Marianne Louise Cooley Hagedorn Hyatt
Marianne Louise Cooley Hagedorn Hyatt died at St. John’s Living Center in Jackson, Wyo., on Monday, July 23, 2012. The longtime Broadus resident had moved to Jackson in August 2011 from the Powder River Manor in Broadus, to be near her daughter, Emily.
Mrs. Hyatt was born on Dec. 18, 1940, in Lame Deer to Margaret Groombridge and Alvie Cooley. When she was a small child her family moved to the Moorehead area where she attended grade school until the family moved to Broadus in the early 1950s. She graduated from high school in Broadus in 1958 and attended Black Hills State University is Spearfish, S.D., that summer so she could teach in rural schools that fall. She taught in several rural schools over the years and earned a bachelor’s degree from BHSU in 1972.
In 1961 she married Wayne Hagedorn and they lived in Broadus until his death in 1979. Mr. and Mrs. Hagedorn welcomed their only child, Emily, into their lives in 1973.
In 1983 she married Leroy Hyatt who shared her love for the outdoors and animals.
After a hiatus from teaching, Mrs. Hyatt accepted a position at the Broadus Elementary School in 1983 and retired from that position in 1998.
During their years of marriage Mr. and Mrs. Hyatt lived on a small ranch and maintained a band of sheep. She loved horses and horseback riding so there was always at least one horse on the place. During the summers they moved their sheep to the Gay ranch to help control the leafy spurge on the ranches’ river bottom. Mr. and Mrs. Hyatt loved the trips “up the river” to check on the sheep and to bask in the beautiful countryside they both loved so very much. She usually had a dozen or so bum lambs that occupied a lot of her time and she loved every minute of it. One of her greatest joys was to go for a walk through the trees lining the Powder River to observe the splendors of nature.
Mrs. Hyatt was a kind and gentle soul, always putting the needs of others ahead of her own. Her friends and surviving family members realize that her death will leave a vacuum that she filled with her caring ways.
She is survived by one sister, Sheila Trumps; one brother, Rodney; her daughter, Emily Hagedorn-Wegher (Matthew); her stepson, Jeff Hyatt (Val), and their daughters, Ashlee and Kortnee; and one step-daughter, Jody Hyatt.

Should anyone wish to make a donation on Mrs. Hyatt’s behalf, it may be sent to: Broadus Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 516, Broadus, MT 59317.

Wesley Ray "Wes" Gilbertson
Early Friday morning, Aug. 17, 2012, Wesley Ray “Wes” Gilbertson died and began the largest journey of his life. His destination was everlasting life, and freedom from the pain of his pancreatic and liver cancers.
He was born Aug. 26, 1946, in Miles City, the son of Elmer and Christine Kohones Gilbertson. He graduated from Custer County High School and attended college for a year before enlisting in the United States Navy with two lifelong friends, Howard Cummings and Larry Seaman. Mr. Gilbertson served on the USS Yorktown and the USS Hornet, taking part in the recovery of Apollo 8, the Vietnam War and the USS Pueblo Incident in the waters off North Korea. After his discharge he was employed by Philco-Ford working in Australia, Afghanistan, Bolivia, India, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan and the good old U.S. of A.
Tired of traveling, he went to work for the Milwaukee Railroad and later for the Burlington-Northern Railroad as an electrical engineer. A workforce reduction found him back in Miles City, where he and Nancy Kay Pering were married on Oct. 16, 1982.
Mr. Gilbertson became a licensed water, waste-water operator for the City of Miles City, a job almost as good as railroading. He retired June 30, 2008, after 25 years of service.
After he retired he made time to volunteer at the St. Vincent DePaul Store until his health prevented it.
Mr. Gilbertson enjoyed hunting, target shooting and was an avid fisherman, holding the state record for the shovelnose sturgeon in 1977. For him, a bad day fishing was definitely better than a good day at work.
He was a member of the Eagles Lodge, Custer Rod and Gun Club, American Legion and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
His survivors include his wife, Nancy; his sister, Pamella (Ted) Schreiber of Miles City; and his nephew, Paul Schreiber of Bozeman.
He also is survived by brothers-in-law, James (Jorja) Schreiber of Bigfork and Scott (Kathy) Pering of Miles City; and sister-in-law, Donna (Lyle) Schmidt of Cody, Wyo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Christine Gilbertson; as well as his cousin and best friend, Kenneth Kohones.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012, at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Miles City with burial following in the Eastern Montana Veterans cemetery with full military honors.
Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to St. Vincent de Paul or the R.O.C.K.S. (Raising Our Community Kids Safely) program, both of Miles City.
