GRAY MACKAY
Gray Mackay, widow of Malcolm S. Mackay, Jr. (Bud), died peacefully in her sleep at the Hillcrest Nursing Home in Wayzata, Minn. on Sept. 5, 2003. Gray spent many happy summers at the Lazy EL Ranch, the Mackay family ranch in Roscoe.
Gray was an active supporter of the Carbon County Historical Society in Red Lodge, and served on the advisory board of that organization for many years. She also served on the board of the Holter Museum of Art in Helena, and on the advisory board of the C.M. Russell Museum in Great Falls. She was one of the founding owners of The Sitzmark, one of the first ski shops that opened in Red Lodge following the development of the Red Lodge ski area.
Gray was also an avid Bridge player and enjoyed giving lessons to some of her younger friends. Interior design and cooking were also her interests. In 1994, she wrote a cookbook, “Cooking with Style.”
Gray was born in Englewood, N.J. on March 22, 1911. She attended Bennett Junior College in Millbrook, N.Y., and married Malcolm S. Mackay in 1930. They moved from New Jersey to Minneapolis in 1952 when Mr. Mackay became executive vice president of Northwest Airlines.
She is pre-deceased by her husband and by her son, Malcolm S. Mackay, III. She is survived by three children, Helen M. Bradford of San Francisco, Jean M. Irwin of Toronto, and John S. Mackay of Wayzata, Minn., and by eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A private family memorial service will be held at a future date.

ANGIE KAPOR JUROVICH
What can we add to the many articles that have described Angie Jurovich? In the past 15 to 20 years, her colorful life has been featured in a number of state newspapers. Angeline (Angie) Kapor was born in Red Lodge Dec. 16, 1910 to immigrant parents. One Billings Gazette article referred to her as a “coal miner’s daughter.”
She married young to Velisha Jurovich, also a coal miner. She became the family breadwinner when he was disabled in a mining accident, leaving her with four small children to support, as well as an invalid husband to care for. After saving money raising chickens, picking beans, milking a cow and feeding bachelor miners in Washoe, she was able to buy restaurant fixtures. Borrowing some money from a friend, she moved to Bridger and opened the New Bridger Cafe. She continued in the cafe business for over 60 years.
In addition to her family and business, she sponsored and participated in a women’s softball team that won state championships and went to nationals in 1941 and 1947. In 1999, she was honored by being inducted into the Montana Softball Hall of Fame.
While continuing in the restaurant business and backed by an eighth grade education, Angie began dealing in real estate. For the remainder of her life, she successfully bought and sold farms, ranchers and other property in Yellowstone, Sweetgrass, Carbon and Stillwater counties. The greatest compliment a person could receive from Angie was, “He/she is really a businessman!”
She was more recently known as the matriarch of Fishtail, where she operated the Fishtail Steakhouse and Aspen Lodge for over 30 years. After a life’s worth of experience, Angie could wait on customers, cook for them, clear the tables and do the dishes! There the local ranchers stopped for breakfast or coffee, working men commuting to the mine in Nye stopped to eat, or town folks on their way to pick up mail stopped for coffee, an update on the local news, or a lively Pinochle game. “A quarter a game, a dime a set” was the standing rule. Folks had better refill their own coffee cups if Angie was involved in a game!
Failing health forced her to give up the steakhouse in her late 80s, and she later moved to Billings. Here, her life ended Sept. 5, 2003. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three sisters and a brother, and an infant son.
She is survived by three sons and a daughter: George Jurovich (Maureen), Eugene Jurovich (Dolores), Robert Jurovich (Audrey), and Bernice See (Don), all of Billings; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, many friends, and her wonderful care family at Grand Park Vintage Suites. All of these people will miss her immensely, and are truly grateful for having had her in our lives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003 at Mayflower Congregational Church, with interment at the Bridger Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Grand Park Vintage Suites (G.P.V.S - Expressions) at 1221 28th St. West, Billings, MT 59102, or a charity of one’s choice.

JOHN ALBERT BARRETT
John Albert Barrett passed away peacefully in the company of family members in Las Vegas on August 28, 2003 at the age of 83.
John was born in Red Lodge, Montana on October 22, 1919 to Will and Margaret Sanderson Barrett, the third son in a coal-mining family of seven sons and one daughter. He was raised in Red Lodge before and during the Great Depression, which helped form his political, social and economic views.
