Joseph Takenaka
Joseph Takenaka, 84, of Miles City, died at the Holy Rosary Extended Care Facility on Monday, March 19, 2007, after a short illness.
Mr. Takenaka was born in Miles City on June 3, 1922, to Kisaku and Minnie Takenaka. He was the youngest of three sons. The family lived in Thurlo where his father farmed for a living. In 1937, the family moved back to Miles City in order for Joe to attend high school. After graduating from Custer County High School in 1941, he joined the United States Army where he served during World War II.
Due to the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, the Japanese-Americans were unable to enlist in the regular Army so Mr. Takenaka enlisted in the 442nd Infantry Regiment, which were all Japanese American Servicemen. Their motto was “Go For Broke” and for the size of their division they were the most highly decorated unit in WWII. Mr. Takenaka was very proud of the fact that he was able to serve his country during this war.
On April 22, 1950, he married Thelma R. Martin and they lived in Miles City for all their married lives. From this marriage they had two daughters, Denise and Dianne.
After the war, Mr. Takenaka was employed at the Milwaukee Railroad Roundhouse for nearly 20 years. He then was employed at the Veterans Affairs Hospital for a few years and after receiving his engineer and boilermaker license, he worked for the Holy Rosary Hospital until his retirement in 1985.
Mr. Takenaka enjoyed fishing, gardening, reading, building projects and was a great cook. His greatest enjoyment in life was being near his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His survivors include two daughters: Denise Rohling and her husband Tom of North Richland Hills, Texas, and Dianne Meidinger and her husband Ken of Miles City; two step-sons: Edmond Martin and his wife Helen and Marlowe Martin and his wife Diane; a brother Dan Takenaka and his wife Mildred all of Miles City; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma; his parents, Kisaku and Minnie; and one brother, Harry.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 24, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery.

Bruce Bardon
Memorial services for Bruce Bardon, 61, of Sweeney Creek, former Miles City resident, were Thursday afternoon March 22, 2007, in the chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth.
Mr. Bardon died unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, March 19, 2007.
Born Sept. 16, 1945, to Marvin and Uva Bardon, he received his education in Rosebud. Following his education he continued to make his home in the Rosebud area, working for his grandmother’s ranch and for various other ranches in the community. He also worked as a mechanic at the Ford garage and drove a bentonite truck.
He and Diane Brewer were married June 3, 1967, and to this union their daughter, Tammy, was born. The family made their home in Rosebud until moving to the Ball Ranch on Tongue River.
They later moved to Miles City where he was the service manager at Goodyear before starting his own mechanic shop called Bruce’s Auto Repair. Up until the time of his retirement he was employed as a jailer for the Custer County Sheriff’s Department. He then moved home to Sweeney Creek to live and care for his mother.
Mr. Bardon enjoyed hunting, going on trips and motorcycle riding, especially riding his Honda Goldwing.
His survivors include his mother, Uva; his daughter, Tammy, and her husband, Stephen Vook, of East Helena; his brother, Dennis Bardon of Rosebud; and his grandson, Matthew Vook.
Mr. Bardon was preceded in death by his father, Marvin.
Services for Mr. Bardon were under the direction of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home, Forsyth.

Robert Francis Koehler Jr.
Robert Francis Koehler, Jr. passed away February 28, 2007 at Mercy San Juan Medical Center in Carmichael, CA after a year long battle with leukemia.
Born in Encino, CA on February 25, 1962, he graduated from Custer County District High School in Miles City in 1980.
He is survived by three children, his son Robert Koehler III of Reno, daughters Nicole Koehler and Cory Ehlert (Josh) of Lewiston, ID. Also survived are his two grandchildren, Jason and Peyton Ehlert, and his loving mother Marlys Berry and husband Mike Berry, one brother, Steve (Robin) of Antelope, CA, three sisters Yvonne Wroblewski (Craig) of Sparks, NV, Debra Jurad (Jim) of Lovelock, NV and Sherrie (Gene) Jones of Fallon, NV. He is also survived by six nieces and nephews.
Known to many as Bob, he was assistant manager at Sturgeon’s Casino, in Lovelock, NV for 15 years followed by three years as Operations Manager.
Bob touched others with his warm smile and gently demeanor. He had a great sense of humor and a genuine warmth that radiated to those he met. He will be dearly missed by his loving children, family and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on March 6, 2007 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on W. 4th St. in Fallon, NV followed by a burial at the cemetery in Fallon. He was laid to rest beside his dad, Robert F. Koehler, Sr.

