Margaret "Maggie" Sisson
Margaret “Maggie” Sisson was born to Mary and William Bucklely in Roundup on Jan. 3, 1917. She had a peaceful death surrounded by her loving family and caregivers at the Legacy Adult Home in Kennewick, Wash., on Monday, Jan. 22, 2007.
She was a passionate educator who taught in numerous Montana schools. While teaching in a one-room school she met the love of her life and married Edgar Sisson. Together they owned and managed a ranch at Geyser. They had four children.
After the death of Edgar, the ranch was sold, and Mrs. Sisson pursued her passion for education and completed her master’s degree.
She taught in Puerto Rico then returned to Montana where she continued her career as an educator.
Mrs. Sisson had a vibrant personality and a love for travel, as she traveled throughout the world. She will be remembered for her brilliance, quick wit, and unbelievable generosity. She had the ability to converse with anyone because she knew no stranger.
After her retirement from public school, she worked diligently as a Legacy Legislator, and as a tutor and teacher for individuals attending the Miles City Mental Health Day Treatment. For her volunteered services she was honored with a crown, throne and cape and declared “Queen for a Day.” A few weeks prior to her death she was asked what she would be taking with her on her next journey. Her reply was “Love, all we can take is love.” She lived the word and we shall always feel that warmth of her loving presence and be ever so grateful for her teachings. She is our “Queen for Life.”
Her survivors include her children, Linda Chernisky of Fairfax, Va., Billie Lape of Richland, Wash., and James “Buck” Sisson of Star, Idaho; her six grandchildren who will remember her as a driving instructor, international tour guide and as the fun grandmother; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Billie Stenson of Edmonds, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar; and her son, John Willis.
Mrs. Sisson was cremated by the Neptune Society in Spokane, Wash.
The celebration of her life was held on the banks of the Columbia River on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007.

Mary Whitney
Mary Whitney, 82, of Miles City died Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, surrounded by loving family at her home in Miles City.
Mrs. Whitney was the next to last of seven children born to J.D. and Lulu Rifenberick Strait in Plevna on Dec. 12, 1924. She attended the TeeDee grade school on Fallon Creek northwest of Ekalaka and attended high school in Ekalaka.
After her schooling, she married Earl Whitney on April 1, 1942, in Miles City. They worked on ranches before moving to Hondo, Texas, where he was stationed with the Air Force during World War II.
After his discharge they returned to Montana and worked on various ranches in the Carter and Powder River County area. They finally settled on the Moses Mireau Ranch, which they purchased in 1970. In 1989, they moved to Miles City where she had remained since.
Mrs. Whitney was Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star several times at Harmony Chapter 127 in Ekalaka and at Custer Chapter 25 in Miles City. She was selected twice as Grand Officer for Montana Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and was also Bath Zabbia Temple 21 Daughters of the Nile in Billings where she served twice as an officer. She was also a member of Royal Neighbors of America and served as District Deputy.
She enjoyed crosswords, playing cards, dancing, sewing and crocheting. Mrs. Whitney was active in Sorrel Horse Patrol in Ekalaka. Most of all she loved spending time visiting with family and friends and having Christmas dinner with family at the ranch.
Her survivors include two sons, Joe Whitney and his wife Cheryl of Fallon and Dwayne Whitney and his wife Sheryl of Miles City; three daughters, Janet Barnhart and her husband Harold of Billings, Hazel Hendricks and her husband Jed of Gillette, Wyo., and Marilyn Schultz and her husband Kenny of Ekalaka; a sister Leota Elmore of Ekalaka; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and six step-great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Earl in 2000; her grandson, Jayson; three brothers, Francis, Marion and James; and two sisters, Bessie Strait and Marjorie Cline.
Funeral services will be Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery in Miles City.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Transportation Fund of the Al Beddo Shrine, P.O. Box 454, Miles City, MT. 59301 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Silby "Dutch" Herd
Silby “Dutch” Herd, 82, of Miles City died at his home on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, with his family by his side.
Mr. Herd was born on Jan. 16, 1925, in Carnegie, Okla., the son of Joseph and Vancy Delpha Harrington Herd.
He loved camping and traveling. Mr. Herd loved the outdoors, going for rides and going to museums. He loved to watch westerns and listen to Alison Kraus, his favorite singer.
Mr. Herd loved his family and friends and spending time with them. He loved looking at family photos and to sit and talk about the past, he missed his wife desperately. Mr. Herd was an outdoorsman, loved walking in the desert and chasing down rattlesnakes. He love mechanical work and watching ice skating.
He loved going to the tavern and having fish and onion rings and watching the people.
His survivors include his five children, Silby Lee (Lydia) Herd Jr. of Turlock, Calif., Donald Glen (Kimberly) Herd of Hilmar, Calif., Kenneth Wayne Herd of Turlock, Evalyn Louise (Larry) Harding of Miles City and Debra Ann Espolt of Kingfisher, Okla.; three brothers, Orby Herd of Ceres, Calif., Bob Herd of Hilmar, Calif., and Bunkey Herd of Turlock; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Herd; his parents, Vancy and Joseph Herd; his sister, Goldie Herd; and his brothers, Elmer, Sol, Thomas, Clyde and Johnny.
Graveside services will be Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at 1 p.m. at the San Joaquin Valley National cemetery in Gustine, Calif.
Services are under the direction of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home of Miles City.

