Kent H. Sandefer
Kent Harrison Sandefer, 58, of Tucson, Ariz., former Miles City resident, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, in Tucson.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Elliott Sandefer; his parents, Kenneth and Mary Sandefer; sister, Kathy Walker; and his sons, Robert Michael Sandefer and Steven James Sandefer.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Orin and Lenora Harrison and Wesley and Lula Sandefer.
Mr. Sandefer, born in Miles City on Nov. 2, 1952, was the sole son of Kenneth and Mary Sandefer. He attended Kircher Elementary School and Custer County District High School.
On Sept. 9, 1972, Cheryl Elliott and he married . From Montana State University-Bozeman he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, then a master’s degree in statistics.
At Miles Community College in Miles City; Mohave Community College in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; and then Tucson, Ariz., he shared his knowledge and passion for mathematics, computers and chemistry with hundreds of students. In between classes, he spent time with family, drove his motorcycle, and went hiking.
The memorial service, at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010.
Those desiring may make memorials to any charity of their choice.

John L. Mackenzie
John L. Mackenzie, 64, of Glasgow died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at the Billings Clinic in Billings.
Mr. Mackenzie was born in Miles City on Dec. 19, 1945, the son of Royal and Bernice Mackenzie. He was raised on a ranch outside of Miles City and at a young age, he joined the Navy where he was active for four years and in the reserve for two years.
He married Kathleen Lovatt in 1970. Mr. Mackenzie began working for the Milwaukee Railroad as a car man and brakeman conductor. When he left the Milwaukee Railroad he went to work for the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railroad and was an engineer when he retired in 1999 due to health issues.
Mr. Mackenzie was an avid reader, he loved spending time gardening and flying his model airplanes.
His survivors include his wife, Kathleen of 40 years; one son, Brett Mackenzie of Glasgow; one daughter, Shannon (Jeff) Bondy of Belgrade; sisters, Margaret (Don) Hafla of Cohagen, Sally (Larry) Phalen of Glendive and Mary Jean (Fred) Willard of Miles City; a brother, Lloyd (Sarah) Mackenzie of Billings; two grandchildren, Rhiannon Mackenzie and Payton Bondy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Pat Mackenzie.
A graveside service will be Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Riverview cemetery in Circle. Family and friends will meet at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Circle at 12:30 p.m. and proceed to the cemetery at 1 p.m.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Mike Root
Mike Root, 62, Fargo, passed away Dec. 10, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family and under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Mike Root was born on May 14, 1948 in Miles City, Montana. He attended school for the deaf and blind in Great Falls, MT and graduated from Great Falls High School.
After graduation he attended Eastern Montana College, now Montana State University, Billings. Mike lived in Great Falls and worked for US West Telephone Company. He then moved to Billings and continued working at US West where he met his wife, Donna. He played in bands as a guitarist, bass player and singer while traveling throughout the Midwest states to entertain.
Mike loved being with his grandchildren and also enjoyed amateur radio, all kinds of music, any kind of electronics, books and was willing to try anything at least once. He never let his blindness get in the way of doing anything, such as riding bike, driving and hunting. Mike loved learning and was able to audit classes at Concordia College under Professor Roy Hammerling where he could theorize with the students and in doing so made many friends.
Mike is survived by his wife, Donna; his children, Brandon, Bristol, CT, Kiersten (Bill) Bishop, Plainville, CT, Jill Jorgensen, Billings, Mt, Sean Root, Great Falls, MT; 7 grandchildren; sisters, Beverly (Jerry) Williams, Miles City, MT and Betty (Russ) Engesser, Billings, MT. He also leaves many nieces and nephews which he truly loved.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Onie Root and his brother, Art (Duke) Root.
The family wishes to thank the volunteers of Hospice of the Red River Valley and Essentia Health, Fargo.
The funeral was at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Fargo at 11:00 a.m. Monday. There was a Prayer service at the church at 7:00 p.m. Sunday. Visitation was at the church from 6:00 to 7:00 Sunday and one hour before the funeral on Monday.

