Clifford Philip Mockel, 88, of McMinnville, Ore., passed away July 17, 2002. He was born April 1, 1914, in Helena to Philip and Elise (Miller) Mockel.

Clifford lived with his family on a ranch in the Crow Creek Valley near Toston for 27 years. During this time he attended Gallatin County High School and upon graduation married Jessie A. Rasmussen of Bozeman. They owned the ranch for 15 years before selling and beginning farm machinery businesses in Townsend, Bozeman, and Dillon.

In 1958, the family moved to Fresno, Calif., where Clifford began a career in life insurance and real estate sales, until his retirement in 1985. Upon retiring, they lived in Sun Lakes, Ariz., and Tigard, Ore.

As a young man, Cliff and his brother, Heinie, enjoyed playing in a nine-piece traveling swing band for several years.

During his long, productive life, Clifford was vitally interested in community activities, politics, fraternal organizations, youth organizations and the Episcopal Church. He held many leadership roles in the Three Forks and Dillon Masonic Lodges, and Eastern Star, as well as Scottish Rite and Algeria Shrine in Helena.

While in Fresno, he served as president of Life Underwriters Association and the American Society of C.L.U. of Fresno.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Tony, Albert and Heinie.

Clifford is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jessie; daughters, Marilyn Mockel, Bozeman; Carol Jones, McMinnville; and Bette March, Cody, Wyo.; grandchildren, Kim Peterson, Peggy Ryan, Dawn Andrade, David Peterson and Brad Tolson. Mom loved making crafts and giving them away to loved ones or to the church at fund-raisers. She made a religious quilt that is hanging in her church, Bethlehem Lutheran. It gave us pride to see it there on Sundays when we were able to attend with mom.

Mom lost most of her eyesight several years ago and was unable to stay in our family home. She lived at Aspen View and Aspen Meadows and made many, many friends whose friendship she treasured. There will be so many people that will miss her because of her forgiving, loving heart and great sense of humor.

Instead of flowers, we are requesting donations to Bethlehem Lutheran Church for a memorial fund in Mom's name.
