CURTIS “CURT” BATES
Curtis “Curt” Bates, passed away quietly at his home near Roberts, Mont. on Wednesday, October 1, 2003, after a short but tough fight with cancer. Curt was born on Dec. 6, 1939, to Clyde and Lorene Bates at Ada, Okla., and he was proud of his Oklahoma heritage. He was married to Peggy Eaton in Shawnee, Okla., in 1958. Three children were born to this union, Darla, Connie and Todd. He married Louise “Lou” Wallace in Chadron, Nebraska in 1984.
He left Oklahoma in 1964 and began a long career as a U.S. Forest Ranger, starting in northern California. His Forest Service career took him to several western national forests, ending up as Forest Supervisor of the Custer National Forest, with headquarters in Billings, Mont. During his 30 years as a Forest Ranger, Curt became a strong advocate of horse use in the Forest Service, in particular the use of the Missouri Foxtrotter. He helped create a lasting impression of horse use in modern times. In addition to horses and other duties, he devoted many years to fighting forest fires, which culminated with the Yellowstone Fires of 1988, where he was a Type I Incident Commander. Curt was proud of the fact that he was in the Forest Service when the agency knew what its job was and wasn’t afraid to do it. He continued with his Forest Service career which ended in 1993 on the Custer National Forest. Upon retiring, he and Lou began raising livestock, particularly Missouri Foxtrotters, on their small ranch near Roberts.
Curt’s priorities in life were his relationship with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and his family and friends. He enjoyed the horses, ranch work and all outdoor activities, but realized always that his greatest achievement was the manner in which his life may have touched others and their walk with the Lord.
He is survived by his wife and soul mate, Lou, of Roberts; his parents, Clyde and Lurene Bates of Shawnee, Okla., daughter Darla Wade of Sheridan, Wyo. and her sons, Travis, Brian, Zac and Matthew; daughter Connie (Ron) Wedemeyer of Bakersfield, Calif. and their daughters Sydne and Lexi; son Todd (Amber) Bates of Heber City, Utah, stepdaughter Kelli (Brent) Theyson of Littleton, Colo.; and stepson Kevin (Wendy) Wallace and their son, Blake of Littleton, Colo., and stepson Kirk Wallace of Denver, Colo. Also surviving are Curt’s sister, Barbara (Kurt) Buntin of Duke, Okla., and brother Robert (Dahna) Bates of Albuquerque, N.M., two nieces and one nephew, and one great-granddaughter.
In addition to these relatives, whom he loved very much, he is survived by many, many friends, who at times were as close as family.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 4 at the Edgar School Gymnasium, followed by a cowboy procession to Rockvale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carbon County Hospice or Gideons, Int.
Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel, was in charge of arrangements.
