Justin John Gunnare
Justin John Gunnare, 23, of Miles City died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, in Lame Deer.
Born in Parkston, S.D., on Oct. 27, 1982, he was the son of Leslie John and Kelly Margaret Burns Gunnare. He attended grade school in Campbell and graduated as Valedictorian from Silver Lake High School in Roseland, Neb.
Following graduation, he attended Black Hills State College is Spearfish, S.D., where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education. He then moved to Miles City where he did his student teaching at Custer County District High School and was the assistant women’s basketball coach with his uncle, Dwight Gunnare, at Miles Community College and he was head coach for the Miles City Colts Baseball team.
Mr. Gunnare accepted his first teaching position at the Lame Deer Public Schools where he was teaching at the time of his death.
He played American Legion Baseball for the Campbell County Cardinals where his father coached. Mr. Gunnare enjoyed watching the Seattle Mariners Baseball Team and the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
His survivors include his parents, Les J. and Kelly M. Gunnare of Campbell, Neb.; a sister, Mallary Ann Gunnare of Campbell; his grandparents, John and Lianne Gunnare of Wagner, S.D., Jack and Corrine Burns of Blue Hill, Neb., and Bertha Beck of Delmont, S.D.; his aunts and uncles, Dwight (Ann) Gunnare of Miles City, Deb (John) Rothenberger of Brandon, S.D., Lori Gunnare of Albuquerque, N.M., Chuck (Roxie) Burns of Monument, Colo., and Dennis (Shelley) Burns of Tillamock, Ore.; and his cousins, Aaron (Alissa) Rothenberger, Adam (Chrystal) Rothenberger, Rachael (Jeff) Brabant, Chris Gunnare, Danielle Gunnare, Jordan Olivier, Eric (Reyna) Burns, Josh (Brenda) Burns, Jessie Burns, Ian Mildenberg, and Mia Mildenberg.
He was preceded in death by his aunt, Kitty Andreson.
A Prayer Service will be Monday, Oct. 23, 2006, at 7:30 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Campbell. Interment will follow in the Trinity Lutheran cemetery in Campbell.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the family of Justin Gunnare.

Trace Allen Roberts
Trace Allen Roberts, precious little baby boy of Bruce and Jamie Roberts, was called to be an angel in Heaven on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006.
Trace was born on Sept. 12, 2006, in Miles City.
He is survived by his parents, Bruce and Jamie of Miles City; big sister Michael; grandparents Ken and Virginia Roberts of Miles City, Evelyn and Gary Barnaby of Wibaux, Charles and Kyna Rickett of Glendive, Borghild Le Noue and Betty Rickett, both of Laurel.
Trace also is survived by his aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by an uncle, Michael Rickett; an aunt, Kim Cosens; paternal great-grandparents, Clarence and Paul Compton and Lloyd and Mary Beth Roberts; and maternal great-grandparents, Charles E. Rickett and Arnold Gjerde.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, at 1 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery.
If friends desire, memorials may be made to the family of Trace, care of Bruce Roberts, 135 Meadow Lane, Miles City, MT 59301.

Viola "Vi" Cashatt Fluss
Viola “Vi” Cashatt Fluss died Friday, Oct. 20, 2006, from congestive heart failure and cancer.
She was born Feb. 4, 1920, to Charles and Katherine Sindelar on their farm near Allen. She graduated from Cohagen High School in 1937.
On May 17, 1939, she and Edward Cashatt were married . They were blessed with three daughters — Gail Laree, Linda Jean and Cathy Ann. During their early years of marriage Mr. Cashatt was employed in various states. They returned to Montana in 1945 and resided in Miles City where he was employed with the Milwaukee Railroad.
In 1960 the family moved to Terry with Mr. Cashatt’s employment with Fish and Wildlife. He died on Jan. 14, 1967.
She worked briefly at the Prairie County Hospital and the post office before going to work at the courthouse as Deputy Clerk and Recorder and Deputy Clerk of Court from 1969 until 1983, when she retired.
