Joanne Ruth Carlson Madden
Joanne Ruth Carlson Madden, 77, of Terry died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, at Holy Rosary Healthcare in Miles City with her girls by her side.
She was born on Nov. 7, 1934, in Miles City to Hilding “Moe” and Borghild “Borgie” Undem Carlson. She attended school in Terry and graduated in 1952.
She attended Eastern Montana College in Billings and graduated in 1954 with a teaching certificate and later went back and completed her bachelor of science degree in elementary education/reading.
She taught in Bridger, Sidney, Belle Creek and Terry.
In 1957, she and William J. Madden were married and together they had three daughters; Kay, Kristie and Paula. They lived with their daughters on a ranch near Ridge and later moved to Belle Creek.
In 1978, she and the girls moved to Terry and she fulfilled her true calling when she worked for Mrs. Wilson in the first grade. She found great pleasure in working with young learners. She had a real gift for helping students find success in learning.
Later she accepted a position at the Prairie County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service office. She enjoyed working with producers and establishing long term friendships with them.
She retired in 2004 and devoted her time to the Prairie County Museum and her grandchildren. She loved nothing more than preserving and promoting the history of Prairie County.
In 1990 she fulfilled a life-long dream when her brother, John took her to Norway to visit family. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage and ancestry.
For the past 20 years she followed the Terry Terriers’ school activities. She was extremely proud of her grandchildren and their academic and athletic accomplishments. More than anything “Granny” had an overwhelming love and adoration for her grandchildren. They were the center of her world and she was the center of theirs too.
Her survivors include her daughters, Kay, (Tom) Pisk, Kristie (Kurt) Ratz and Paula; four grandchildren, Sarah, Taylor and Trevor Pisk, and Meliena Ratz; her sister-in-law, Hilary Carlson; and nieces, Ingrid Carlson Barrier and Christina Carlson Crowley; as well as many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Moe and Borgie; and brother, John.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church in Terry. Private family burial will be in the Prairie County cemetery.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Prairie County Museum or the Community Presbyterian Church in Terry.

Rosella Marie Webster Hale
Rosella Marie Webster Hale, 77, died Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, in the Holy Rosary Extended Care Facility in Miles City.
She was born in Tie Creek in 1934 to Lawrence A. Webster and Laura Pierce Webster. She attended grade school at the Tie Creek County School and attended Ekalaka High School for the ninth grade, and then attended Custer County High School in Miles City until her junior year. In the 1960s, she received her GED in Miles City.
During her life she worked several different jobs. In the 1960s and 1970s she worked at Miles City Steam Laundry. In the beginning of the 1980s, she worked at Della’s Dress Shop and later she at the Custer County Rest Home. During the 1990s she worked at the Ursuline Convent.
She also had her own business in her home as a seamstress, sewing anything from children’s clothing to wedding dresses. She was an avid pool player, and known as Ramblin’ Rose by many.
In 1951, she and Eugene R. Tredway were married . After this union she married Keith Ehlers in 1966. She later joined Marion “Hooch” Hale in marriage on Sept. 10, 1978. In 1986 she married Don McDowell.
She was a member in many different organizations, including the Moose Lodge, the Eagles and AA.
Her survivors include her son, Lawrence Dale Tredway of Miles City; a daughter, Lorella “Lori” Reed of Miles City; sisters, Mary (Clarence) Cridland of Miles City, and Lola M. “Chic” Reser of Worden; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
Shie is preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Laura Webster; a son, Monte E. Tredway; a brother, Larry C. Webster; a sister, Lorena A. Childers; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.
Celebration of Life will be Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Private burial services will be later.

