Donald "Don" Ernest Goff Sr.
Donald “Don” Ernest Goff Sr., 65, of Miles City, died Saturday, May 5, 2007, as a result of massive heart attack while in route from Washington back home to his family in Miles City.
Mr. Goff was a caring, loving man born in Story City, Iowa, on Dec. 17, 1941. His parents, Ernest and Dorthy, had seven children; Mr. Goff was the oldest, then Floyd, Judy, Jerry, Carol, Jimmy and Bobby. With only a seventh grade education, he was very good with numbers. With little schooling, he self-taught himself by determination to be the best at anything and did so with great ease. His father started an elevator repair business and at the age of 16 this smart, hardworking man was the foreman for his father’s business.
While living Ada, Minn., with his family one summer at the fair Don met the love of his life, Janis Grieve. They soon married on Feb. 17, 1960, in Fort Hood, Texas, where Mr. Goff was stationed after enlisting in the Army. After his discharge from the service, Mr. and Mrs. Goff moved back to Ada where they started a family. Mr. Goff took great pride in his family as he worked hard and long to provide everything possible for them. He worked long hard hours in the elevator business, truck driving and in feedlots all over Montana, Minnesota and North Dakota.
He and his wife bought a farm in Fertile, Minn., and raised their family on the farm until 1981 when they permanently move to Miles City. Then in 1984 Mr. Goff was able to take all his hard-earned savings and start his very own elevator repair business. Along with his two sons and many employees who Mr. Goff considered to be family, he ran his business with great professionalism up until 1990 when his health forced him to sell out.
Mr. Goff, loving to drive the open roads and who was to stubborn to just sit around any longer, decided to venture along the highways and interstates again soon after his beloved soul mate died in 1998.
He is remembered as a dedicated, loving, religious man. Mr. Goff devoted his life to others, especially his wife and family. He treasured the holidays as his family all gathered together. Mr. Goff believed everyone should have someone during those times so it wasn’t uncommon for him to invite those less fortunate to join his family for the holidays. He cared about everyone and always put himself second. He was a very giving, honest man believing that if God provided you with more than you needed then help others and share among those who are not as lucky. There is so much to say about Mr. Goff and his life, but to sum it all up, he’ll be remembered by his family and friends as a very hardworking, caring, honest, loving, generous man who wanted nothing more than to see his family happy.
His survivors include his six children: Donald Goff Jr. (wife Kim), Randy Goff, Penny Bonogofsky (husband Bob), Cindy Raymond (husband Rick), Betsy Goff and Tammy Holmes (Keith); his grandchildren: John Goff (fiancée Jennifer), great-granddaughter Ellie; Joey Goff (fiancée Eva), great-grandson Joey Jr.; Cody Goff, Adam, Jessica and Kaydee Goff; Cassie Smith (husband Brandon), great-grandson Braxton; Jesse and Mandy Raymond; Layne Holmes grandson and special son.
On May 5th 2007 the lord called his servant Donald Ernest Goff Sr., who touched many lives and hearts, back to be reunited with those he was preceded in death by his soul mate, wife Janis, brother Jimmy and parents Ernest and Dorthy.
Funeral Services will be Thursday, May 10, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home.