Jack Frank Meredith
Jack Frank Meredith died unexpectedly of natural causes on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, on the ranch that he loved.
Mr. Meredith was born on June 9, 1929, to Carl and Blanche Manary Meredith on the home ranch at Pineview. He attended Cold Springs Country School in the Pineview area through the eighth grade. He lived with the Lester Guptill family in Custer while attending high school and graduating in 1947.
He worked on the family ranch, the Chevy Garage in Roundup, a ranch hand in the Big Snowy Mountains, Keene mine at Carpenter Creek near Melstone, Jinx Archer ranch in Musselshell, on the Delphia Canal between Roundup and Musselshell, and The Stanly-Holiday ranch north of Roundup before coming back home to the family ranch in 1964.
He married Cody Cartwright on Nov. 24, 1949.
Mr. Meredith was a member of the Musselshell Rodeo Association and he was a great supporter of the Old Timers Rodeos.
He loved ranch life and many people benefited from his knowledge of livestock and ranching. When a neighbor or friend was in need of a helping hand they could always count on Mr. Meredith to be there. Mr. Meredith enjoyed playing horseshoes and bowling. He enjoyed watching his children and his grandchildren in the sports they played and their school activities. Mr. Meredith was a portrait of a western rancher. He was no stranger to hard work.
His wonderful sense of humor, generosity and knowledge will be remembered by all who knew him.
His survivors include his wife Cody, Custer; his two sons, Roger Meredith and his wife Melva, Bozeman, and Monte Meredith and his wife Linda, Custer; his brother, Chuck Meredith and his wife Florence, Custer; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Blanche Manary Meredith; his sister, Margrette Neibaurer; and his grandson, Josh Meredith.
Memorial services will be Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at 1 p.m. in the Elks Lodge, 934 Lewis Ave. in Billings.
In lieu of flowers, memorials or donations may be made to Friends of Musselshell School, P.O. Box 14, Musselshell, MT 59059, Attn: Adair Radamacher or any charity of choice.

Judith Sampson
Judith Sampson, 64, of Miles City died at her home in Miles City on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007.
Mrs. Sampson was born on May 30, 1942, in Springfield, Ill., the daughter of Howard E. and Ruby E. Guy Myers. She attended grade school in Illinois and completed her GED at the age of 35.
On Sept. 23, 1961, she and William Lynn “Bill” Sampson were married at San Bernardino, Calif. Following their marriage they moved to Riverside, Calif. She remained there until 1997 when she moved to Miles City where she remained until the time of her death.
Her survivors include two sons, Dan Sampson of Miles City and Dennis Sampson of Farmerville, Ill.; a daughter, April Sampson of Miles City; a sister, Karen Jellison and her husband Elvin of Miles City; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, William Lynn “Bill” Sampson in 1991.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at 3 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Riverside National cemetery in Riverside beside her husband on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Sterling Kim Rhoads
Sterling Kim Rhoads, 47, formally of Jordan, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, at his home in Coalinga, Calif.
Born in Miles City on March 20, 1959, he was the son of Joe and Margaret Rhoads. Kim developed his life long love for horses at an early age while following the racing circuit with his grandparents, Ira and Minnie Brown.
As a young man, Mr. Rhoads enjoyed many local ropings and rodeos with his mother and step-father Margaret and P.T. “Spud” Cremer. He graduated from Garfield County High School in 1977, and briefly studied criminal law while attending college in Lake Tahoe.
His passion was breaking horses and working with livestock. The past five years he was employed by Harris Feed Lot in Coalinga. Some of his favorite pastimes were shooting sports, reading and traveling. Special times for him included Christmas and the annual Brain Fry with his family and friends.
His survivors include his mother, Margaret Cremer; his step-father, P.T. Cremer; his sisters, Jacque (Bob) Gregg, and Kathy (John) Eitzen; his step-sisters, Maureen (Dale) Schaak, Kelly (Tracey) Grow, and Patty Cremer.
Survivors also include his uncles, Sterling (Jan) Brown, Harold Brown, Fred Brown and Adrian (Faith) Brown; his Aunt Delpha Wood, Aunt Helen and Emily Milroy; his significant other, Georgina Branch; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by father, Joe Rhoads; his brother, Delbert Rhoads; his uncle, William Brown; and his grandparents, Ira and Minnie Brown.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at 1 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery in Miles City.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