Jay Fluss and she were married Dec. 10, 1981. They enjoyed their time together until his death in July 1988.
Mrs. Fluss loved spending time with her family and her grandchildren. Her appreciation of nature was passed down to her family. She also loved all Terry sports and tried to never miss her grandchildren’s events. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and playing Scrabble. Mrs. Fluss will be remembered for her quick wit, ready smile and wonderful baking.
Her survivors include her daughters, Gail and Vic Lewis of Deer Lodge, Linda and Raymond Strasheim of Terry, and Cathy and Steve Jamruszka of Havre; four grandchildren, Paul Milner of Seattle, Christy Keto (Norton Pease) of Havre, Kerri Strasheim of Belgrade and Lynn Strasheim of Missoula; and two great-grandsons, Kaden and Jolen Keto of Havre.
Other survivors include two sisters, Cary Zook and Tudi Jones; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church in Terry. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. at the Custer County cemetery in Miles City.
Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Terry is in charge of arrangements.
Donations in honor of Mrs. Fluss may be made to the Senior Center, 112 S. Garfield, Terry. MT or the Prairie Community Hospital, 312 S. Adams Ave., Terry, MT 59349.

Charles DeForest Tall Bull Jr.
Charles DeForest Tall Bull Jr., 42, of Lame Deer, died Friday Oct. 20, 2006, at the Billings St. Vincent Hospital.
Moíohtaevotseva “Black Deer” was born Jan. 4, 1964, in Crow Agency, a son of Charles and Ella Walks Last Tall Bull, Sr. He grew up in the Lame Deer area and received his education at the St. Labre School in Ashland and in Kennewick, Wash.
He enjoyed beading, camping, games of chance and fishing. However, he most enjoyed visiting friends and family.
He was a descendent of the Traditional Cheyenne Dog Soldiers Society and was a member of the Lame Deer Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Survivors include his mother, Ella Tall Bull of Lame Deer; his adopted mother, Effie Bearchum; his sisters, Lucille (Ryder) White Hip, Martha (Steve) Larimer, Charlotte (Winslow) White Crane, Zipporah Tall Bull, Althea (Clifford) Foote and Rebekah (Kevin) Tall Bull-Perkins; his brothers, Matthew Emigh and Robert (Georgia) Brien, IV; an adopted daughter Shaylene Kills Night; his adopted sons, Clarence and Kenneth Brien; his adopted sisters, Magdalene Walks Nice, Lamona Red Neck, Diane Spotted Elk, Joyce Wounded Eye, Louella Fire Crow and Rachel Wooden Legs; his adopted brothers, Alonzo Walker and Ross Tall Bull; his good friends, Donald Seminole and Fern Brockie; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
His father and brothers, Phillip and Ronald Brien, preceded him in death.
Traditional wake services will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, in the Lame Deer Catholic Church Social room. Traditional Elk Horn Scrapers society ceremonies will be held following the wake service at the Ella Tall Bull Residence. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006, in the Lame Deer Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Interment will follow in the Tall Bull Family cemetery on Muddy Creek.
Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Rita Ilene Murray
Rita Ilene Murray, 79, of Miles City, formerly of Missoula, died at the Holy Rosary Extended Care Facility in Miles City surrounded by the love of her family on Friday, Oct. 20, 2006.
Mrs. Murray was born in St. Cloud, Minn., on Aug. 13, 1927, to Albert and Viola Lindsey Oeffling. She attended Holy Angels grade school and graduated from Cathedral High School in St. Cloud Minn.
She went to St. Benedicts and to General Hospital where she became an x-ray technician. She moved to Miles City to work as an x-ray technician at the Garberson Clinic.
On Sept. 19, 1949, she and William F. Murray Jr. were married at the Sacred Heart Church in Miles City. In 1973, the family moved to Billings and then to Missoula in 1975 where they lived for eight years.
