Ann B. Casselman

Ann B. Casselman, 76, former teacher and vibrant member of the Hamilton community, passed away Thursday, Oct. 23, in Missoula at St. Patrick Hospital of injuries sustained in an auto-pedestrian accident.

Ann was an extremely warm and friendly woman who took every opportunity to maintain life-long connections with her friends and students. She had a great passion for nature, bird watching, animals, and took great pleasure in passing on this love to her many students throughout the years.

Ann was born on May 22, 1927, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Helen Giehm Barrett. She graduated from Morning Side High School as valedictorian of her class. Ann earned a bachelor of science degree from Morning Side College and began her teaching career in southern Minnesota in 1949 teaching English and health. She was also the girls activities sponsor.

In 1952 she returned to Iowa and taught physical education and was the cheerleading and drill team advisor until 1967. During the summers, Ann studied at the University of Montana and received her master's degree in biological science in 1967. Her research studies took place at Yellow Bay on Flathead Lake.

On June 12, 1967, she married Charles Casselman in Sloan, Iowa. They later divorced in 1995 but remained neighbors. In the fall of 1967, Mrs. Casselman began teaching biology at Hamilton High. For many years, she enjoyed advising the Broncettes drill team. In 1980, she transferred to Westview Junior High, teaching science and English until her retirement in 1995. She continued to teach as a substitute until the time of her death. Altogether, she educated children for an amazing 54 years and she loved all of her students. Ann delighted in the fact that she had instructed three generations of Bitterrooters. As a truly devoted master teacher, Mrs. Casselman believed students benefited most from active participation in science. Although her classroom was exciting and stimulating, the annual birdwatching field trips were her favorite. Ann was a strong supporter of Hamilton athletics. Whenever possible, she attended the games of her children and took personal interest in their athletic careers. The kids will miss her enthusiasm at their games.

In 1959, she began her summer time work as a lookout for the Forest service starting at the Antrim Lookout. When it was decommissioned, she transferred to the Willow Creek Lookout. With the exception of 1976, she spent her summers scouting for forest fires until 1998. In 1997, the Ann Fire was named for her. This honor was bestowed on her by her friends at the Forest Service as she was the one who reported the fire, but, most importantly, in recognition of her 38 summers as a fire lookout. In between thunderstorms, Ann found peace and serenity on the lookout.

Recently, Ann spent many hours with her friends at The Mill, Bitterroot Public Library and many other Hamilton businesses. Her presence will be greatly missed.

Ann was a member of the PEO, Eastern Star and the Colonial Danes.

Ann is survived by her many friends, colleagues and students who will remember the positive impact she had on their lives.

A celebration of Ann's life will be held Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 6 p.m. at the Hamilton High Performing Arts Center.

Private family urn placement will take place at a later date.
