Edsel O. "Ed" Harbac
Edsel O. “Ed” Harbac, 87, of Bozeman, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at the Edgewood Vista Retirement Community in Belgrade.
Mr. Harbac was born June 14, 1926, in Benson, Minn. His mother died when he was 6 years of age and he was raised by his grandmother, Virginia B. Finch. They moved to Knowlton in 1933. Mr. Harbac completed grade school in Knowlton and then they moved to Miles City. He graduated from Custer County High School in 1944. During his high school years, he worked as a meat cutter at local Miles City grocers including Sawyers, Reynolds, and Safeway.
He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1943 and was called to active duty in 1944. Mr. Harbac was assigned as a radio operator and navigator on B-29s and B-24s. He was stationed in Japan during the occupation and flew weather and other missions to the Philippines, Guam, Okinawa, Tinian and Saipan.
Mr. Harbac was honorably discharged in 1946 as a Staff Sergeant. He worked as a Brakeman and Conductor for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (Milwaukee Road) from Sept. 26, 1947, to March 31, 1982. He retired in 1982 when the Milwaukee Road ceased operations from Terry to the West Coast.
Mr. Harbac and his wife, Agatha, were owners/operators of the Miles City Dairy Queen Store from 1958 to 1962. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Knights of Columbus, Eagles and The United Transportation Union. He would tell that the luckiest day of his life was meeting Agatha L. Miller from Mott, N.D. They were married on Feb. 11, 1950, in Sacred Heart Church, Miles City. From then on, his family was the most important thing in his life.
He enjoyed playing cards, especially Pinochle and Rummy and found himself a winner a good share of the time.
Following the fracture of his left hip in 2008 and his right hip in 2012 his activities became very limited.
His survivors include his wife, Agatha; sons, Greg (Maureen) of Bozeman, Doug of Bakersfield, Calif., and Brian (Roxanne) of Sterling Heights, MI; granddaughters, Hannah and Rose; and great-granddaughter, Kathryn; along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and his sister, Beverly.
Visitation will be Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, from 1 to 6 p.m. followed by a Rosary at 6 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery with full military rites provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1579.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic School Endowment, 120 N. Montana Ave., P.O. Box 1016, Miles City, MT, or the charity of one’s choice.

Theodore Carlyle Morrow
Theodore Carlyle Morrow died in his sleep on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, in his home in Miles City.
Mr. Morrow was born Dec. 28, 1949, in Cadillac, Mich. He was more commonly known as “Ted” or “Uncle Teddy” to friends and family alike.
A hard working man, he prided himself on family, strong morals and his great love for playing the guitar with his brothers and friends. He was an excellent singer and played the bass guitar with the best of the best. He worked in the Miles City community as a master boiler operator for the Custer County Courthouse and Miles Community College.
Mr. Morrow loved all outdoor activities. In his free time he enjoyed fishing, hunting and hiking to lakes and reservations all over Montana.
He came from a large family of nine siblings: Mick, Ward, Fred, Maynard, Leonard, Linda, Kathy, Bunny and Jack. Mr. Morrow outlived his mother and father, Ruth and Fred Morrow. He graduated from high school as an all-star quarterback. Not only was he smart and athletic, but he also maintained a full time night job at a local Michigan factory to help his mother support his nine siblings during the hard times after his father’s death.
Mr. Morrow ventured to Montana after some years, which became his permanent home after building a family and career in the local area. He was blessed with five children: Molly, Tony, Teddy, Jinnjer and Micki, who he loved very much and was equally loved in return by all. He also was surrounded by many nieces, nephews and grandchildren who were always filling his house with laughter and love.
A viewing will be Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home. Services will be Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at 2 p.m. at First Lutheran Church. As the family wishes, a wake will be held outdoors at the Pumping Plant Park near the WaterWorks Art Museum after the services to celebrate the wonderful life we were all blessed to share with Mr. Morrow over the years. Those attending should bring a dish to pass and their own beverages.
Memorials may be directed to 1207 Roosevelt, Miles City, MT 59301, in care of Fred and Tammy Morrow.