After Mr. Murray’s death, Mrs. Murray moved to Port Angeles, Wash. In 1998, she returned to Missoula where she lived until May of 2006 when she returned to Miles City to be near her family.
Mrs. Murray was a devoted wife and mother. She loved to read daily, especially her prayer books. No matter where she lived, she was always involved in her church and Bible studies.
Her survivors include seven children: Thomas Murray of Tulsa, Okla., Susan (Dan) Hollowell and Tanis Eckart, all of Miles City, Eric Murray of St. Cloud, Lindsey (Karl) Henderson of Winona, Minn., Erin (Ezekiel Williams) Murray of Denver, Colo., and Rosemary Murray of Cheney, Wash.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Joanne (Kogie) Becker of Monticello, Minn.
In addition to her husband, William, she was preceded in death by parents and a sister, Donna.
A Funeral Mass will be Monday, Oct. 23, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City. Rite of Committal will be in St. Mary’s Catholic cemetery in Missoula on Friday, Oct. 27, 2006, at 2 p.m.
Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City is in charge of arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Alan Michael Dix
Funeral services for Alan Michael Dix, 54, of Pasco, Wash., formerly of Glendive, were Sunday afternoon, Oct. 15, 2006, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Glendive. Brother Guy Pontoriero officiated. Private family interment will be at a later date.
Mr. Dix died Friday, Oct. 13, 2006, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care Facility in Miles City.
Born May 8, 1952, in Glendive, he was the son of Dr. John Alan and Harriet Wears Dix. He was raised and educated in Glendive and graduated from Dawson County High School with the class of 1970. He then attended Dawson Community College in Glendive for one year.
On Nov. 6, 1971, he and Edith Pomeroy were united in marriage in Glendive.
Mr. Dix formed and played in musical bands with his friends when he was in high school. He later went on tour and resided in Portland, Ore., where he performed in the Portland Metro area.
He was involved in highway construction projects for many years. Mr. Dix was most recently employed working on the Hanford Project in Pasco until one year ago when he retired due to illness.
Mr. Dix was an avid musician who enjoyed sharing his musical talents with his family and friends throughout his entire life. He was a geological enthusiast who loved to collect rocks. While living or visiting in Glendive, he enjoyed spending time in Makoshika State Park where he spent many hours walking the hills and collecting rocks.
His survivors include his daughters, Chelsea York of Portland and Rosalind Dix of Pullman, Wash.; his mother, Harriet Dix of Glendive; his sister, Cheryl Dix of Bend, Ore.; his nephew, Justin Steiner of Bend, Ore.; his niece, Heather Steiner of Maui, Hawaii; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. John A. Dix in 1960.
Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive was entrusted with arrangements.

Ray Steen
Ray C. Steen, 75, of Miles City died suddenly Monday morning, Oct. 16, 2006, in the Holy Rosary Healthcare at Miles City.
Mr. Steen was born March 16, 1931, in Lignite, N.D., a son of Roy and Alma Bakken Steen. He moved to Miles City with his parents as an infant and received his early education in Miles City.
He enlisted in the United States Army in 1945 at the age of 15, where he completed his education. He served during World War II, the Korean Conflict and Viet Nam receiving two Purple Hearts.
Following his military retirement in 1969, he returned to Viet Nam as a civilian fire chief from 1969 to 1971. In 1972, he began work for the Pine Hills School and was employed until his retirement in 1996.
Mr. Steen and Neva Jo Howard were married on Feb. 6, 1976, and the couple made their home in Miles City. Mrs. Steen died in 2006.
He was a member of the Lutheran Church, a past member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
His survivors include two step-daughters, Donna Jo Hotaling/Kline of Shelby and Debra Ann Brott of Plevna; a step-son, James Nelson of Miles City; one sister, Carol Sims of California; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Arleen Dodd and Joan Hagen; and two brothers, Leroy and Art Steen.
Cremation will take place in the Bullis-Graves Eastern Montana Crematory. Memorial services are planned at a later date.
