He was born in Tower City, N.D., on Sept. 24, 1915, to Simeon DeLange and Janjie “Jenny” Swart DeLange. The DeLange family tree has been traced back to 1770 to the Tonnis Kaspars DeLange family in Holland. His parents were both born in Holland and came to America when they were children. Harley DeLange lived the early years in North Dakota and South Dakota where all the family from Holland had immigrated. When he was about 10 years of age, his parents homesteaded at Saugus. Mr. DeLange’s brother, Clarence and their dad rode free from Tower City to Saugus in the caboose of the train. Two older brothers drove the 1924 Star touring car and the rest of the family across the old Yellowstone Trail to Terry. It took them five days to cross the trail. From Terry, Harley DeLange and two sisters took the train to Saugus. A family friend picked them up at the Saugus train station to take them to the homestead in a Model-T Coupe. They went by way of Sheep Mountain and down Custer Creek.
Mr, DeLange finished the eighth grade at Saugus. In 1934 the family moved to the Yellowstone Valley about five miles north and east of Miles City where he met his future wife, Helen Bard. They married in June of l936 and celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary June 23, 2009. Before his marriage he worked in the CCC Camp south of Ashland and worked for the Forest Service in the Beartooth Range Camp, and after his marriage he worked at Fort Peck.
Cooking was his duty at each place of employment. Later he became an apprentice in the ice cream and butter industry at the Custer County Creamery and spent part of World War II in Wolf Point where he worked at the Wolf Point Dairy.
In 1943 he moved his wife and family back to Miles City where he spent many years working for Henry Schulte at the Purity Dairies. This good experience led him to accept an offer from the Montana State Dairy Division to be one of the field men, traveling the Great Falls, Billings and Bozeman areas.
After taking some special correspondent courses he passed the State Sanitarian examinations and received his Registered Sanitarian Certificate. He worked for the state for several years. Before retiring to Terry, Mr. and Mrs. DeLange managed the 4D Egg Ranch in Hardin.
Mr. DeLange was full of laughter and fun. He fancied himself as a jack-of-all-trades and an inventor. He built two homes in Miles City for his family. He especially treasured the times he spent with his brothers and sisters at Fort Keogh. Old-time stories and politics were frequently the topic of discussion and debate.
Mr. DeLange loved fishing and outdoor wildlife and frequently took the family camping in the wilderness or at the cabin at Martinsdale. He was also a passionate rock hound and spend many hours digging through the sapphire mines north of Lewistown. He and his wife Helen were very proud of the sapphire finds that were faceted into gems or into rings for his wife, daughters and granddaughters.
In his retirement years Mr. DeLange took up oil painting and was very good at painting wildlife.
Mr. DeLange was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. The influences he had on his children and grandchildren are life enriching and eternal. He loved the Lord and for years served Him well at the First Baptist Church in Miles City. Grayson was born in Spearfish, South Dakota, on March 2, 1937. He moved to Miles City as a young boy. It was there that he discovered his talent for auto body repair while working for many years at Frank’s Body Shop.

Grayson ran a successful business there until his retirement in 1991. He was a hard worker, never settling for a job that was not done “just right.” He passed those values on to his children and employees over the years.
When Grayson was not working, he enjoyed hunting and pack trips in the mountains with friends. He always had something to take care of on the Brakke place including his horses, mules, sheep, goats and always a dog. Grayson enjoyed snowmobiling in Cooke City and in his later years made his annual pilgrimage to the Sturgis bike rally, bringing home t-shirts for his kids and grandkids.

Heidi Maria Stieg
I was born February 10, 1966 in Miles City to Owen and Darlene (Ferrel) Stieg. I was given the gifts of an older sister, Kim and then a younger brother, Josh, hence making me the quintessential middle child. I attended Ekalaka Grade School K-8 and was part of the first class to attend all four years at the brand new high school graduating in 1984 with a close group of 24 young people.
From there it was onto Montana State University in Bozeman acquiring a Bachelor of Science with an emphasis in Community Health in 1989. While there I worked part time for the Agricultural and Technology Education Department and joined Delta Gamma, a national Panhellenic Fraternity. In addition, some great memories from MSU times include almost always having a “good ol’ local guy” to dance with on a Saturday night. Often that was a breath snatching jitterbug or a leg-lifting polka with buddy and CCHS classmate Kent Williams, saving me from being a wallflower. After graduating from MSU it was quickly onto the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota to obtain my Professional Certification in Occupation Therapy, graduating in December of 1991.
Thomas Speelmon and I made a dash from Montana to the Deep South – Dothan, Alabama to begin our post-college careers. Luckily, Tom had sisters (from that large family) strategically placed across the country allowing a place to stay on our entire trip there. On May 7, 1992 Tom and I each got off work early to elope at the Coffee County Courthouse in Enterprise, Alabama, a few months later having our wedding blessed in small Catholic and Lutheran services with family in attendance.
In true Army fashion, it was soon a move in 1993 to Ft. Bliss, El Paso, Texas, with me and Army gear in tow. In 1995 I began work as a travelling occupational therapist due to Tom’s impending transfer overseas. After all, it was a choice between the jungle or Dillon, Montana (as it turned out, Tom spent a good deal of that time on a border peace-keeping mission and communication was notably limited anyway).
In January 1996 I accepted a permanent occupational therapy position in Cody, Wyoming with Tom and I purchasing our first home there. I left that position to undertake the initiation and development of a new therapy practice for a group of orthopedic surgeons in January of 1998. Our daughter, Adele (1998) and our son, Kon (2000) were both born there. Tom’s leaving the military in 1998 allowed us the opportunity for a stay-at-home parent while I continued to work. I have been the envy of many a female co-worker, having a spouse who can patch a pair of pants just as well as he can fix the toilet and overhaul the car.
In 2001 it was back to southeastern Montana so that Tom and I could trade off a little on the job titles, living first in Baker and then in Miles City where we flipped to and from Tom staying home to me.
On September 16, 2010 at the Holy Rosary Hospital under Hospice Care in Miles City at the age of 44, Heidi left us to continue on her journey. She is now free to be the angel she was always intended to be. Heidi was always more concerned with others then herself during her long illness. She frequently told her children, Adele and Kon, “There are a lot of people who are worse off then I am.”
Heidi is survived by her husband Tom and children Adele and Kon Speelmon of Miles City, her parents Owen and Darlene Stieg of Ekalaka, her sister Kim (Blake) Anderson of Billings and her brothers Mark (Franchesca) Stieg of Highland Place, CO. and Josh (Nikki) Stieg of Baker.
“Life is not about the destination, it’s about the journey”
Visitation will be held on Sunday with the family to receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 20, 2010 at 11:00 am at the First Lutheran Church in Miles City. Interment will follow at a later date in Ekalaka, MT.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, 512 Cale, Miles City, MT, or the Miles City Public Library, 1 South Tenth ST, Miles City, MT. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City has been entrusted with the arrangements.