Olive May Hilderman
Olive May Hilderman, 92, of Miles City died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011, at TLC in Miles City.
Mrs. Hilderman was born on June 9, 1919, in Miles City, the daughter of Henry and Anna Marvel Loehr. She attended elementary school in Miles City and graduated from Custer County High School in 1938. After high school she attended college at Western Montana College in Dillon. She taught two years at Kircher School.
On Jan. 28, 1944, she and Harold D. Hilderman were married . Mrs. Hilderman worked at John Stockhill Jewelers for a number of years and acquired many friends and skills throughout her employment. Mr. and Mrs. Hilderman owned and operated Gingers Cleaners for 20 years.
Mrs. Hilderman was a member of the Town and Country Club. She loved playing golf on women’s league and with her husband. She was an avid bridge player and played right up until the end. She swapped books with many of her friends and read every night. Mrs. Hilderman met with her close friends every Saturday for coffee and truly enjoyed her “girl” time.
Mrs. Hilderman’s biggest passion in life was her family. She doted on everyone and never complained. She couldn’t get enough of her grandchildren and more recently loved every moment she could spend with her great-grandchildren.
Her survivors include three sons: Richard (Karol ) Hilderman of Liberty, S.C., Larry (LeAnn) Hilderman of Libby and Thomas Hilderman of Miles City; a brother: Helmer Loehr of Sacramento, Calif.; and five grandchildren: Scott, Kris (Rich), Jennie (Mike), Stacie (Kent), Jake. She also was blessed with eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Henry and Anna; a brother: Bob Loehr; and a sister: Helen Ryan.
Visitation will be Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, from 1 to 6 p.m. with the family present from 4 to 6 p.m. Funeral Services will be Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Burial will follow next to her husband, Harold, in the Eastern Montana Veterans cemetery.

Ralph M. Nybo
Ralph M. Nybo, 85, of Miles City died Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care Facility in Miles City with his wife, Ida, of 60 years at his side.
Mr. Nybo was born June 29, 1926, to Casper and Inga Nybo. He graduated from Custer County High School in 1944. Mr. Nybo enjoyed playing baseball for the Pine Hills team, where lifelong friendships remain.
He and Ida Fredricksen were married in 1951 and he quickly turned the town girl into a cowgirl. They farmed and ranched together, raising registered Polled Hereford cattle and registered quarter horses. Their racehorses won several big derbys around the state.
Mr. Nybo was an original member of the Cow Capital Turf Club. He also served on the boards of: Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, Soil Conservation, and was a member of the Eagles Lodge.
As a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Nybo were dedicated to family, friends and neighbors where their hospitality was unmatched.
After a stroke in 1986, Mr. Nybo was grateful for Mrs. Nybo, and many friends who enabled him to remain on the ranch and carry on the legacy of raising horses. Although his physical body limited him, this Norwegian could not be beaten at cribbage, and he enjoyed beating the best of his friends.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral Services will be Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at 10 a.m. at the chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Burial will follow in the Custer County cemetery.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Wake Up & Lace Up or the charity of one’s choice.

Bruce Alan Brown
Bruce Alan Brown, 78, of Miles City, formerly of Terry, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, at his home in Miles City.
Mr. Brown was born in Ismay on June 1, 1933, the son of Arthur and Pauline Sheldon Brown. He grew up on the Brown ranch southeast of Terry. He attended country school then Terry High School where he graduated as valedictorian in 1951.
He enlisted in the United States Navy on April 14, 1952, where he was an Air Controlman 2nd Class. He was honorably discharged on March 23, 1956.
Mr. Brown and Jean Trask were married on Sept. 20, 1952, in Norman, Okla. They then moved back to the family farm at Terry where he farmed and ranched until 1966.
He then worked for the Farmers Union Trading Company in Terry until 1984 when he started Bruce Brown Builders, which he owned and operated until 2008 when he retired.
Mr. Brown enjoyed carving leather and was a master leather craftsman.
He was an active member of the Community Presbyterian Church for 60 years and served as an Elder and Trustee. He was a Blue Lodge Mason, Royal Arch Mason, member of the Prairie County Soil Conservation Service Advisory Board, Prairie County Selective Service Board, Terry School Board, Prairie County Fair Board, Terry Chamber of Commerce, Montana Grain Growers and Montana Stockgrowers.
His survivors include his wife: Jean Brown of Miles City; his children: Rebecca Brown of Honolulu, Hawaii, Alana Bryan of Puyallup, Wash., Kimberly (Vince) Fontana of Arvada, Colo., Cameron (Rhonda) Brown of Miles City and Melissa (Ed) Adams of Belgrade; a brother: Philip Dale (Joan) Brown of Terry; 27 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jean Reimer.
A prayer service will be Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at 6 p.m. in Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Terry. Funeral services will be Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church in Terry. Interment will follow in Veterans Section of the Prairie County cemetery in Terry.
Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home of Terry is in charge of the arrangements.

