Elsie Gilland Fox
Elsie Gilland Fox passed away November 3, 2011 at Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City. She was born December 4th, 1907 in a cabin on the Powder River in southeast Montana.
After graduating from high school in 1924 in Miles City, Fox moved to Seattle where she was employed by the Tom Jones Parry Advertising Agency.
The economic collapse of the Great Depression triggered her activism. She circulated petitions advocating for pensions for the elderly and workers, food for the hungry, and women’s rights. She demonstrated against evictions after homeowners missed their mortgage payments and fought against discrimination against blacks and immigrants.
Elsie married Ernest Fox, a CIO organizer, in 1936. During WWII, Elsie moved to San Francisco where she worked for the ILWU (Int. Longshoremen and Warehouse Union). A woman in a man’s world, she was a highly respected office manager of Local 6 for 26 years.
As a result of her progressive affiliations Fox racked up a sizeable FBI file. When Fox was 99 years old she obtained her file and was delighted to discover that famed FBI Director J.Edgar Hoover noted in 1972 that she was “a dangerous woman”.
Upon her retirement in 1972 Fox went on a Marco Polo Bus Tour originating in Nepal where she traveled through India, over the Khyber Pass into Afghanistan, and on through Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Greece and culminating in London.
In her senior years, as long as she could pick up a phone or carry a petition, Elsie was an activist. In Miles City she and Sister Ruth - one a radical, the other a local saint - circulated a petition objecting to the high cost of prescription drugs for the elderly.
When Fox moved to Miles City in 1973 she enrolled in drivers training with high school students and obtained her driver’s license at 66 years of age. Many local citizens remember Elsie zipping around town in her bright yellow Gremlin and wherever she went she was always dressed in style. She continued to travel (and shop!) world-wide with the Blue Caboose Travel Agency.
Fox was named the 1985 Senior Citizen of the Year. In 2007, the American Civil Liberties Union gave her the Jeanette Rankin Civil Liberties award.
Her life was the subject of a book by Karen Stevenson, “Elsie Fox: Portrait of an Activist”. Fox hoped that through her life story, others would be inspired to act. “The only safeguard people have is democracy, and we must exercise that democracy, dear!” Her greatest hope was that her life story would inspire people to wake up and become involved in their community, country, and world. “One person can make a difference!”
And Elsie Fox did.
Fox is survived by her loving niece, Alene Hoye, many cousins, and special friends, Terry and Deborah Hanson, Patrick and Janet Kelly of Miles City, Thora Hansen and Betty Emilsson of Denver, Patty Lyndon of NYC, and many friends, young and old.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Bullis-Graves Memorial Chapel ahs been entrusted with the arrangements.