Wilmer H. Pawlowski
Wilmer H. Pawlowski, 86, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, at the McCone County Health Center in Circle.
Mr. Pawlowski was born on Feb. 10, 1927, in Alpena, S.D., the son of Leonard and Lydia Bartels Pawlowski. At a very young age, Mr. Pawlowski lost his mother and was then adopted and raised by Irene Reinemer Pawlowski. Mr. Pawlowski was approximately one year of age when he, along with his older brother, Howard, and their parents moved to Circle. Mr. Pawlowski grew up in Circle and graduated from Circle High School in 1945.
He married Nora Nagle on June 11, 1951, at the First Lutheran Church in Circle. They farmed, raised sheep and cattle, and also owned and operated JJ’s Bar & Grill until they retired.
Mr. Pawlowski enjoyed trips to rodeos such as Pocatello, Idaho; Houston, Texas, and the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nev. He also enjoyed going to Laughlin and Prairie Nights where he would try his luck at the machines. When getting around got too tough, he enjoyed the mobility of his scooter he could rent. Sometimes you would find him out cruising the parking lot.
His survivors include his wife, Nora; his brothers, Wayne (Darlene) Pawlowski and Wendell (Mary) Pawlowski, all of Circle; his brothers-in law and sisters-in-law, Jim and Irene Siedel, Al and Helen Stirman and John and Ann Nagle; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and very good friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Lydia Pawlowki; his step-mother. Irene Pawlowski; his two brothers, Howard and Larry Pawlowski; and two sisters-in-law, Laurel and Edie Pawlowski.
Visitation will begin on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Circle with family receiving from 4 to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Circle. Interment will follow in the Riverview cemetery in Circle.

Thurman Manley "T.M." Bankey
Thurman Manley “T.M” Bankey, 98, of Miles City died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care Facility in Miles City, surrounded by his family.
He was born to Floyd Mervin and Harriet Irene Lyford Bankey on Aug. 9, 1915, at Austin, N.D. He attended the first grade school at Plevna then moved to Miles City in August of 1922, completing elementary school and graduating in 1933 from Custer County High School.
Mr. Bankey resided in Miles City for 90 years, seeing many changes in surrounding areas of Custer County and worked on numerous farms and ranches during his teenage years. Later jobs included working for the Montana Meat Market, Civilian Conservation Corps (3C’s) at Camp Nine Mile, Swan Lake and St. Regis.
He leased and operated the Conoco Service Station, which was located on the corner of Bridge and 5th streets, which later was the display lot for Boutelle’s Car Dealership.
Later, he went to work for Armour Creamery, owned by Armour & Company from 1939 to 1942, and then to driving truck, hauling livestock, grain, coal and other items, until going to work for the Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad from March of 1943 to Aug. 29, 1975, when he retired as chief clerk.
Mr. Bankey and Alma Sieler were married in Miles City on July 30, 1938. There were no children from this marriage. Thurman and Alma Bankey were avid bowlers and enjoyed the competitiveness of the sport, enjoying the time of being and traveling with friends to tournaments, and the laughter and stories they had when they came back to Miles City. Alma Bankey died in Billings in November of 1986 from complications after surgery.
Mr. Bankey and Irene Sloan Clark were married Jan. 5, 1989, and were married for five years, until her death in Miles City in September of 1994.
On Dec. 20, 2000, Mr. Bankey and Alice Spear were married in a ceremony at Tucson, Ariz., with family as witnesses. A reception was held for them, after they arrived in Miles City, in the hall of the First Presbyterian Church, where both were members. After marrying Alice, Mr. Bankey found that he needed to learn how to play golf, to have more of the precious time with his wife, which he did at the age of 86 years, and joined Alice as a member of the Town and Country Club.
Mr. Bankey was a 68-year lifetime member of the Eagles Club 885 and Past State President of the Eagles, 33-year member of the Miles City Elks Lodge 537, 68-year member of the First Presbyterian Church, a member of the Range Riders, a member of the Montana Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, and a longtime member of the Miles City Bowling Association.
He is survived by his wife, Alice (Hicks/Spear) Bankey of Miles City; step-sons, Richard Clarke of California, Terry Spear of Helena and Randy Spear of Billings; step-daughters, Kimberly Spear of Minnesota, Kirtlye Spear of Arizona and Allison Spear-Harmon of California; numerous nieces (one of whom he was given the honor to name Colleen Faye), nephews and step-grandsons and step-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his three brothers: Mervin Meredith, Alfred Milton and Victor Marcus; and three sisters: Fern Madeline, LaVern Martha and Irene Mildred (his grandmother came from England and started the tradition of having the middle name of a newborn start with the letter ”M, ” using the names of authors of England).
Visitation will begin on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Mr. Bankey’s family request that memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Miles City Youth Hockey Association, or to R.O.C.K.S.