Elizabeth "Chris" Neese Taylor
Elizabeth “Chris” Neese Taylor, 42, of Miles City, died Saturday, March 17, 2007, at the Holy Rosary Healthcare in Miles City.
Born in Billings on Jan. 9, 1965, she was the daughter of Tom and Doris Wallace Neese. She lived in Miles City for 10 years. She worked at the Town Pump, Dairy Queen, 4-B’s, Blimpie, 600 Café and Airport Inn.
She enjoyed painting, bead work and reading.
Her survivors include her daughter, Mandy Johnson; her father, Tom (Arlene) Neese of Brighton, Colo.; a sister, Barbara (Dean) Archambo; her special friend, Dale Gerber of Miles City; special family: Lou and Rick Underwood, Anna Friddle, Robert Dobson, Tamie Underwood, Jay Bonner, Walt Gusler, Lorie Peterson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will be held at a later date.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Chris’ daughter, Mandy Johnson, in care of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home, 1717 Main St., Miles City, MT 59301.

Marian Lynell Combs Willson
Marian Lynell Combs Willson, 87, died Monday, March 19, 2007, at her home in Miles City.
Mrs. Willson was born in Miles City on Sept. 28, 1919, the daughter of William and Edith Mann Combs. She attended school in Terry until 1930, when she moved with her family to the ranch at Stacey where she went to North Stacey school. She attended her first year of high school in Broadus. When her father died, the family leased the ranch and moved to Miles City where Mrs. Willson completed her schooling, graduating from Custer County High School in 1936.
She then attended Western Montana College in Dillon where she received her Teaching Certificate in 1938. Following her schooling, she returned to eastern Montana where she taught in country schools, until she married Leon “Pat” Willson on Oct. 25, 1942, at Miles City.
Mrs. Willson followed her husband wherever he was stationed throughout the war, returning to the family ranch near Volborg when he was discharged. She was an active partner in their commercial cow-calf operation and taught in nearby schools from time to time. In 1994 they retired to Miles City where she resided until the time of her death.
She was a 4-H leader and member of the Homemakers Club. She held a state office in the Farm Bureau. After moving to Miles City, she volunteered at Highland Park Elementary School, Holy Rosary Healthcare and was an election judge. She and her husband loved to travel, visiting many parts of the world.
Her survivors include a son, Preston (Sheri) Willson of Volborg; two daughters, Catharine (Wayne) Gamrath of Miles City and Marnee (Don) Willson-Broyles of Eau Claire, Wis.; a brother, Robert (Julia) Combs of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Norma Howard of Miles City; six grandchildren, Gwen (Kent) Gunther, Chris (Trish) Gamrath, Rachel Willson-Broyles, Nathan (fiancée Laura Weishoff) Willson-Broyles, Terra Willson and Valerie Willson; and six great-grandchildren, Anna, Tiffany, Chase, Jarrett, Kaleigh and Gage.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, William Combs and Earl Combs; and her husband, Leon in 1996.
Funeral services will be Thursday, March 22, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery in Miles City.

