Betty Nan Howe Richard
Betty Nan Howe Richard, 92, died at the Mountainview Medical Center in White Sulphur Springs on Monday, March 21, 2011.
She was born March 12, 1919, to Earl and Harrie Logan Howe in Miles City.
Mrs. Richard’s uncle, Dick Logan, was the builder and founder of Billings International Airport in Montana, now called Logan International. As a small child in the 1920s, she helped her mother and Mr. Logan’s wife make sack lunches for passengers arriving on airplanes from Great Falls and other cities. Mr. Logan used horses to pull the planes from the runway to the hangar, and in winter the passengers waded through deep snow to get to the modest terminal building. Winter flying in those days could be a rapid but difficult means for travel, in unheated planes, bundled in boots, heavy robes and blankets.
In 1940, she married Maury Richard. They raised registered Herefords for 30 years on a ranch south of Miles City.
Mrs. Richard worked for a number of years at the radio station KATL in Miles City and volunteered at the local blood bank.
In 1975, Mr. and Mrs. Richard sold their ranch and moved to Sequim, Wash., where she was active in bridge clubs and community volunteer organizations.
The Richards had two children, Jim, who now lives in White Sulphur Springs with his wife, Barbara; and daughter, Barbara Ann (Richard) Kosty, who died of cancer in Bellevue, Wash., in 1988.
Mrs. Richard’s son Jim and his wife moved to Sequim in 2004 to be near his mother, and the three traveled extensively. Mrs. Richard’s favorite trip was to Branson, Mo. In 2009, they moved back to Montana. Following a stroke, Mrs. Richard spent her remaining months at the Mountainview Medical Center in White Sulphur Springs.
Mrs. Richard also is survived by two granddaughters, Angie Kelly of Portland, Ore., and Molly Kosty of San Francisco, Calif.; two great-grandchildren; a brother, John Howe, who lives in Miles City with his wife, Vi; a nephew, Earl Howe; and nieces, Rhonda Hunt and Jane Jennings.
She was preceded in death by her husband Maury, who died in Sequim in 1999; and a sister, Pat.

Mr. and Mrs. Jones lived in the Alzada area, then moved to Naturita, Colo., where he worked in construction.
In 1960 they moved back to Belle Creek to take over the family ranch. Mr. Jones also trained hounds for hunting. He raised his family on the ranch and continued to live there until a stroke eventually landed him in the Powder River Manor.
Mr. Jones loved running the ranch, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends. He entertained many hunters who became like family and returned every season to hunt on his ranch as well as to enjoy his company.
Mr. Jones’ family was very important to him, especially his grandchildren, who he spoiled like crazy. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t let them get away with, including painting his toenails bright pink. He loved teaching them to ride horses and 4-wheelers and taking them to feed cows.