John Barnard "Barney" Murnion
John Barnard “Barney” Murnion, 93, of Jordan died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at the Garfield County Nursing Home in Jordan.
Mr. Murnion was born on Oct. 8, 1917, the eldest son of seven children born to Alma (Howe) and John Joe Murnion. He was the first of a long line of Murnions born in the United States. He graduated from Garfield County High School at Jordan in 1935.
He worked with his father until he married Loriene Buffington on Oct. 6, 1943. For the first year of marriage their “home” was a sheep wagon. They then moved to Vail Creek where their six children were born. One daughter, Kay Rene (Jim) Whiteside; and five sons, John (Pat), Willie (Linda), Terry (Deanna), Pat (Cathy) and Rex (Lori).
Mr. Murnion enjoyed visiting and had a wonderful memory for historical facts and remembered the name of everyone he met. The door was always open and the coffee pot on. He was generous to anyone in need, be it his time, help or a piece of iron for repairs.
His survivors include his wife and children; 21 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one brother, Phillip (Cynthia) Murnion; one sister, Kathline (Tom) Fowler; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Clarke, James and Coleman; one sister: Mary Johnson; two grandsons: Luke Murnion and Kent Whiteside; and a great-grandson: Trent Schreiber.
A Vigil and Rosary will be held on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, at 7 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Jordan. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Jordan. Rite of Committal will be in the Pioneer cemetery at Jordan.
Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of the arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Garfield County Ambulance Service.

Mary Lois Johnson
Mary Lois Johnson, 91, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, at the Prairie Community Nursing Home in Terry.
She was born on Aug. 31, 1919, in Andes, the daughter of Ingvald and Anna Jensen Gabrielson. She was married on Aug. 28, 1940, to Harvey Johnson in Glasgow.
After marriage they moved to Sidney where they lived on a beet farm. In 1960 they moved to Terry and lived on an irrigated farm where they grew corn and beets until they moved into town in 1977.
In 1987, she and her special friend Jim Vaughn moved to New Plymouth, Idaho, where they lived for 20 years.
Mrs. Johnson enjoyed gardening. She could make flowers grow anywhere she wanted to. Gardening was her true passion. She was also a very skilled seamstress. Through the years she was a wonderful homemaker who could cook and bake.
Her survivors include Dick Johnson of White Hall; Mike (Judy) Johnson of Chinook; Peggy (Larry) Maier of Lewistown; Patty (Mark) Trask of Terry; and a special friend, Jim Vaughn of New Plymouth.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey; daughter-in-law, Sandy; grandson, Daniel; three brothers; and one sister.
A memorial service will be Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church in Terry. A luncheon will be held at the church immediately following the service.
Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home of Terry is in charge of the arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Prairie Community Hospital Guild.

Louie Senger
Louie Senger, age 97, of Miles City, passed away at the Billings Clinic in Billings, Mont. on Dec. 3, 2010.
Mr. Senger was born on Feb. 1, 1913 in Strasburg, N.D., the son of John and Veronica (Schnurr) Senger. He went to school in Strasburg. He worked in the CCC in 1933 at Rapid City and Bismarck, N.D.
He married Eleanor Gross in 1936 and to this union, two children were born, Joe and Rose. He later married Juanita Pearson in 1954 and to this union two children were born, Charles J. who disappeared at the age of 9 and Danny. Mr. Senger came to Miles City in 1942. He worked for the railroad and later worked for Doyls Plumbing and Heating before retiring.
Mr. Senger moved into the T.L.C. Nursing Home in 1998 where he remained until the time of his death.
His hobbies included fishing, coin collecting and bowling. He also loved his family very much.
Mr. Senger is survived by his child, Danny Senger of Miles City, and sister-in-law Mildred (Don) West of Jordan, Mont. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Veronica; a son, Joe Senger, and a daughter, Rose; three brothers: Joe, Mike and John; two sisters, Eva and Barbara; and three stepsisters, Rose, Otilla and Matilla.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 7 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 11 a.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Calvary cemetery.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Reece Lawrence Powell
In Honor and Memory of Reece Lawrence Powell; 1926 - 2010; 83 years.
Reece “Larry” Powell died on November 30, 2010, at the age of 83. A longtime resident of Miles City, he worked primarily for the City Park and Recreation Department. He spent the last few years of his life in the company of his childhood friend Jo Thompson, living in rural east central Idaho, just outside of Lenore.
Reece was born to Floyd Powell and Minnie Jasper Powell on December 30, 1926, at Warrensburg, Missouri. He served in the US Army, and subsequently with the Montana National Guard.
He married Marion “Murphy” Nelson in 1949. Murphy passed away in 1998. Three daughters - Syd Powell Nettik of Bozeman, Montana, Ramona Powell Dean, of Burnsville, Minnesota, and Cynthia Powell Zimbelman, of Bathgate, Scotland; and three grandchildren - Alyx and Matthew Nettik of Bozeman, and Owen Dean, US Air Force, survive Reece and Murphy.
In his prime, Reece enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, rock collecting, using his metal detector to find treasures, and square dancing with Murphy. He was a strong and active outdoorsman; a loyal friend - always willing to lend a hand.
A memorial service is planned for December 9, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel in Lewiston, Idaho.
A military graveside ceremony and interment at Lewis Clark Memorial Gardens in the veterans’ section will follow.