John attended Lincoln and Roosevelt Grade Schools and graduated from Carbon County High School in Red Lodge, after which he entered the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) near Thompson Falls in western Montana.
In 1939, John moved to Los Angeles, where he lived with his aunt, working at Douglas Aircraft by day and also boxing professionally. There, he met Geraldine Nussbaum, the love of his life, who just happened to live next door. They were married on April 5, 1941 and remained a devoted couple for 62 years, raising a family of 6 sons.
John served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, returning to Montana in 1943 with his wife and first son. Over the next 15 years, John and Gerry had 4 more sons while John worked at various jobs in Bozeman, Red Lodge and Roundup, Montana as well as in northern Wyoming. John was a photographic assistant, creamery worker, derrick hand in the oil fields and movie theater manager, working hard to bring food to the family table.
In late 1957, they moved to Red Lodge where their last son was born. John and Gerry were trained in the restaurant business by Charlie Stevens at the Red Lodge Cafe. In 1958 they purchased the Highway Lunch (located where Whispering Pines Antiques is now) from Clara Meeks. They renamed the restaurant the Chuck Wagon Cafe, which they operated until late 1963. While in Red Lodge, John was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Knights of Columbus, and the Carbon County Democratic Central Committee, as well as being an active bowler. He was the Democratic candidate for the State Legislature from Carbon County in 1962, losing in a close race to Richard Nutting.
In late 1963 the family moved to Cody, Wyoming. There, John and Gerry purchased the Sportsman Cafe, which they operated until 1973. While in Cody, John also created and operated the Wyoming Trout Ranch, selling trout around the world.
In 1973, the Barretts moved to Billings, Montana where they owned and operated the Treasure State Luncheonette. They later sold the restaurant and John worked briefly for the Montana Department of Natural Resources as a water rights technician before they retired to Helena in 1976, joining three of their sons and a brother in that city. He led an active retirement in Helena until 1994, when he and Gerry moved to Las Vegas, joining 2 sons.
John’s values and beliefs were unwavering. He was a very devout Catholic, a staunch supporter of the trade union movement, a supporter of Israel, an advocate of tolerance and equal rights, and an active Democrat wherever he lived, including being an active campaign volunteer in dozens of local and state campaigns in 2 states. He was an amateur, Navy and professional boxer in his early years and also coached many Golden Gloves champions in the 1950’s. Like his father before him, he was an active mineral prospector. He had various interests, including boxing, gem polishing, fishing, horse racing, recreational gambling, and especially his grand and great-grand children.
John was a hard worker and loved God, country and family. His biggest source of pride was raising 6 sons and seeing them all college-educated and successful in their lives. He was an ethical and honorable man his entire life — a man of great passion, strong beliefs and steadfast loyalty.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Elizabeth, and his brothers, Eugene and Bud. He is survived by his wife Gerry; brothers and sister-in-laws Bernard and Helen Barrett and Jim Barrett of Red Lodge, Bill Barrett of Helena, and Pat and Janet Barrett of Cody; sons and daughters-in-law Steve and Janis Barrett of Bozeman, John and Teresa Barrett of Las Vegas, Evan and Gail Barrett of Butte, Bruce Barrett and Adair Kanter of Missoula, Mark Barrett and Maria Battaglia of Las Vegas, and Joe Barrett and partner Robert Fisher of San Francisco; grandchildren and spouses Kirsten Barrett and Jon Hypes, Erika Barrett and Eric Thompson, Juan Raphael Barrett, Genoa Barrett, and Eve Barrett, all of Las Vegas; Joshua and Kristy Barrett and Megan Barrett of Portland; Brendan Barrett and Siobhan Barrett of Butte; Ariel Barrett of Missoula; Jeff Barrett of Omaha, Nebraska, and Tracy Taylor of Ashland, Oregon; great-grandchildren Ivory and Jacen Thompson and Austin Barrett of Las Vegas, Jack Barrett of Portland, Saphire and Sage Barrett of Manchester, Michigan, and Nellie and Kaziah Taylor of Ashland; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
At his request, John’s remains have been cremated. Funeral services are scheduled for Red Lodge, Montana on Friday and Saturday, October 10 and 11. A Vigil and family visitation will take place Friday night at 7 p.m. at St. Agnes Church Hall. A Mass of Resurrection will take place on Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church. Burial will be at Rockvale Cemetery. The family recommends memorials to local hospice organizations. Messages of condolence can be sent to Gerry Barrett at 5242 Evaline, Las Vegas NV 89120..
