Dorothy Grenfell
1918-2006

Dorothy Rose Grenfell, of Stevensville, went to meet the Lord Friday, June 16, 2006 at the age of 88 at Hunter's Glen in Missoula with her family close by her side.

She was born in Absarokee, Montana on April 10, 1918 to Arthur and Rose (Mason) Donaldson.

Dorothy moved to Missoula with her parents and brother where she attended grade school.

She finished her high school education in Stevensville where she met Frank Grenfell.

The couple was married on May 8, 1935 and moved to the Stevensville Three Mile area.

They had six children: Rose, Sylvia, Jim, Gwen, Roger and Ross.

Dorothy raised her children and supported and assisted Frank in numerous projects on their farm until 1994.

Dorothy belonged to the Three Mile Garden Club and to the local craft club.

She enjoyed taking apart small appliances, repairing and restoring them back to their original state.

She was a diligent seamstress, an avid canner, and baker.

She knitted and crocheted gifts for all her 20 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren (with one on the way).

Dorothy will dearly miss her beloved companion, Mitzi, her Pekinese.

Dorothy was very charitable with her time when it came to her family.

She nurtured and loved them dearly until the day she died.

Frank, her husband of 63 years, preceded her in death, also her brother Walter, older sister Pearl and son-in-law Jack McNett.

Survivors include her six children: Rose McNett, Federal Way, WA; Sylvia (Delos) Dickerson, Stevensville; Jim (Joy) Grenfell, Edgewood, WA; Gwen Grenfell, Missoula; F. Roger Grenfell, Missoula and Ross (Paula) Grenfell, Missoula.

Also surviving are her 20 grandchildren: John McNett, Colleen Hildebrandt, Kent McNett, Kurt McNett, Kevin Dickerson, Karri Lawson, Karla Rocheleau, Doug Grenfell, Rhoda Story, Dal Stevens, Valerie Stevens, Kim Stevens, Brenda McCullar, Vicki Schmid, Dana Jenkins, Chris Grenfell, Stacy Barry, Jennifer Lippy, Angela Grenfell and Jeremy Grenfell.

Her great grandchildren are: Monique, Mark, Chase, Marlayna Hildebrandt, Vivien and Ben McNett; Joshua and Codey Lawson, Kelsey, Kendall, and Kailan Rocheleau, Jimmy and Sara Story, Jessica Gader, Jeremy Brown, Kristopher Thayer, Adam Crittenden, Miranda, Malia and Anitra Schmid, Bridger and Hunter Ament, Denver Jenkins, Logan Grenfell, Andrew and Alivia Barry and Gabriel Lippy.

Dorothy's legacy is her family and her faith.

The light of the Lord is now with her.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 21 at the Whitesitt Funeral Home with Pastor Tom King officiating.

Burial followed at the Florence-Carlton cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice, American Heart Association, Dementia or Diabetes Association.

Alexander Nash
1918-2006

Alexander Nash, 87, formerly of NYC, passed away in Florence among family on June 24, 2006.

Al has been residing at Kathy's Place in Florence for the last three and a half years where he had been struggling with Alzheimer's disease.

Over the past week the disease had taken its toll, and he quickly and peacefully passed away.

Al was born on June 27, 1918 and saw many changes throughout his life.

He served in the Army during the Second World War, joined the New York City Police Department eventually becoming a detective, and then running Globe Security after he retired from NYPD.

He was preceded in death by his brother George, his sister Elizabeth, and his loving wife Florence who he has missed dearly.

He has twin daughters, Patricia and Florence, two grandchildren, Gregory and Cheryl, and one great grandson, Ryan.

Grandpa Nash played a prominent role in the lives and hearts of his grandchildren, helping to raise them in the early years, and then providing ongoing adventures and wonderful memories during school holidays and summer vacations.

He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge, the Police Square Club, the AARP and his church, and traveled worldwide with friends and neighbors.

Above all, he continually helped everyone that he was acquainted with.

He was never too busy to give a ride, help someone fix something, grow beautiful plants for the church or give support wherever he could.

While many of his peers and family members have passed on, the memory of Alexander Nash will live on in everyone's hearts.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, June 30 at 3 p.m. at the Whitesitt Funeral Chapel in Stevensville.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 11 a.m. until service time.

Al will be laid to rest next to his wife at the Mt. Olivet cemetery in Maspeth, N.Y. following services at the Fredericks Funeral home in Flushing, N.Y.

Arlene Lindquist Hopkins
1931-2006

Arlene Lindquist Hopkins, 74, of Missoula, passed away on Thursday, July 6, at St. Patrick Hospital of natural causes.

She was born December 5, 1931, in White River, South Dakota to Clarence and Elizabeth Lindquist. The family moved to the Bitterroot Valley where she attended Darby Public Schools. She eventually went to work for Safeway in Hamilton, where she met her future husband, Jim Hopkins.

On May 7, 1952, Arlene and Jim were married at St. Francis Church in Hamilton. The couple moved to Butte in 1953, returning to their true home in the Bitterroot in 1981. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and sister and her grandchildren were her pride and joy. Two of her greatest pleasures were her gardening and her love of pets. She is survived by her beloved cat, Ernie.

Arlene worked at the McDonalds in Missoula for ten years and enjoyed all of her customers and friends through those years.

Arlene was preceded in death by her husband Jim, her parents Clarence and Elizabeth, sister Carol Sawyer and brothers-in-law Stan Sawyer and John Foley.

