Jack Dorner

Jack Dorner, local artist, musician and social worker, passed away Oct. 17, 2002, at St. Peter’s Hospital from lung disease.

Jack was born Aug. 9, 1923, to Robert C. and Mabel (Bompart) Dorner. He was raised in Helena and attended Helena schools, Carroll College and San Diego State College where he attained his master’s degree in social work.

After graduating from high school, Jack was drafted in the U.S. Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge with the highly decorated 372nd Engineer Regiment.

After the war, Jack went to Carroll College and graduated with honors, majoring in education. He taught school in Sumatra, Mont., Wallace, Idaho, Ione, Wash., and Adak, Alaska. During the summer while attending Carroll College Jack was a smoke jumper out of Missoula making 13 jumps that summer before the Mann Gulch Fire near Wolf Creek.

Jack was a social worker for the State of Montana for 17 years. He was a champion for the poor and unfortunate. He had a big heart and was always willing to help someone in need.

Jack loved his music. A talented musician himself, he never missed the Dixieland Jazz Festival held here in Helena. As a tribute to his social behavior he formed a band called the Retreads composed of Dan Kasperak, Jim Harrington, Don Wilcox, and himself. They played several years at the rest homes in Helena and were surely appreciated.

After retiring from the State of Montana, Jack thought he would like to try oil painting. He took to it like a duck to water. Several of his paintings won blue ribbons at the State Fair in Great Falls and other art shows. His “Mother Theresa” looks like a photograph. He stated that while painting her portrait it seemed as if his hands were being guided through the strokes.

In summing up Jack’s life, the most repeated phrase is, “ he was such a truly nice and talented man.”

Jack is survived by his sisters Gert Richeson and Florence Liedle, both of Helena; and several nieces and nephews. His parents and a brother, Robert, preceded him in death.

No services are planned. His cremains will be inurned in the Forestvale cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Melodee House, C/O WestMont, 2525 Colonial Dr., Helena, MT 59601.

KATHERINE LORRAINE LOBERG

Katherine Lorraine (Pepin) Loberg died peacefully in her sleep on Nov. 5, 2000, at her home in Billings. She always said this was the way she wanted to die, and God granted her wish. None of us expected Him to take her so soon. We know He called her to watch over all the animals in Heaven.

Lorraine, as she was known by all that loved her, was born March 5, 1925, in Havre to Adolph and Katherine Ann (Molitor) Pepin. She gtew up there and met Melvin Loberg in Saco. They were married on Dec. 16, 1954. They spent time in Wisconsin and Michigan, and in September 1969 they moved back to Montana.

Lorraine was an accomplished musician and played the piano, organ, and accordion by ear. She and Mel spent several years playing for dances on the Hi-Line. They loved all kinds of music and would sit in on jam sessions with their friends in Billings.

Lorraine’s passion was her love for animals. She would take in strays and work with the animal shelter to find them homes. She spent countless hours caring for them and found great satisfaction in finding safe shelter and loving homes for them. She knew this was the reason God put her on this earth.

Lorraine loved Mel and Mel loved her. In their early retirement years they spent time traveling around in their motorhome. As time went by they enjoyed growing old together, working in the yard, feeding the birds, raising a garden and keeping in touch with their children, grandchildren and friends, She was loved by many and she will always be with us.

Lorraine was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She had an independent spirit and did things her way. She had a heart of gold and continually helped people in their time of need. She was an avid Green Bay Packer fan, and her family would often ask her to watch the game in a different room if they were losing.

Our memories of her are many and they are the things we will always treasure. She was the one we still called when we were sick to make us feel better. The holiday memories of the smells of her kitchen cooking turkey dinners and fighting over who would get the drumsticks, her delicious Finn bread toast, and also her wonderful sense of humor will never be forgotten.

She is survived by her husband, Mel; children, Linda Vance, Tom and Kim Loberg, Marsha and Kirk Johnson, Cheryl Loberg and her husband, Doug Robinson, and Jim and Gloria Taylor; grandchildren, John and Rebecca Loberg, Cole Johnson, Ryan and Wendy Taylor and Stacy Taylor; sister Mary Louise Atkinson; and her beloved pets, Meisha and Javan.

At Lorraine’s request, cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends are asked to join the family on Thursday Nov. 9, 2 p.m. at Smith’s West Chapel, 304 34th Street West, Billings for memorial service. Memorials may be sent to the Billings Animal Shelter.

I will miss my best friend. I love you honey. Rest in peace.