William Casey Stroehman
William Casey Stroehman, 16, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, at his home at Otter.
Casey was born on Dec. 27, 1990, in Parkersburg, W.V., the son of Karen Gaskins. He was raised in Clarksburg, W.V., where he started grade school. He moved with his family to the ranch at Otter in September of 2000. Casey began his schooling in Broadus, where he attended Powder River High School.
He was active in football since the sixth grade. Casey enjoyed hunting, target shooting and was an avid gun collector. He also enjoyed raising bum calves, wrestling calves and listening to music, everything from old rock and roll to Celtic music.
Casey was good at fixing fence and was very artistic and creative. He also loved to spend time working on his old car, a ’76 Oldsmobile Cutlass.
His survivors include his mother, Karen Pino and her husband Tom of Otter; his grandmother, Mary K. Gaskins of Parkersburg, W.V.; a sister, Jennifer K. Galloway, her husband Matt and their son Maddox of Columbia, Mo.; a step-brother, Lorin Pino and his wife Jennifer of Bethany, Mo.; and a great-aunt, Phyllis Stalnaker and her husband Richard of Phoenix, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Katherine and Norval Tutwiler and his grandfather, Edward A. Gaskins.
Funeral services will be Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at 3 p.m. at Powder River Congregational Church in Broadus. Interment will be at a later date.
Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Broadus is in charge of arrangements.
Should friends desire, a memorial has been established in Casey’s name and may be sent to Karen Pino at HC 39 Box 40, Otter, MT 59062.

Theresa Shumaker
Theresa M. Shumaker, 50, of Billings, died at her home Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007. No service followed cremation.
She was born July 20, 1956, to Dorothy and Pedro Gutierrez in Hackensack, N.J.
She and Payton Jacob Shumaker III were married for 24 years. They met in Colorado and spent several years trucking before settling in Billings, where she earned, with honors, an associate of applied science degree in practical nursing degree at Montana State University-Billings.
Mrs. Shumaker had worked at St. Vincent Hospital for seven years.
She enjoyed gardening, making salsa and reading.
Her survivors include her husband, Payton J. Shumaker III of Billings; a son, Payton J. (Chandra) Shumaker IV; a brother, Michael Gutierrez; and a granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Tiffany Brooke Shumaker.

Mildred "Milly" Dunn
Mildred P. “Milly” Dunn, 94, passed away Saturday, January 13, 2007, at St. Patrick’s Hospital, Missoula, MT.
The daughter of Arthur and Louisa Dorr, she was born August 10, 1912, in Rochester, MN.
She grew up in Miles City, MT where her father ran the Boy’s State Industrial School.
Milly married schoolmate Dan Brady and raised their three children in Miles City. In 1963, following Dan Brady’s death (1962) she married another old school friend, Pat Dunn, and moved to Burlington, WI. Following the death of her second husband, she retired to Missoula in the early seventies.
A devoted Catholic, Milly’s whole life was spent in the service of family and community.
In the fifties, she was the quintessential “Soccer Mom” logging thousands of miles transporting youth sports teams across three states; AAU swim meets for daughters Susie and Keenie and baseball and basketball for son Mike.
Milly’s door was always open to the neighborhood children, attracted by her fresh baked bread, chocolate chip cookies and loving heart.
Her children learned volunteerism at her knee, helping the Dominican Sisters open and close up the classrooms of Sacred Heart at the beginning and close of each school year.
In her career outside the home, Milly worked for the Miles City Star and later as the Office Administrator for Culligan in Burlington, WI. In her retirement she continued her connection to Culligan by volunteering to work their booth at the county fair.
Missoulians will remember her as a member of St. Francis Xavier Church and a feisty and committed community volunteer, giving tens of thousands of hours to several local entities: RSVP, Montana Eye Bank, Bargain Box, Election Commission among others. Over the years her favorites were the University of Montana School of Journalism and the Engineering Dept. of Missoula’s City Hall. She was honored twice as the state of Montana’s Senior Volunteer of the Year.
Milly was a huge fan of the Grizzlies and loved Missoula’s Farmers Market. She considered it her “Don’t Miss” activity on Saturday mornings.
Milly is preceded in death by her parents: Arthur and Louisa; her siblings: Harold Dorr, Alice Hamilton, Elsie Pannage; her dear husbands, Dan Brady and Pat Dunn; and her beloved son, Michael.
She is survived by her daughters: Kathleen “Keenie” Boehlke of Frenchtown, MT, Sue Vos of Aurora, IL and her daughter-in-law Janice Brady of Havre, MT; her grandchildren: Craig and Daniel Brady of Sacramento, CA, Mark Oberhoffer of Missoula, MT, Wendy Magera of Helena, MT, and Adam Vos of Chicago, IL; her great-grandchildren: Blake Brady, Taylor and Zoe Vos, Heather and Sarah Magera; and loving nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to acknowledge the caring staff at Village Health Care, her home for the last several years, and to thank the team at St. Pat’s for the compassion, respect and dignity shown her during her last days.
Services:
A Memorial Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at 1:00 A.M. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, friends of Milly offer gifts of their time in her honor to a special organization of their choices. You may advise family about these gifts of service by email to: sue@enjoyaurora.com.
Traditional memorials may be sent to the donor’s choices as well.