Bullis-Graves Memorial Chapel of Miles City has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Glenn Chapin
Services for Glenn Willis Chapin, 82, of Bartlesville, Okla., former Miles City resident, were held Tuesday morning, Oct. 10, at the First Presbyterian Church in Owasso, Okla., under the direction of Mowery Funeral Services.
Mr. Chapin died at 1:45 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 6, 2006.
He was born March 20, 1924, to William C. and Elva M. Nessley Chapin in Spokane, Wash. He later moved to Miles City, graduating from Custer County High School in 1941.
Mr. Chapin joined the United States Navy two days after graduation and served as a naval aviator until his honorable discharge in 1946.
On April 14, 1945, he and Bettimae Barton of Ottumwa, Iowa, were married .
Mr. Chapin was employed for 11 years with John Deere Ottumwa Works before accepting a position with John Morrell & Company where he served for 15 years as a machine shop supervisor until his promotion and transfer to Arkansas City, Kan., as the plant maintenance supervisor.
His first wife preceded him in death on Sept. 21, 1975.
On Aug. 17, 1976, he married Helen Dings in Arkansas City, Kan. Shortly thereafter, he was transferred to the John Morrell & Co. plant in Estherville, Iowa, where he served as plant maintenance supervisor for seven years until the plant closed.
In 1983, he took a job with Bar-S Foods in Clinton, Okla., working there until 1986 when he retired and moved to Owasso. His second wife preceded him in death on Jan. 21, 2006.
Survivors include four daughters: Pamela Whitt, Julie Rosenberg, Jody Arnett and Robyn Ragan; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step-sons; one step-daughter; six step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents and a step-son.
A memorial has been established with the Parkinson’s Foundation. Contributions may be made through Mowery Funeral Services, Owasso, Okla., phone 1-918-272-6244.

Izola Delma Smebakken Evenson
Izola Delma Smebakken Evenson, 79, of Spearfish, S.D., a member of the Southeastern Montana Fiddlers out of Miles City, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006, at the Meadowbrook Manor in Rapid City, S.D.
She was born July 8, 1927, at Pleasant Ridge, S.D., to Gilbert and Lodie Sembakken. Mrs. Evenson was baptized and confirmed at Rural Rosebud Lutheran Church south of White Butte, S.D.
She and Clarence Evenson were married in St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Lemmon, S.D., on Dec. 3, 1944. The couple lived near Lemmon until moving to rural Lead, S.D., in September 1949.
In 1963, she and her husband moved to Spearfish, S.D., and later owned and operated I.C. Upholstery for 22 years.
She was a longtime member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Spearfish. In addition to being a member of the Southeastern Montana Fiddlers, Mrs. Evenson also was active in the Modern Mothers Club, the Moose Club and the Eagles women’s organizations. She was a life member of the Sons of Norway.
Her survivors include her daughter, Doris Ann Werlinger, and her husband, Pius, of Rapid City, and their children, Debra Ann Melton and her husband Tony and their children, Kayla Ann and Amanda Renee, and Michael Raymond Berry and his wife DaLynn; her brothers, Albert (Kay) Smebakken of Gillette, Wyo., and Glenn Smebakken and Max Smebakken, both of Lemmon, S.D.; her sister, Grace Baumeister of Lemmon; her brothers-in-law, Melvin (Esther) Evenson of Lemmon and Raymond (Eleanor) Evenson of McIntosh, S.D.; her sisters-in-law, June (Albert) Maier of Morristown, S.D., and Lillian (John) Bridges of Wichita, Kan.; and her special friends, Ray Anderson, Janice Kerpan and the Marty Huckins family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; her parents; two sisters; one brother; and one baby grandson.
Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. in the Aldinger Funeral Home, 611 Dahl Rd. in Spearfish, S.D., with Rev. Herbert Cleveland and Rev. Ken Fouty officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill cemetery in Spearfish.