Bertha Schefer
Bertha Eugenia Schefer, 92, of Great Falls, died of natural causes Sunday, November 13, at Peace Hospice.
A service will be held Thursday the 17th at 2:00 p.m. at in the Rose Room of Croxford Funeral Home.
Bertha was born on May 20, 1919, in Rock Springs, Montana, to Henry and Elizabeth Bickel, the eighth of nine children. She graduated from Cohagen High School and moved to Miles City to attend and graduate from Holy Rosary Hospital School of Nursing.
She married John Schefer in 1940 and they moved to Great Falls in 1950 where she worked as a registered nurse at the Great Falls Clinic, private duty, and the Columbus Hospital retiring in 1978.
She moved to the Eagles Manor in 2000 where she resided until shortly before her death. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.
She also belonged to the Eagles Auxiliary and Flower Growers in Great Falls.
Bertha is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Herndon of Sebring, Florida and Mary Rose of Henderson, Nevada, 6 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband John Schefer.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Peace Hospice of Great Falls.

Catherine M. "Tootie" Burnett
Catherine M. “Tootie” Burnett, 88, of Miles City died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at the Holy Rosary Healthcare in Miles City.
Mrs. Burnett was born in Miles City on Sept. 15, 1923, the daughter of Duncan and Ava McDonald. She attended schools in Miles City, graduating from Custer County District High School.
Following her schooling, she worked for the Civil Service, working in Seattle and southern California.
She met and married James L. Burnett on June 3, 1944, at the Brushnell Army Hospital in Brigham City, Utah. They lived in Missouri for a short time until moving to Miles City in the 1940s, making their home there until the time of her death.
She lived every moment of her life dedicated to her family.
Her survivors include a son, Jim Burnett of Miles City; two daughters, Ava (Kenny) Boschee of Miles City and Jodie Rhodes of Spring, Texas; a brother, Babe (Carol) McDonald of Cohagen; three grandchildren, Kevin Boschee of Miles City, Catherine Ann Rhodes and Colin James Rhodes, both of Spring, Texas; and one great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Rose Boschee of Miles City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James; and two brothers, Duff McDonald and Potts McDonald.
Although Mrs. Burnett loved Montana and spent most of her life here, she never cared for long the winters. She loved spring when the grass turns green and the lilacs are in full bloom, so her family will have a celebration of her life in May of 2012. She will be laid to rest with her husband and love of her life of 65 years in the Eastern Montana State Veterans cemetery in Miles City.
Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City is in charge of the arrangements.
Her service date and times will be announced closer to the time.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the family and will be forwarded to the Disabled Veterans of Montana, serving our country since Sept. 11, 2001, or the charity of one’s choice.

Evelyn "Evie" Leo Jennings
Evelyn “Evie” Leo Jennings, 93, of Billings, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2011, at St. John’s Lutheran Nursing Home.
The daughter of Sam and Mary Leo, she was born Sept. 13, 1917, in Miles City.
She married Tommy Jennings in Portland, Ore. He preceded her in death in 1969.
Mrs. Jennings worked as an office clerk for GAF Corporation until retiring in 1982 and moving to Billings to be closer to family.
She had made her home at St. John’s Lutheran Nursing Home in Billings since 2004.
Her survivors include her brother, Pete Leo of Miles City; and nine nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy; her parents; three sisters, Mary Jurica, Lena Berry and Stella Banks; and one niece.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31. 2011, in the Ocee Johnson Chapel at St. John’s Lutheran Nursing Home. She is to be interred with her husband in the Willamette National cemetery, Portland, Ore.
Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary has charge of cremation.

John Edward Kennedy
September 19, 1943 to August 12, 2011
John (Jack) Kennedy was born in Miles City, Montana. The only child of Edward and Mairi Kennedy. Jack was raised by his paternal grandmother and graduated from high school in Miles City.
Following graduation Jack enlisted in the United States Navy and served honorably for the next 21 years. He saw service in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He was a qualified Combatant Swimmer (Seal). Jack was a part of the recovery team (aboard the USS Wasp) for the Gemini 6 mission whose Command Pilot was the Commander Wally Shirra, USN. Jack later served in the Vietnam War seeing action in the Mekong Delta where he was awarded two Navy Commendation Medals w/combat “V” for valor, the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon and many other awards. Jack honorably retired from military service on September 16, 1985.
Jack and his mother Mairi were reunited following Jack’s military service and she moved to Coronado, California to live with him. Jack was preceded in death by his mother. Both will rest together at the Custer County cemetery in Miles City, MT.