Lillie Anna Rath
Lillie Anna Rath, 85, of Miles City died at the Holy Rosary Extended Care Facility on Sunday, March 18, 2007.
She was born on her family farm in Watkins on Dec. 3, 1921, the daughter of Henry and Lydia Moos. She attended country schools at Watkins, but had to stay home from high school to help her family while her mother was ill.
Mrs. Rath worked for several area families, cooking for their family or crews of up to 40 men. She also cooked at the county farm in Miles City.
On Jan. 23, 1947, she married Lawrence C. Rath and they began their life together on a farm near Brockway. Mrs. Rath was a fantastic gardener and canned so much of the family’s food. A typical year of canning was to put up 100 quarts of both pickles and tomatoes, along with other canned goods.
She loved her chickens. Her laying hens would squat with their wings out as she walked by so she would stop to pet them. Each summer was filled with raising and butchering chickens and each fall with making homemade sausage. Mrs. Rath was a wonderful cook and was well known for her German Kuchen.
She was active in 4-H as a local leader for 18 years, chaperoned 4-H Congress and attended the National 4-H Leaders Forum. Mrs. Rath was very active in her local church, serving on the church board, serving as Sunday school superintendent, teaching Sunday school and playing piano for church service. She loved to play the piano and would fill the home with music.
Mrs. Rath was always busy in the winter time, not only filling the home with wonderful smells of fresh baked goodies, but she quilted beautifully, embroidered, crocheted and loved to make potholders and dish cloths. She always made time for one or two games of solitaire while waiting for the family to get home for dinner and she actually wore the spots off of a few decks of cards. The love of her life was her husband, children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her three children: Larry Rath and his wife Pat of Attleboro, Mass., Lucetta Steele and her husband William of Circle and Carol Beery of Colstrip; seven grandchildren, Wayne and Scott Snyder, Lana Steele Bentz, Joni Steele, Jason Beery, Justin Beery and Theresa Beery Bradford; and four great-grandchildren, Kaylee and Braden Bentz, Beau Beery and Ryan Bradford.
Her survivors also include three brothers, Edwin Moos of Circle, Albert Moos of Terry and Herbert Moos of Miles City; and two sisters, Ella Moos Fredrickson of Sheridan, Wyo., and Edna Moos of Terry.
Funeral services will be Friday, March 23, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Grace Bible Church in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Eastern Montana State Veterans cemetery.

Lyla Greni
Lyla Greni, 82, of Dickinson, N.D., formerly of Bowman, N.D., and Miles City, died Wednesday, March 14, 2007, at the St. Benedict’s Health Center in Dickinson.
Lyla Peterson was born May 22, 1924, in rural Bowman County, the daughter of Knute and Myrtle Olson Peterson. She was raised in Bowman and Slope counties and received her education at the Medicine Hills grade school and Marmarth High School.
On Nov. 20, 1941, she was united in marriage to Ole Greni in Baker After their marriage, they made their home on the Greni farm. In 1942, Mr. Greni was called upon by his country to serve in World War II. Mrs. Greni then moved back home with her parents to raise her daughter, Shirley.
After Mr. Greni returned home in 1945, they sold their share of the sheep ranch to Mr. Greni’s brother, Oscar, and moved to Miles City. The couple’s family grew as they had two more children, Kenneth and Sheryl.
They returned to North Dakota when they purchased the Harry Hinkle farm where they ranched and farmed until retiring in 1968. In 1969 they moved into Bowman. In 1998, Mrs. Greni moved into the St. Benedict’s Health Center in Dickinson and the family was very grateful for the special care that she received from the staff. Mr. Greni died Nov. 18, 1998.
Mrs. Greni was a member of the Bowman Lutheran Church while in Bowman. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and also a 4-H leader. She also helped out in the kitchen at the Sunset Home.
Family was always the most important part of Mrs. Greni’s life. She loved to spend time with her children and play with her grandchildren. She was always cooking in the kitchen or working in her yard. While on the farm, she raised bum lambs and chickens. She loved to dress up, dance and go shopping. She was a great gift giver and spent most of her shopping buying gifts for others. She enjoyed to crochet and was an excellent seamstress.
Her survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Sheryl and Bob Craig of Jamestown, N.D.; her sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Nadene Greni of Rapid City, S.D., and Kenneth and Lorell Greni of Dickinson; her son-in-law, John Hallman of Rosebud; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Survivors also include her sisters, Emily Stadheim of Reeder, N.D., and Eunice Taylor of Miles City; her sister-in-law, Muriel Peterson of Miles City; and her brother, Orville Peterson of Forsyth.
In addition to her husband, Ole, she was preceded in death by her parents, Knute and Myrtle Olson Peterson; her daughter, Shirley Hallman; her granddaughter, Angela Hansey; and her brother, Kenneth Peterson.
A Family and Friends Service will be Monday, March 19, 2007, at 7 p.m. at the Bowman Lutheran Church in Bowman.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Greni will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at the Bowman Lutheran Church. Reverend Galen Strand will officiate and burial will follow in the Bowman cemetery.