Survivors include her son Steve, of Missoula; two daughters, Kathy Cassidy (Roger), Stevensville, and Teri Lundberg (Mike) of Canyon Creek, Montana; grandsons Patrick and Connor Cassidy, Stevensville; and granddaughters Emma and Krista Lundberg of Canyon Creek; brothers Leonard (Jennie), Bud (Lillian), and Jim (Marci), all of Hamilton, and Ed (Shirley) of Duluth, MN; and sisters Betty Else (Jerry) of Ontario, OR, Myrna Lindquist of Hamilton, and Vivian Foley of Corvallis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held Monday, July 10, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Stevensville, with Father Mike Smith officiating. Burial was at Riverview cemetery in Hamilton.

Myrtle Johnson
1930-2006

Myrtle Wilkins Johnson, 76 of Stevensville passed away at her home on Wednesday, July 5, 2006.

She was born on June 25, 1930 in Wasta, South Dakota. She married Walter E. Johnson, Sr. on April 10, 1948 in Rapid City, SD where they resided until moving to Missoula in 1963 and then to Stevensville in 1973.

Myrtle's greatest enjoyment in her life was caring for and loving her family. She enjoyed reading, embroidery, gardening, crossword puzzles and watching her "soaps."

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda, her mother Mamie Wilkins, daughter-in-law Gail and grandsons, Shain and Tracy.

She is survived by her husband, Walter; her children Claus (Lois) Gilbert, AZ, Walter, Jr., Stevensville, Charles, Lolo, Wayne (Gwen), El Paso, TX, Mark (Fran), Helena, Brian (Lee), Lolo, and Janice, Stevensville; brothers Orvill (Della) Noldner, Walla Walla, WA, Larry (Dani) Noldner, Cheyenne, WY; sisters Carrie Morris (Stony Geist) Cheyenne, WY, Punky (Jack) Demsey, and Louise (Loren) Roberts, all of New Castle, WY.

Seventeen grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, four nephews and nine nieces also survive.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 10 at the Whitesitt Funeral Home with Pastor Jon Meeks II officiating.

Interment followed at Riverside cemetery in Stevensville.

Should friends desire, memorials are asked to the Clark Fork City Church, City Foods, 2811 Latimer, Missoula MT 59801.

Casey Monroe Hunter
1982-2006

Casey Monroe Hunter, age 23, was born in Helena, Montana on October 9, 1982.

He was taken from us early in the morning on July 7, 2006, the result of a boating mishap on Flathead Lake.

Casey was a loyal friend to many, often putting his concern for others before his own.

The Hunter family lived in Helena, Hamilton, and Missoula as Casey was growing up.

He attended school in Missoula at Lewis & Clark Elementary, Washington Middle School and Sentinel High School.

From a young age, Casey displayed a love of plants and animals, and kept many exotic pets including an iguana, other lizards, spiders, scorpions, and a ferret.

He loved the outdoors, hunting, camping and fishing.

He became an accomplished skier, on ski trips at the family condo in Park City, Utah and while training and competing in freestyle events with the Missoula Ski Education Foundation at Missoula's Snowbowl.

He loved to go target shooting with friends in the hills surrounding Missoula.

He also loved to ride his dirt bike.

His primary occupation was auto body repair work.

He loved to tinker with things, to figure out how they work.

He was so quick witted, people loved being around him.

He was the only child of Tim and Shelley Hunter who now reside in Stevensville.

He is also survived by his grandparents, Jim and Pat Hunter of Irvine, California and Bill and Barbara Bisom of Helena, Montana; his aunts and uncles: Chris and Carol Hunter and their children Kyle and McKenzie; Cathy Bisom and her children Cory and Heidi; Mark Bisom; Jeff and Jody Brandt and their children Chris, Amanda and Dillon and his son Austin; Dan Bisom and his children Tom and Mike; Paul and Betty Bisom and their children Shayla, James, Alyssa, Greg and Stephen Daem; Jim and Amy Wolfe and their children Ashley and Madison; all residing in Helena, Montana.

A memorial service will be held at the Missoula Christian Church located at 1900 W. Broadway (behind Bloom's Furniture) in Missoula, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2006.

Eulogies will be presented by his closest companions, Dillon Bisom, his cousin, and Seth Thorning, his dear friend.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Missoula Christian Church, c/o Colleen Caprara, 8121 Springtime Road, Missoula MT 59803.

Ralph Gerald 'Jerry' Altig
1937-2006

Ralph Gerald "Jerry" Altig, 69 of Stevensville, died at Community Medical Center in Missoula on September 29, 2006.

He was born on July 11, 1937 in Ada County, Idaho to Ralph Earl and Dorothy Marie (Sutton) Altig.

Jerry enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1960-1962.

He attended the Multnomah School of the Bible in Portland and has devoted his entire life to the Lord.

His life consisted of Bible study and he wrote several articles and a thesis on the Bible.

He was a gifted Bible teacher.

He loved story telling and made up stories and songs for children.

Jerry was also an accomplished artist and musician, playing the accordion, guitar, coronet, and organ.

Jerry painted houses for a living and lived in Western Montana, Missoula, the Flathead and the Bitterroot for 35 years.

Survivors include a sister Anne Frieboes in Poulsbo, WA; uncles, Caleb Altig of Polson and Kenneth (Shirley) Altig of Meridian, ID; an aunt Myrtle Burton of Newberg, OR; several cousins, nieces and nephews. Jerry also had countless friends throughout Western Montana.

Memorial services will be conducted at the Stevensville Bible Church on Buck St. in Stevensville on Saturday, October 7, at 10 a.m.

The Whitesitt Funeral Home in Stevensville is in charge of cremation arrangements.
