Aleta Husted
May 27, 1928 - Nov. 19, 2010
A long and far-reaching journey came to an end when Aleta Husted died on Nov. 19 at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Growing up in the small Eastern Montana town of Baker, Mont., Aleta graduated from the University of Montana Law School, practiced law for many years in Miles City, Mont. before changing course in mid-life after she married Paul Husted.
She and Paul started Blue Caboose Tours and Cruises, a group travel pioneer. Together they escorted groups all over the world, including one of the first to China after relations were normalized, as well as Africa, South America, Australia-New Zealand, Europe, the Caribbean, the South Pacific, India, Russia and on and on to nearly every corner of the globe.
She was a generous and kind-hearted mother to her son, Clayton Jones, and a proud and devoted grandmother to her grandson, Matt Jones, and moved to Lodi, CA, after retiring to be closer to them. As her health declined, her final year was spent at the Wagner Heights Residential Home in Stockton, CA.
Very much a Renaissance woman, Aleta not only had a clear head for business and the law, but a passion for politics, the arts, good food and drink, and everything going on in the world around her.
In the end, after her health declined, she spent most of her time watching TV in bed, cursing the evils of George W. Bush and the Fox TV Network and cheering Obama on to victory.
In her vision of heaven, she still had a remote control with the idea that she could watch the lives of her family and friends as they played out after she was gone.
She was a talented painter whose style evolved over the course of her life. She did realistic painting as a young art student at St. Olaf College, but her work became more abstract and fantastical after she retired. She left behind enough paintings to fill a mansion.
She believed the existence of dogs was compelling evidence that God exists. She never met a martini or a piece of pumpkin pie she didn’t like. She hated exercise.
She was really shrewd. She will be missed by the many friends she made along the way: as a young girl in Baker; a young lawyer in Washington D.C.; a lawyer, businesswoman and mother in Miles City; a college student and later a retiree in Missoula; and finally in Stockton, CA, and Lodi, CA, where she made her last stand.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Clayton Jones, and her second husband, Paul.
She is survived and will be missed by Clayton, Matt and her daughter-in-law, Kari Jones. A special thanks to Vera Thompson, who was her caretaker for many years.
A Memorial Service will be held in Miles City, where her ashes will be scattered, in the spring.
Frisbie-Warren & Carroll Mortuary entrusted with the arrangements.