Albert Waldow
Albert Waldow, 89, of Miles City, died Saturday, May 12, 2007, at Holy Rosary Healthcare, 14 days short of his 90th birthday.
Mr. Waldow was born in Miles City on May 26, 1917, the son of Ernst and Amelia Zibell Waldow. He attended schools in Miles City.
He and Lydia Ohlhauser were married in Miles City on June 15, 1941. After being employed by the Milwaukee Railroad, Mr. Waldow was employed by Glen’s Standard Service Station for 15 years. He then went full time with the Milwaukee Railroad before retiring in 1980.
During the 1950s, Mr. Waldow helped construct the Holy Rosary Hospital. Following their retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Waldow built their home, along with helping build their children’s homes and taking care of their rental.
Mr. Waldow enjoyed working on a variety of projects and taking long walks. His family enjoyed his sense of humor and his “nonsense songs” he would make up and especially the support and love he gave his family.
His survivors include his wife, Lydia; son, Stanley J., his wife D’Arlyn, their son Ryan and his wife Michelle and their daughters Juliann, Kayla and Erin all of Longview, Texas; daughter Donna J. Flanigan and her husband Jake of Miles City, their daughters Shelley and her husband Michael Kilbon of Loveland, Colo., and Jolane Flanigan and her husband Gordon Chase and their daughter Adeline of Greenfield, Ma.; daughter Sandra F. Danforth and her husband Dennis, their daughter Dana R. and son Steven M. and his son Dakota B. all of Carson City, Nev.; daughter Linda J. Edwards and husband Dennis, their son Curtis his wife Donya and their sons Joshua, Michael, Zachery and Ryan; daughter Carrie Crow her husband Travis and their sons Tyler and Tanner of Reno, Nev.; daughter Christy Edwards and her fiancé Jeffrey Veradt of Reno, Nev.; and daughter Nancy A. Seright and husband Sandy their daughter Brook and son Brett all of Post Falls, Idaho.
Mr. Waldow was preceded in death by his parents, Emelia and Ernst Waldow; a grandson, baby Danforth; a granddaughter, Staci Waldow; and 15 brothers and sisters.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 18, 2007, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be Saturday, May 19, 2007, at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church or to the charity of one’s choice.

Borghild LeNoue
Borghild LeNoue, 84, of Laurel died Saturday, May 12, 2007, at her home in Laurel.
She was born in Rhame, N.D., on Oct. 22, 1922, the daughter of Bernt and Pernille Engesven Rud. She attended schools in Rhame then moved to Baker and back to the Rhame area.
In 1942, she and David Briggs were married and to this union two children were born.
She and Arnold Gjerde were married in 1946, and to this union five children were born.
In 1964, she married Eugene LeNoue and one child was born to this union.
She moved to Laurel in 1985 where she remained until the time of her death.
Her survivors include two sons: Monte Briggs of Kenner, La., and Darrell Gjerde of Billings; five daughters: Blanche Yocum of Newman Lake, Wash., Brenda Gjerde of Billings, Evelyn Barnaby of Wibaux, Charlene Nash of Miles City, and Gena Bartholomew of Laurel; three step-sons: Don LeNoue, LeRoy LeNoue and Bob LeNoue; 20 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eugene; a son, Wayne Gjerde; two brothers; four sisters; two grandchildren, Michael Rickett and Kimberly Cosens; and a great-grandson, Trace Roberts.
Funeral services will be Thursday, May 17, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery in Miles City.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