James Phillip Rude
Funeral services for James Phillip Rude, 81, of Rugby, N.D., former Miles City resident, were Thursday morning, March 30, 2006, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Rugby. Burial will be later in the spring in Persilla Watts cemetery.
Mr. Rude died Monday, March 27, 2006, at the Heart of America Long Term Care Center in Rugby.
He was born March 24, 1925, in Willow City, N.D., the son of George and Helen Thorson Langlois.
Mr. Rude was raised in the home of his parents and moved with them at a young age to Overly, N.D., where he attended school.
On Dec. 14, 1944, he entered the United States Navy and was last stationed in Hawaii. He was honorably discharged on March 8, 1952.
Mr. Rude remained in Hawaii for several years before returning to Overly to work with his brother, Carl, at the Rugby Municipal Airport.
On April 16, 1961, he and Margaret Soby were united in marriage in Rugby. The couple made their home in Mohall, N.D., and over the years had lived in Minot, N.D., Rugby, Miles City and then moved back to Rugby where they had resided since 1990.
Mr. Rude was a member and past president of the Miles City and Rugby Eagles lodges. He also was a past member of the Sons of Norway Lodge in Miles City where he was a charter member and held various offices. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1861 and was a current member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Rugby.
His survivors include his wife, Margaret of Rugby; three sons, Dwayne, and his wife, Camilla, of Miles City, Dwight, and his wife, Pamela, of Ogden, Utah, and Douglas of Clinton, Utah; three daughters, Angela Craine of Syracuse, Utah, Arlyss Rude and Audrey, and her husband, Chad Edgerly, all of Rugby; two adopted sons, Tom Rude of California and Wesley Rude of Hawaii; and 14 grandchildren.
Survivors also include four brothers, Carl (Mildred) Rude of Renton, Wash., Donald (Doris) Rude of Bottineau, N.D., Thomas (Charlene) Rude of Rugby and Richard Rude of Overly; two sisters, Mary Bjournseth of Portland, Ore., and JoAnne Glessner of South Sioux City, Neb.; three half-brothers, George, Gene and Gerald Langlois; and two half-sisters, LaVerne Hardy and Lorraine Wright.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Rude; a sister, Genevieve Bundy; a half-sister, Loretta; and his parents.
Anderson Funeral Home, 119 SW 3rd St. in Rugby was in charge of arrangements.

Hilda Fiechtner
Hilda Fiechtner, 92, of Billings, formerly of Miles City, died Friday, April 14, 2006, at St. John’s Lutheran nursing home in Billings.
Hilda A. Hirsch Fiechtner was born Jan. 30, 1914, to Jacob and Annie Hirsch in Java, S.D. The family settled on a homestead in Crow Rock in 1915.
She and Emil Fiechtner were married on Nov. 18, 1932, and they made their home in Java for the next nine years. Their daughter, Janet, was born on Sept. 6, 1934, and in 1941 the family moved to Miles City.
Mrs. Fiechtner worked for most of her life serving the public in grocery stores, restaurants, the Penguin Shop, Miles City Steam Laundry and Friendship Villa.
She enjoyed being around people. Her favorite times were spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she loved taking care of whenever she had the opportunity. She also enjoyed working in her garden, traveling and visiting with friends over a cup of coffee.
Mrs. Fiechtner was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Miles City. In 1997 she moved to St. John’s Lutheran Home in Billings where she received special care and enjoyed the many devoted care givers.
Her survivors include her daughter, Janet (Fiechtner) Potter and husband Ray; granddaughter, LaRae (Potter) Weikert and husband Bill; son, Raymond Potter and wife Laura; great-grandchildren, Jeremy and Sarah Weikert, Kylie, Adam, and Nicole Potter; her brothers, Alfred Hirsch and wife, Eunice, Ted Hirsch and wife, Ruth and Elmer Hirsch and wife, Marge; and her sisters, Martha Finch, Ruth Thomas, Ruby Fields and husband George, and Gertie Fisher; and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Fiechtner was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a sister, Edna Hirsch Schmidt; and a brother, Edwin Hirsch.
Funeral services will be Thursday, April 20, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Miles City. Interment will follow at the Custer County cemetery
Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church or to the charity of one’s choice.