Donald O. "Don" Schott
Donald O. “Don” Schott, 88, of Miles City died on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010.
Mr. Schott was born on June 14, 1922, in Ferney, S.D., to Gertrude and George Schott. They moved to Terry when he was very young. He attended 12 years of school there and graduated from Terry High School in 1940.
During World War II, he was unable to serve in the armed forces due to a genetic heart defect, so he went to Seattle to work in a factory making items for the war effort.
Mr. Schott returned to Montana in 1950, to support his mother during his father’s final illness.
He and Ruth Trzcinski were married on July 26, 1952. Mr. Schott was a Blue Cross/Blue Shield representative and later worked for Deluxe Motors for more than 20 years. After a short retirement, he was elected to the office of Justice of the Peace for Custer County, serving four terms.
Mr. Schott was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, Yellowstone Lodge No. 26 and a 50+ year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Miles City.
In addition to his wife Ruth, he is survived by four children: Chuck (Tracy) of Billings, Lori Campbell of Dickinson, N.D., Don (Julie) of Colorado Springs, Colo., and David (Bonnie) of Redmond, Wash.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, George (Myrna) of Billings.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Beverly Callaghan, Dody Hauter and Wini Haug.
He will be remembered as a devoted husband and father.
Funeral services will be Monday, Dec. 6, 2010, at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church in Miles City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 1401 Main St., Miles City, MT. 59301 or to the Alzheimer’s Association of Montana, 3010 11th Ave. N., Billings MT 59101.
Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home of Miles City has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Roy Shannon
Roy Shannon, 78, of Volborg died at his home on Friday, Nov. 26, 2010.
Mr. Shannon was born at Eagle Butte, S.D., on March 10, 1932, to Alice and Beanie Shannon. His Grandma Shannon delivered him.
He grew up in Dupree, S.D., and went to school until he was a freshman in high school. He worked for Mr. Davis for awhile and then went to work for the Chicago Cattle Company. When they left the country, he worked for Voyle Samuelson in South Dakota and came to Montana with him. He worked for Lars Knudson for a short time and came back to work for Mr. Samuelson.
He enjoyed braiding and made clothes hangers, lead ropes, and halters. He was a loving brother and uncle and will be greatly missed.
His survivors include his sister, Virginia Samuelson; brother, Norman (Vonnie) Shannon of Terry; Robert (Kim) Shannon of Dupree, S.D.; and sister-in--law Betty Shannon of Sturgis, S.D.; and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Audrey and Stella; a brother, Phillip; and a niece, Sherry Gaskill.
Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at a later date.

Alex Magnuson Kosty
Alex Magnuson Kosty, 89, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at her home in Highgate Senior Living in Billings where she had resided for the past two years.
She was born on Nov. 18, 1921, in Marsh to Helen and Benjamin Schlenz. She graduated from Custer County High School in 1940.
On Nov. 28, 1940, she and Harold Magnuson were married in Miles City where they resided for all but three of their 50 years of married life. Mr. Magnuson was employed for two years in the shipyards at Lake Washington and then 15 months with the Navy during World War II. He died in 1991.
She was a member of the Town and Country Club, the Miles City Club, First Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and Circle. She competed in golf and bowling leagues and was always ready to play a game of cards with family and friends. She joined bridge, sewing club and ceramics. Recently, she began creating her own greeting cards.
In 1993, she married family friend Victor “Vic” Kosty. During their 11 years of marriage they enjoyed traveling and visiting their extended family. They spent summers in Miles City and winters in Sun City West. Mr. Kosty died in 2004.
Mrs. Kosty is survived by her daughters, Sharon (Orrin) Ferris of Billings and Linda (Vern) Erlenbusch of Miles City; step-sons, Kurt (Jill) Kosty, Doug (Cindy) Kosty and Clark (Mary) Kosty; step-daughter, Norma Jean (Bob) Brown; step-son--in-law, Chuck Rude; 16 grandchildren; 15 great--grandchildren; cousins; sisters and brothers-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Others who preceded Mrs. Kosty in death were her father, Benjamin; mother, Helen; step--father, Charles; and sister, Ruth.
A memorial service will be Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City.
