Sofia (Sophia) Bart
Sofia (Sophia) Bart passed away on Ash Wednesday, February 22, 2012, with her son and dear friend by her side. She was frequently visited by family and friends prior to her passing.
She was the most kind, giving, loving and respectful person. It was hard not getting attached quickly to her magnetic personality.
She was preceded in death by her husband Tony of 57 years, her beloved son Thomas and her grandson James.
She is survived by her sons and their wives, Zig (Cheryl) and Rick (Teri), and her grandchildren who meant the world to her, Candace, Kristina, Thomas, Eric, Emily and Amber; and her great-grandchildren, Blade, Tahya, Brynna and Shyley.
She was so very proud of her family and up until the last few years of increasing physical problems, rarely missed an event they were involved in. She was also a dog lover, adopting many over the years. Her beloved Dottie, which had been with her for many years and Ace were the last to enjoy her affection.
Sophia was born in Poland on October 18, 1920. She endured a very difficult life growing up there during World War II and was forced to work in Nazi labor camps. Surviving this, she then met and married her husband Tony in Germany in 1947 and then immigrated to America after giving birth to their first son.
Once in America, they ended up working on a ranch near Volborg, MT and soon moved to Miles City, where they lived for 50 years, then moving to Butte and finally Billings to be closer to their family.
She returned to Poland to visit two times since coming to America, the last time was this last Summer, 2011, traveling with a wonderful friend that had kept in touch with her since they first became acquainted. This trip was so very special to Sophia and it raised her spirits to where they should have always been. She was truly on top of the world seeing her homeland and relatives once more. God bless you Janice for asking her to travel with you.
Sophia spent much of her life as a homemaker, she made the best homemade bread, as well as stints as a waitress, hospital dietary worker, and later on many, many hours of volunteer work ranging from schoolroom aid to alcohol and drug rehabilitation support. She was also a member of numerous church organizations.
She was devoutly religious, but never made you feel uncomfortable if you did not believe the same as she. She was the most forgiving person, always believing in the best of you. She could not hold a grudge. She loved bringing flowers and plants to life and nurturing them. I remember that she always had the most beautiful flower gardens. Spring was her most favorite time of the year. She loved people and loved to talk with them. If she was visiting with someone, she was happy.
There could never be enough good to say about this amazing women, she loved company but was always concerned about being a bother. One of the last things she said to me during recovering from a stroke and fracturing her pelvis was “Is there anything I can do for you?”
This world truly needs more people like Sophia; hopefully those of us that have known her will have learned at least a little and share the gift we received by respecting others as she did. She was a true inspiration and will forever be with me. The best Mother anyone could wish for. I love you more, mom.
A memorial mass was planned for 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at ST. Patrick’s Co-Cathedral, located at 215 North 31st Street, in Billings, MT. Cremation is planned.
