Debra Lee Christiansen
Debra Lee Christiansen died at a hospice center in Great Falls on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, 2011. She was the daughter of Gale and Frances Christiansen and was born on Feb. 29, 1960. She was proud to be born during a leap year.
She worked at some jobs in Miles City and did babysitting for different families. She really had a way with children.
For some time she lived at Kinsey until she moved to Great Falls to be closer to her family.
In Great Falls, she went to work for National Electronics Warranty Company until the time came when she was ill and had to quit. She raised one son on her own, Darien Lee, and she was so proud of his school accomplishments.
Her survivors include her mother, Frances; her son, Darien; two brothers, Glenn and Calvin, his wife Dena and their daughters, Melissa and Andrea; an adopted sister, Catina Mendyk, and her family; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, Gale; paternal grandparents, Joe and Sylvia Christiansen; and maternal grandparents, Fred and Bessie Campbell.
A memorial date will be set up later in the summer.

Jane Neumann
Jane Neumann, 77, of Circle, formerly of Miles City and a life-long resident of eastern Montana, died Friday, May 27, 2011, at the McCone County Health Center in Circle.
She was the daughter of Ivan and Lucille Milne Allread. She was a sister, mother, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, aunt and a friend to most everyone she met. Her sons: Hal and his wife Susan Edwards of King Salmon, AK, and Wade Neumann of Circle, were with her as she died. She met her end with the same courage and fortitude that she displayed throughout her life.
From her childhood in Alzada, Birney, and Rosebud, to her years in Miles City raising her family, to her many years in Circle, Mrs. Neumann loved the country and people of eastern Montana.
Mrs. Neumann is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law; sisters-in-law, Ella Gran of Des Moines, Wash., Edna Mendenhall and Marjorie Pontius, both of Miles City; brother-in-law, Hugh Neumann of Miles City; nephews, Glenn Mendenhall of Circle and Jack Allread of Albuquerque, N.M.; and numerous nieces and nephews across Montana and the West.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her husband, Herb Neumann; her brothers, Charles and Jack Allread; and many family members.
At Mrs. Neumann’s request, no services are planned. Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel of Circle is in charge of the arrangements.
Given her love of books, a donation to the local library is something she would appreciate.

