bill Samsel, both of Polson; his brothers, Hal of Polson and Bill of Evaro; his sister, Sharlene Ewald, of College Station, Texas; 22 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents he was also preceded in death by his brother Kirk.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, Aug. 1, at 11 a.m. at the Daly-Leach Chapel. Full military honors will be presented by the Hamilton American Legion and the Marine Corps League Bitterroot Detachment # 937.

Private family urn placement will take place at a later date.

The family suggests memorials may be given to the charity of the donors choice.

Andre Joseph-Adilard Vaillancourt

Andre Joseph-Adilard Vaillancourt went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 28, 2003.

He was born on Jan. 30, 1955, at Timmon, Ontario, Canada, and was the son of Jean Fernand Vaillancourt and Dorothy Simpson.

He was raised in Longlac, Ontario, and received his education at Longlac and Caronport, Saskatchewan, Canada, and also attended Briercrest Bible College.

Andre first came to the Florence area in 1974 to work in the ministry and share the gospel.

He married Mavis Scheffler in Chattanooga, Tenn., in 1978. The couple resided in Canada, Washington and in 1980 moved back to Montana. He planted churches in Northern Ontario and pastored a church in Missoula.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include his wife, Mavis, of Florence; children, Ben (Maxine) Vaillancourt and Denny (Amber) Vaillancourt, both of Missoula; Ken (Ashley) Vaillancourt of Fort Meade, Md., and Karisa Vaillancourt of Florence. Also surviving is his mother, Dorothy Simpson of Thunder Bay, Ontario; two brothers, Patrick and Daniel, both of Thunder Bay; two sisters, Paula of Edmonton, Alberta and Charmaine of Thunder Bay; four grandchildren, Austin, Jordan, Shaylynn and Gavin and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his home-going will be held on Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at 10 a.m. in the Light of the Valley Assembly of God Church in Stevensville, with Pastor Art Huwe officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday, July 31, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the the Whitesitt Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Florence-Carlton cemetery. A reception will be follow at the church.

The Whitesitt Funeral Home in Stevensville is in charge of arrangements.

Wallace James Dobbins

Coach Wallace "Wally" James Dobbins, 80, passed away Nov. 18, 2002. He was born Sept. 16, 1922, in Hamilton, one of three sons to Price and Gladys Dobbins and grandson to pioneers of Montana's Bitterroot Valley.

He grew up in the great Northwest. In 1945 he enlisted in the Army at Ft. Lewis, Wash., and was stationed in Okinawa for two years. After the war Wally joined the smokejumpers and fought forest fires for eight summers and year later worked as a Forest Service dispatcher. He also worked in the silver-ore mines of northern Idaho. He was recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency in 1957 and worked 14 years in Formosa, Taiwan, Agana, Guam, and Marana, Ariz. Wally returned to his passion of teaching and coaching for Marana Public Schools until his retirement in 1987.

Wally received his education at Thompson Falls High School, and later graduated from the University of Montana with a master's degree in education. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

He was a great friend and family man, and will be missed dearly. Wally requested that his remains be cremated and that he be buried near his mother and grandmother at the town cemetery in Stevensville.

Survivors include his wife, Marian, of 54 years; three sons, David of Seattle, Jeffrey (Pam) of Tucson, Ariz., and Peter of Tempe, Ariz.; a brother, Jackson (Elsie) Dobbins of Mesa, Ariz., and six grandchildren, Jennifer, Peter, Alexander, Andrew, Christopher and Harrison.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2003, by Father James Hogan at the Maplewood cemetery in Stevensville. Post #1509 VFW will conduct military honors.

As many of you know, Wally suffered from Parkinson's disease for about 12 years. Should friends desire, memorials may be sent to the Arizona Chapter of the Parkinson's Disease Association, 616 N Country Club Road, Tucson, Ariz., 85716.

The Whitesitt Funeral Home in Stevensville is in charge of arrangements.

Sarah Gold Dockstader

Sarah Gold Dockstader, 87, of Stevensville passed away at her home July 18, 2003. She was born Feb. 26, 1916, in Brockton, Mass.; the daughter of Guy D. and Evelyn (Welch) Gold.

As a girl she lived in several places in the Northeast, finally settling in Elmira, N.Y., where her uncle played the organ. She received a strong spiritual foundation and Biblical education in her childhood. She later attended Elmira College where she earned a bachelor's degree in 1937 graduating Summa Cum Laude. She later obtained her master's in speech and drama in 1965 at Temple University. She taught English for three years in N.Y. State before her marriage to Lyle E. Dockstader on July 26, 1941.

Sarah was a full-time mother to her two children, David and Claire. She later taught English and directed plays at the Wasatch Academy - a Presbyterian boarding school in Utah from 1965-1974

Sarah was always very involved in the work of the church and social issues, most recently at the Stevensville United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, led the Missions Committee for many years and was active in the United Methodist Women.

She also belonged to the Audubon Society, Daly Mansion Preservation Trust, Teller Wildlife Refuge, Bitterroot Human Rights Alliance, as well as many other organizations involved with peace, justice, humanitarian efforts and preservation of the environment. She sponsored several children through the Christian Children's Fund.

She had a great love of music, gardening and nature. She liked to hike, cross-country ski and bird-watch. She was very interested in world affairs and traveled in Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia, India, New Zealand and Costa Rica, visiting three of her sponsored children. The dramatic arts were another passion including pantomime and clowning.

She lost her father at the age of 10 and both her husband, Lyle, and mother in 1962.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Claire and Rick Trauth of Stevensville; her son and daughter-in-law, David and Brita Dockstader of Louisville, Ky.; her grandchildren, Karl Dockstader of Louisville, Kirsten Dockstader of Salt Lake City, and Melissa Trauth and Jessica Trauth, both of Stevensville.

Memorial services will be conducted Wednesday, July 30, 2003, 2 p.m. at the Stevensville United Methodist Church with Pastor Constance Sidebottom and David Andersen.

Memorials may be given in her name to the Stevensville United Methodist Church Missions.

Arrangements are in the care of Whitesitt Funeral Home of Stevensville.

Ronnie Dean Richey

Ronnie Dean Richey, 53, of Spokane, Wash., died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003. Ronnie was born Aug. 10, 1950 in New Castle, Wyo. to Dorothy Richey (Wildy) and William Oliver Richey.

He attended Florence Carlton school in Florence and served four years in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1972.

He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Richey, of Spokane, Wash.; two children, Fawn Richey, 25, and Jarrett Richey, 28, and their mother, Aurellia; beloved grandson, Dean Richey of Spokane; brother, Richard Richey and wife, Kristi, and nephew, Devin, of Hamilton; two sisters, Karen Young and husband, Mark, of Dillon, Colo. and Ronda Raymond and husband, Terry, and their children of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Ron's passions in life were his motorcycles, children and friends. He died doing what he loved most. He will be sincerely missed. A memorial was held at the Lake City Community Church in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Lee M. Johnson

Lee M. Johnson, 54, of Stevensville, died at the home of his loving sister and brother-in-law on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003.

He was born on March 1, 1949 at Waukesha, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his mother Florence in 1970 and his father Martin in August, 2003.

Survivors include his sister Karen (Dick) Smith of Stevensville.

No formal services are planned at this time. The Whitesitt Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Stevensville is in charge of arrangements.