Florence "Tootie" Chabo
Florence “Tootie” Chabo, 69, of Edgewood, Wash., former Miles City resident, died Feb. 24, 2006, at her home after a valiant year-long battle with cancer.
She entered this world the first of twins born to Art and Sally Pembroke on July 12, 1936, in Miles City. She attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from Glendive High School in 1955.
She traveled around a bit from Alaska to Illinois and in 1960 moved back to Miles City. For a time she worked at the 600 Café, then began her career in the banking business at the First National Bank.
While working in Miles City she met Robert “Bob” Chabo and the two were married in December 1963. During the time that Mr. Chabo spent in Viet Nam, Mrs. Chabo lived and worked in Wyoming. Upon his return they settled in Puyallup, Wash., where they remained. In Washington she was manager of two Wells Fargo Banks, retiring in 1995.
Getting restless after retiring, Mrs. Chabo went to work part-time for Dr. Estelle Yamaki. She loved her work and continued until the time of her death.
Her survivors include her loving family, husband Bob, son Max (Jan) Chabo, daughter Valerie (Bruce) O’Neal, grandson Maxie O’Neal and granddaughter Caitlin O’Neal, all of Edgewood.
Also surviving her are her brothers and sisters, Harold (Val) Pembroke of Helena, Robert Pembroke of Gaylord, MI, Kay Cridland of Sand Point, Idaho, Mary Graham of Helena, Bunny (Rich) Nunberg of Wibaux; several nieces and nephews; and an abundance of dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her twin brother, Lawrence; and her mother and father, Sally and Art Pembroke.
Cremation and a memorial service took place in Edgewood. It was Mrs. Chabo’s wish to be buried with her twin brother, near her parents in Miles City, therefore the family will gather in Miles City in June to fulfill her wish.

Edward Robert Damm
Edward Robert Damm passed away on a beautiful spring day, Saturday, April 15, 2006, at his home with his loving wife, Dorothy, by his side.
Bob was born July 10, 1921, on the family homestead on Pumpkin Creek in Miles City, to Edward and Mildred Damm. There he was raised with his brother, Bill and two sisters, Ruth and Ruby.
In July 1942, he joined the Army to serve during WWII. Traveling from New York, he sailed to Scotland on the Aquitania. From there he went to London, England, to encounter many bombings. He went on to France, welcomed by the White Cliffs of Dover. After serving four years with the 368 Engineer Regiment Company, he returned to Miles City in November of 1945. He was a mechanic at Frontier Chevrolet and driver for contract mail carrier.
In 1950, he married Mary Mundell in Miles City, moving to Billings. In that union came three children, Robert Allan, Gary Bruce and Debra Kay. After 18 years of marriage, they divorced.
Bob married the love of his life, Dorothy Hungerford on March 10, 1972. From this union he acquired an additional son and two daughters in Dorothy’s children, Rita, Linda and Wayne. In 34 years of marriage with Dorothy, Bob experienced life’s enjoyment.
Bob is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sons, Bobby Damm, Gary Damm, Wayne (Lori) Hungerford, and daughters, Debbie (Mike) Pelensky, Rita (Keith) Murray, Linda (George) Knutson; his grandchildren, Nicholas, Natasha, Bryon, Kenton, Valerie, Tiffany and Kimberly; great-grandchildren, Rodney, Desiree, Wyatt, Shayla and Taylor; his brother, Bill, sisters, Ruth Iholts and Ruby Mann; cousins and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father; brother-in-laws, Harold Mann and Fred Iholts, and sister-in-law, MaryAnn Damm.
Services to be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 21, at Smith’’s West Chapel, 304 34th Street West in Billings.
Special thanks to the staff at Big Sky Hospice for their tender care and guidance. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice, VFW, or charity of one’s choice.
“If tears could build a stairway, and memories a lane, I’d walk straight to heaven and bring you home again. So long Dad, we love you.”
Kathy Jo Schneider

Kathy Jo Schneider, 58, of Miles City died Thursday, April 13, 2006, at her home in Miles City.
Born in Miles City on June 2, 1947, she was the daughter of Leo J. Knoll and Venancia (Etchemendy) Knoll. She lived in Miles City all her life and got her education here. In spite of being severely crippled with Rheumatoid Arthritis, she was a hard worker, never complaining, and always doing for others.
She had a natural gift for craftwork, and could take a bucket of pine cones, scraps of wood and a few flowers and turn them into a beautiful work of art. She and her friends, Karen, Julie and Dixie, would get together every year and have a craft party at Karen’s house. It was a fun time for the four lifetime friends.
Her survivors include her “Dad, ” Tom Nevland of Miles City; her son, Brock of Fort Collins, Colo.; her dog, G.G.; a large extended family; and her partner and soul mate of 27 years, Scotty McRae of Miles City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Venancia Nevland and Leo Knoll.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Calvary cemetery in Miles City.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made in Kathy Schneider’s name to the Rheumatoid Arthritis National Research Foundation, 200 Oceangate, Suite 830, Long Beach, CA 90802.