Douglas E. Smith
Douglas E. Smith, lifetime resident of Miles City, died Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at the Community Health Center (VA).
Mr. Smith was born on Oct. 23, 1944, to Donald and Donna Smith and joined two brothers, Matt and Wayne. He completed school and college at Miles Community College.
Most of his early working years were for Milwaukee Railroad as a carman and as an engineer, which was interrupted by a stint with the Army. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant in the Army, serving during Vietnam.
After doing some roofing, driving wells and being a guard in Colstrip he worked 14 years at Montana Correctional Facility. In 1980, he married Bonnie Peters (Babcock) and shared the lives of her four children. In 1998, he became disabled and was home for five years then spent seven and on-half years in EMVH in Glendive. He moved to the VA in Miles City where he was in Hospice for the last six weeks.
Mr. Smith could fix anything you handed him and with either left or right hand. He loved to fish for trout, especially near Harlowton and many other places (any nice stream!) Several years he traveled to the mountains for elk hunting and did lots of deer and antelope hunting. The cold weather didn’t bother him while trapping.
Some of his favorite things to do were listening to music and enjoying dancing. He really favored small children, usually giving them a quarter or sometimes a dollar. He was especially proud of his vehicles, namely his red and white jeep and his red 1972 Plymouth.
Mr. Smith was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign War and was a longtime member of the Eagles Lodge. He attended Sunday school and Bible camps with First Baptist Church.
His survivors include his wife of 31 years, Bonnie; brothers, Wayne (Kathy) and Matt (Linda); two step-children, Michelle Jones of Miles City and Scott Babcock of California; step-grandchildren, Ethan and Chalice Jones, Savannah Babcock and Sam Larson. He is also survived by his nieces, Kim (Jerry and Kayla Barnaby), Kristine (Darwin and Brandon Thrams) and a nephew, Scott (Lori and Amanda Smith); and numerous cousins, aunts, uncles and many special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Donna; and two step-children, Brent and Todd Babcock.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery with full military honors provided by VFW Post 1579.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Karla Rae Murphy
Karla Rae Murphy, 48, of Miles City passed away May 21, 2001 in the Holy Rosary Hospital.
She was born Dec. 19, 1962 in Miles City, a daughter of Delbert and Betty Spracklin Cole. She grew up and received her education in Miles City.
Karla married Ronald Murphy and the couple made their home in Miles City. She loved to play and was an avid fisherman.
Her father and her husband preceded Karla in death.
Survivors include her mother Betty Cole and her son Francis Murphy.
Cremation has taken place in the Bullis-Graves Eastern Montana Crematory. Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Bullis-Graves Memorial Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Stella Taylor
Stella Taylor, 86, died Saturday, May 21, 2011, at Valley Eldercare in Grand Forks, N.D., where she had been visiting when she fell and broke her hip.
Mrs. Taylor was born Nov. 18, 1924, the eldest daughter of George and Florence Elizabeth Burroughs Clark, in Opheim. She grew up and attended schools in the Opheim, Glasgow and Ft. Peck areas.
She married Robert Taylor of Glasgow on July 19, 1942, in Culbertson. They lived in Glasgow, then in Dayton, Ohio, where their first daughter, Peggy, was born. They lived briefly in Williston, N.D., before moving back to Glasgow and then Ft. Peck when children, Dick, Ron, Jerry and Jeani, were born.
The family moved to Riverdale, N.D., in 1954. The Riverdale hospital was closed down by then so children were born at the hospital in Garrison, N.D., both Pat in 1955, who died the same year, and Laurie in 1959.
They moved to Pierre in 1972. Mrs. Taylor was a member of the First Baptist Church. She worked briefly at J C Penney and as a lunchroom aid at Jefferson School. She had a Wednesday night sewing club where she loved doing embroidery with her friends.
Mrs. Taylor had a stroke and moved to Miles City in 2008 where she lived with her daughter, Jeani. They spent the last winter in Phoenix, Ariz., and she loved it there.
Her survivors include three sons, Dick Taylor of Grand Forks, Ron Taylor and his wife, Heather, of Parksville, B.C., and Jerry Taylor and his wife, Becky, of Denver, Colo.; two daughters, Jeani Pierson and her husband Ron of Miles City, and Laurie Taylor of Pierre; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and 17 step-great-grandchildren.
Survivors also include four brothers, Bill Clark of Spokane, Wash., Dale Clark and his wife Sue of Tuscan, Ariz., Duane Clark and his wife Bernie of Weatherford, Texas, and Gene Clark and his wife Pat of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one sister, Barb Hagadorn and her husband Arland of Klammath Falls, Ore.; and her close friends Don and Linda Zeller of Pierre, their three daughters and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, one daughter and two brothers.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre. Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 26, 2011, at First Baptist Church in Pierre with interment following at Riverside cemetery.

Dr. John Taylor
Dr. John Taylor died Friday, May 20, 2011, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Miles City after a brief battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).
He was born in Hibbing, Minn., to Roy and Carol Taylor on July 22, 1941. He attended grade school in Hibbing and then attended the University of Minnesota’s school of dentistry. He graduated from there in 1965 at the age of 23 years with a degree in D.D.S.
After graduation he completed a year of general medical internship at Ft. Snelling in Minneapolis. Following his year of internship, Dr. Taylor was drafted into the United States Army, serving four years until being honorably discharged in 1970.
After serving his country, Dr. Taylor began his career with the VA system as a dentist. He and his family moved to Miles City in November of 1973 where he continued practicing dentistry for the VA until his retirement.
Dr. Taylor and wife, Kathy, were married on Aug. 22, 1964. To this marriage came Corey of Gillette Wyo., Alissa of Spokane Wash., Shane (Tana) of Anaconda, Brandon (Erin) of Medford Wis., and Ryan (Amanda) of Billings. Dr. Taylor had five beautiful grandchildren, Aaron, Peyton, Dillon, Addison and Jillian, along with two more expected this summer.
Dr. Taylor also is survived by his brother, Peter (Paula) of Big Fork, Minn.; and mother-in-law, Julia Lind.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Carol Taylor; and father-in-law, Robert Lind.
Dr. Taylor enjoyed numerous outdoor activities with his family and friends. He greatly enjoyed visits with friends and family during his brief battle, the importance of which cannot be overstated.
The family requests should a memorial donation be desired, that it be made to the Denton Field Restoration Fund. Dr. Taylor very much enjoyed watching the Custer County District High School football teams over the years.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 26, 2011, at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home, with a reception to follow right after the service. Please dress casually as Dr. Taylor was not a big fan of formal wear.
Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of the arrangements.

