Lawrence Clifford Frederickson, 80, passed away Aug. 17 at the Liberty County Nursing Home in Chester.

Funeral services were held Aug. 19 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chester. Graveside services with military rites by the Galata American Legion took place at Valleyview Cemetery in Shelby. Rockman Funeral Chapel in Chester was in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence was born at Moscow, Idaho, on Sept. 9, 1919. He was the only son of Henry and Inez (Kinyon) Frederickson. He grew up on the family homestead northwest of Chester and received his formal education at a country school near the farm. In the years that followed, he worked for local farmers and ranchers.

Soon after the outbreak of World War II, Lawrence enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the Pacific Theater and his term of enlistment was from 1941 to 1945. While in the military, he met his wife, Betty J. McNichols, and they were married in Philadelphia, Penn., on Jan. 20, 1945. Several months later he was honorably discharged and he and his bride came to Montana where they began farming on the family homestead.

The couple lived and worked in the Chester community all of their married lives. After their two sons were grown, they moved to Chester. Lawrence farmed until his retirement in 1990, but stayed active in farming operations until this past spring. In May he suffered a hip fracture and entered the Liberty County Nursing Home for rehabilitation. Although his recovery from the fracture went well, he developed other health problems.

Lawrence was a long-time member of the Trinity Lutheran Church north of Lothair and had served on the church council. When the couple moved to Chester in 1979, they transferred their membership to Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Lawrence also served on the Eagle Creek School Board for many years.

Lawrence was a true patriot who was proud of his military service and an active member of the Galata American Legion and Chester VFW. He had many hobbies and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He also did some string art and stained glass work. He was an avid pro basketball fan and also enjoyed high school basketball and volleyball. He kept an immaculate yard and always presented a beautiful Christmas light display every year. In his quiet time at home he enjoyed reading and also liked jigsaw puzzles. His greatest love was farming and his family.

Survivors include his wife of over 55 years; two sons and their spouses: Chris and Carolyn of Tyler, Texas, and Dan and Lora of Chester; four grandchildren, Shawn, Cheri, Clint and Colt; one sister, Vieanna Osborne of Shelby and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by a granddaughter, Courtney.

Julia Catherine (Kasel) Larsen

Julia Catherine (Kasel) Larsen, 83, passed away at Marias Medical Center on Aug. 19. Funeral services were held Aug. 23 at the Galata Lutheran Church with Reverend Chuck Woodworth officiating.

A piano prelude was played by her granddaughter, Valerie Hegland. Organist was Laila Lindberg and vocalist/guitarist was Carole Hanson. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were all of Julia's grandchildren. Ushers were Luke and Erin Steinbacher. Burial was at the Galata Cemetery. Arrangements were by Rockman Funeral Chapel of Chester. Undesignated memorials will be given to a trust fund at Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp.

Julia was born at Barron County, Wis., on May 22, 1917. She was one of 10 children born to Mathias and Maria (Thurmes) Kasel. Julia was raised on the family farm in Wisconsin and received her formal education there.

She worked for a telephone company in St. Paul, Minn., for several years. In the late 1940s she came to Montana to work in the national park system. She worked one year at Yellowstone and the second year at a hotel in Glacier Park. While sightseeing in Glacier, she met a Galata area farmer, Quinten Larsen. He and Julia developed a special relationship from that first meeting and were married in Shelby on Sept. 28, 1950. For the past 49 years they lived, farmed and raised a family of six children at Galata.

The Larsen's were well known in the Hi-Line community between Shelby and Chester. They attended many weddings, funerals and other events. Although Julia's health had begun to fail in the past year, she still enjoyed getting out into the community. In fact, she and Quinten had enjoyed a dinner out the Friday evening before she passed away.

Julia was raised in a good Christian home and after her marriage she established her own Christian home in Galata. She was active in the Galata Lutheran Church and WELCA. She loved her life as a farm wife and homemaker. She was a good cook and will be remembered for her delicious scalloped potatoes and homemade lefse. In her quiet time she enjoyed embroidery, crocheting and word search games. She enjoyed playing canasta and Tri-ominoes with her family. As a hobby she collected spoons and made sequined calendars.

Julia was a loyal and considerate friend, always sending cards to people most dear to her. The past 15 years have been special because she loved to attend the many events of her grandchildren. She and Quinten were inseparable, except for those rare occasions when Quinten went on Scouting camp outs. The Larson's would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September.

In addition to her husband, Julia is survived by five daughters; Catherine Eklund of Shelby; Betty Dickison of Paris, Ill.; Rita Hegland (and husband, Doug) of Whitefish; Ann Vraa (and husband, Duane) of Shelby and Tammie Dibblee (and husband, Jeff) of Havre; one son, Joe Larsen (and wife, Barb) of Galata; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Gertrude Lesch, Josephine Samec and Tracy Kiemen, all of St. Paul, Minn., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her parents and six siblings preceded her in death.