Virgil "Mike" Lestar
Virgil “Mike” Lestar, age 76, of Wibaux, formerly of Baker, died Thursday, May 5, 2011, at St. Vincent’s Healthcare in Billings following a long illness.
Graveside services will be Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at 11 a.m. in the Custer County cemetery in Miles City with the Rev. Warren Maxted officiating.
A luncheon will follow in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall at 119 N. Sixth St. in Miles City.
Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Wibaux is entrusted with arrangements.

Esther Mae Ketcham
Esther Mae Ketcham passed away in Crescent City, CA on May 12, 2011. She was 95. Esther had been a resident of Ocean Park for the last three years.
Esther was born September 11, 1915 in Emerson, North Dakota to James and Florence (Hutchinson) Durfee.
She married Willis Ketcham in Miles City, Montana on April 15, 1933. They made their home in Miles City where Esther worked as a cook for the Ten Spot Café and the Miles City Club. Willis preceded her in death in 1962.
Esther moved to Brookings. Ore., in 1963 where she worked as a cook for School District 17C for eleven years. She was the first cook at the Chetco Senior Center when they began the fundraising for the new building. Esther was a member of the Ladies Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary since 1942. She also was a longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Brookings Emblem Club #265 for 30 years and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Cape Sebastian Chapter.
Esther enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, garage saleing and playing Bingo. She also liked cooking and baking. Esther took a lot of pride in teaching her grandchildren how to cook as well.
Survivors include her son, Kenneth Ketcham of Brookings, his children, Karla, Kim, Kerry and Tim; daughter, Cleo Curtiss of Brookings, her children, Bruce and Karen; daughter, Wally Burnett and her husband, Tex, and her son, David; son, Stan Ketcham of Miles City, his daughter, Tonya; daughter, Polly Blank, her husband, Michael of Pensacola, FL and their children, Joe and Kevin; and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Esther was also a special mom to Gerald Boss and Ron Gable and Carl Brum.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, George, Claude, Wayne and Wallace Durfee; and a sister, Elsie Ogletree.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, c/o Wally Burnett, P.O. Box 173, Brookings, OR 97415.
Esther will be laid to rest beside her husband in the Custer County cemetery in Miles City. No ceremony will be held.
Willis and Esther will be commemorated as pioneers in the Range Riders Museum in Miles City.

George Lewis
Word has been received of the death of George Lewis.
Mr. Lewis died Thursday, May 19, 2011.

Robert "Bob" Stabler
Robert “Bob” Stabler, 82, of Miles City, died peacefully in his home on Wednesday, May 18, 2011, with his family by his side, after a brief bout with cancer.
Mr. Stabler was born Nov. 8, 1928, in Eureka, S.D., to Jacob and Rose Stock Stabler. He attended a country school at Eureka through the fourth grade when the family moved to Plevna. He received the rest of his schooling at Plevna Grade and High School. He worked on farms around Plevna and was a telephone switchboard operator for a time.
After his mother died, the family moved to Miles City in 1944. One of his first jobs in Miles City was working for Sanitary Dairy washing out cream cans. He worked for various trucking and construction companies, including Hauck Transport and Lou Richardson Construction, until 1959 when he and his brother, Melvin, bought the Range Riders Cab Company. They also bought out the other two cab companies, Yellow Cab and Miles City Cab.
In 1975 he went into the trucking business and later added a Pilot Car service, which he operated until January 2011. He tried retiring several times, but couldn’t quite give up doing what he loved to do (driving) until his health gave out.
He and Hazel Clauson were married on Sept. 15, 1957, at the First Baptist Church in Miles City. He later became a member of Grace Bible Church, serving for a number of years, along with his wife, preparing the bread and juice for communion services. He also drove bus for the 3 in 1 children’s ministry at church as well as the bus for the Mavericks baseball team for a period of time.
Mr. Stabler loved to visit with the “old-timers” and reminisce about old times. Going to the 600 Cafe at 5 a.m. to drink coffee and work the crossword puzzle with his buddies was a daily occurrence whenever possible, along with the 4 p.m. guys at 4-Bs. He loved to tease and his grandchildren said “Grandpa laughs at everything.”
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Hazel; and two children, Ken (Alane) Stabler and Marcy Parks; six grandchildren, Rodney (Ashley) and Danny Parks, Kary and Nikki Parks, Alissa and Rachel Stabler. He was very proud of his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Richard, Herman and Melvin.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 20, 2011, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Saturday, May 21, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Grace Bible Church. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Grace Bible Church, Holy Rosary Hospice or the charity of one’s choice.
